I still enjoy HotS as an e-sport, though, it was simply released 4 years too late, so Dota 2 and LoL were already too far ahead. As a true blizzard fanboy, I will never try those games though!

Nonono. That was not about release time. That was all about ridicilously bad launch of HotS. I don't know how but Blizzard decided to send me a beta at that time. Game was soooo bad. Talents, heroes, UI, gameplay... Everything. But the worst part was marketing. Most people couldn't find access to beta and they watch streams. There was a big hype. Then they realized the game sucks... They can't try themself and they don't enjoy watching. Hype was over almost immediately. Blizz fixed some of them (UI is still horrible. Its a monstrosity!) but MobA player base doesn't give another chance. I really can understand that. Moba genre has so many different choices and no one wants to try a game twice. Joke names also Blizz's fault. Due to low viewership, players cannot get decent sponsors. Blizz did nothing to promote HotS e-sports at launch. Now they are trying hard. Yet unfortunately... I don't believe HGC will continue at 2018. HotS would be great university thesis about "How not to market a potentialy perfect idea?"

They announced months ago that the league would begin in January, and we're already in January and there is still no official announcement, just a comment on a reddit thread with a date. It blows my mind that they didn't give dates and details in mid December at the latest. It seems like they must be scrambling things together on their end if they haven't even been able to solidify a starting date until two weeks before. I really hope this won't be indicative of the the production quality of the broadcasts or the clarity of announcements once things begin. Hoping for the best but confused about it so far.

Spring season is going to be a clusterfuck of Blizz trying to coordinate with ESL/DreamHack and OGN/Netease while simultaneously making shit up as they go. I'm not even surprised anymore. I'll be even more unsurprised if half of the games are on a community stream which you can only find on Reddit.

With HGC 2017 right around the corner, we’re excited to unveil the official competitive Battleground pool for the inaugural season of play. Until the Mid-Season Brawl, HGC and Open Division teams around the world will duke it out on these battlegrounds week in and week out. This list is subject to change after the first phase of play as new Battlegrounds are potentially rotated into the pool. The Battleground pool is as follows:
For Battleground selection, one team will be elected ahead of time to go first in the banning process. This team will strike one Battleground from the pool, then the opposing team will strike one. The team that banned first will then get to select which Battleground of the remaining seven they would like to play, with other team getting the first pick in the draft. The loser of each game in a series will have the option between first pick in the draft, or the selection of the next Battleground. Be sure to check back soon for more information regarding HGC Opening Weekend!

The opening weekend of the Heroes Global Championship (HGC) is fast approaching. Sixteen top Heroes of the Storm® teams, eight in North America and eight in Europe, will begin their quests for championship glory playing in new leagues, under a new structure, and at a new level of professionalism. Once they’re joined by teams from Korea and China, these teams will set the stage for a remarkable year of Heroes esports. The first match of HGC 2017 will kick off on Friday, January 20 at 9 a.m. PST/6 p.m. CET with Team Dignitas vs. Misfits. All series will be a best-of-five. The full opening week schedule for North America and Europe is as follows: Friday, January 20
Saturday, January 21
Sunday, January 22
Looking to the East, the final seven Korean HGC teams will be determined by January 22 after qualifiers have concluded, with the HGC Korea season kicking off February 3. All regular season games will take place live at the OGN studio and will be broadcast simultaneously in English on the official Heroes of the Storm Facebook and Twitch channels. All series will be best-of-five and will be streamed every weekend throughout the season on Fridays at 1 a.m. PST/10 a.m. CET. The casters piloting the ship this year will be none other than Gillyweed and Dreadnaught for North America, Khaldor and Trikslyr for Europe, and the duo of Wolf and GClef for Korea. The Western casters have made the journey to Southern California, from where they’ll provide the play-by-play commentary and analysis that fans have come to know and love. A special guest will be filling in for Khaldor for the first week while he packs his bags and heads west. Eastern Skirmishes In China, Netease, in partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, will host the HGC Gold League. The region is still finishing up the Gold Series and will join in the full HGC festivities around the time of the first Eastern Clash. Korea and China will run their premier HGC leagues with eight teams apiece, and each region will have their own Crucible to test the merit of those up-and-coming rosters vying for a spot in the top tier. All HGC games in North America, Europe, and Korea will be streamed on twitch.tv/BlizzHeroes and Facebook.com/HeroesEsports, which will be live Fridays through Sundays during the regular season, with one hour breaks between the European and North American slate of games, and four hours between games in North America and Korea. After several weeks of regular season play, the first exhibition clashes will begin. The Western Clash will take place at IEM Katowice on March 3–5 where qualified teams from North America, Europe, Latin America, and Australia & New Zealand will compete for their share of a $100,000 prize pool. Meanwhile, on March 17, the first Eastern Clash will take place at the Gold Series Stadium in Shanghai, with another $100,000 on the line for teams from Korea, China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. We’re also excited to disclose preliminary details on the Mid-Season Brawl, the first major international tournament of the year. For MSB, Heroes esports will return to DreamHack Summer in Jönköping, Sweden on June 17 with $250,000 up for grabs to the twelve best HGC teams from around the globe. This should be an exciting year for the Heroes of the Storm esports scene—when the HGC gets underway on January 20, there will be no shortage of competitive play to enjoy. Join us on January 17 for the relaunch of the official HGC site, updated to feature the comprehensive 2017 schedule as well as league standings, news, VODs, and more. HGC Korea news: "All regular season games will take place live at the OGN studio and will be broadcast simultaneously in English" Team renames: Bstep = Denial Superstars = Dumpster Tier Superstars Synergy = Russian Circus Expert = Two Bees Determined Chu8 = Team 8 Tricked eSports = Damascuz bois TempoStorm = Astral Authority = Murloc Geniouses Grandmaster Jackets = Team Freedom Trikslyr is no longer community manager: Taking the casting position was a contracted position, not a position posted as a Blizzard employee. So, long story short, I'm no longer a Blizzard employee, thus no flair. But, I get to cast and be a part of HGC and work side by side with Blizzard! Pretty exciting.

More details on Qualifier: Online Qualifier will be single-elim Bo3's to narrow down to 24 teams. (in the past, a team usually only have to play one or two sets to advance). Offline Qualifier will be six groups round robin. Winner of each group advance to HGC. Both Online and Offline Qualifier brackets are determined by OGN, seeding based on standings in Fall Super League..

Regarding my question on roster changes: Teams can replace a player from their Active Roster under the following restrictions: North America League Teams may replace one (1) player in the following transfer period: May 29 – June 10, 2017. The replacement player may be a member of the North America Open Division. Here is the full rules PDF.

Not that I could do better--- but I do wish pro teams could make better calls. Knowing whether you should be engaging or not engaging is stuff I want to be wowed by when I am watching. Not wondering why the diablo is charging in 4v5, or the stitches is trying to get a kill while his team is getting dismantled.

With so many games I would love some recommendations :D - For me, the best series was Misfits vs Fanatic - great level of skill, up to korean standards, good matches, non-one-sided series. - Misfit vs Dignitas comes in second, great level of skill, even though the series as a whole was one-sided. - Naventic vs TempoStorm could be a good second for you, if you love nailbiters - but for me the level of play was lower - not "clownfiesta" level, but sadly NA seems to be alot lower in skill these days All other games were either roflstomps or looked like some Diamond games I have every day... PS:If you are solely looking for "strange" games or games with rarely used heroes, you can try Team 8 vs B step Game #2. Firstpick Artanis, Kahrazim, Zuljin in there

Are they really spending those two weeks learning the new patch or are they spending that time practicing on the old patch that is where they will compete? If they aren't really learning the new patch during that time I don't see the advantage of delaying it so long. It made sense when teams went weeks and months between tourneys, but not now. Do you think that the playing on the old patch is partly tide to not being able to use new heroes for two weeks? For me that would make the most sense, but otherwise I agree with it being quite silly not playing on the latest patch details, would be good to see teams semi experiment with the changes on the fly.

That doesn't really make sense, if that's the case then there should be rule about that, it's not like that they could pick a new hero and get away with it... other tournaments that were played on live servers had that rule and teams simply weren't picking new heroes but still could get old that are reworked/buffed/changed.

Though i suppose it on the line so to speak, since its just a round robin. Production is excellent too, with the transitions, and the skype interviews after. I don't think NA is very good, but ...interestingly enough i'm not sure the gap between the teams is all that big in NA, feels like almost anyone can take out anyone. Besides perhaps the remnants of cloud 9.

It has similar format as other regions. But to avoid time clash, it will be always on Monday and Tuesday. The time is similar to HGC KR. No news on an official EN stream, since no EN casters are there.

I played a grand master level game a few days ago where the opposing team went double support on cursed hollow and we won easily without even having a warrior. We just went good old abathur azmodan cancer push comp, if you don't have good waveclear it's basically impossible to beat. I'm very glad double support has counters otherwise the game would be very boring Falstad also fell off a bit, he still has good utility (gust/fly) but his damage isn't the best.

+ Show Spoiler + Game 1 on Dragon Shire: Tons of aggressive play from Dignitas earns them an early lead that they keep for the entire game. 15 kills to 0 kills, and Dignitas goes up 1-0 in the best of five series. Game 2 on Sky Temple: Even early game in levels and structures, until around level 12 where Liquid starts to get some key pick-offs, steals the boss at level 14, and carries the momentum for a few levels heading into the late game. Zagara keeps Dignitas in the game with some decent split-pushing, and then at level 20, a ballsy decision by Dignitas earns them a tiny opening to the core through the top lane but Liquid's defense is too strong. Tied series at 1-1. Game 3 on Tomb of the Spider Queen: Dignitas gets the first set of webweavers, split-pushes for experience, and then right afterwards picks off a few Liquid players for an early lead. Dignitas forces another engagement at level 11 before Liquid hits 10 to increase the level lead further. 8 minutes into the game, a second set of webweavers from Dignitas puts them way ahead in the structure count (all 3 forts down vs. 0 down). 9:30 boss from Dignitas, denies the turn-in counterplay, Dignitas increases their lead further to over 3 levels ahead, third webweavers from Dignitas. A few minutes later, Liquid falls. Dignitas up 2-1. Game 4 on Towers of Doom: Genji for Liquid! Around the 4-5 minute mark, Khaldor and Trikslyr have a pretty awesome one-liner back-and-forth thing going on while the two teams fought over the bottom altar. Dignitas hits level 10 a tiny bit earlier with a 32-28 lead, but the game is pretty much tied in both levels and core hp up through level 12, when Liquid uses their heroics prematurely and then a few seconds later lose three heroes. Then Liquid answers back with an altar steal, and ties up the experience race at level 16. Then Dignitas picks off another hero and nabs two altars, up 22 to 11 core hp. 18 minutes into the game and neither team has captured any forts. Then suddenly, Liquid wins a huge team fight and takes forts and takes boss. Tied game, both teams at level 20 with similar core hp, and then an absolutely nailbiter of a battle happens! Best fight of the series hands down. Liquid really close to winning the battle but then Dignitas somehow holds and beats Liquid down, which secured the game for Dignitas. This was the closest game of the series, by far. Dignitas beats Liquid 3-1! Dignitas and Fnatic move on! Game 5: N/A.

When they were Misfits, I wanted to cheer against them because I didn't like their playstyle. After TL adopted them, I began trying to support them, but they haven't had the level of success that makes being a fan enjoyable.

Soul Torturers making a fair show, I'm not sure they look quite matched up, but they look like they're definitely not just gonna roll over to the Best Team In The World. L5 Stitches 2 good tho. I take everything back, L5 looks ten times as strong with this Stitches play. ST seem like really solid teamfighters, not enough to take L5 out, but I look forward to seeing more of them Oh Dread, you gotta practice concision in your questioning, lol. RIP Translator, to quote twitch chat. That being said, I like L5 way more than I like MVP.Black atm. KR looks good but not unstoppable and I look forward to seeing how things shake out.

There will be plenty of time for super climactic matchups coming in the bracket. The playoffs are a double elimination bracket, all Bo5 with a Bo7 finals. The group stage feels like a constant grind, but I like that it's nothing but constant action where literally every game counts.

As I understand it, getting people to defend the Core was exactly what Roll20 wanted. Then the rest of the team could have won the beacon and triggered a winning Zerg push. SPT tried to avoid that by winning the 5v4 so they could defend safely, but Roll20 managed to lose it slowly enough for Genji to kill the Core.

He was hardly carrying, he was just playing Muradin and ETC and being able to hit stuns with near perfect accuracy. Towards the end of his time at Black he was a liability with his positioning and decision making. But yeah, they aren't as sharp as they used to be, but obviously they are still adjusting. They looked a lot better week after week up to the Clash after the MSB; it was a surprise that L5 had improved so much themselves. Rich said afterwards that he felt a lot of responsibility as he felt like he and they hadn't practiced enough, and that he was committed to working even harder for Blizzcon. So they will only get better I think.

Super happy Dig took their series, and equally happy that Roll20 looked so good. Tempo bums me out, its like, wow they're playing well, too bad they can't bring that to offline events vs other regions. :'(

Roll20 gets insanely far ahead each game, then tries to figure out the one way that they could possibly throw the game, then they do exactly that and allow for a huge comeback for EID, and then the end of the games become unpredictable.

I think the best contenders would be (if only needing one more hero) Protoss. Overwatch might be awesome too with Ana now. Terran is damn close to greatness with a really solid solo warrior though. I also think Team Angel would be insane, but that'd require, what, two more angels? Malth, Tyrael, and Auriel are all consistently pretty great. Honestly, if they released like 6 more heroes it'd be awesome to have a tournament where everyone gets a Theme Team by drawing lots or something or drafting beforehand. Warcraft Undead is also probably close to being really good. Stitches/Arthas/Kel/Sylv/healer could be legit.

1. Pick a solid comp in game 1. Play well, win. 2. Pick a solid comp in game 2. Play well, narrowly lose. 3. Ensure you have last pick. Let the other team draft something that can hardcounter one specific thing. Pick that thing. Lose badly. 4. Feel proud that you placed top 8.

The series between GLuck and Feliz also showed that teamfighting is important, I think. It's ironic that teamfighting is the factor differentiating these teams after the big battleground changes. You would think that one team would just dominate the other in terms of rotations and snowball the game, but that hasn't really happened yet.

I might be prejudiced and I get to watch only a tiny fraction of the Korean HGC games, but every time after a meta shift, seeing their ideas - and their execution - revolutionize the game is so much fun. I hated the across the board support nerfs as a player, and was resonably okay with double support as a viewer as well, but especially the Sky Temple game was top notch entertainment.

Diablo Lightning Breath has a bug that causes it to count as part of Diablo's hit box, so anything targeted under lightning breath hits diablo instead. It was initially going to be banned from Mid Season Brawl because they weren't sure they would be able to fix it, but they just changed their mind after feed back and after finding a fix in time.
