Ok, this question had kind of been already raised soon after HotS released, but because the game had not been in an active development after release, it died down. Now we have another installation of SC coming, this time to set things right.
Suggestion: replace the atrocious, hissing, unpleasant (and unzergish tbh) zerg advisor voice with Abathur. For clarification, advisor is the voice that you hear when you don't have enough minerals, must construct additional pylons, under attack, etc.
To be honest, I consider SC2's unit sound effects generally a step back from the first game. They are dull and don't pack any punch (with some pleasant exceptions like thors or colossi), but by far zerg advisor is the worst. These hissing, bitchy sounds are not even close to the overmind from the original SC that made zerg sound like an unstoppable power, they sound nothing like powerful or confident. I tried to keep content with that, but then after completing my first zerg evolution mission I heard Abathur say "Evolution complete" and I immediately realized that it was exactly what was needed.

I voted "Yeah, replace totally without looking back." But actually I think it would be great (from their perspective) to add it as a voice pack you can buy, and see how it goes.
But yeah, I've never liked the queen voice, and have wanted it to be Abathur for ages and ages.

i like abathur in the campaign but i think i would get tired of hearing his voice on ladder. the queen just feels appropriate for zerg to me. honestly i think people just dislike it because it's a female voice, which is silly. but yah customization would be great. probably "not a priority" for blizz though :/ or they'll come up with some reason to say it would "confuse people"
It's actually this kind of thing that is the only way I can see Blizzard adding additional monetisation to the game. Skins etc don't seem as applicable to the RTS genre as they are to others

Never hear the Adjutant getting complaints. She's much more succinct with her commands and pleasant to listen to. :p
I also think having a queen as an advisor is slightly redundant considering we already use them as units.
Would totally pay money to listen to something else over the queen advisor. I'd even take the overmind back.

i meant because it's a female zerg. i think people have this idea that zergs have to have male voices to sound gritty or intimidating, as if scary bugs are a masculine thing and a female version "ruins" it. that's what i meant. the adjutant is just a servile computer, which fits better with a lot of people's stereotypes :p
regardless everyone has their own opinion, but i've never understood to any degree what's "annoying" about the zerg advisor. it's just... what a female personified zerg would sound like? i didnt consider that it might be seen as annoying until i heard a lot of people complain about it. i guess it takes all kinds. and in any case i think giving people the option would be great, but blizz has a habit of calling anything they don't want to do "confusing for new players" (i'm not normally a pitchforker, but seriously!)

The Queen's voice would be less unpleasant if they lessened that annoying reverb-y sound effect she has going on. Metamorphosis Complete drives me up a wall. Also, wouldn't a Queen fit that stereotype just as well as more or less a servile Zerg? I dunno if I really buy the notion that people don't like the Queen's voice because of it not fitting people's gender stereotypes...
Abathur would make an amazing voice pack though, he was my favorite part of the HotS campaign and additional voice pack options would be incredible.

well naturally no one is going to come out and admit that that's the reason they don't like it. just a theory, doesn't really matter though. to me it's fine, i literally never even thought about it until i realized a lot of other people don't like her, so the explanation that she's "just annoying" is as crazy to me as my explanation is to you. i can't deny that the support for the abathur voice seems overwhelming, so it would be a cool move from blizzard to add him as an option or a purchasable.
the concept could go to cool places. reaching level 35 terran and unlocking the raynor advisor would be pretty awesome :D
I've always felt disappointed by the queen voice. It's grating, I also haven't played Zagara yet in HotS, partly for that reason. Abathur would better, though not as good as the original Overmind.
As to the male/female thing, I don't recall Dehaka getting rave reviews, although Day9's imitations were hilarious.

Tychus/Mengsk would probably actually get me to play Terran for once, and a Selendis voice would be amaaaazing.
Voice packs really do have an immense amount of potential
Abathur was by far the most zerg-y and interesting character in the HotS campaign. I replayed that campaign just to go through all the conversations with him again.
Would now be a good time to point out that Abathur and the overmind are both agender? Don't think it is related at all to the gender. I say never look back - I find myself muting the game when I play zerg. Agree with SmileZerg too - Abathur is one of the most brilliantly "zergy" characters Blizzard has ever made.

yooooo... what the fuck are you talking about? LOL
Abathur in particular doesn't interest me, but I'd go for Dehaka. For the other races, I'd love to see Mengsk, General Winfield, Selendis, and Zeratul. Hell, if you could get Stukov from the BW, that would be neat too.
On April 08 2015 16:15 ZackAttack wrote: I totally support this. I wish there where different voices you could choose for all the races.
Agreed, I totally want the sexy announcer from Unreal Tournament Which means that fully customized voice packs would be awesome, I can see some people would be satisfied with Day J voice pack, TB(thinking about it, maybe Genna Bain would be cool too, she has some good moments when yelling at TB in their common game reviews ) etc.
So I will pick OMG YES YES YES option just to move it towards voice packs ^_^
Having different voice packs for all races would be so great compared to different skins that are kind of annoying for the other player. I really hope blizzard gets this, i changed from german client to english and now i think about switching to french just because of that annoying zerg announcer. Anyone knows a language where it sounds less annoying than in french?
Queen voice is the only one making sense though. But selling voicepacks is probably a cool idea. Sound and Design crew of Blizzard still seems to be busy though. Otherwise its not much work on the programming side.

You could have Selendis, Artanis, and Zeratul for Protoss. Raynor, Horner, Arcturus, and Valerian for Terran. Kerrigan, Abathur, Izsha, and Overmind for Zerg. That's a really cool idea.
I've gotten used to the Queen voice. I don't think it's that big a deal.

What? Wat? WAT?! I think you're forgetting someone. Because clearly we need Tychus, Tychus, and more Tychus. Anyway, in all seriousness, yeah I like you're ideas.
Don't know if Blizzard is really interested in any of this, but it would be something fresh for multiplayer that doesn't risk interfering with the other player. (Like some people complain about with unit skins.)

Yes please. The Overmind was my favorite character from the campaign. I hate that they tried to replace him with Kerrigan. She's nowhere near as epic as he was.
Adding voicepacks requires what, changing out some sound files? They could sell them for $10 a pop and people would buy them. Fenix voice pack for protoss? I know I would.

I thought Kerrigan's voice in BW was pretty good.
Also, I didn't play HotS campaign, but Stukov is in it apparently? If so that's cool.
I never really understood the love for Abathur. I thought his dialogue was pretty bland: it didn't really seem to get much deeper than "Fragmented phrasing. Excellent for swarm. Must assimilate."
With that being said, I 100% support the notion of new voices. Free/paid, just give us some more customization!
I know I would definitely fork out some money for an Overmind voice.
Great, GREAT character with a real depth and proper arc in broodwar, pared down to a shitty retcon for HOTS. I loathe when games bring back dead or no longer relevant characters for absolutely nothing more than fanservice. WOL didn't need that shit, they introduced all new characters and then took the time to develop them into something we should care about. Even goofy little bit players like Swann and stedman were deeper than anything on the leviathan
Honestly, even abathur was only just tolerable because he acted and sounded alien, like zerg should (dehaka was similarly alien but didn't feel zerg-ey, though that was obviously the intent, he just had no depth.) Every single character in HOTS had no arc whatsoever (kerrigan's was paper thin) and were designed to be way too "human" Eisha was like a cheese grater to the gonads. The only characters with depth in HOTS were Valerian and Raynor, which even goes further to distinguish WOL as the better story.
Overall it was still a good game, but the plot and depth of character development were nowhere near WOL, which I guess is why it stood out as so substandard to me (along with the instantaneous, no-internal-struggle switch of kerrigan from human to zerg queen again, pissing all over everything Jim did in WOL. Even his direct quote "I moved heaven and earth to get you back" didn't ring in her ears as she drank the primal kool-aid) replayed them both recently and HOTS was a little more tolerable once I'd taken it all in, but it still feels like it's setting itself up for a really, really bad deus ex machina of an ending in LOTV. God I hope I'm wrong.
I could go on for days as to how HOTS could have been made into an unbelievably good story with only a little tweaking, but this is about LOTV and abathur's voice, which I still think feels very much like zerg. Nothing zerg has really hisses, so why should the voice. It's not like there is no female voice in SCII, the adjuctant is perfect.
it also makes sense because abathur is more or less the most knowledgable zerg about the function of the swarm, he would be the one who knows when you need more minerals or to spawn more overlords.
A question to the frequenters and mods: do people from Blizzard read this forum? Is it beneficial to make a similar thread on the official forums and link it to this one (and, if anything, is such behaviour frowned upon)? From the poll results I can make a conclusion that such a change is indeed a wanted one (marketable voice packs didn't really cross my mind before, it might be a cool idea), so it seems logical to spread the word further.

Re-posting on other community sites is generally well received. I can't speak to whether Blizzard reads TL as much as reddit and the b.net forums, but my gut tells me they don't. Someone else might have different info on that though.

IMO, best way to implement it is to just allow regular users to insert their own sound files in a folder.
Let the community do it. Saves them money, makes us happy, will not help anybody hack. Client side so it only affects the user.
Skins would be neat too. Community's been making its own wicked skins since Quake 2 and probably way before. Within certain achievable criteria, custom models would be cool too, as long as the game didn't replace burrowed or cloaked models.
To be honest, I consider SC2's unit sound effects generally a step back from the first game.
I would consider a complete audio rehaul a major, major buying feature if they did it. SC2's audio is very uninteresting and ineffective.
Contrast it to: Dawn of War 1, Brood War, Quake, Homeworld 1

I've never met anyone who does that at all, including the huge smelly nerds I come into contact with at local gaming stores.
That aside, why would an alien creature with little-to-no sense of individuality talk like a normal person?

Oh, lol, that would definitely put a damper on things. I don't think there's a more hated figure than Dehaka in this game.

I do disagree, but christ does it conjure a hysterical mental image, so thanks for that at least. Some go photoshop a fedora onto abthur.

The adjuctant, eisha, was worse. Way worse. She was like an autistic nine year old.

Izsha, you mean?
I don't even remember that, all I remember was dehaka being super annoying and i quit the campaign because of him (only to come back and reluctantly complete it).

Then why did the overmind need cerebrates.
Abathur even helped in creating (infested) Kerrigan, so the overmind definitely needed him.
He was added retroactively but cerebrates prooves my point, really. It should be cerebrate that should server the role of Abathur - who unlike them was killable and had all kind of unnecessary stuff like moving body. He wasn't really manpulating strains with his hands, after all.

The Overmind character concept is actually pretty cool. No killable character presence at all - just indirect effects (maybe additional minions, maybe buffs - kind of like abathur but more large scale).
