I can't even tell the difference between an AR-15 and M-16 by looking at them. I know what an AK-47 looks like because it has a curved clip and usually some kind of wooden casing on certain areas. AR-15's and M-16s (later more the M4 to a degree) are basicaly the same gun but different models like a car but with different packages. The Ar-15 is the civilian version and can legaly only have semi automatic mode of fire on them. The M-16 is the military version and can have the 3 shot burst or fully auto matic version. The M4 is a more modern gun but basicaly as I understand the same as an M-16.
The curved clip on an AK-47 or a "banana clip" is a magazine that can work on an m-16 or ar-15 but is traditionally not due to the Us military more preference on marksmanship over inaccurate fire that an ak is. Its just a regular magazine but somehow due to its design is less likely to jam due to mud sand and dirt somehow.
The AK-47 is basically a soviet upgrade on the German mp 44 from WW2. Its licensed to be produced all around the world and is liked beacuse its cheap, almost never jams and is really easy to fire from the hip.
Due to some cosmic happenstance or the Lizards that control the world they ironically use the same ammunition and can often be loaded from the same magazines.

Short answer is yes and no. Long answer is that the AR-15 is but a designation for a model of gun and can be sold in varying calibers to fire different sized bullets. But one of those commonly sold can use the same ammunition that an Ak-47 is commonly chambered to fire.

You can rebarrel AR-15's to shoot almost anything it doesnt take too long, i wouldnt think converting it to shoot 7.62x39 would be that difficult

You're right, there are no Lizard people in control of key global institutions.

If you're looking for more of an enthusiast type of weapon, you can go with something like a Sig. If you want something that's more functional and butt simple to work with (ie easy to break down, clean, and maintain), I'd always go with a Glock. Next, you need to pick your preferred size. There's nothing wrong with keeping a full size handgun around. However, full size handguns have limitations when it comes to carrying them -- particularly if you want them in a pants/waist holster. I have a full size Glock 22 (.40 caliber S&W), and carrying it is like carrying a brick. If you want to carry a lot, you're probably going to want a compact or even sub-compact handgun. Lastly, you need to pick your ammunition. For all practical purposes, there's really two choices here: 9 mm or .40 caliber S&W. I prefer .40 caliber S&W because it has the stopping power of a .45. If I have to shoot someone, I want that person to go down when I hit them. The drawback is that the .40 caliber S&W is a bit harder to manage and control than the 9 mm. This isn't an issue with the full size handguns, but it is more noticeable when you move down to a subcompact model. The other thing is that 9 mm ammo is a bit cheaper. I'm mostly going to be using it for protection and practice. I haven't shot anything since I got out of the military, so I want to have my own and keep the muscle memory. I live in Missouri now. If you've been in the Politics thread (I know you Daunt), you know what kind of place it is. So I want it for peace of mind. I have large hands, so I don't know if a subcompact would fit well with me. A full size would probably be better.
Ammo would probably be the .40 S&W. I pick up quick on accuracy when it comes to shooting, so I think I can get control of that. I might have to get two just for the reasons you brought up, but I definitely need to do more research and go try some out. My sister's boyfriend is a huge gun enthusiast, so I might ask him for some pointers.

I was just going off of what Daunt gave me. Like I said, more research and actual using of these are needed before I can truly make an informed decision.

A cheaper offbrand 1911 might be your kind of style too(.45 acp)

The reason why AK magazines have fewer feed issues is the same reason why the gun itself rarely jams: Dem bigass tolerances. Tolerances are fairly small, but rather clearances are not so much (to be technical). Certain variations based on the AK model have gotten rid of the clearance problems. Even if there's a bit of give and take it doesn't actually make the rifle inaccurate. You'll still have fairly tight groups actually it's still acceptable.
Now the caliber matters of course, depends on intended usage and all that...

I still haven't gotten around to getting out and talking to people, or even seeing what they go for here in Missouri. We have lax carry laws from the research I can tell. And being a Veteran is a plus. Largest negative is being black in Missouri. Doesn't bode well. :/
As soon as I decide on something, I'll post pictures of the 2-3 I've narrowed it down to. Thanks everyone for the input.

As far as i know 007 used the Walther PPK in Dr No specifically, newer models in other movies i think, as well if i recall its the same gun Hitler commited suicide with.
The Walther pk380 is what i was thinking of, they go for around 400~ or so here(North Carolina) not so sure on Missouri though.
