Despite the inherent huge mismatches that are going to happen, and despite the fact that it's WCG, I'm really excited for a big 20-team international tournament, and I want to see the best non-Worlds teams have to offer!
Kinda a foregone conclusion that it's gonna be WE, Blaze, or OMG, but I'll be rooting for Rampage and yoe Flash Wolves in my heart <3
|
|
Where is Gambit, fnatic, SKT?
|
If you want to watch the best non Worlds teams just watch OGN ^^

Well yeah this also shows that WCG truly doesn't mean a lot anymore. Let's hope for some nice China vs Korea battles, at least! (with Blaze coming out on top pls)
|
Yeah this tournament turned out to be more of a farce where teams drop out and decide to not go before it even started, lol.
|
Even if all the teams listed show its a terrible tourney Oo Its like a list of 3 A+ class teams and a huge portion no one has ever heard of Oo
|
I wouldn't say it's a 'terrible tourney', the quality in the knock-out stages will be pretty good. As for the group stages even though some of the more exotic teams aren't popular worldwide they all have sizeable local followings and it means a lot for them to be there, I can appreciate that.
I also can't exactly blame WCG for coL & Millenium making roster changes in the last minute or for Riot denying LCS players permission to play. It could have been much more but I'm fine with the way it is.
Plus there's also IEM Singapore, Dreamhack and the finals of the 2nd LCS promo qualifier this weekend so there's plenty to choose from.

Why not? What defensible reason does Riot have for disallowing LCS players from particpating?
The only one I can think of is Riot's incessant need to squelch serious international competition outside of Worlds.

How can things be so hard to run smoothly over there? I've never seen any Chinese tournament a) start on time or b) not involve several pauses. That with several thousand people in the crowd too.

I don't know what teams are playing. Looks like they are setting things up, but sounds like monte and doa casting. Although, right now they are talking about the dude getting pushed across for some unknown reason.
Sounds like Flash Wolves and MyM?

Although I could also see inability to participate in qualifiers due to LCS/Worlds schedule.

about halfway through the game, when the casters had nothing and OMG was down ~5k
trying to get chants for OMG going. ludicrous amounts of caster bias trying their best and not really suceeding at hiding disappointment as the game slipped away from OMG dejectedly praising ambitions kassadin.

These hugs, no wonder CJ Blaze keeps winning

well I didn't understand much but it was obvious that the OGN casters were pretty biased themselves. It's normal for a competition like WCG which is country vs country by nature, but I guess people don't have a problem with it if your country is always the one winning haha.
Which discipline did Iran snap a goldmedall in? I didn't watch any WCG at all except for this final.

What's wrong with that? WCG is all about nationality and of course they will pander to their audience, my local commentators do the same thing at my national team's football games or at the Olympics, etc.

I don't really have a problem with either. Casters being biased is completely fine to me, when I think about the football world cup or something similar it's just normal that the casters are with their home crowd.
It might be lame to see people leave before the game is over and only cheer for their team, but it doesn't seem to be an outrageously uncommon reaction. I don't watch a lot of football, but recently I watched England vs Germany (like two weeks ago?) and in the end the seats were getting empty so quickly it was hilarious.
We are quite spoiled when it comes to unbiased crowds in esports I think, which makes the crowds (like the Chinese ones) who are extremely biased stick out so much, but I don't think it's something to be outraged about. The China vs Korea rivalry has obviously become very prevalent in the world of LoL in 2013, with Allstars, Worlds and now WCG ending in a similar fashion.
|
Anyone know if there's some vod in chinese or korean ?
|
I'm well aware of the hostilities that follow any form of competition involving Korea and China, but I think there's more to this than this being a case of nationalistic pride going overboard.
There's almost no story lines to bring depth to the clash between these teams, other than sticking with the nationalistic rivalry that exists between the two nations. It's almost tragic how one dimensional the viewing experience becomes, with the focus being almost entirely on whether a Chinese team can defeat a Korean team this time round.
I'm almost entirely ignorant of the Warcraft III scene, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much better the finals for the Warcraft III was in terms of the overall atmosphere. You could almost sense the years of history, the intriguing storylines, not to mention the connection the crowd had to the players that brought them joy over the years. It didn't matter if it was a contest for gold medal between two fiercely competitive nations, because the stage set had so much more to offer than simple dick waving between two nations.
There's simply no sense of history due to the extreme measures Riot Gaming takes in order to keep their tight grip over cross regional competitions. Riot Gaming claims that the lack of interaction makes those few occasions all the more special, whereas I believe that it makes for very primal viewing experience that basically boils down to "can my guy win over yours". This was the first competitive setting where any of these players were facing against one another, and it might be their last in their entire careers due to the current lay out of cross regional competition. While Riot Gaming has been successful in keeping a shrowd of mystery over every single international competition, they also managed to suck out any depth it has out of it. Is the element of "we don't know what might happen this time round" so important to them?
I'm a firm believer that viewing experience only benefits from further depth. There are so many regions around the world with huge interest in competitive League of Legends, and I can't believe Riot Gaming isn't making the most of it by acting like a chick who believes withholding sex is the best way to sustain a relationship.
|
But does that really apply to the China vs Korea matchup? Those are the two big regions who are free to participate where ever they want it seems, or else we wouldn't even have had these two China vs Korea battles this weekened, since LCS teams couldn't participate in the WCG/IEM at all. It's obviously a dead horse about how it's in the West, especially on TL, but I'm not sure that China/Korea are heavily affected by these Riot regulations in the West.

Half of the teams from S3 Worlds, including the both finalists, were competing internationally at an offline event for the first time in their history. Let that sink in.
At the start of S3 when I realized that international competition was going to get the boot I was pissed but now I'm in the acceptance phase, just taking whatever crumbs they throw us knowing that I'll never be as excited about watching League as I was in Season 2. Most viewers don't seem to be bothered at all by this so I doubt things are gonna change much.

It's obviously a dead horse about how it's in the West, especially on TL, but I'm not sure that China/Korea are heavily affected by these Riot regulations in the West.
While they are less constrained than LCS teams, the windows for such events are narrow. They're only free to participate in what they want when Champions and LPL are between seasons. WCG was somewhat of an exception because OGN was a partner and producer of the event, they would have never taken a 1 week break for G-League or MLG for example.
A big part of the problem is that there isn't a universal calendar and everything is planned on short term. See for example how Chinese teams almost didn't make it to Worlds due to it starting sooner than initially expected and poor communication between Riot and TGA.

Some teams have quite a deep history like in the case of CJ Entus Frost and Invictus Gaming, and there's more to feast on for the spectator. The friendly banter between the players, past results, and the parallels we can draw from those past encounters enriches the viewing experience because we can delve deeper if we choose to do so.
There were of course numerous online tournaments that familiarized teams for both nations (that's where I discovered the talents the Chinese scene had to offer), but it is ultimately offline LAN tournaments that hits hard in the mind of the spectators, and that's where Riot Gaming's policies kicks in. The stranglehold Riot Gaming has over famous Western teams hurts international tournaments because that's where the money lies, and the few LAN tournaments that are lucrative enough for the Korean/Chinese teams to participate in are usually designed in a way that minimizes their exposure (number of berths, seeding placements etc). So yes, the aggressive stance Riot Gaming takes on controlling "their" teams hurts the storylines of the Eastern teams as a side effect.
