The TSL Ladder is now over. Check out the TSL Top 48 Qualifier Groups, where you can find where your favorite player finished and who he's scheduled to play in the TSL Round of 48.
While most players and fans experienced the excitement and stress of the final 24 hour TSL Ladder sprint, one player wasn't worried at all, playing barely any games in the final few days. TSL Ladder #1 IdrA[Media] will play a Bo5 match with NonY on January 9th. The winner earns a seed into the PokerStrategy.com TSL, and the loser drops down to Qualifier Group A to play either LRM)KenZy, mTw.HoRRoR, or iF.NeMu.
Interview with IdrA[Media]
Congratulations, you secured first place. Did you ever doubt this would happen?
No. When I wanted to newb bash I played against the A- koreans that everyone else was dodging, so as long as I had enough time to play there was no way I wouldn't get first.
So you weren't worried at all when MorroW made his late run?
I was online for the last hour or so, if he had won the second game vs G5 I would have played another game to secure my spot. Obviously its possible I could've lost but he still would have been a game behind and its far, far more likely that he would've lost. Also he was gaining like 50 points a game so his odds weren't that good.
You will be battling Nony for a direct seed in to the TSL. How hard do you think it will be to face him if he's well prepared?
He's the kind of player who really suffers from inactivity, since his biggest strengths are his mechanics, which you lose without practice, and his very well designed build orders, many of which are now obsolete, so I think it will be pretty hard for him to get back into top shape in time for our match. Also he tends to play a very straight up style, and I can't remember the last time I lost to a foreigner who doesn't have invincible units in a management game.
What was fun or memorable about the TSL Ladder this time?
Laughing at all the abusers. Not the cheaters, but the people like Morrow and Kwark. That was quite fun. As a player the only game that really stands out is one of my teammates smurfed me and I was beating him until I found out the 6 o'clock expansion could be nuked from inside his main on match point. That kinda sucked.
You played a teammate!? ABUSE!!!! Can you tell us more about that game?
Well I lost to him so it'd be even more retarded than F91's abuse. It was a TvT on matchpoint, he opened 2 fac no addon I opened fac cc and blocked it pretty cleanly. It turned into a generic macro game with me having a bit of an advantage, both securing half map, and then he nuked my expansion at 6, and as he was aware of that trick and I wasn't his tanks were positioned to block / take advantage of it on the 12/6 expos, so there wasn't really much I could do from that point. He was just a semi-pro who lives in the team house, no one famous.
Speaking of abusers, many of the players who are considered your toughest competition were disqualified. Are you disappointed you won't have a chance to play them, or are you happy that your road to the finals is easier?
I'm sad I wont get to play F91. I didn't view the others as too much of a threat but the people talking about liquibition is getting kind of old, I would've liked the chance to put an end to them. I don't think the tournament got that much easier for me, personally, I always viewed Ret, White-Ra, and maybe Draco or JF if they get in shape, as the biggest threats.
There was an infamous game that took place during the ladder between you and Ret. Can you tell us what happened there?
He went fake spire, I saw it but only after 4 or 5 turrets had completed. I cut scvs to timing rush him, since the problem with not making mutas is they can't really control when you push, but he flipped a coin and droned/teched off of 5 lurkers, meaning I could've killed him easily if I had recognized it. Sadly I waited for my first vessel to move out, since he has a tendency to mass lair units and it's better to have a stronger, later push vs that. So he had a defiler out to stop me and I had a Strelok scv count at that point, so I just tried to allin him. And allining vs invincible units doesn't work out too well.
You famously ended the game with the line "you won without doing a single thing" which has quickly spread as an internal TL.net meme. The same thing happened with the phrase "a useful talent toi have." Are you planning your next coined phrase carefully?
I think I might help "u gotta skate" on its rise to greatness. But really it doesn't matter much what I say, just about any comment I make seems to catch on.
If someone never watched you play before, how would you describe your style to them? How would you explain your "strong personality?"
My play style is alot more varied than most people give me credit for. I play in whatever way I think will give me the greatest chance to win a match. My management game, my production and control and overall execution, is much better than any other foreigners. This means that I almost always play a passive, defensive game to try to force a style of game where my strengths kick in, something long and multi-tasking based. So most people think that's all I do, but if you look at, for example, the nostalgia series vs White-Ra. Nostalgia is a near impossible map TvP, so my best chance at winning was doing something gay and tricky, so thats what I did. As for my personality, I get angry when I lose, and those comments are just frustration, but as for stuff from interviews and whatnot, mainly alot of people lose their sense of humor and recognition of sarcasm when they get on the internet.
It seems your personality has polarized people largely into three groups: 1) people who hate everything about you, 2) people that support your success but are disappointed when you act bad mannered, and 3) people that love to hear you call people newbies. If you could say something to each group what would it be?
1) Europeans are far too touchy. Life is much more enjoyable if you relax a bit. 2) Its a start, but you need to learn to embrace the anger. 3) Judging by the TL Poll theres actually alot more of you than I expected, so I'll keep it up. I can't believe I'm above White-Ra in that.
People like a good villain. Do you like this role? If you could start it over, would you rather be someone who is known for being nice to his opponents?
Well like I said some of the comments after games are out of frustration and there are some players who I have no desire to disrespect, but I have never wanted to put on a politically correct public persona. It would be far more boring for the fans and I would personally hate it. Given the way certain people react to that I think the villain thing was somewhat unavoidable. And I'd like to point out that it is indeed a public persona. 99% of the top foreigners bitch and moan and flame after losses. They just hide it in public. It takes a ridiculously competitive nature to succeed at something like this, and that kind of personality does not cope well with losing.
Is it like this ever with your CJ practice partners? Or do you just stifle the comments? Is it hard to live in such a hierarchical structure with your personality?
Well one particular zerg player on the team never ever gg's if I beat him with a vulture runby or something else gay. No one takes it seriously and there have been plenty of games where we (some Terran players) sit and make fun of one of our abusive little Protosses because he "only dirty build user" and whatnot. But no I don't sit there telling them they're cheesy newbies, part from respect and part self preservation. It's all in good fun. Players don't take themselves nearly as seriously as the fans do, for the most part. (foreign fans, I don't really know about Korean fans)
Do your teammates know about TSL? Will they help you practice? If you win some money out of this tournament, are you going to take them out to dinner?
They dont know about it. I haven't mentioned it to them yet since its in the early stages. If I ask them they'll help me practice, but I'll probably only use them if I play Ret, maybe Draco. After I won ESWC they said I had to buy them pizza for dinner. For the most part after foreign tournaments they'll just ask where I placed, how much I won, and then say "oh good" and grin and thats about the end of it. And sometimes they'll ask who I lost to and then giggle when I say a 14 year old Zerg user from Germany.
So it sounds like after a while you earned some respect over there from your CJ teammates. Do you notice a change in how they react to you since when you first started?
Well they expected amd understood that I sucked at first, so it's not like they really looked down on me for it, and I've progressed steadily since then, which is about all you can expect. So respect hasn't change all that much, but the way I interact with the team professionally definitely has. For instance, one of our B team terrans has a TvP on Match Point coming up and he was having trouble with the map, so he messaged me and asked me to play against the guy he was practicing with, so he could see how I approached it and see if that would help him. Something like that wouldn't have happened before.
Are you still close with your Media clan mates? Were you particularly disappointed when any of them failed to qualify?
Ya I'm still very close with all of them, given that 3 of them are out here in Korea with me and Skew is basically my deranged clone. Me and G5 were the only active players who participated and we both qualified. Artosis and Tasteless played, but they're both busy with other stuff and don't have the time to really be competitive players anymore. So we did about as well could be expected of us. Media B, however... very disappoint.
Have you had a chance to look at the TSL Ro48 Groups? What are your thoughts?
I looked over them a bit. Morrow actually had a pretty good chance of advancing, which I find hilarious. I remember Nyoken's group striking me as very hard. G5's too, obviously. Any group with Ret's gonna be pretty difficult, especially for a Protoss. Unless you lag of course, then it'll be really easy.
Any last words about funny moments from the TSL Ladder that you'd like to share?
The ladder was pretty run of the mill since I didnt play many foreigners. I know I left a few TvP's with PROTOSS!! so im sure the demotivational poster guys will have a field day once my reppack gets out. The Octzerg game is already in circulation, I'm quite proud of that one. Other than that not too much worth noting.
Well, I'll let you get back to it. Congratulations again on your #1 finish and good luck with practice.
Thanks.

nice. i think you need to follow your heart when it comes to flaming your teammates though, they're cramping your style and it can't be healthy! also, did you get to play with iris when he went to b-team?
LOL strelok scv count Say what you want but Idra's a pretty funny guy, I like his dry humour. Will be so interesting to see if anyone can take him down
IdrA always has great interviews and this time wasn't any different. I'm surprised to see him following his fans like in the poll. I guess his anti-social stuff is all for shits and giggles.
im one of those fans in the 2nd group. I don't really like the stuff he says when he losses like doing newbie shit or w/e but when he wins and says something funny like that game with octzerg, then I find it pretty funny.

I hardly think it's an insult when idra says that someone is playing all their games straight up.
Great interview! Definitely my favourite player to watch in the foreign scene. A compilation video which features Idra's best BM quotes should be put together, a little drama is healhty to keep the scene interesting!
Group One reporting in. Dont really get what being arrogant and whiney has to do with competition and anger. Thats like calling a laughing stock a villant .... oh wait that just happend ^^
I know it's retarded but I can't stop giggling at those motivational posters featuring Idra. Hilarious stuff is a good skill toi have
I like how Idras cockiness is finally starting to match his skill level, which makes his boasting and playful arrogance not that retarded anymore. This is why people respect him more now too

Signed.
Calling him an immature nerd kid used to be valid IMHO (in reference to some old comments of him). Nowadays - if you don't like him - he at least is a respectable SC player. He follows his dream and works hard for it. That's more than most people out there can say of themselves.
I wish more people could get to meet Greg personally. He's a strangely humble person when you meet him and then he's the villain online. It's understandable losing is hard on me and I'm just a D+ newbie. I can only imagine being A+ and losing a game to anyone especially if they cheat and use invincible units.
Great Interview, I love Idra's talk and I hope he can get to A team on CJ eventually, I think hes got the potential and if he keeps the steady skill increase that he's been showing he'll eventually get it! Then we get to see Idra on TV yay!
Well, I have to say that this TSL is being run really really well. Congratulations to all these guys bringing the hype, organising and sifting through the games looking for foul play! As for Idra : lol, that was an ironic lol btw, "life is more enjoyable if you relax a bit"?? Really? Are you giving us personality advice? Now THAT is motherfucking funny..

i give him credit for the fact that he is now ready to admit that he acts out of frustration but it's like he spent 1.5 years in korea just to become the "BM with a reason"-guy
2) Its a start, but you need to learn to embrace the anger.
Hahaha, very funny ^^
It's weird to hear that he's mostly been playing against Koreans on the ladder. Everyone knows Koreans and foreigners have different styles, so I think this may affect him more than he thinks. Still, I liked the interview and I give him some respect for making it interesting.

Everytime I read Idra's interview I just feel pity. He's been in Korea for 1.5 years practicing StarCraft 12 hours a day, has accomplished nothing versus his peers, but claims to have better mechanics than foreigners. Congratulations I guess. You still somehow manage to lose to them in a standard game (Koll WCG).

Yeah but Boxer has 100% win rate against foreigners, right? There's lots of even A-teamers who could lose against a top foreigner every now and then

When Idra says he plays more than just the boring straight up style, he probably doesn't mean he often does BBS or proxy facts. It's just not so obvious when a Terran cuts SCVs and goes for an all-in, since it sometimes looks like bad macro. After all, style isn't just what build you open with, or whether you get nukes or lockdown.

he's trolling
"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages ... with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." I didn't do anything of the sort. This was a good interview and I was impressed by it so I mentioned it within a larger context. After that I responded to a part of the interview and meant what I said. Also you suck.
Am I the only one interested how his actual progress is going in CJ house? All we got is that he has respect and newblings comes and asks for help etc. I want statistics and actual bragging! I want to hear Idra say he stomped Savior and owned Iris with only ghosts etc. Give us some information Dirty Harry! I demand it !

He does very obvious shit as well. Against White-Ra in that Nostalgia thingy he went for Deep 6. :D
In my opinion, 50% of all IdrA BM is due to the fact he doesn't give a shit, and 50% is just because he's roleplaying a character. He doesn't really mean what he says - he just wants to make people laugh and make himself look interesting in the eyes of the community.
He kinda impersonated the "villain". He knows he's playing Starcraft at a different level compared to foreigners, and went along with it.
That's not completly bad. I keep thinking that if I were a progamer I would pull insane cerimonies and to a point, "roleplay a character" too.
Although I find his playstyle kinda boring, I want to see him playing more and more - particulary if he's losing - so we can get some top notch e-sports drama and epic BM'ing.

I really enjoyed this interview. Very concise answers to appropriate questions. Something I've found with IdrA is that sometimes he says something and you say "omg he's so bm why would he say that?" and it usually turns out that he's right. u gotta skate
I think IdrA is by far the most exiting foreign player out there. He's simply genius. Why you may ask, well, let me put it like this:
It's really awarding being a "fan" of his, because when he manage to win - hopefully you have witness the epic and the player that you're cheering for won (doh)..
But now for the brilliant thing about IdrA... Whenever he in fact loose a game - he hopefully made a hilarious comment before he left, which for me is equally satisfying if not more.
So it's a win-win situation, so how could you hate on this guy? I don't know and - I'm an European.
Idra is very arrogant but is very strong to. He can talk like that. And is no lies that hi plays in Korea with the bests of the bests and hi streng grow.

Seriously? I mean he does come off as a very witty guy indeed but he also seems the type to be a dick behind one's back. You know, the type that will mock you (not directly but with a whisper to his neighboring persons) for asking a question he knows the answer to, or because your jeans are out of fashion or some other trivial shit. Idk, he does have that superiority complex persona to him.
Nice interview and GL anyway Idra, still would be embarrassing not to finish in a podium position.

Dude, I honestly cant imagine anyone who is hyper competitive [and thus a top player in the foreign or kor scene] without having a narcissistic tendency.
This was a great interview, and I definitely am glad Idra responded so honestly. Much better reading than the dry, typical interview: "I respect all my peers, am just glad to be here, etc."
With that said, should Idra do a better job backing up his talk? Has Idra won anything yet?
Also, I haven't heard any comments from him about his WCG losses to Koll. I would've loved to read more about how he lost, why he lost, etc.

KAY, im step in here cause thats been said a lot [by touchy europeans]. Idra cant help if he gets angry over losing a game, its a flash moment response. Hes completely chill with the people afterwards, however. He doesn't hold grudges, he doesn't wake up in sweats or tear out his hair. Europeans jumping to attack Idra after a joke or screaming "were not touchy!! we dont need to relax!!!" isnt a flash moment response, its not a response you largely cant help, and you don't come to a softer conclusion after the moment has past. Europeans are too touchy, and ya do need to relax more.

Don't get your panties in a wadadde. Life is much more enjoyable if you relax a bit.
seeing as how he is A+.. and calling A- players "noobs" basically when he described how he was playing versus the players that other TSL players were dodging, I do agree that MAYBE, just MAYBE his BM in the past was well worth it. I like to see good players that BM but still have respect for the game and have a good sense of reality (as im sure he was very careful when responding to these questions but seemed loose), so I'm really starting to gain respect for this guy. Good job Idra, keep it up. Ret, although you're one of my favorites.. you better tighten up your shoelaces
Even though i dont know him in person (most of us dont anyway), he sounds like a pretty cool guy to me ... his BM in game only adds spices to the game, but some tend to take them way too personal ...

People like to think being good mannered actually makes you better than someone who isn't when it's really all in good fun or frustration.

awesome interview... . Very witty and interesting answers by Idra. Imho so much more interesting than the cookie cutter interviews so many other people like to give.
Oh man congratulations Idra, thanks to you the "u gotta skate" meme has completely taken over teamliquid and its livestreams ^^ Damn the man is good at that
Read a few questions and got too disgusted with his arrogance. It's not funny and certainly not befitting on a prepubescent-looking bitter kid who clearly got teased a bit too much in real-life. Hope you lose, and keep failing in Korea.

i was once in your shoes. but with thorough reasoning, i am glad i am out. now rooting for idra and for his BM to pull him higher and higher he has passed the threshold of being renown as a BM foreigner he has passed mistrzzz (the only recollection of a true BM foreigner I can recall) and is A+. you gonna go to a student who got a A+ on a physics exam and say those bad words as if he did not deserve it? maybe your reasoning may be right, maybe they are wrong. regardless, you should respect the game he now brings to the table because if he's the top foreigner, i would shut the (banned) up.

Yeah thats strange why does a wimp hasn`t got a big mouth in RL? maybe he likes to keep his teeth in their place?
or maybe its because hes joking on the internet? comon man just relax and enjoy life a little more hahahah
Or maybe you read the interview again? I don`t really get the connection between flaming someone I dont like and not enjoying life you can chill Iive near the boarder to the netherlands so I maybe relax way too much.

If you are going to spit out mindless hate then at least you know, spill out mindless hate that is actually true?
Speaking of threats, I have to ask this one now - what happened with koll at WCG, and what are your thoughts on that series?
He played better than me that match and deserved to win, but I definitely hope we'll play again in TSL or some other tournament soon.

he's not acting like a prick. he's BEING one. and he has every right to because he fully backs up his reason to be and his motives; what would idra be NOW without his BM past? I honestly can't believe I'd see the day that I defended him.. but seriously, take his advice and relax a bit. yes, it's a computer game. yes, the only thing he can achieve is anything that comes close to boxer.. but god damn, this is a game and it needs some E N T E R T A I N M E N T just as Kobe Bryant will shit on every fan or basketball player that does not like him, he makes it more interesting and has every right to.

Nowadays I've really gotten to like his humor and I believe that he's not entirely serious most of the time. Also, it's he's actually pretty active with the community and clearly cares or at least follows what his fans and other people think about him. It used to be like he was kind of bad before and hence the trashtalking felt out of place but now he actually backs it up and it's a lot more entertaining than if he like never talked about anything or made those funny comments and just said GG every game and was bland and boring.

Sorry, I forgot you can't be entertaining without making yourself look like a complete asshole while being rude and disrespectful to other people, rofl? Is this a joke post? If you are that much of an indoor kid that you can't relate what I'm saying, note BeSt in the MSL group selection. Self-deprecation is far funnier and more entertaining than, whatever it is Idra is supposedly doing to be *entertaining* (yeah right). And why are you comparing Idra, a kid who's lived in Korea for the last 2 years playing computer games and done nothing of note within the actual Korean scene, with Kobe Bryant? How does Idra have any right to talk shit exactly? Are people actually fucking seriously surprised that Idra is doing well in the foreigner scene after living in the eSTRO/CJ houses for however long, competing against people who have real lives outside StarCraft?
As for what would Idra be without his BM past? I don't know, a respected player who non-fanboy foreigners might actually want to see succeed in Korea, instead of feeling embarrassed for the entire non-Korean community perhaps.
For the most part after foreign tournaments they'll just ask where I placed, how much I won, and then say "oh good" and grin and thats about the end of it. And sometimes they'll ask who I lost to and then giggle when I say a 14 year old Zerg user from Germany.

You're saying he doesnt have a life because hes lliving the dream of mostly everyone on Teamliquid and will be payed to play Starcrat?

idra sounds like he jacks off to himself beating foreigners, moving to korea was a really good move for his self esteem, i heard from his classmate in high school that he was the weirdest most awkward nerd

regardless, you should respect the game he now brings to the table because if he's the top foreigner, i would shut the (banned) up.
As in life, being good at something or arbitrary achievements don't give you the right to act like a prick. One day you'll understand this.
he's not acting like a prick. he's BEING one. and he has every right to because he fully backs up his reason to be and his motives; what would idra be NOW without his BM past? I honestly can't believe I'd see the day that I defended him.. but seriously, take his advice and relax a bit. yes, it's a computer game. yes, the only thing he can achieve is anything that comes close to boxer.. but god damn, this is a game and it needs some E N T E R T A I N M E N T just as Kobe Bryant will shit on every fan or basketball player that does not like him, he makes it more interesting and has every right to.
Maybe I don't fully agree on the whole Kobe Bryant part, but Idra has changed. For the better. But still the same guy, just with evidence. :D kthxbye
my conclusion: relax a bit; sometimes you just gotta skate, k?
Sorry, I forgot you can't be entertaining without making yourself look like a complete asshole while being rude and disrespectful to other people, rofl? Is this a joke post? If you are that much of an indoor kid that you can't relate what I'm saying, note BeSt in the MSL group selection. Self-deprecation is far funnier and more entertaining than, whatever it is Idra is supposedly doing to be *entertaining* (yeah right). Is that why your username is that of a progamer?
yeah obviously everyone chooses their sns based on their future goals or wait, this is a sc site.. lulz
its not an issue that idra sucks at sc and will make no impact on the korean scene whatsoever, its that he is the representative of the foreign community, and he's blatantly full of himself and a giant asshole about it. now, sometimes that's okay if it's funny, like FBH laughing when he beat that kid a couple days ago, but this... it's just pathetic

FBH was in a huge slump the whole season, he was smiling because he won a game. Also, FBH is known for his dancing ceremony, like Idra is known for his funny bm. Its entertaining and if you dont find it fun, relax and enjoy life.
