I would hesitate to call it adaptation and flexibility because OMG's core style has not yet been affected enough by a major change to the game. They became strong under a version that plays more or less similarly to the way they play now, and they benefited from that version favoring their playstyle. I'll call adaptation and flexibility when we get a radical shift in how the game plays and see how they adapt.

They became the top teams in versions where the game suited their playstyles. It's not exactly a surprise that as the game shifts, they drop to teams that are more comfortable with how the current version plays. I don't think there's any team in the world that is strong enough at the game to stay unconditionally strong through changes to the game/general playstyles. Teams are strong in versions that suit them and weak in ones that don't.

This is League of Legends, the game where you don't adapt to the metagame, you wait for the metagame to adapt to you.

OMG was absolutely brilliant though. that 17 minute baron in the first game was called and executed perfectly. and the beautiful backdoor base feint in game 3 was just soooooo smart on so many levels. iG's kid got smashed by namei/sicca though. his cait was ineffective in both games.

I think in general, people overestimate the difference in skill between the best competitive teams and the worst. Particularly among the teams in China and Korea. The teams more or less have similar practice schedules, similar amounts of information, and similar opponents. Once you're among those top batches of teams, it's not going to be the case that one team vastly outmatches another purely on skill. What is true is that each team is going to have a playstyle or set of playstyles that match them, and likewise a corresponding set of comfort champions. This can obviously change and evolve, but this is a very slow process, generally outstripped by the rate at which teams switch/replace players, and definitely outstripped by the rate at which Riot changes the game. So even though the teams are roughly even on overall ability, that ability is spread to a widely varying degree of comfort with different champions, teamcomps, and playing out certain scenarios. And the changing game will favor a certain set of playstyles at any given point in time based on which champions are strong, and which are weak. I don't expect this to go away. People quite simply have their limits to how much they can do at one time, and team playstyles are dependent on the interactions between the players. Even in DotA, after a decade of play, this has not changed. The best teams still have their favored heroes and playstyles, and their success in a given version is driven by the success of those playstyles and heroes.

edit: ok I think heard them say Aaron. He totally rescued that replay analysis. I don't think the girls know much about the game.
