I'm a cop you idiot mafia
*Artanis[Xp] is helping me co-host this game. Any questions can be directed towards him or myself.
There are no coaches for this game. + Show Spoiler [Links to Day/Night posts go here] +
Introduction: Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.
The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules: Cheating: Cheating includes (but is not limited to): 1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information. 2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. 6. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host. 7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip. 8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts. 9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits. 10. Sharing accounts with other players. Only you may post on your account. 11. Breadcrumbing the specific phrasing of your role PM. Do not compare the phrasing in your role PM to prove your alignment. You can claim the abilities you have, but you can't use the specific phrasing of your role PM. 12. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host. Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.
Posting: Mod Font: This is mod font. It is reserved for moderators. Please do not use it.
Questions DIFFERENT FROM STANDARD At no point are you allowed to use the thread to communicate with the host. If I see a green text asking me something, I will modkill you without warning. You can also not say "I'm going to ask the mods this" or "I have asked them this" or anything like that. If I think your question warrants the attention of the entire thread, I will just make an announcement and not reveal who asked the question.
Note: It's okay to ask in green, and actually encouraged, before the game starts. The more we can clarify pre-game, the less questions will rise during the game.
Activity: You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.
Smurfs: This game does not accept smurfs.
Spam: Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here. This also means you should condense your posts when possible.
Encryption: Don't do it.
Editing: Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a modkill and a 1-game ban. This is the one part of TL where it is okay to double post or even triple-post. While you should try to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.
Inappropriate posts: If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM the host, a co-host, or Blazinghand before involving the other TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can discuss the situation with other members of the TL staff.
Reporting posts: The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, or Blazinghand before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately.
Play to win. This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without getting banned. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis, but this is a very short game. Don't sign up if you can't commit.
You have been warned.
Out of thread communication: It is common for mafia (and town circles if PMs are allowed) to use a medium outside of TL such as QuickTopics or IRC to communicate during the game. Please be mindful that other players may be more tech savvy than you and they may attempt impersonate members of your team or attempt to infiltrate your chat. You use these media at your own risk.
Observers If you would like to observe this game, please PM me for access to the observer QuickTopic. If you receive access to the observer QuickTopic, do not discuss this game with the players until this game is over.
Voting rules: 1. Voting is done in this thread. Please keep votes there, and only vote there. Do not PM me your vote. 2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance. 3. No conditional voting. 4. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game. You may vote for ##no lynch 5. Voting is mandatory. You may (NOT) abstain. 6. This game will use Instant Majority Lynch. I will try to post vote counts regularly. Once a person is hammered, please DO NOT POST until a host resolves the flip and the game enters night.
Signups: This game is open to anyone. Signups will remain open until 7 spots have been filled.
Game-specific rules: Modkills: This game follows the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, you will be punished beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to the ban list thread for questions about your punishment. Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.
Sitting Out: To sit out this game, you must do these two things during the signups of this game (assuming you are not currently sitting out a different game and the game in which you were banned has finished): 1. PM the host of this game, saying you are sitting out this game. 2. Post in the TL Mafia Ban List, saying that you are sitting out this game.
Note that because this is expected to be such a short game, I don't expect we will accept sitting out, but if you think you should be able to sit out this game, let me know and I'll think about it.
Replacements This game does not use replacements. Don't let your team down.
PMs PMs are not allowed in this game.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a 24 hour night/variable day cycle. For details see the game-specific rules below.
If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!

Game specific stuff:
This is an open setup. The following roles will be present in the game.
Cop Doctor Vanilla Town Vanilla Town Vanilla Town Mafia Goon Mafia Goon
Role PMs look like this (no colors).
Subject: Idiot Role
Welcome to Idiot Mafia. You are a Cop/Vanilla Town/Doctor/Mafia Goon
If it isn't obvious, Cops can investigate someone's alignment every night. There are no sanities. Doctors can protect one person from hit every night. The doctor cannot protect himself.
The game starts at night 0. The doctor CAN NOT act during night 0.
Days last until a strict majority vote to lynch someone (or no lynch), at which point the day ends immediately. Artanis and I will try to post votecounts regularly, but once a majority vote is cast, the day ends. If no majority is reached before 48 hours, the day will end in a no lynch. You cannot unvote after the lynch has been hammered, and please stop talking even if the hosts are not around. Night will be 24 hours from the nightpost.
There are minimal notifications this game. Neither the doctor, nor his target will be notified of a save.
Extras This is about as vanilla setup as this format gets. However, my intentions are to pop one of these up every few games (depending on the queue speed, this will be every few weeks or every few months), with additions depending on the outcome of the previous game. For instance, if mafia wins, next game might have the doctor able to act on night 0. And if town then wins the one afterwards, then perhaps the doctor will be a jailor instead. Who knows. We'll see.
Errata Doctors cannot protect themselves. Minimal notifications in this game.

This is not a newbie game. While new players are welcome, there is no coaching available. IIRC, [M][N] is for mini normal; newbie games are [M][N][W] mini normal newbie. So no issue. To confirm, variable day = deadline will move; day ends with hammer and next deadline based on nightpost timestamp? What is the planned initial starting time/deadline? Thanks. You're right, and I was right before I second guessed the meaning of N.
Because it's a small game, I hope to start by December 1, but I don't know how long signups will take: it will start when it's full.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I was asking about the time of day that you intend to use as your start time -- which will dictate the deadlines for at least the first N+D cycle. Yes, I am aware that the time could subsequently shift due to instant majority lynch mechanics -- it's just that I have reduced availability this upcoming Fri/Sat and just wanted to see if I can safely and responsibly sign in now, or if I should hold off. I don't see any rules prohibiting the doc from protecting themselves, or protecting the same target consecutive nights. Please clarify if allowed to do so. We'll start N0 at 22:00 GMT (+00:00).
Doctor can repeat his heal. He can't heal himself.

So can I count you as an /in? :D

Excellent! Just 2 more and the game can start I don't like weekend starts, so tentative start date: Monday, Dec. 5 at 23:00 CET. Just need 2 people to sign up before then!

Night 0
It had been a good day in Liquiville. Acrofales, the town jailor had one of the town’s few criminals locked behind bars. But as he sat back and kicked his feet up, a car pulled up outside. Artanis[Xp], the Godfather and his goon stormed in, while Acrofales reached for his gun. Too late. Artanis[Xp] smashed his face in with a baseball bat. They unlocked the jail and set their buddy free. Gangsters being gangsters, Artanis[Xp] was later thanked for his efforts with a bullet in the back. As night settles, Liquiville has to come to grips with a new kingpin.
Acrofales, the jailor was brutally bludgeoned to death. Artanis[Xp], the godfather was shot in the back. And then in the head. Just for good measure.
It is now Night 0. You may talk, and in fact, are encouraged to do so. Action deadline is in .
|
Day 1
The new gang of Liquiville set to work immediately. They robbed the drug store, the bank and the bar, just to show who’s boss in town.
Miraculously, nobody was hurt. Except Koshi, who was brutally decapitated and his head was put on a stake in the village square.
Koshi, the town doctor has died.
It is now Day 1. The day will end instantly when a majority is reached. You may vote for a player by typing ##vote: Qatol in this thread. You may also vote for no lynch (by typing ##vote: no lynch). If no consensus is reached in , the day will end without a lynch.
|
votecount No lynch (1): Hopeless1der, cakepie Tumblewood (1): cakepie, Chairman Ray, Hopeless1der
Not voting (4): ExO_, NeverUnlucky, Tumblewood, Chairman Ray

Night 1
Nothing much happened today. Angry mobs roamed the streets, but couldn’t quite figure out who to blame for this travesty.
Day 1 has ended with no lynch.
It is now Night 1. You may talk, and in fact, are encouraged to do so. Action deadline is in .
|
Day 2
Hopeless1der, vanilla townie has died.
It is now Day 2. The day will end instantly when a majority is reached. You may vote for a player by typing ##vote: Qatol in this thread. You may also vote for no lynch (by typing ##vote: no lynch). If no consensus is reached in , the day will end without a lynch.
|
votecount Chairman Ray (1): Tumblewood, NeverUnlucky Tumblewood (1): NeverUnlucky, Chairman Ray
Not voting (3): ExO_, NeverUnlucky, cakepie
With 5 alive, it takes 3 votes to lynch. If no majority is reached, the day ends in with no lynch

Ok, so that happened. Well played scum! CR just well enough to convince a townie, and that's all that was needed. And NU well enough to convince all townies
Honestly, though, this game deserves some post-mortem! There was a moment when TW and NU were on CR, and I mentioned to Artanis that CR should just hammer himself and stop town's chance for thinking out the game. But instead scum decided NU should unvote and they went with CR as a countercopclaim gambit. And then town chewed themselves up, because nobody considered for a second that NU was scum.
@ExO_: you blame cakepie for that, but not for a second did you consider the possibility that NU was scum. And you were one of the two players in an amazing place to realize that it should be possible. Cakepie was posting pages and pages of analysis, but hadn't voted. Why would a scum, trying to convince the final remaining townie, not vote and hope that townie hammers? Instead, cakepie was trying to convince with words, but was really hesitant to vote. That was a real clue there that nobody picked up on. And both TW and ExO_ were in position to figure this out, because they knew they were townies themselves (and ExO_ had already figured out that if he was voting for a townie then they would already have been hammered and GG), whereas cakepie was convinced that TW and ExO_ were the scumteam and teamed up to vote for town!CR. Of course, credit goes to NU as well here, who played amazingly as the confused townie dragging his feet.
As for claims: cakepie already realized he shouldn't have fakeclaimed as a VT, and this game is a pretty harsh setup that really really punishes town fakeclaiming (although he would've baited scum into shooting him if he had done it about 5 minutes earlier, and that would have been good). However, it was still unnecessary, because scum was running after H1der's fake bluetells.
Other than that, town got a bit unlucky that the medic got shot on N0.
I promise the roles were 100% random.
Town mvp: nobody, but an honorable mention to cakepie for the huge efforts. Scum mvp: NU

I firstly want to say that I still feel that while cakepie placed the town vote that ended the game, the blame is not all on him. Town seemed disfunctional, and it was not really due to anything scum did, they just coasted along while town tore itself apart (a pretty normal scum victory). Both TW and ExO_ just read cakepie as scum and stopped listening to anything he said, and what he said made quite a lot of sense, even though it was all wrong
I also want to comment on the wall of text bit (re: #591), but for that it needs to be clear that I think that NU hammering earlier on would have been the safer play to ensure a CP mislynch on D3. It's easy to say as a "what-if", because it would also give CP an extra night and day to convince ExO_ he was town, but decisively hammering scum is a pretty powerful "town" play. As I said before, I actually thought CR should have trololol hammered himself right at the start, denying town all that time to think.
As it is, scum was pretty all-in on CP not realizing his mistake. If ExO_ or TW had been able to convince CP, then CP would have had the benefit of hammering the scum and NU would have looked really suspect for being on the fence for so very very long. And that brings me to the main point I want to make, which is in response to #591 (yeah, I'm longwinded ). You clearly realized that CR was doing very little to defend himself. There was some token effort, but a scum with a red check on him knows he's burned. And more importantly, his teammate knows so too. It is very uncommon for a scum to go 100% all-in hard defense on his scumbuddy, because unlike townies: they know they are wrong, and they also know that if their defense fails, and the flip happens, they will look completely awful. Whereas a townie in lylo will do everything he possibly can, including posting more than the rest of the players combined to try to convince the rest of town. And, moreover, if CP had been scum, he really should have voted.
In hindsight it is easy to see this (as it is from a hosting point of view), and it is far harder when in the heat of the game, and you're in your tunnel, having "solved" the game. However, that is also when it is most important to realize these aspects.
And some self-congratulations here: this type of micro game setup is a great setting for hammering home such hard lessons. Lylo in bigger games come with far more baggage, making it harder to analyze, whereas the *optimal* play for both scum and town are quite obvious here (from the outside), and the trick is to distance yourself enough from the game while playing it to recognize those plays. In the heat of the game, it is very hard for TW or ExO_ to figure out who CR´s scumbuddy is, and the cases on cakepie made a lot of sense: fakeclaimed cop, was hard defending someone they knew to be scum, pretty much textbook evil mafia plays. But stepping back and looking at the big picture, cakepie was quite obviously town. And that made NU the obvious scum. With that realization, I think either one could have convinced cakepie.
Finally, a bit about the cop claim. Given that the doctor died, the very last moment of N1 is the right time to claim (with the medic alive, you can claim at the start of N1, or even earlier if you got a red check). And between TW making a case against a green check and claiming too late (after he could have died), his cop claim was off to a rocky start. Even so, his cop claim made miles and miles and miles more sense than CR's. It was clear, explained, and very obviously coming from a cop. CR's was half-baked and thrown together as a reaction to the actual cop claim (scum thought CP was the cop and they were still in the clear). If anybody should have been confused, it's ExO_, because he had to deal with CP's fakeclaim. Unfortunately, CP was too tunneled on TW *having to be scum* to recognize the truth.
And let this be a warning to townies NOT to get stuck in a tunnel. Incidentally, I learned this the hard way too, getting into a really big figh with marvellosity, being completely convinced he was scum (and he was obviously town, to see the game, clicky: be warned, it had weird mechanics and lots of hydras). Artanis was the host in that game too, shall we blame him? Luckily for town, we won the game anyway, but it was still a pretty shitty experience while playing the game, so I totally understood cakepie's agony. Unfortunately as a host, there is very little one can do: the players need to play the game, and there was only one point where things threatened to cross a line, but you guys self-corrected. I'm just glad cakepie is now feeling better and we didn't make a big mistake not modkilling him when he requested it.

Cakepie asked me to have this thread locked, so that should happen soon. He's writing a blog about this game. I'll put a link to that in the OP when it's done.
