One of the pillars of esports is good resources for tournament coverage, info on your favourite players and teams, and game info and how to play guides. These are all the things Liquipedia excels at providing a structure for. However structure is all fine and dandy but we need content and to make content we need people like you, who, for whatever reason clicked on this link and are now reading this post. Literally everyone* can contribute to the wiki by providing some information that is currently not there yet. Even our StarCraft II wiki which has seen over 800 000 edits still is lacking vast amounts of information.
Why then should you help out with the Heroes of the Storm wiki? well because even if the wiki is never complete it can provide more or less information, and then more is always the one preferred, so if you want to have a wiki as a resource the best way is to help out make it be so. As with all good crowd-sourcing the value created is bigger than the parts that went into it.
When I started helping out with the Liquipedia wiki way back in the Autumn 2010 the wiki was very barren by today's standards, my first edit was to make a page for my then favourite player MarineKing (called FoxeR or FauxeR since he was using "BoxeR" as his ID in GSL Open Season 2). I joined the #liquipedia IRC channel and started talking with some people and got lots of help, and made more and more contributions. It's was very easy to get started with helping out and for me personally it has only been a pleasurable experience. (Also you should totally join the IRC chat if you have any questions about contributing.)
So how can I help the wiki?
Well at the moment there's not that many tournaments going on and not too many players that have had the chance to do a lot within the game yet, but there are some and they can all use more help. However the area where we're still very spotty is in general game information. We need a lot more info on heroes and their abilities. for example, and general guides and help about strats and priorities on the different battlegrounds. The TL Heroes writers has already provided some pretty good guides and articles and if you want you can just copy that over (since it's TL licensed content at the very least) and there more people can improve on them over time or correct things that change with patches etc.
If you're hard pressed to find something to do, click the Random page link in the left sidebar of the wiki to get to a random page and see if there's not something you could improve on it after reading it.
*Everyone that is not banned on TL/LD/LH/LL etc.

I'm working on submitting some wiki edits.
I think it would be really useful to have spawn timings for the different events. I've considered adding them to the Map Page infoboxes located on the right-hand-side, but it appears they are templated already and it won't be an easy addition on my end.
Instead, I'm considering adding tables to the Map Pages with the various timings.
As an example of what I mean:
The first time that Shrines spawn on Dragon Shire is always at 1 minute 15 seconds. The Shrines always re-spawn 2 minutes after the Dragon Knight is defeated.
The Mercenary Camps activate 2 minutes after the game has begun. Each Siege Ogre camp will respawn 3 minutes after it has been captured. Each Knight camp will respawn 4 minutes after it has been captured.
I could add that sort of information into the separate sections, but then when you want to go find them, you'd have to skim the text. It might be more effective just seeing them in a table with text/values.
What are your thoughts?
Also, I've noticed that the Portal:Heroes page is missing 2 pictures.

if you need a change to a template, come to our IRC channel, bring a paint scribble to make it easier to understand, and we will happily help with templates. For everything else, we also love to help you getting started =)

If you make the tables on the different pages and come up with a standard way of presenting the info it'll be added to the infobox soon enough. Standards have a way to propagate like that on a wiki. I do think tables are better than just text if it's very static values, however maybe it's hard to have a single standard for all maps so it'll need to be tweaked in the wording or presentation for each one?
As for the portal and missing heroes we'll add them soon.... it's doable for anyone to do technically (IIRC) it's just time consuming to learn how to.

I wouldn't mind updating / providing info on some of the teams and players in Korea / China / Taiwan.
|
Sweden5553 Posts
That would be very nice, not much is written about them in English.
I should maybe also have pointed out in my OP that another way to contribute is to spread the word, if you find an article that helps you, share the link with other people, friends or social media etc. that would also help the wiki.

Is there a plan to have a 'talents' section on each hero page? I was going to start adding Brightwings talents, but realize that we need a different layout than the abilities due to the sheer number of talents. I have 0 ability to generate such a layout, but can copy/paste like a boss once we have one. I've browsed a couple of the other heroes, but so far don't see any talents listed.
Presumably some type of grid would work best, something like: http://heroesofthestorm.gamepedia.com/Brightwing
Though I can't help but feel that their grid is cluttered and hard to parse.

I'm going to try to find time today and add some content to the wiki. I have a bunch of tabs opened already with things that I've started, so I just need to fix them up. What's the irc channel that was mentioned above?

Our IRC is #liquipedia on quakenet.
As for Talent trees I have a few ideas. But I'll just probably make the most rudimentary kind of template for it unless someone beats me to it. (with fields for Icon, title, description, and the hardest one to phrase and explain but your "meta hero level" (as in do you get it at lvl 1, 2, 3, or 4)

Very few people's edits have an over all negative impact on the wiki, especially if you keep going since there is a slight learning curve to contributing to the wiki. So don't worry too much if you're creating value at the start, if you aren't early on you very soon will be as you understand how the wiki works.

So I see that a template for the talents has been uploaded to the Brightwing page. Looks great.
I'd like to copy/paste to another hero (working on Muradin), but there is obviously more going on there than I can see. For instance all the images for the template are obviously being stored and referenced somehow.
For now I'm going to copy/paste the entire talent section from Brightwing to Muradin, change the names and descriptions, and leave it to someone else to actually make it so the proper images are referenced. Is that the best way to do it? Is there something else I should be doing to make it proper? Should I not bother and let someone else with better skills take care of it?
Also, where are folks getting the images for the abilities from? I'm happy to go and grab/upload/reference all the appropriate images, but don't want to step on any copyright toes.

As far as adding names and descriptions to talents and leaving the images for someone else that should be fine. Right now the wiki is missing a lot of info and the more that is added the better, even if it is piecemeal.

I started going through and making additional edits on pages from what I can find from adding information, to grammar/spell check and editing inaccurate/out-of-date information.

There are some stuff I'd like to us to get to work on. For main page it would be nice to see which heroes are on the free rotation right? Also a page that lists all the daily quests should be nice. Speaking of which the show Daily Quest could probably use a page too with a list of all episodes with their topic and links to VODs. (Day9 Daily for SC2 could be used as a template for how to do that type of page.)

There's a start for you.
Once I get a image done or get one made up for the main page, I can edit it and add it inside the "Portal" location for you.
|
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Portal:Heroes
When you click on one of the tabs to "select" the field, it greys out the specific one. This should be flipped, it should grey out all but said tab.
Additionally, we can also add a tab for the "Free Rotation" in this as well.

Agreed on the feature in the portal, wish I knew enough javascript to fix this though... I just don't. I think had this had ticked checkboxes next to the names it would have made a bit more sense but as is it doesn't quite feel the right way round.
A lot of tabs... but agreed, or maybe we could just add a graphic element to show the free rotation ones (like a border effect)
The other option we have for this page is that we divide it into the 4 classes and the 4 "universes" but a 16 cell table seems hard to make work from desktop to mobile seamlessly.

Adding a talent:
|tier-1-talent-1=SomeName //This is the name of your new talent that associate with a .png template |tier-1-talent-1-content={{talent |name=SomeName //The name to be displayed in the description dialog to the right |description=This hero will make you attractive to girls irl! //The description of the talent }}
1. After you add the talent, click the 'Preview' button located at the bottom of the screen. 2. The preview will show a "Template:Talent icon no link/SomeName" where you expect the picture of the talent to appear. 3. Open that link in a new tab and paste the text below in the editing area
[[File:SomeName.png|64px|link=]]
4. Make sure to put the name of the .png you uploaded for the ability you are adding. Then save the page. 5. Go back to the talent page and click preview again.

Updated free hero rotation page for March 31-April 7
|
Bisutopia19035 Posts
This is a PM I sent to FT.aCt)Sony but is a good general answer for anyone interested.
Heroes: Currently Salle and I are working on better templates for presenting talents and abilities on heroes. I am going hero by hero (very slowly lol) and adding this current design http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Hero_Wiki_Template to each hero. If you are interested in doing the same thing I'd start working alphabetically backwards through this list http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Portal:Heroes .
Maps: The newest spider map has not been updated and needs to be filled in on the wiki
Teams: If your interest is soley on the competitive scene right now, well I don't have much knowledge of it yet. You can grab team templates or update existing ones. I feel this is lower on the priority list as the game is still in beta.
Strategy/Guides: This is an area that really should come after the basic game data has been added to the wiki. We are in beta still so there aren't enough active pro strategist that can put together guides at this time. Eventually this will become an extremely important section of LP and if you are inspired to add content here then feel free to do so.
The wiki is not always straightforward but jumping on the wiki IRC has been my friend. There is always someone there and everyone is super helpful. But as with any coding, experiment, learn, and enjoy the experience. Here is a link to the chat channel (no downloading of software or new account required!): http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=#liquipedia
I will answer any questions and if you need me send a PM or paste my TL name in your comment for fastest response times.

With the guide portal I think we should maybe look at doing it as just having external links is fine, but with the goal of moving them over to the wiki. The issue here is we can't copy paste everything, we can ask the author(s) if we can reuse their stuff (or if they want to add it themselves to the wiki) or if not we can also just copy the idea behind the guide and write it from the ground up (no copying content means no copyright infringement because ideas can't be copyrighted.)
Also obviously hero guides should be linked from the heroes own page too.

Updated the active team roster for Team No Mercy. Not really sure how to create a fresh page for the Taiwanese teams 'Fantasy" & 'INR'.

Updated the free hero rotation page for April 7th - 14th.
Edit: I also added talents to Valla's page, although I'm doing this at/while working so can't really add the images at the same time, I'll get round to them at some point unless someone else does, just easier for me to fill in text from here.

you upload it here: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Special:Upload
Be sure to add licensing information in the text field, and only upload if we are allowed to use it by the creator of the image.
Then add it to a page by using [[Image:{your image name}]]

Exactly what Valiver said.
We also see the latest changes through the Recent Changes
On a sidenote http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Tomb_of_the_Spider_Queen is still lacking a page. To make a page from scratch it's usually simplest to look at similar pages, in this case the other battleground pages and copy the code from them and fill it out with the content/details that are different.

There has been a lot of guides produced lately in time for open beta, are there anyone who would like to at least make a link list for them on the wiki, for battlegrounds and heroes they could be listed from the specific pages too, Youtube videos can be embedded on the wiki too.
I'm thinking that maybe having a Guides overview page might be good too, moving forward especially if we get people who want to write down more guide and general information articles on the wiki too.

What do you guys think? That looks good! It's that sort of thing that needs to be done on all the heroes to make the pages look complete. It's really only the abilities and talents that are done. So if you decide to even just fill in lore on the other heroes and nothing else, it would be a big help.

Give a spot where contributors are listed at the bottom of an article -- or the top, even. This will incentivize people and provide recourse for readers who want more info.

This place is called "the history page"

There are extensions that does this, but it looks a bit cluttered for a lot of the articles that reach like 50+ contributors.

Stylistic suggestion:
Every hero has a table called "Level changed stats", but the columns are not clearly labeled as "Initial" and "Increase per level". Hopefully this is changeable from one source instead of needing to go through every hero's entry...how to change it is not clear to me.

Just so i get it right: The first number is the initial value and the second number is the per level change, right? (I'm not too knowledgeable about Heroes, but i know where to change this)

Yeah, the first column is initial values and the second is the per-level change.
Also, on the front heroes page ( http://wiki.teamliquid.net/heroes/Portal:Heroes ) the nova portrait is overlapping into the section below it. (possibly because a new hero was recently added?)

I'll go fix the first issue, can you send a screenshot of the nova portrait thingy?

I think that if life regen and mana regen were labeled as per second it would be better too, but maybe that's obvious.

Ok, this should fix itself within the next 24 hours Thanks for the heads up!

Many hero talents do not have per-level increases to them listed. I've started filling them out on Zagara and Chen, but am unsure of the exact notation I should use.
I'm assuming I want to list them as BASE + (additional amount per level). So 10 (+1 per level) would be:
At level 1: 11 At level 2: 12 At level 3: 13
etc.
But some figures I'm seeing in the wiki are BASE + (number of times leveled * an additional amount), so 10 (+1 per level) would be:
at level 1: 10 at level 2: 11 at level 3: 12
etc.
Which version should be used? I generally feel like +per level should just be for all levels(including 1), but I don't want to deviate from an existing style if there is one.

I guess the question is "When should the base start?"
For instance, ETC's stage dive is a skill taken at level 10 and damage is currently listed in the wiki as 220 + 12 per level. But the formula (if you want to know for an arbitrary level) is 100 + 12 per level. (so at level 10 it does 100 + 12 * 10 = 220 damage.)
I'm happy with starting to change things, but it seems like many entries were made on the assumption that you start at the skill's level and add from there.

All of those numbers have been added by lots of different people using different sets of rules. And as you said, some sites start the count at level 1 and list it as 12 (+2 per level) when they mean it starts at 10 base damage and goes up 2 damage per level to be 12 damage at level 1.
At some point I was going to go through it all and standardize it to be [level zero base damage] (+XX damage per level). I think that's the best option, but atm it's impossible to tell which sets of numbers are which way. I believe almost all the pages are the level 1 base damage method currently.

I will double check as I have free time and go through them one character at a time, doing the base [lvl 0] + [stats per level] formula style. I'll use tooltips and the character card in try mode as my go-to source material.

I just realized that overlapping issue is still happening. I was using my work computer, which runs on a much lower resolution than my home PC. if you adjust the width of your browser to be tiny, the character tiles tiles they auto-resort themselves. If the window is very thin, then they will start stacking over the section below them like in my screenshot above.
This affects functionality on lower-resolution machines like workstations, and possibly on smaller devices.

Just put up the start of the Infernal Shrines page. I guess I'm kinda waiting on Blizz to update their own site with the new bg so I can borrow some of the assets from it to flesh it out, but it's a start.
