While in the grocery store today I once again witnessed the common sight of empty shelves where potato chips were supposed to be at. Well, except the salt and vinegar flavours chips that were relatively untouched, silently lying and waiting for their supporters to come by.
Anyways, I have eaten salt and vinegar chips before. In my personal opinion, they taste horrible due to the combination of sourness and saltiness, despite my love for typical sour food. However they are still being produced so I figured that there are people that like it. So out of my curiosity, what do you think of salt and vinegar potato chips?
Poll: Do you like Salt 'n Vinegar potato chips? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): I don't eat junk food
EDIT: I read through all of the replies so far and some of them are just absolutely hilarious (and those that are not hilarious, are very informative on potato chips). So please allow me to quote some of them.

I took a picture on the Lay's shelf from Food Basic (a typical low-end grocery store chain) near my home today. It's not very clear but I will explain the flavours available for this brand of chips here in Toronto (I rarely eat other kinds because Lay's is cheap, and I am a cheap person).
From top to down, left to right: 1st row: Sky blue: Sea Salt and Pepper Dark Red: Ketchup 2nd row: Red: Original Black: BBQ Dark Red: Ketchup Teal: Salt and Vinegar Green (almost off screen): Sour Cream and Onion 3rd row: Same as 2nd 4th row: Red: Original Black: BBQ Blue: A big bag of assorted smaller bags of chips (about the same size as you can get from a vending machine).
Except the big blue ones at the bottom, all of those are probably 320g and sell for $2.49 CAN.
It's pretty good but it's not my favorite flavor. I like the feeling you get when you eat the first chip :D sour cream and onion flavor is the best for lays

I wholeheartedly agree. Sour Cream and Onion is amazing!
Today at the grocery store I was looking for Sour Cream and Onion but could not find any; but after some careful searching on other shelves I found some BBQ flavour ones, which I bought home :D
I like the ones pringles makes (or used to make?) sadly enough I only ate one box like that in the UK about 10 years ago and havent found another one ever since
when i first ate them i thought they were nasty, but later on they didn't seem so bad for some reason. Cheddar Sour Cream Onion for me, the taste of BBQ reminds me that i am eating BAD (unhealthy/junk) food for some reason.

I love Salt and Vinegar and the various variations (sea salt, malt vinegar, etc).
My chip ranking would go something like this:
Boulder Canyon (brand) Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar - the last few bags have been almost devoid of flavor, so I'm wondering if they changed the recipe, but a few years ago, these were amazing. As a note, if they really did change the recipe, and I didn't just get a few bad bags, then I wouldn't recommend this flavor at all. Amazing when seasoned right; terrible when not.
Kettle (brand) Spicy Thai - Excellent kettle style chips with a spicy/sweet flavor.
Lay's (brand ) Kettle Salt and Vinegar - I can't even eat the normal Lay's chips anymore, maybe excluding some original flavor every now and then.
Tim's (brand) Salt and Vinegar - Good Salt and Vinegar. Was surprised to find that I like the Lay's Kettle more, when they introduced them, because I had long progressed past the normal style of Lay's.
Anything else - Kettle chips rank infinitely higher than the normal style. Salt and Vinegar is usually my favorite flavor, and there are a few brands I didn't mention that I enjoy. I don't really like BBQ or Sour Cream and Onion.

Cape Cod Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, or Cape Cod Jalapeno and Aged Cheddar are easily 2 of my favorite types, you should try.
Dirty brand chips are awesome too, Honey Mustard, Salt & Vinegar, are all so good.
I've never seen the Cape Cod brand, I might have to try finding it online or something to give a try. And I had forgotten about Dirty. I really do prefer Salt and Vinegar to all other flavors, so if I ever recommend a brand, it's because they make good Salt and Vinegar. Dirty is pretty good, but I've only ever seen them in the small bags, and I prefer the first few brands I listed.
On a snack related note: The Buffalo Wing flavor of the Snyder's Pretzel pieces is absolutely delicious.

100% fucking true. It's amazing.
Only thing that angers me sometimes is the hardness of the pretzel pieces sometimes. If they were a little more manageable and chewable the flavor would really sink in.

A few years back, a store had a $10/10 promotion, so we bought like 30 bags to stock up (since they sell for almost $3 a bag). We had tried all the flavors before hand, and found that while the other flavors were good, the Buffalo Wing was leagues above them. They lasted us a good while, but for whatever fucking reason all the stores around stopped carrying the Buffalo Wing flavor. I've finally started seeing them in stores again, after years of not seeing them, and I've fallen in love all over again.
salt and vinegar is my nr 1 flavour every time. if i were to keep eating chocolate after chocolate i'd feel sick very quickly but i could go thru vast quantities of salt and vinegar crisps (or chips as you americans call them) and be licking up the crumbs after theyre gone.... so good and addictive
I miss Kettle chips so much and Skips/Nik Naks. We have an awesome selection of snacks in Korea, but I loved British ones too ;_; I like the little nacho snacks you can buy here for 1,000won with a free salsa dip and Goraebab.
They are sooo darn good. The best are when they are sour and not too salty cause that can get gross if you pig out on a whole bag, but the sour mouth puckering flavor is to die for. They go so well with beer.
These are amazing, I love them. Great great chip, but I really do like regular potato chips the most. I think Wise are my favorite chips along with cape cod if I am in an extremely crunchy/salty mood.
Best Chips are Ruffles Cheddar n Sour Cream , Doritos Salsa Verde, funyuns, spicy cheetos, Honey BBQ Frito spirals. But my favorite are jalepeno potato chips for sure.
Of course the ultimate best chips are regular tortilla chips with beans, cheese, beef, vegetables, sour cream and salsa.
PS- If you ever see a wingnuts restraunt go there and get the FAR EAST NACHOS. They are so fucking good wow.

They are legally "potato chips made from dried potatoes". link from wikipedia.
anyway, why argue a moot point? The Appeals Court of the Mouth of qrs has issued the following verdict: Any product X, howsoever it be made, such that when craving a potato chip, said craving may be satisfied by the consumption of X, and vice versa, may be called a potato chip for all intents and gastronomical purposes.
I bought a bag once. Regretted it. Yet now I have a hankering for a few. I think I could get to like them as a side. But I don't think I'll ever chomp through a bag while watching a movie, which I would with plain.
I do enjoy the occasional Salt and Vinegar, but nothing beats Roasted Red Pepper IMO. I gather this is an uncommon choice, because less and less stores are stocking them.

Go into your kitchen pantry and take out a bottle of vinegar, open it up and smell it. Now whenever you eat a salt+vinegar flavored potato chip think about that bottle of vinegar. That is why I hate salt + vinegar flavored potato chips.

Salt and Vinegar chips are ok.. but by no means the best!
Plenty of people eat their french fries with vinegar, especially boardwalk fries. I think S&V 'tato chips are just trying to imitate that flavor, though the low potato:S&V ratio makes them a little strong (kettle chips ftw).

It's very difficult to understand why other people like or don't like the same foods as you (there are exceptions). Salt obviously tastes good to many people. Vinegar by itself is pretty disgusting, but when added to chips it can be very tasty.
I don't understand how people like pepper or onion (like, slices on a sandwich). But, I recognize that I am just not able to understand it, and that most people aren't just weird.

They are great but they are sold in way to big bags in Sweden so I never get them. But I voted "Yes" because if someone said want some? and offered vinegar chips I would go "oooh yes that was long time ago yum"
I liked Sour Cream and Onion/BBQ chips when I was young. (Didn't every sane person?)
When I got a lot older I only liked plain chips and salt and vinegar and don't like other flavors much. I find that old flavors I like feel too strong now. I wouldn't want to try those flavor rush chips with tons of seasoning, I think i'd throw up.
Being adverse to foods with lots of seasoning might be due to the fact that I only ate ramen noodles in college for the first year or so. I still can't eat ramen noodles and why my tastes changed might be because of that.
I fucking hate those god-awful chips. I work at a convenience store and we never sell those atrocities. I wish they would just go away forever so I could finally be happy with life. Fuck, give them to the homeless, though I doubt even they would want to eat them jesus christ they are so terrible

Agreed. This topic is basically people comparing Lay's varieties, and then people comparing Kettle varieties. They're really on two different levels. The only type of Lay's I can even eat anymore is the regular, for that okay taste, but even that I can't do often.
Also, I'm not sure if they make them anymore, but Vegas Chips were pretty damn awesome. Obviously a Vegas only thing, or surrounding area, I'd assume. :p
I used to work for Frito-Lays and remember only enjoying the salt n vinegar either with a sandwich or beer. Not my personal favorite as I would rather just eat some wavy/salted lays instead.

I recycle cans and plastics LOL you're reading to deep into this. It's just an extra benefit to awesome chips. An being a vegan doesn't help the environment. You know hunting actually helps the environment by keeping down deer populations that can become to large in amount and cause famine because of a lack of food and hunters aren't vegans. Nice try though, calm down buddy.
Honestly, I'm baffled how you think being a vegan can help the environment.
I do like cape cod chips also, less greasy but still to greasy for my likes.

Salt and Vinegar is probably like original (pretty much just salt) chips dipped in concentrated vinegar.
They are OK I think. I had some Lays with mushroom sauce with onion and I ate like 2-3 chips at most. That shit was so horribly bad tasting I can't believe that nasty moisture passed the idea stage and made it to the supermarket.

I wholeheartedly agree. Sour Cream and Onion is amazing!
Today at the grocery store I was looking for Sour Cream and Onion but could not find any; but after some careful searching on other shelves I found some BBQ flavour ones, which I bought home :D
I think Sour Cream and Cheddar are better than Sour Cream and Onion, but I do like SC&O.
Know what's awesome? I had gotten a big bag of snack-sized bags of chips and in there were Doritos "Late Night Taco" or some such. Anyway, I bit into it, and OMG it tastes like a freaking TACO!... And I don't mean powdery taco flavor, I mean you taste meaty, sour creamy, spicy, crunchy, taco shelly, lettucey goodness. If you haven't tried it, try it. I mean, I bit into it and I jizzed myself it tasted so much like a real taco.
Salt and Vinegar is good. I really like cheddar cheese/sour cream flavors. I dislike Jalapenos, if I eat more than a few chips I will heave. BBQ is not great either but I just tend to not be a big fan of BBQ flavors in general, I may be the only man alive who feels this way.
I do like BBQ flavors once in a while, but a lot of the time it's way too fucking salty, and it's hard to eat more than a few without reaching for water. Jalapeno chips are so good though
Sunchips are delicious. And I had never heard of Ketchup flavored potato chips but they don't sound too bad. I put ketchup on my french fries after all.
However, Old Dutch does not offer the ketchup brand south of the 49th Parallel although not for lack of trying as Courtney Johnson, Marketing Coordinator for Old Dutch Foods, Inc. explains, “We have tried on two occasions in the past to sell Ketchup Chips in the U.S.; once in the early 1980’s and again the mid-1990’s,” said Johnson, “Both attempts resulted in very poor sales.”
Whether this state of affairs is a product of a limitation of the American imagination or a survival skill gained while living in a country where one lives under three feet of snow for months at a time is still subject to inquiry.
You have salt and vinegar chips in Canada ??? jesus , here in Poland we only have the Salty ones ! (yellow bag) . Id like to try them out sometime , i think i would love them cuz i love sour food !

Paints chips kick all those others chips ass....Or so I heard. I've never tasted them tbh.
My favorite chips would be made by Sabritas which is Lays mexican name for the potato chip line up. They have this flavor tomato+chili AND OMFG ITS OFF THE HOOK! I've tasted ketchup chips before and really like them but the tomato+chili is just too much to love.
I hate salt and vinegar chips. I don't understand why people like these, they just taste aweful. They ruined my beer drinking recently when the only thing to eat were these abominations and I was starving at the time
