Story Many men have gone mad beneath the glare of the Shurima sun, but it was during the night's chilling embrace that Malzahar relinquished his sanity. Malzahar was born a Seer, blessed with the gift of foresight. His talent, though unrefined, promised to be one of Runeterra's greatest boons, but destiny plotted him another course; his sensitivity to the roiling tides of fate allowed other, unwelcome things to tug at his subconscious mind. In his dreams, where the veil of separation is thinnest, a sinister thing beckoned. For some time, Malzahar was able to resist its prodding, but with each passing night the voice grew louder, or perhaps deeper, until he could withstand the call no more.
He ventured into the desert without supplies, drawn by the lure of a specious charm. His destination: a lost civilization to the east, known to ancient texts as Icathia. Few believed such a place ever existed, and those who did were certain that the sands had long since devoured whatever remained. When Malzahar's cracked feet finally failed him, he found himself kneeling at the base of a bizarre crumbling obelisk. Beyond it lain the alien geometry of a ruined city and the giant decaying idols of dark and horrific gods. His eyes, seeing what others cannot, and what none should, were filled with the essence of the Void. His once shifting visions of the future were replaced with the immutable promise of Valoran beset by creatures of the Void. Standing alone, but not alone, amidst the echoing dunes, he noticed the familiar voice escape his own lips in a parched rasp, bearing three words whose weight trembled his knees: League of Legends. Now infused with the power of the void itself, Malzahar set off to the north to seek his fate.
"The land may melt, the sea may swell, the sky may fall... but they will come!" -- Malzahar
Skills Passive: Summon Voidling Q:Call of the Void=> 2 portals close on each other after a short delay causing damage and silencing all enemys in the portals. W:Null Zone=>Zone of negative energy for 5 secs dealing damage by % of life E:Malefic Vision=>Deals damage each second if the target dies while on Malefic Vision the visions pass to the clossest unit R:Nether Grasp=>Stuns and Supreses for 2.5secs while deals damage
Order I go R=>E=>Q=>W But always get all 3 skills 1 point before getting the Ult.
Runes I go with Magic Pen Reds, CDR Blues and Life Regen Yellows /lvl.
Summoner Spells I like to run exhaust+Ghost, this way i can defend my self from physical atackers while my spells drop them or used with ghost for an easy escape.
Masteries O=>9(we get magic Pen) D=>0 S=>21
Build Since i like to spaw spells i usually start with maki for mana regen and harras with malefic, then turn it onto a tear+boots, upgrade boots to merc usually then banshe or some spell vamp(mejais if im doing good.
As you may see i don't actually have a especific way to run him if someone wanna ad a good build i will thank them ^^ =D
Others So I love this guys and i really wanted to know your opinion on him as a champ since i almost never see him in ranked and i would love to run him(im very close to buying him and 6300 is big money XD)

If I'm not mistaken Malzahar is generally considered to be the worst caster in the game. There are many problems with him:
- No reliable CC (his ult stuns you too technically since it is a channel, so it isn't true CC and it's too easy to interrupt in teamfights) - Easy as hell to dodge Q so it is easy to dominate him during the lane - Shitty W, it's just black soil but bad - Squishy as fuck - No escape mechanism
He can dish out insane damage and he is fun as hell to stomp pubs with but you don't see him in ranked for a reason. Malzahar could use a makeover, I really enjoy playing him too but he's just bad.

He used to be pretty meh, but he's been getting steadily buffed over the past few months. Only a matter of time before he's the new FotM OP.
Best build is CDRTankzahar with Aegis buffing your voidling army

O.o sounds interesting mind to give a more detailed explanation of that build?

"Normal" malz benefits from a RoA for a little tankiness. Laning isn't his problem because E is really quite good. It can be used to farm similar to puddle. Pool doesn't become an amazing source of damage unless you have an AoE stun on your team until late game. Malz needs enough tankiness to safely ult someone - AP isn't as big a concern even though you have great ratios because you should be able to gib whoever you ult anyways and that's your main job - remove someone important from their team and spread whatever damage you can. E has a low cd, but it's too short range to do much. Fun fact - Q strikes twice, so by itself it still silences Nunu and Kat through veils.

Core items are Aegis, Archangels, and Frozen Heart for maximum hilarity. Then you'll go Rylais/Zhonyas/Banshees/Void Staff as needed. Spam your spells everywhere, farm and push like a boss with 1-2 voidlings up at all times.

-His ult can be considered just as good of a CC as say Ashe if not better because it is a targeted ability. The fact that he can't continue to cast during his ult or move doesn't make it bad, you just have to pick a good place to use it. Spam out W>Q>R to hit someone, follow it up with E, and you just hit with every ability you have onto a single target. - His Q isn't any easier to dodge than any other skill shot but even if you never hit a champion with it in laning phase then you are still fine. Your E should be eating through the minions and you can burst minions down with your Q while an enemy is near them to make the dot jump to them. You should never be truly dominated in a lane as malz. -Your W really only fits into team fights and when you use your ult but it fits in very well because it is a %hp based. - He isn't any squishier than lux or Ashe... - Get flash and don't over extend and it shouldn't be a problem.
|
Malzahar is an extremely strong caster with all the buffs to him and the general weakness of other casters. Extremely strong caster doesn't mean much unless you are Anivia or Annie, but he's a decent champion and is played at the highest level (watch the ESL Majors Series final for LoL).
|
Malzahar was the worst caster in the game when he first came out. Here are all the changes he's received since then.
v.87:- Voidling movespeed increased to 451 from 419.
- Voidling attacks no longer reveal Malzahar through brush and fog of war.
v.96:- Nethergrasp range increased to 575 from 450.
v.98:- Base movespeed increased to 315 from 310.
- Malefic Visions range increased to 650 from 600, and cooldown reduced to 15/13/11/9/7 from 16/14/12/10/8.
- Nethergrasp range increased to 650 from 575.
v.100:- Call of the Void cooldown reduced to 9 seconds from 10 seconds.
- Null Zone mana cost reduced to 80/95/110/125/140 from 90/105/120/135/150.
- Voidlings now prioritize targets affected by Malefic Visions.
- Nethergrasp now suppresses the target. Range increased to 750 from 650.
v.103:- Call of the Void mana cost reduced to 80/90/100/110/120 from 90/100/110/120/130.
- Null Zone mana cost changed to 90/100/110/120/130 from 80/95/110/125/140.
- Nether Grasp Nether Grasp range reduced to 700 from 750.
v.107:- Null Zone no longer has minimum damage. Percent of health damage increased to 5/6/7/8/9% from 4/5/6/7/8%.
- Voidlings now spawn after 4 casts instead of 5.
Basically three key problems crippled Malzahar at release that are no longer relevant. His ult could be cleansed, his voidlings attacked targets at random, and his range was terrible. All of those were buffed out of him.

you just have to build him tanky. Glacial shroud(frozen heart) too good.
I would also go SoS, since the amount of damage he does is not his issue and he needs better regen than rushing spellvamp or buying silly regen items. (I also like rushing catalyst so they really can't kick you out of lane)
Archangel's on a caster that's already really squishy and depends on DoTs to do damage seems really meh. Sure you can kill that one person easily, but then anyone and everyone else will eat you alive. I personally run mp5pl runes and rush catalyst > RoA/Rylai > negatron/glacial > luxury items (finish banshee, archangel, spellvamp). Grabbing MR boots if they have any sort of nuke threat. Tanky as hell so you can focus on doing your job. end up with ~130 armor ~90 MR and 3k+ hp.
Your AoE silence, ult, and pool will do thier job in a teamfight regardless of how much ap you have.
he's squishy because he has no CC. he can't kite. Lux and ashe both have fire and forget stuns as well as slows. malz better kill whoever's coming after him, cause he sure as hell isn't getting away. (also why rylai is so good on him)

How does Rylais interact with Malefic Visions? Does it apply the slow each tick, or just once the spell is cast? Does it apply to targets that Visions jumped to?

Last I remember its slowed every tick

Having just played him; Every tick but its the AOE 15% slow, it applies when it jumps too.
Malz is pretty solid if you can land his Q appropriately. I found it especially powerful against tanks (like rammus and alistar) trying to initiate and being unable to do their 1-2 punch due to silence.
I built him really tanky, grabbing Rylais after boots.

Skipping all the intro stuff,
Skills EQWEER then R>E>Q>W E is your bread and butter spell. decent range, good harass, great farming. It pushes lanes like crazy tho
Runes Any sort of caster runeset will work fine. I personally swear by double mp5pl, because then i can do crazy things like never buy mana regen and still spam spells. I'd suggest defensive runes otherwise, malz won't kill people with a little bit of extra damage, he's not the bursty type of champ. Use your other runes for early game survivability.
Summoner Spells Flash/Ghost one or the other. you need an escape spell. Both is a little overkill, as once you tank up a bit, noone really wants to focus you cause then you can combo kill them ez. Teleport/Exhaust If you don't need exhaust to counter an olaf/yi/trynd/etc. then teleport lets you push lanes like crazy, and makes your own laning much easier. teleport for catalyst and wards, and then proceed to abuse the shit out of them.
Masteries 0/9/21 SoS is way too important to give up. especially since i build catalyst first, it means i can open mana sapphire and start laning with good regen. Drop a point from armor if you took exhaust. Full defensive masteries aren't bad, but imo don't help that much, because you're not actively trying to take damage, while mana regen, movement speed, CDR, and reduced CD on your escape spell will help you tons.
Build open sapphire + 2xpots Catalyst Boots Rylai/RoA Timing based: Boots 2, Negatron, Glacial shroud, Frozen Heart Luxury:Will of the Ancients, Banshee's, Abyssal Scepter, Void Staff
Timings: Boots 2: get them once laning stops. standard stuff.
negatron - get it when full teamfights start happening. When towers start getting pushed seriously. About the same time as any of thier casters has finished 2 big ap items (kennen with zonya/rylai, lich with archmage/whatever) you need a negatron to not die to all the random spells flying around.
Glacial - Armor isn't useful to you until thier AD champs start kicking in. Buy it then. which the CDR and stuff is nice, it provides all kinds of 'secondary' stats. you need hp and regen first.
Frozen Heart - Overkill on armor, but useful for the aura. Even non-AD champs do alot of auto attacking. -25% atk speed is redic good. Get it once your core is built. You need RoA/Rylai for hp/slow, a negatron so AP doesn't pop you, but then, Frozen Heart becomes the cheapest and best thing to buy.
Luxury items: spellvamp + tank = never die. Banshee if there's something you really want to block. Abyssal is kinda weak, but it's the most offensive thing you can turn negatron into. Void staff makes you hurt well into the late-late game.
Playing Malz
Early Game Malz is fine with either solo or duo lane. for most of the early game he wants to be left alone and farm. This is relatively easy because people don't want to stand in your pool, and as such cannot trade hits well with you. Harassing with E is good and relatively safe because of your pool again. If the creeps start pushing away, push the next wave HARD with E/Q/W so thier tower can start pushing them back quickly. If you can, b during this time to grab a catalyst/boots.
Once you have a catalyst/ward you can pressure them by pushing the tower. If they screw up positioning, you can pushing/kill with pool and ult. if they call for help, you just back up and waste their jungler/mid time, putting them behind. Use E when your voidling is up to get some really cheap and good harass in.
Midgame Once your lane is done, migrate towards dragon/mid. at this point, you farm/push mid/bot lanes when you can, and support dragon/mid/ganks otherwise. You pretty much keep pushing and warding to keep yourself safe, and farm up in preperation for the teamfights.
Teamfights/Lategame You are an anti-anti-carry. You protect your carry. With a long silence, a 2.5 sec supression, and the pool of doom, you can gib anyone and stop anyone from gibbing someone on your team. poke at them with E and Q, drop W in the tanky mashup to guarantee a win there for your team, and save R for those people charging in to gib your carry. Your crack voidlings have 150+ dmg at this point, so you will output a TON of damage.
Interesting Matchups
Pantheon Silence on top of yourself if he jumps. It stops HSS and lets you get away. Back off a little bit and throw E on him, punish him for as long as you can while his stun is down. If played properly, you should come out even. Once you get catalyst, his burst isnt' real scary anymore, and you can push him away with E harass.
Kassadin If you can land silences before he void sphere's you can win, but it becomes this wierd game of chicken where he rushes you to nuke and you have to hit the silence and he's trying to dodge it. If he doesn't dodge it you get free damage and potentially a free E. If he hits you and you hit him with e it's not terrible, but he has the burst to kill and you don't, so you need to come out ahead to 'win' the lane.
Things with longer range (annie/anivia/urgot/kennen/etc.) Silence on them, leaning slightly to their front, if they react slow, charge them and throw an E on them. You'll come out ahead because they can't nuke back. Run away before the silence wears off. It's mana intensive, so do it to keep them honest mainly and concentrate on farming. Once you get catalyst, go nuts.
Morde/malph/mundo If they're agressively trying to harass, you need to punish as hard as you can. your voidling will do a ton of damage back and not get aggro, so if you get a good E with your voidling, move up so it doesn't leash. This makes the trade work in your favor. Usually you can just stay back and farm.

worst caster my ass, if you want to say anything, its probably 'most underrated caster' since he's been viewed as the worst for a longass time. With buffs and people figuring out how to play him, hes become very strong.
@ 2nd, and 3rd points, the vast majority of his damage in lane comes from his e + voidling aggro, which hurts like hell, q is for farming and teamfights, no1 really uses it much to harass anyways so who cares. W is fucking amazing, not for farming, but for teamfights it has a massive net dmg output via % health. People simply dont realize that its there (kinda like nasus's spirit fire), or just assume it wont do much dmg, but it actually does incredible dmg, and is large enough that it can reliably hit 2-3 people.
In regards to cc, a rylais (in addition to giving you much needed hp and ap) actually makes you a very strong slowbot. E applies rylai slow on each tick, and naturally q and w provide aoe slows.
edit: something i forgot to mention is that puddle makes for inane baron dps
edit2: im reading thru the guides, does no1 else use flash/ignite? Makes for garen-teed lvl 6 kill, since ignite is castable while ulting (altho ur ult range is just barely longer than ignite cast range, so be careful)
|
a loose list of 'good' items on Malz: RoA Rylai Deathcap Glacial Shroud Kindlegem Banshee's appropriate Boots I can't think of anything else I'd buy on him that's not highly situational - qss to counter certain heroes, fon for protracted poke wars maybe, wota for trollin', etc. Malz needs a balance of cdr, survivability, and AP, so knowing how to adapt to the enemy team is crucial.
Also, regarding summoner spells: Ignite is something I'd take if I know the enemy team has a healer or if I have nothing else to take. Exhaust isn't really going to boost your killoptions now and it can't auto-save you from a melee dps, and malz needs ghost or flash (I prefer flash generally) to escape. Your main contenders for the second slot are Teleport and Clairvoyance. Ghost Tele if I'm solo top, almost always. Clair if no one else on team has (far too common in random pubs) and I don't want tele for whatever reason. Else ignite.
|
im a little confused at the frozen heart obsession. Its an ok item, but you really only want it for the cdr, just having roa+rylais is plenty of survivability. If you just want cdr, dfg is a pretty slick item (again, i believe its castable while ulting, less sure on this than ignite tho)
|
For all people wanting to improve their malz play, I have 1 piece of advice. It's very simple, but it will make you do so much better.
All you need to do is follow this rule: Don't use your ult unless you are fighting 2 or less people. This applies in a 5vt5 where 3 of the enemy champs are dead. Most malz's complain about lack of survivability when they are running into the middle of the enemy team to ult. Malz's strong point is his huge aoe spellcasting range, and his ability to do constant damage while not being too near his targets. Don't be fall into the noobtrap of spamming ult due to it's 1.5 ap ratio. While it does a lot of damage to 1 target, you are putting yourself in danger by standing still for 2 seconds, which is more than enough for a half decent team to burst you to death.
|
Malzahar is awesome coutner to vlad.
|
I don't get Frozen heart unless I really need the armor and as reduction. Glacial shroud is an extremely cost-efficient source of cdr and the other stats are appreciated, if not vital. Still, shroud is a low priority item that you also won't need if you can hold on to blue buff.
Also exadra's tip is a really really good one. Save pool for when a large number of the enemy team is going to be staying in one place for a while and save ult for when one person is out in the open. You can ult their tank in certain situations - few things are more demoralizing than watching your Rammus just melt because he's suppressed before he can DBC.
|
Another of Malzahar's strong points is his subtlety. Everything other than his ult can be very difficult to notice in the chaos of a team fight, and even when seen the consequences are often overlooked.
Call of the Void is the best example of this. Everyone knows it deals damage, but most overlook that it has a 3 second silence capable of cutting through a Banshee's Veil with skillful positioning and a little luck. Well placed Qs win team fights, you just don't get the credit for it.
Nethergrasp is practically a defensive spell in most team fights. Unless you need to pin down someone slippery like Yi or Mundo, it's better to use it to stop an enemy powerhouse from rolling over yourself or other squishies. When Akali, Poppy or Shaco jumps in to take someone out all your other spells should already have been blown and now you can buy a full 2.5 seconds for yourself or an ally. Your ult naturally focuses everyone's attention, so enemies who might normally slip in unnoticed are usually screwed.

Just started using Malzahar and he is really fun
Ive been going catalyst, rod of ages, sorc boots, rylia's, deathcap, then see what i need
Ive been running ignite/ghost. Seems to work ok, but i miss flash for the get out of jail free card.
But so far, so good!

Finish the sorc boots and catalyst asap obviously, but after that right straight ot deathcap, buying NLR first. Catalyst is basically all the durability you need early game.

Ok, I will give that a shot today and see how it goes.
I did enjoy the extra survivability factor with RoA, but I will see how he goes with a little more squishiness
He is my new work in progress :D
The 1st game I had with him actually went a full 60 minutes and had a full build.
Sorc Boots, RoA, Rylia's, Deathcap, Abyss Scep, and Void Staff. It was pretty crazy. By end game, both sides were smart and got resists and it had pretty great fights. Once I made sure to ult Kat though, it was a pretty easy victory. She is just sneaky in the middle of all the particles and animations to find her

Dcap Banshees is a much safer and more consistent build. Being stunned out of your ult is really shitty so by going veil you guarantee that your ult will have full effect each time or at least eat a ton of cc focus off other players of your team if they are that motivated to stop it.

HS has been running a pretty nice streak with Malz lately. His build is the same, Banshee's into Deathcap. HoG if he needs more survivability in lane.
|
I got to Rylia's then working on deathcap
but it didnt work so well since 2 members of my team decided to be dicks and stay at the fountain starting from 10 minutes in the game
I talked my team into not surrendering so we can be dicks back
we lost at the 29 min mark

next game went reallly well
They surrendered at 20
I was laning and got the blue buff. Holy crap he spams his spells so fast like there is no tomorrow and can harass so well with it.

sapphire -> cata -> boots -> revolver -> generic caster shit. Base damages are crazy so you can forego AP for early banshee's if you like or you can use your good scaling and just rush deathcap or w/e.

zzz, go 9/0/21 like a pro. SoS is noob when you have good use for that 15% MPen.

I think Turkey might do that but I play like a douche and use E on enemy heroes, so...
|
why use it on them? just put it on their creeps then kill their creeps, voila!
|
Because I use it on them and just last-hit creep naturally, lol. Unless it's something gay like Urgot where I have to use it on the creep to try to bounce it onto the Urgot.
I mean, what kind of question is this? You're asking Uta why he's trying to piss off enemy heroes in a solo lane?
Edit: Hint: One guy used to forego last hits entirely to zone the shit out of people with Pokey.
|
well, I'm moreso just saying that like, the options are: 1) get 6 free creep kills while the opponent can't get near without eating your nuke and regain massive amounts of mana or 2) use your nuke on opposing hero and actually lose mana without getting guaranteed CS
at least that's how I see it.
|
You don't get 6 creep kills, especially with low levels of E, I actually find that you lose a lot of kills to creep because of it. It's why I've gone and just relied on last-hitting, which is significantly more reliable until later when you just want to nuke the creep down.
|
plus if your opponent knows how visions jumps they CAN get close to creeps as long as they're not the closest.
|

I consider it close to annie's Q. Its pretty much a free spell after a few levels.

You also have to consider that when playing malz many rolls mp5 runes and 2 points in meditation atleast so you wont really have mana problems especially if youre getting doran blades.

Obviously more damage to lifesteal more, so not only do you have full mana but full hp as well.

you should see some of the stuff posted in the smashboards thread. there's a certain player who shall remain unnamed who runs Crit marks on all casters.

The real question is are they crit damage or crit%?

I once went against a heimerdingle back when he was 2 fucking annoying/op and he ran crit % runes. His wrench shit hurt, and if you tried to fight back he would spam the living hell out of you with turrets rockets and grenades.

If what you guys say is true about me, sure, let's go with it. As for my "insight" and my understanding of this game, since it's on par with CLG, people who have proven time and time again that they are usually going to win, I'm pretty sure that makes my understanding valid. Whether or not you choose to believe that I can see and play this game at the same level as CLG peeps is up to you. I see this game at a very high level, that's pretty clear. I play with 1600+ people all the time and they're quite mediocre. Whether or not I can actually perform at that level, is something I still am unaware of. I'm kind of bad for sandbagging like that and whatnot. But this is more of an aside than an actual premise to put forward in a rational debate. So don't bother responding please.

You're not zoning someone just by using E, though. It's not till the last minion that you actually have to give a wide berth to the bounce.
I don't understand why people want to polarize it into "only use on champs" or "push the shit out of creep waves," when it's obviously in the middle, since it's very good harass, but also useful to farm up some mana when you get 1.5 waves or so to bounce on. Most common problem I see with Malz players is always using E on minion waves and then hoping it last hits. They end up pushing the wave too hard and still miss out on CS.

would u risk doing flash->W->R combo when the opponent has flash up or just go with flash->R big malz question!!

Smart cast, sup?
But seriously, I'd only W (and possibly E) if I had brush advantage. Assuming this is team fight situation, flash R is enough most of the times. If it's 1v1, then you obviously bide your time, even if enemy solo has flash up.

for brush i like Q->W->R->E q to cut flash and other junk w for deeps r for lolpression and u can use E last since ur voidling will hit the dude u ulted since its 1 on 1

ok AP Alistar probably is. The wq combo gives you lung longer than most of malz spells plus lets you get away before really taking any damage, yet doing quite a bit. Ult breaks your ult so you can't combo him.
