So, there I am, playin' games as usual. When the game ends and there's some down time. So i'm in Garena, chatting on clan chat when all of a sudden my start bar disappears. I immediately say, 'whattttt and reboot'. *Which may have been a bad idea...* anyway
So windows takes a little longer to start up... And when I get in, there is this window popped up: - no start bar - no icons on desktop - (background still though!) Fux yeah silver lining?! And it reads as follows: *To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Windows Explorer Publisher: Microsoft Corporation -------- close message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats. "What should I do?"
this is all the information I have and I don't have long before a blue screen hits me to dump physical memory or whatever.
Anyway, halp?! I'll check this thread again when I can if anyones had this happen or knows what it is / how to fix. *I dunno how I can fix it without mah trusty start bar & precious icons*

SERVES YOU RIGHT FOR PLAYING DOTA!
Actually I don't know why. I am a computer noobie =D

Google.com downloaded Spybot s & d Scan, fix selected.
Advanced options : startup programs (remove ALL OF THEM) ...... and another option for current programs in memory (REMOVE ALL O THEM)
Virus scan after
Download Avast,Onfire, mccafe or norton, whatever you prefere, update, scan.
Have windows CD handy. Information is easy to save. Sometimes your operating system is not.
Also have you trick ctrl-alt-delt -> run Explorer.exe to see if that helps?
If spybot says "I need to restart to fix selected errors, you 100% have a virus. Restart.
|
|
When I go to any page that seems to be able to help it gives me: Unable to connect Oddly enough, I can go to TL/Youtube/google/etc... But anything I google I can't get to. ;o Ugh, I can't D/L spybot S&D because I can't connect to any pages that I don't frequently visit.
(I'm usin' da firefox) And yeah, I can't run explorer.exe ;p
|
Some time ago I had virus with made my start bar randomly dissapear also, later on I couldn't enter control panel and other things... ended up scanning comp with all possible online scanners, asking for help on computer forums (they are often able to help, remove this crap from your computer). But after all I decided to just reinstall windows. Its the last thing you probably gonna do, but it will help for sure^^ And btw don't use IE, if you do

PRELIMINARY EXCUSE TO NOT PLAY IN SHOWMATCH?

Mahnini, don't troll. --; Zerg, when I click the link it closes firefox. And when I re-open it via the support screen it has a tab of Windows XP home page when I restore the pages I was using last. I dunno why that is as I don't frequent Win XP page. zzzz I don't think I have a good anti-virus installed on this comp, and I can't seem to download any as I can't get to the pages... fux fux fux Fux.
|
Sounds like core system files where modified... like your explorer.exe restore point(Safe mode mash f5 f7 during start up till you get the option to start up in safe mode) would be best shot also easiest way to get everything back till then. You could also do the troubleshooting if possible
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318027
Can you connect to any of the File transfer sites if so just get someone to upload spybot snd among other things like windows defender, ad-aware, and try to get Microsoft updates. Get TL to host it if you ask nice admin with those rights..
Also at itachii lol don't use ie, ie vs ff in terms of security is pretty null argument main diff is how they handle things. FF is nearly purely reactive in its security patching when major holes are discovered. IE is nearly purely proactive where Microsoft higher teams to search left and right for exploits to close and on occasion miss things that will need to be updated but usually takes awhile because they want to include anything else they found at that time in the patch.
Also did you do anything that boot up like open any emails visit some questionable sites click on a garena ad by accident. + Show Spoiler +almost thought what mahnini posted
Also I've never had virus problems in all my years of computing and i don't use anything but a router firewall. Makes me wonder what you people do to get viruses.

Is formatting an option? It will save you tons of time if you don't have any important documents on your pc.
|
start->run->msconfig->startup
shutdown everything / reboot
or you can try safemode just spam f8 while it boots not too much though or else your keyboard might flip out and not work
|

OH MAHNINI TRYING TO BE NICE NOW. NOT WORKING, I SEE THROUGH YOUR LIES.
|
K, thanks Zerg. I can save the file but how will I open it with no icons or windows explorer ? Oh wait, it should be there in safe mode if it finishes d/ling right?
|
is awesome32244 Posts
Yes, but if you have too many icons on desktop it may go off screen on safe mode because safe mode turns resolution down.
|
Wouldn't booting up in safe mode and using a restore point be a good option?

not sure if it will let you manually start explorer, but you can start explorer.exe by hitting ctrl alt delete and then going to start process

Really just reinstall windows rewrite over the current one but you will have to rename windows system folder to something else and it will boot from that system files
then what you do is get a backup device and backup all your important data then reformat your drive and install a clean copy of windows.
Helps speed things up if you have multiple HDD cuz then you could just move your files to that drive and reformat your system drive your other hdd shouldn't be touched unless you have something made not to be annoying but to be malicious. can't say how many times a process like that been speed up for me because i have 4 HDD (not very green of me but 1 performance drive with 3 storage give me a whole lotta of working room)
|
Yeah I have like... 5000 icons. It'll definitely be off screen. And Pete, I can't run it. The data execution prevention message comes up again when I try.

Once your system has been really compromised there is no good way around formatting/reinstalling. Even if you seem to have fixed the issue w/o reinstall the risk will still be great in the long run.

It's ok in safe mode go to c://documents and settings/username/Desktop and search for the download file there (if you saved it to the desktop).

I had that exact problem, found no other way to fix it than to empty my harddrive and start all over.
|
TOASTY: this is no virus this is BSOD (blue screen of death), got same exactly same problem once and was my pagefile here is what you gota do http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic51365.html
edit just do this if problem continues check the rest of page:
Check that your pagefile is ok. Do the following.
Right click my computer, select properties, then the advanced tab.
Under performance, click settings. Click on the advanced tab and then on the change button.
Click on the custom size button and click in the initial size box, make the size of the page file 0. Click in the maximum size box, make the size of the page file 0.
Click set.
Now reboot your machine. After your system has restarted, run a defrag.
Once the defrag has finished, go back to the pagefile settings above and click on the change button. For the initial and maximum pagefile size make it 1.5 times the ammount of ram you have. I.E if you have 512mb of ram set the page file to 768mb.
Click on the set button again and reboot your system. You now have a brand new page file.
|
Ok: Here's what happened so far. Went to safemode, found Spybot, installed spybot (after disconnecting the internet options) wasn't able to load spybot. Afterwards I rebooted - safe mode - tried that again. Failed. So I rebooted and tried to load it from the last settings windows worked (something I tried like 5 times before) and it miraculously worked. after about like 30+ reboots tonight... or more.. (frustration) All my icons are back... the start-up thing is back... there's a couple new messages at start-up... and I can't run spybot search and destroy still despite everything seeming normal now.... But I get this eerie feeling that this isn't the last of it. Atleast now I can read up on it and thanks for all the help. Now let's make sure we know what's wrong. I'm going to try Malongo's route right now. I dunno why it'd work now but there's some msg's at start-up that have me scared, I shoulda kept them up there so I could write what they were (i'm afraid to reboot again.. obvious reasons). ;p
|
zzz after setting the page initials etc to 0... i'm pretty scared to restart... =p How do I run a defrag?
|
questions: did you install something other than spybot sd? win version? what does exactly your msg on startup say? did you made somethig unusual, like installing or plugging a hardware of anykind (joystick, usb etc)?
|
right click on your hard drive -> propiedades->tools-> defragmentation
|
On December 05 2008 19:16 malongo wrote: questions: did you install something other than spybot sd? N win version? Win XP what does exactly your msg on startup say? The old one said what was in the OP. Now that it worked I don't know what it said because I closed it rather than leaving it up to write here (it was in the way and I couldn't move it) did you made somethig unusual, like installing or plugging a hardware of anykind (joystick, usb etc)? no, the only unusual thing I did recently was download a torrent for an anime (toradora) from animetake.com or something
|
kkk rebooting *crosses fingers*
|
then im pretty sure this is no virus, worst case scenario its your ram or procesor dying. But dont worry after that new pagefile and a defrag everything should go smoothly.
|
Some info that might help you avoid such things in the future:
1. Keep your system on one drive and DO NOT store any valuable data there or install stuff that will be pain to lose (firefox, media players etc. are fine). 2. Turn off system restore completely (you would be surprised how many viruses/malware cease to work if you turn it off). 3. If you have 4(xp) or 8(vista) GB RAM - do not use pagefile, will speed things up incredibly. 4. Avoid keeping large number of icons on your desktop (10-15 tops). 5. If you followed the above advice and happen to have the same problem again, just format your sysdrive/reinstall windows. Takes about 30-45 minutes time (depending on system specs) and everything is ok again.
|
hmmm disk defragmenter could not start

[didn't read all thread.. srry if repost] Do you have access to the web? If so, try this to scan your PC: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ free only scan (work great).
Also, stop anything that you don't know for sure you need in Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Startup tab
Take a look of the services that are running on your PC in Start -> Run -> services.msc Look at every single services that are installed and look at the description of each one. If it sound weird, disable it. (Even if it's not Started)

Did you update/download codecs in order to watch that anime you downloaded? If yes, that's propably where you get your trojan.
A friend of mine had the same problem (redirected URLs). It was called Zlob.dnschanger.
I booted in safe mode and tried to clean the registry of everything "zlob" and the fake DCHP-entries in order to being able to do an online scan. But in the end it boiled down to a reinstall.
Good luck...

I don't get why no-one on this site uses anti virus software, I use AVG and scan the computer daily, along with weekly scans of adaware and running zone alarm firewall 24/7.
I never get viruses, but it's better to be safe than sorry
|
If you have don't get anything go to Start --> Run --> "explorer.exe"
Once you get your desktop back up you can rush Spybot, Adaware, and if those don't get it AVG or Avast can do a thorough, and lengthy, job.
|
Format computer and make sure to partition your hdd next time! I always keep atleast two partitions with windows files on C:/ and everything else on D:/. Makes life alot easier when you get a virus
|
Sounds exactly like a virus I had. The virus is very very smart. It blocks only the most popular anti-virus websites and programs. It also blocks links from a google search, so I found myself using the 'cached' button to find help.
I used this program, but I can't remember if I used this link or not (might be blocked for you), but the program was not blocked by the virus. http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button
Run the program and get rid of anything it finds. Afterwards, you should be able to run the anti-virus programs, so now run HiJackThis and run a test. Unless you know what you're doing, you should post the list here or feel free to PM me and I'll point out which to delete.

this has happened to me before.
im 100% its spyware/virus.
testie u need to download HijackThis ------>HJT
run it, copy the log. DO NOT do anything as of yet because u can seriously delete some important shit with this program.
then go to www.bleepingcomputer.com
join the forums, navigate to a section that says either "malware" or "hijackthis logs"
post your log along with an explanation of whats going on and an expert will guide you step by step on how to go about removing the threat for good. trust me, these ppl are gods when it comes to this.
edit: their response time is less than 12 hours usually, so its worth it.

just backup your shit on a disk and format takes about 1 hour max, this will make your pc clean, fast, gosu, everything again. Even if you are able fix all this crap it will still be messed up with bullshit.
|
Somebody might have already mentioned this but if you haven't already, turn off DEP, I assume your using windows vista.
Open a command prompt as an administrator and type: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
I've found that DEP does more harm to you than good in protection. It doesn't actually protect you from anything it only shuts things down after they've become infected, and more times than not it shuts things down that you don't want shut down. Many coders are exploiting DEP and writing scripts that use it to shut everything down on your system sounds like you got hit with something nasty. After saving everything I'd definitely just reinstall windows.
|
Install your operation system again...

just do it and get it over with... your system is gonna be clean again without further problems (until this happens again :p)

I don't know if you moved an avi file to your desktop recently. However, some avi files for whatever reason windows explorer thinks are viruses or something and it keeps giving those data execution messages. O.o i see a lot of ppl saying "virus" makes start bar disappear start bar disappears when explorer.exe closes, so it might be just a regular windows crash windows sux, btw most commonly, to fix it u need to restart, safemode, or ctrl+shift+esc and run explorer.exe again other than that, yeah, u prolly got pwnd by virus

oh, oops didnt read the posts uh.... anyways.... firefox is kewl? antivirus suggestion: panda antivirus (used by some corporations and such) erm, i didnt read all of these posts, but i promote firefox firefox's addons are awesome (if u know which ones to download) some addons are unreliable, as they might lower its security when u install them, but there are addons that actually improve it (like adblock, talkback, etc) i dont really have a malware blocker, but i never find any when i scan, so.....

I had the same thing, if you can get Avast antivirus somehow do it and schedule a boot time scan, it will get rid of anything and manually ask you to delete it.

It's entirely possible that Testie didn't do anything shady.
E.g. in the past, there have been times where malicious ads were being shown on many legitimate websites. They weren't noticed by the ad company because the ads were designed to behave as normal ads if the visitor's IP address belonged to the company.
IIRC even wordpress.com was affected by something like this, and it hosts many legitimate websites.

No, reformat takes forever. Its not simple, its a bitch. Even if you back up all your files you still have to reinstall (and uninstall, if its a store bought PC) all the bullshit. It takes hours. Then you have to update everything. Then you have to organize everything. Then you have to change all the windows settings and properties/appearance and shit back how you like it.

May be a pain in the ass for a power user but not for someone that doesn't even know what format is mostly cuz they could care less about set up and more about how it runs.
Reformatting on my comp even with fast hdd and multiple storage usually takes me 3 4 hours to get it back to where i would like it from start to finish. But on the bright side my comp is usually cleaner getting rid of software that i no longer use keeping reg clean etc also i get to speak to some great people in India to active my cd key...

My start bar just disappeared again. I rebooted and it's fine but mehhhh shit's still lurkin' on my comp. Lame.

Have you tried what I suggested earlier?
|
+ Show Spoiler [Izzy rant] +Cuz internet security is bull shit. I mean even the ceo of Trend Micro said just buying antivirus is pointless. Has to be a full security package from firewall to sweeper etc. Also ionno why people say norton is shit it's number 1 in terms of total security for their security suites it just lacks the power of kaspersky sweeper that checks for things that might be viruses but norton does better is getting already known viruses etc legacy ones. Also norton is more noob friendly. I would use kaspersky personally thou if i ever would use something like that. Also usually once you feel the effects of a virus it's usually already too late some shit just doesn't want to go. It's what DOS command line power is for just rip that shit right out of the computer.

You just got hijacked try different browers. Try IE in safe mode Use your alt ctrl delete New task run "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff or iexplore -extoff both do the same thing

internet doesn't work in safe mode oo
|
|
it should, you can run safe mode with networking, its how i got rid of my virus, if that doesnt work then you gotta reinstall windows.

k well after this malwarebytes scan is complete again i'll see. Right now anything I type is highlighted by a little yellowish box. How very annoying. >=[
|
You have an Explorer extension / virus that is causing explorer to crash. The DEP message means Explorer or some addon to explorer crashed. If you don't have any viruses (malwarebytes should confirm that), use AutoRuns to remove any unneeded IE / Explorer addons, also try http://r-1.ch/ShellExtensionManagerXP.zip to remove even more unneeded junk.
|
Anybody who puts a virus on another persons computer deserves a punch in the dick. Srsly.
btw barring any increased imba shit in the virus, I should be able to play just fine. I logged on BW and tested to see if it still works. It does. ;p

Even if you have no clue what your doing you can't fuck up. Its just spamming next next next yes yes yes yes and done.
mobo drivers... mine has to restart like 5 times when i install it starcraft broodwar mouse drivers microphone drivers printer drivers graphics card drivers antivirus bittorrent firefox firefox addons other games (if you have steam... oh fuck) chaoslauncher iccup launcher iccup maps hamachi music player gom daum winrar

Testie, looks like you got a pretty new age high tech virus. It won't let you run a lot of programs. My advice is to go onto the HJT forums and ask around about current programs designed for your specific virus. Might be a lot of work to clean it out, and/or just reuqire a reformat

It closes my browser when I go anywhere near that forum. ;p Evil little thing.

reinstalling is a bigger pain than removing a virus. Stop exaggerating.

They can't see the people they are owning, thus they have no emotional attachment.
We should find whoever wrote this and complety rape his computer(s), then find out where he lives and hack him into little pieces.
Actually don't kill his computer, that's just cruel; I don't wanna imagine what will happen to the poor kid, especially one who is so attached to his computer.

ooopppsss...
Sorry testie about the PM.. I though you still had the problem..
|
System Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings make sure data execution prevention is only on for essential programs.
Windows might be hurting you.
Also, you can run MSCONFIG (start->run "msconfig") and go to the startup tab and disable all startup programs and that may help.
|
I had this problem before... couple weeks ago... what I did was:
0) Unplug the infected computer from the internet. Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
1) On another computer (not infected, of course): -download latest version of Hijackthis! -download latest version of Spybot -download latest version of Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware -download latest version of SDFix
2) Rename all the above files to something else that you can recognize but the virus won't. - ie. Hijackthat!, Spybit, Malwherebites, SDFax
3) Copy them onto USB or burn it onto a CD or whatever. DON'T send it via network. (don't see why not, but this was recommended to me)
4) Install them on the infected machine. Make sure SDFix is installed onto your root drive (C: or w/e) for easier access.
5) Rename all the installed programs executable files so that the virus won't recognize them.
6) Run SDFix first. It will take a while to scan through your entire computer, back up vitals, and tell you to restart. After restarting, it'd probably do it again (run secondary scans/fixes) and will need you to restart again, if not, then your problem isn't as bad.
7) Run the rest of the programs above. Hijackthis!, Malwarebyte's, Spybot. ** Make sure you look up what each registry is online before you delete them!! Also feel free to run the TrendMicro housecall site. You will be able to visit it now.
8) Restart again for good measure. (Optional)
9) Congrats, your machine is safe until the next major infection!!
=======
Note: SDFix won't delete your important stuff. For me, it just moved a couple folders around and I had to find them and put them back. (They move to your SDFix folder; quarantine)
edit: Note2: Symptoms: - Cannot use anti-virus or anti-malware programs - Whenever you search for something on a popular search engine (ie, google, yahoo, etc.) it'll forward you to some random website - You cannot use Trend Micro's Housecall (<-- obvious that something isn't right) - If you have a personal firewall installed, it will alert you of "Port Scan" attacks. IMPORTANT: These are attempted transfers of any recorded passwords/information. (or so I've been told) But if you have a firewall and your firewall alerts you, then you're probably okay. If not, panic.
I hope this helps! Good luck!

edit: CRAP, wrong topic !!
sorry for bumping

Thanks a lot for the help guys, i'm going to bed now but i'll try more of this (especially Not_computer's detailed guide tomorrow) This'll be so cool if it works and I don't have to reformat. =) THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a lot of mouse problems leadingup to it actually. I thought I wasn't going to be able to play lol. Wasn't sure if virus started owning my hardware or what but it didn't fix on reboots, and then I finally tried switching ports and it worked.

so in the end, u DID get a virus......
and it sounds pretty advanced too.... like preventing u from accessing sites, deleting files, etc im for formatting, but i guess you could try not_computer's guide before formatting...
imo it sounds like it already infected core files of windows, and i personally think that it is probable that when u scan your pc, those core files will show up as infected.... meaning that if u delete/quarantine them, windows is screwed anyways xP
anyways, good luck, hope im wrong

take a magnet and put it near ur computer and yell at it to work or u'll kill it w/ the magnet...
also reboot in safemode and try running explorer by hitting ctrl+alt+del and then clicking new task and typing it in there
if afterward the start bar disappear again then u might have to do a full disc wipe (aka format)

If you did download an avi file, you can just delete it and everything will be fine.
This only happens in Vista when your AVI codecs arent 100% vista compatiable (because they were made for XP). Easy solution to this is just google "vista codecs" But this isnt his problem anyway. He is using XP

Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok so I am still virus'd right now Not_Computer, however I am able to run SDFix / Spybot S&D / Malwarebytes. SDFix caught something the other 2 didn't. Spybot caught something Malware didn't. And Malware caught something they didn't etc...
I didn't follow your steps exactly because zzzz I don't know how. I just went to safemode: ran SDFix, it rebooted 2-3 times. Caught a trojan. Then I ran Spybot/Malwarebytes/(can'tgethijackthis). I didn't rename them either because it doesn't shut them down. (When I first had it, it would shut them down immediately until I renamed malwarebytes).
However I cannot get Hijack this yet can anyone provide a direct download to it? It closes the web browser before I can download it. I was able to get spybot from somebody posting a direct link to it earlier.
(I cannot go to the TrendMicro / Housecall stuff yet as it still closes the browser). ;p

|
|
Lame, it closes the DL link. T_T
|
|
|
So, reinstalling is a PITA but honestly I'd recommend it at this point. You can never be sure a trojan is really gone. The symptoms might be, but trojans generally try not to have obvious symptoms. It could still be there. It's like Chicken Pox, which can hide out in your body for decades and reemerging as Shingles. At least you can reset your operating system and start fresh.
Just MHO, but I wouldn't trust a computer that had been owned if the OS hadn't since been reinstalled.

always happy to help. don't you have to reformat though to install windows? Lol i always thought you had to

sorry to bump this again, but i just wanna give you a congrats on it finally working
sorry my guide didn't help... i was soooo sure it'd solve your problem but I guess virus makers have gone another step ahead since my own incidence. >_<
Racenilatr: reinstalling windows does wonders! you still get to keep all your stuff but it'll completely wipe and renew everything else in the roots. the first time i ever got a virus i re-installed windows... in fact, i haven't reformatted this desktop for over 5 years now (eee... it's gonna die soon >_>)
happy ending!!~

good job testie congratulations for cleaning the mess, sorry not to be of much help.
|
Ouch, that virus just sounds insane from your description of it. I've only reinstalled Windows on my machine once, because I had accidentally messed with something in regedit.
By the way, this reminds me of when I installed a Sony Vegas plugin (.exe) which, unfortunately, contained a virus. I installed it too quickly and didn't even think about scanning it. It created a fake "c:\program files\services.exe" which was trying to access the internet to do something bad to my poor little computer.
The funny part was, Windows Firewall was blocking all of its attempts to access the internet. I saw the fake "services.exe" in the Task Manager, but I couldn't stop it because it was "in use." So i just used FileAssassin to actually delete it.
I didn't consult with a single antivirus site or run the 4 virus scanners I had on the computer. That virus = fail.

In the future you should post on a Malware Removal forum, malware wont be removed by any scanner programs listed here(with the exception of MBAM in some cases)
