Introduction:PhotoSwap is the brain-child of forum member and photographer PH (with support from myself in making the OP/running the challenges.) The basic idea is to inspire and motivate the photographers of Teamliquid.net. Experience, equipment and style are of no consequence. Everyone from casual photographers to those who are into studying subjects such as strobist technique can join in. The more, the merrier. To keep things organized PH and myself have devised a system focusing upon bi-weekly challenges and the idea of a lottery to determine which forum member chooses the topic these challenges with be based around. 1) Keep it civil ~ Constructive criticism is welcomed, but please try to give either technical advice (camera settings/post-production editing using photoshop etc.) or reasons for your thoughts upon each photo. Trolls and flamers will be reported to the moderating staff. Comments by those not taking part in the challenges are welcomed, but we ask you to refrain from posting one-liners to keep the topic relatively spam free. 2) Keep active ~ In order to increase feed back and make sure this project stay active we ask those who submit photos to do the following: - Submit one photo (limited to one per person.) for each challenge posted if possible. Please PM all submissions to NeverGG with the title: 'PhotoSwap Submission: Summer ((or whatever the current topic title is.))' - Comment on the two photos submitted prior to your own. (If you are the first to submit please comment on both photos submitted after yours.) - Submit topics for the bi-weekly lottery via PM to NeverGG (no comments please only PMs because it's easier to keep track of.) Please title PMs: 'Topic Idea.' Topics can range from the following: - An image (drawn, photographed, digital or any other image-based media type.) - A single word or sentence. - A piece of music or sound effect. - A film clip. 3) When addressing feed back or other ideas to specific forum members please use the following style: Example: @PH: I love the use of lighting, but have you considered...... @NeverGG: Stop photographing bowl cuts! Notes:~ Photo submission deadlines will be posted beneath the 'Topic' banner along with the week's current topic and a list of former topics. Topics will be determined by NeverGG picking them out of a hat/handbag. Topics will be decided a week before the current topic ends to give people time to find inspiration and locations/objects etc. ~ All photos will be archived by NeverGG and posted under spoilers in the 'Archive' section. Here you can find all the current and former topics for these challenges. 8th August ~ 22nd August: Summer (submitted by PH.)
Submit your ideas for the next topic by: 15th August. Here is a list of the archived topics and all the photos submitted thus far to PhotoSwap. Topic One: Summer (August 8th~22nd 2009.)Contributing members:NeverGG PH ZoW v1rtu0so Julmust Boundz(DarKo) HeyitsClay Rayzorblade MuShu ~ Coming Soon ~ Conclusion:Thank you to everyone who chooses to join in with these challenges. Our goal is to promote creativity and inspire the photographers or aspiring photographers on TL.net to produce more work in the future and find the same enjoyment through photography that PH and myself do. All photos submitted remain the sole property of those who created them. We take no credit for their work. If you wish to use photographers submissions to make graphics etc then please contact them personally.

I really hope this gets rolling and makes me get up and actually go shooting.
Sign up, everyone! (:

If we dont know anything about photography can we still submit photos? It would make me use my camera more often. My only concern is its just a basic digital camera so the pictures wouldnt be as good as a professional camera, and I cant give good advice on lighting and all that stuff as in the example.
The first topic is summer - so we can take a picture of anything that we think would be classified under that one word in some way?

Absolutely - anyone can submit photos regardless of experience, what type of camera they're using etc. Advice can be as simple as 'Why don't you change the angle up a bit.' or 'I'd like to see more photos from you using people/wide angles etc.' Don't worry at all about your level of experience
Yes, that's the idea - anything that evokes the feeling of 'Summer' to you is perfectly fine. I'm adding my submission now, but we want variety and a big range of different interpretations for each topic because it's so much more fun that way.
|
Yes you absolutely can, and we encourage you. The point of this is not only to get inactive enthusiasts like me some motivation to get active again (and give active enthusiasts something more and fun to do), but it's also to get people with interest in photography the kick they need to really get into it.
non-"pro" cameras (and I use that term stupidly) aren't required to take good or even great photos, so feel free to use whatever you have on hand. It's being able to use whatever equipment you have to their fullest potential that matters. That means knowing its limits and your own capabilities. So basically, just do your best!
And as for the topic, yes, anything that you can spin off of the word "summer" fits. It can be anything from a conceptual connection to something it connotes.

3 submissions so far - come on guys. This won't work if no one even comments -_-;
|
So do we post the pic here and PM it so that people can comment it on this thread? Like, if we PM the pics, how are we supposed to comment them? Sorry, I'm kind of confused, although this sounds like it could be fun since I always take pics with my camera phone.
edit - aw crap, i just thought of a good idea, but i already picked most of the peaches off the tree :^(

No - it's outlined in the rules section; You PM me the photo based upon the bi-weekly topic (under the topic banner.) and at the end of the photo submissions date I will post all of them in this op so you can receive feed back and we can all see the images.
|
This is perfect, I'm no photographer but I was out taking pics of some of my mates playing football(soccer) yesterday and got some pics with a real summer feeling to them. I'll post them once I get home from work.
|
Remember, like the OP says, PM them to NeverGG.
She will post them all in the OP so they can be seen all at once. From there, you pick the two preceding you and you MUST give feedback/critique them. (:
|
I would appreciate if someone made a "sig" for me or something, PM me anyone if interested, please someone really good would be appreciated.

how bout modelling in pictures? can you help in how to pose in pictures? i happen to love posing in pictures but sometimes i run of ideas and sometimes i dont know what to do
EDIT: do you shop photos too?
|
EDIT: do you shop photos too? Finializing and editing photos in photoshop is almost a must in the digi-photo industry that is today. I would say OFC.

Idea for event: Fears.
The goal here is to capture a fear you have on a picture. Example: Fear of heights, darkness, claustrophobia etc.
It could basically be anything that you find scary. The picture itself doesnt have to be scary to others, instead it could look really interesting and beatuiful.

Bi-weekly is every two weeks, right?
cause semi-weekly is every half-week

Bi-weekly is twice a week. Fortnightly would probably be once every two weeks.

We're doing it every 2 weeks, but I'm calling it bi-weekly because it sounds cuter than fortnightly. (Plus we're lazy.) I'll answer all the other questions tomorrow. (I guess in a sense it is kind of bi-weekly since we have challenge submissions in week 2, but whatever. Go english fail!)

Biweekly actually means every two weeks.
|
Biweekly, anually etc can actually mean either twice a week/year or every 2 weeks/year, since "bi" is just a combining form of both two and twice. It's an ambiguous term that shouldn't really be used even though semi-anually always means twice a year, bi-anually doesn't always mean once every two years

Oh sweet - I was right. I thought so, but I can't contradict Boss Pachi.

This sounds like a great idea. Question: should we submit any description regarding our photo? Like our own comments, worries, questions, or explanations?

I can't see why a brief description of the photo would harm. I think it's good because if the photo looks nothing like the current event, the description could help with the process of 1+1=2.

With the one photo per person limit, I'm going to need to think about this for a bit. I'm excited though!

I used to be hugely into photography but I haven't really done any for a few years now. This and my new digital animation unit this semester just might get me back into it!

NeverGG, maybe make a list of members in OP now? It seems like this is kinda starting to roll along now, lol.

When I was trying to learn, the best thing way to learn for me was to look at fashion magazines and study other photographers. Just keep an eye out for the technical details: the way they fill the space/compositional balance, the lighting styles (for what you want to go for), and obviously, the way they angle/position the body and the different parts of it (also depends on the feel you're going for). That helped a lot.
And as for photoshop, every photographer, digital or not, post-processes their photos. With film, the post-work gets done in a darkroom. With digital, it gets done in a program like photoshop. How much people do in photoshop depends on their preferences, objectives and whatnot.

1. Yes - I'll add the list later on today Thanks to everyone who has submitted and commented so far.
2. I need to learn this myself - I think it might be really useful to have a gallery of 'poses' aka. photos we've seen that have different and inspiring poses used. I'll work on this over the weekend.
3. Yes, I shop all my work. Some photos require less photoshopping (I use PS7.) and others require way more. I'm hoping to cut down on this processing time once I have my new set up. We can definitely offer hints and tips for this - although I am not the most experienced at using these programs.
4. I love that suggestion - please PM it to me as per the rules.
5. Yes, that's an excellent idea. I will add it to the OP rules and feel free to do so. We can include the descriptions as a note beneath each submission when they're posted in the OP.

This is a really awesome idea! I've always wanted to get a bit more into photography and this is really good motivation for myself and others.
Too bad it's winter here at the moment D; It'll be hard to get a shot that represents Summer. I'm looking forward to seeing some entries :D

Thanks - well it doesn't have to be Summer in terms of weather. Possibly you could do something that evokes a feeling of 'wanting it to be Summer again.' Or put a Summery item (like a beach ball or something equally as symbolic of Summer.) in a Wintery context - I'd love to see that type of contradiction in a photo.

come an man, you're from australia. what you consider "winter" we consider warm summer up here in europe

I'm amped for this. Lets go challenges.

Just got back from a beautiful weekend in San Diego and I think I have a few photos that would be great for this week's topic. I love the idea as well! Will PM you soon NeverGG!

Bi-weekly is twice a week. Fortnightly would probably be once every two weeks. Biweekly actually means every two weeks. It can mean both.

To give some credit to nevergg here, some patience is required, she has been extremely busy, and she hasn't yet pulled a semi old guy on you guys.
That being said, I'm going to participate in the next round(?) assuming I know how the format works.

Sorry guys - I literally *just* started a new semester at work and aside from all the books being different (which means studying outside of work.) I've also been asked to do fomos stuff. I will *try* to have this done within the next two days - but obviously my two jobs have to come first.
