[TSL] Horror, Avi, Nyoken Interviews
January 1st, 2010 22:40 GMT
Interviews with Horror, Avi, and Nyoken
We interviewed a few more TSL Ro48 qualified players about their experience on the TSL Ladder and their thoughts on the upcoming TSL Ro48 Qualifiers. Check out the TSL Top 48 Qualifier Groups, where you can find where your favorite player finished and who he's scheduled to play in the TSL Round of 48.
In the Razer TSL, HoRRoR advanced past Dunaj in the Ro48 but eventually fell in his Ro32 Group, which contained Draco and ClouD. This time, Horror finished #25 in the TSL Ladder, and looks to improve on his previous performance. To do so, he'll have to go through NeMu, KenZy, and most importantly, the loser of NonY vs IdrA.
Interview with mTw.HoRRoRCongratulations on qualifying! Were you confident about making the cut? Thanks. I was suprised how the cut off raised again and again but with 9900 points I was sure that I will make it. Some people might not know you even though you played in the last TSL. Introduce yourself!Ok^^, "hi I'm HoRRoR, I play terran." In the past I was known for some tricky moves like building an off factory in every game and so on but my style changed since 1-2 years. I played in the last 2 WCGs (succeeded in groupstage in 2008, then lost to NonY, lost in groupstage 2009). My favorite progamer is BoxeR and will ever be. I do read TL.net as well as GG.net but I don't post so much. What were your most memorable moments from the ladder?Maybe getting cheesed by Sen or playing a fast 1-0 build without upgrading 1-0 :D. What happened there?I can't remember against whom I played but I wanted to play fast 1-0 bio with a wall but forgot to upgrade the 1-0. Kinda noob mistake I know but happens sometimes. I lost the match. Against Sen, he played some 2hatch allin with fast lurkers and mass speedlings. I didn't recognize it and did not have enough units to defend it, he just overwhelmed me with like 5 lurkers supported by ~24 lings against a wall and a bunker filled with marines. This happens when you are too lazy to scout! In the Razer TSL you were given notice of your match very close to match time because someone dropped out. Are you glad for more practice days this time?Of course. As you mentioned, it gives me extra time to train and prepare for my opponents. Furthermore I think that I'm a bit lucky with my group as long as IdrA beats NonY. NonY is no easy opponent at all but there are better players in the other groups. If I can't beat NonY then I definitly shouldn't be allowed to play in the TSL2 Top16 . Do you feel the other players are treating this TSL differently? Is there a different atmosphere? They definitely treat it differently. It is the biggest tournament for a long time and they also remember the great coverage from the last TSL. This is why they feel the hype for this TSL and they want to do great in it. You can see it by watching at the cut off. Everyone in the Top48 was A- with like 9600 points. If you compare it to the last TSL ladder, it's just amazing. You mentioned how you feel you have a better chance against Nony than Idra, but what about Nemu and Kenzy? How is your TvZ?I played both of them in the ladder stage and I'm pretty confident that I will be able beat them. No one is easy to beat for sure but compared to other players in this TSL, they are the weaker ones. Besides, I'll train as much as possible so my matchups will become better. With this good preparation, I feel that I'll beat them. There are many Germans in the Ro48 and there seems to be good connections between all of them. The key, why we are cheering for each other, is that we are in different groups. No one has to knock a German out to succeed in his group that is very important. I don't speak with GhosTa or Kolll everyday but I also do cheer for all of my countrymen. (Ok, I want iNfeRnaL to lose, but pssst! ). Haha why Infernal?Just to tease him :D. What do you think of the other groups? Who are you cheering for and which ones are the strongest? Which player will surprise everyone with his performance?I think that Group L is the hardest one or maybe Group K. GhosTa and iNfeRnaL will have a hard time. But as I'm cheering for Germany they will beat their opponents! In group A NonY or I will advance, Group B still the German one . Group C: CastrO by lagging his opponents to death. Group D: Strelok. Group E: CloseR, he is the one who will suprise people by beating guys like Drone or White-Ra! Group F: the arrogant Ret ;/. Group G. Fenix. Group H: Tarson. Group I: XiaOzi. Group J: Mondragon. Thanks for the interview, and good luck. Thanks, I hope you guys will enjoy my matches and cheer for me even though NonY is a well known TL user! I wish all of the Germans, especially the mTws, good luck and I hope they'll advance. Keep on the good work TSL admins .
Avi is a lesser known player from Denmark who failed to qualify for the Razer TSL but finished #28 in the TSL Ladder this time. Avi is clanless and is a race picker (Z player but sometimes plays TvZ), and a true dark horse if he qualifies. He also has some very interesting things to say about a few of the other players in this TSL.
Interview with Avi-LoveCongratulations! How confident were you about qualifying?I felt pretty confident through most of the ladder stage, but I still got a bit nervous on the final day - the cutoff was rising quite rapidly. Last time you didn't qualify -- what did you do different this time?I was quite busy during the last TSL, so I never had the time to fully commit; so I guess I simply had more time available to me, it must also be mentioned that having quit WoW for good helped my SC:BW activity loads You are not as well known as some of the other players -- can you introduce yourself?Sure, I'm Avi-Love and I'm from the glorious country of Denmark. I play Zerg although I have been known to play TvZ from time to time, I started playing starcraft back in 99 I think, I eventually quit in order to play mmorpgs (first Everquest, then later on World of Warcraft). I haven't been really active in the foreign community the last few years, my lack of a team/clan means that I haven't played BWCL, WGTour, or ICC and such, which I guess is what makes foreigners "known". I've been browsing TL.net for many years, my first account got banned though, and after that I decided to not post as much. I love watching progaming, always have - I'm a huge fan of Jaedong and Julyzerg! How would you describe your play style?I play pretty straight forward normally, but being an experienced player I have quite a few tricky builds up my sleeve! What does your ID mean?My ID is terrible, I'm really tired of it, basically I had a crush on a girl back in 8th grade called Avi.. and well yeah, 9? years later I'm still haunted by it. Pics please.I don't even have one You are also a coach for CPL now correct?I am indeed. But honestly I've been a bit disappointed with my team's activity, I have only really spoken to and helped one person, but I really like the whole idea of the CPL. Well maybe you need some new students then! I'm sure there are plenty of newbies that would love to be trained by a TSL Top 48 player.I think most are afraid of approaching me, they should feel free to do so if I'm on my CPL account - or they can just pm me on TL.net with any questions/replays they want analyzed, and I'll try to do my best to help with the time I have available! What is your TL account?Well I got my Avi-Love account unbanned by Plexa the other day, I could resume using it I guess. Although to be fair, I did definitely deserve the original ban. You will play two matches in one weekend against Datoby and Kabal, and if you advance, you will play a Bo5 against Strelok. Are you confident?Honestly I think that Strelok is definitely better than me, so I wouldn't say that I'm in anyway confident, but I'll practice and do my best - win or lose, as long as I feel like I performed my best I'll be content. What about the other groups? Who are you cheering for (friends?) and which groups do you think are the toughest? Which player will surprise everyone with his performance?I'm cheering for all the oldschool guys really, in particular I hope that Mondragon and Sen will get far, they are both amazing players. Honestly I think that Group B is the hardest, I'm tired of all the Americans hyping mediocre players such as GosI[Terran]. I don't think there's anyone that will pull huge upsets, most of the players in the top 48 are already somewhat known, and those that aren't won't get further anyway. Do you have any opinions on the TSL drama that unfolded?Well honestly I was surprised that there weren't more people sharing their negative opinions about MorroW, seeing his interview and people going "Yeah Morrow, you're awesome I'm your fan now" felt quite sickening to me personally. The biggest issue isn't that he dodged or cheesed during the TSL ladder to get where he is, it's his attitude and having to deal with the way he acts. I'll happily share an example - back when I had to play him in the ESL qualifiers, (early in the tournament) he joined the game, then left saying it was the incorrect map four times. Upon consulting the admin, he was told that it was indeed the correct map, and agreed to play. After losing, he thought it'd be a good time to go afk and "study" the replay of the game while I was sitting in the channel waiting. I've seen and heard of him doing this crap even when he wins games, I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been. I think that when you treat people poorly you get treated poorly in return, unfortunately the majority of people following events never participate in them, so they don't really understand. It's a bit like the drama in the MistrZZZ stream thread. People aren't really considering how annoying it is to play against people such as him. You spoke about unfounded "American hype." Artosis and Idra have very strong opinions about players.Honestly I like Artosis and thoroughly enjoy all the work he's putting into the foreign scene, but I think they tend to hype their friends when it's completely ridiculous. Before WCG they were all going on and on about how GosI[Terran] would surprise everyone - only to see him get slaughtered in the group stage. Then afterwards, they began hyping iNkA as some sort of resurrected Jesus. And despite playing 300+ games, he still failed to qualify for the TSL while players like Gamtja succeeded. I think that says a fair bit. Thanks for the interview and good luck. Any last words to the TL users?I hope you guys appreciate the hard effort put forward by the people at TL.net and PokerStrategy, without them we wouldn't have a TSL2!
Nyoken is a true old school American Terran player who once represented the United States at WCG Grand Finals. But if you were not around back then, you may not have heard of him. Nyoken finished #31, but his Ro48 first opponent is Dreiven, someone Nyoken admits he has never beaten before.
Interview with EG.NyokenCongratulations! Were you ever worried you wouldn't qualify?I was worried on the last day because the points had gone up about 300 since I had gone to bed. I almost started playing but I decided not to since I figured even if I went to bottom 40s that I was still quite a bit ahead of 50s-60s and would safely qualify. Good decision. Several players like ALF and Lzgamer were in the mid 9000s and continued to play, only to drop and fall out of the Top 48. What was your reaction when you found out you qualified?I was obviously really happy to qualify. I was disappointed that LzGamer didn't qualify because we had been talking on vent whether he should play or not. I think the whole vent channel decided that his points were maybe borderline to qualify, which was true had there been no disqualifications, but unfortunately that was a bad decision and he ended up 49th. Last time you did not qualify -- what was different this time? The first TSL I was in my phase where I wasn't playing Starcraft. Every few months I end up going inactive by playing a different game such as Lineage II, poker, or most recently it was League of Legends. This time around I made sure I wasn't going to miss out on TSL since the prize pool was so big. I think in the past year I've improved a lot so that's why I was able to qualify. Many old school players will recognize your name, but for newer fans and players, who are you?My name is Daniel. I'm a Terran player and I've been playing seriously since Game-i which is I think 2000? That's when I changed to be a serious 1v1 player rather than a public 2v2 players. I used to be a Zerg player but changed at the 1.08 patch because it hit Zerg hard. My favorite player back then was Boxer because his micro was so good. Nowadays it's Jaedong because his multitask is amazing. I've been a WCG USA finalist since 2003 and made it to Grand Finals once where I didn't make it out of groups. That's about it. How would you describe your style and your strengths and weaknesses?Well, as everyone knows strategies since 2000 or even as late as 2005 have changed a ton. It's almost suicide to 1 base versus Zerg or use something like a 6 factory push versus Protoss. In general I would characterize my play as aggressive but micro-oriented in TvZ and TvT, and I've been trying to become more Flash-like in TvP. My strength is micro and my weakness is macro. Are you close with the other American players?Yes, I am close with just about everyone. I talk with the other EG players on ventrilo nearly everyday and also Artosis when he occasionally signs in. I am also good friends with people that have quit such as Skew. American Terrans also have a reputation of being very combustible when they lose. Are you like that?I don't get mad when I lose. I do get mad when I play poorly or when people don't give a rematch. What do you think about your group and your chances to advance? For qualifying, I hate my group. I've never beaten Dreiven on PGT, iCCup or WGT clan league. Fenix is also very good with protoss and that's my weakest match up. However, I have modernized and gotten a lot better at TvP by watching people like Flash and Fantasy. I hope to prove, at least to myself, that my TvP actually has become a lot better by at least making it to the finals against Fenix. What about the other groups? Who are you rooting for to advance? Who do you think will surprise everyone?I've looked at the other groups but don't really remember them that much. I want Ret and IdrA to advance because I think they are the highest skilled and would have a really good series wherever they meet (hopefully the finals). I would say KiLLeR will be the biggest surprise. I played him on ICCup and he is very good. I remember someone mentioning that Killer had beat White-Ra 4-1 or something that. So I would say look for Killer to snipe some big names. Thanks and good luck. Any last words for TL or the fans?A lot of you don't know me as I am pretty private about Starcraft. I hope after this tournament you will know me a lot better. I hope this tournament works out well for Teamliquid so we can see more in the future.
There will be many more interviews with the other TSL Top 48 qualifiers soon. Until then, enjoy the replay packs that have been released by the players, and discuss the TSL Qualifier Groups with other fans.

Great interviews! Didn't know anything about avi-love beyond his name.. I still think the whole Morrow-dodging-thing is more funny than disgusting.. If Morrow gets crushed it'll be even funnier imo.
|
Avi-love is awsome.
If you have some time, maybe you can train me instead of those noobs on your CPL team
|
Wow from now on i love AVI-Love!! I had no idea who he was before but now i do and he is sweet! loved that interview the most.

No he's not. Americans (from the US) don't consider Mexicans "Americans" even though they're technically on the American continent.
Calling Mexicans, Canadians, and South Americans "Americans" is a European thing.

Nyoken I bereeve ~

I love the tension between Morrow and Avi. Will be interesting to see all these players fight it out in ro48!!

Avi's interview was the most interesting so far =) ... thanks!
|
Great interviews :D "CastrO by lagging his opponents to death" Haha
|
Denmark hwaiting!!! Go Avi!

+ Show Spoiler +avi maybe u didnt know rules of esl qualifer tournament but we were allowed to take up to 10 minutes or something like that to go to toilet etc i used that time to watch the replay i very very often do this in events where i wanna see something about the replay that can help me the next time, u learn alot so to call it "attitude problem" to follow and use that time gap rule to my advantage is pretty stupid
and ur openly lying when saying i thought it was wrong map 4 times, it was wrong map 4 times and at end u choose correct map-.-
else ontopic, nice interviews i hope u can interview a few more before it begins )
|
Go Avi <3
edit : oh Morrow vs Avi grudge match pls ! lol
|
Morrow please, you're a complete moron and you're trying to lie here; I did NOT the host incorrect map, you were just being stupid (this is a trend with you though)
And saying because you're entitled to have a break between games you should do it? So you'd show up 19 minutes late to cw's when the w/o is 20 minutes, it's all mannered because it's in the rules right? Common courtesey, if you want to watch the replays do it after the series, don't waste you opponents time, not like it helped you anyway.

Extremely immature. Please learn to type like someone who finished elementary school and stop using racist remarks. You're giving Swedish people a bad name.
Nice interviews btw.
I think that the "hype" about players like Terran and Koll is not about them being the best right now but just showing a huge potential. Being good at basics like mechanics doesn't really get you up there with people who are incredibly experienced but it sets you up for a great future. Mechanics is the hardest part of starcraft. Anyone that excells at it can learn strategy and get experience and thus improve alot faster than people who have mediocre mechanics. That's my opinion of the matter anyway.
|
Haha,I really like avi-love after that Interview.
Avi-love fighting!
|
Gogo, Avi-Love :D Totally agree on the hyping and the example of MorroW as well as his respond points to rather bad manners, in my opinion. This is despite me being a regular MorroW defender
Nevertheless, Mathias, you've never looked as beautiful as you do tonight <3 (but that's just cause you're not wearing any underwear)

Sorry to tell you, even tho I don't care about you because I don't even know who you are, that you apparently don't know nothing about what you talking about. Yes, he did beat Ra and were more than 4 games during the ladder process.
Anyways, I hopefully won't miss a single match of any group. I think every player qualified are strong enough to upset in any circunstances, so I'm really happy about all this tourney will give

i know that swedes and danes hate each other... i think it's some historical rivalry being occupied from one another in different times

No, I'm pretty sure he is just being a dick. ^^
Denmark vs. Sweden grudge match woudn't be much fun. Avi is pretty much the only somewhat known dane still playing bw, while there are soo many good swedes,
Poster above: Lol, we don't hate each other. There are various jokes making fun of the other nation and a history of wars and rivalry in sports, but that can be said about most neighbouring contries. If anything our nations support each other.

Now I wish for a Ro8 battle between Morrow and Avi-Love
But the brackets for Ro16 and Ro8 aren't known yet or should they be obvious?

Wouldn't call a rivalry a form of hate per se. But that's just retorics.
The youtube video you found is from "Riget" by Lars von Trier, the Danish director (also known from Dancer in the Dark, Antichrist etc). The swede in that part is a very humorous character having a hard time coping with his Danish colleagues and their different ways. It's comical.

... to bring out the anti-american sentiment, that is!
Great interviews! Lovin' the drama! GO IDRA!
... and one last thing for the record, Artosis does a phenominal job of hyping ALL international StarCraft!

It's not like morrow is purposely hugely egotistical and arrogant, he just often acts immature under the cover of ^^ faces. I mean when you play someone and they say things like "^^ that micro was good wasn't it?" it's not rude or anything, it's just child-like and annoying.
Like when he left MB, he decided to do it suddenly about 15 minutes before an important clan war. He made a big fuss about changing tags and leaving the clan. It wasn't like he needed to quickly join his new team, he just wanted to see how much the team relied on him to feed his ego.

I respect all TSL players, including morrow, but you obviously haven't seen morrow's game vs xiaoxi. Morrow left under the 2 min mark after having his BBS allin scouted.

Like when he left MB, he decided to do it suddenly about 15 minutes before an important clan war. He made a big fuss about changing tags and leaving the clan. It wasn't like he needed to quickly join his new team, he just wanted to see how much the team relied on him to feed his ego. That is kinda arrogant and egoistic though.. Something here doesn't add up..

The swede in that part is a very humorous character having a hard time coping with his Danish colleagues and their different ways. It's comical. In Danish it may be Riget, but in the rest of the world it's called The Kingdom. I honestly think that this series is wittier and funnier than Twin Peaks!

nytefish u dont have proof why i left mb 15 min before a cw, it was so long time that i dont even remember why. but i can tell u i didnt leave mb to see how much u needed me to boost my ego, i left mb because i wanted to become a competitive gamer and mb was only playing for fun. just because a guy like nytefish says something like this doesnt make it true, this is just his side of the story just like avi-love in this interview. this is why ppl who never met me think im bm because they listen to ur stupid stories that arent fully true... and stuff like that i didnt really say exactly like that nytefish, ever since i joined mb u always been towards me for different reasons while i been very good friends and still is with various members from mb. there are ppl who dont realize that avi just called me a complete moron and as response i insulted his country. but some ppl all they see is me insulting his country for no reason. u need to check more carefully when ppl start arguing and see who really started and why they say the things they do before u pick a side. same was when i played against avi-love in esl, i wasnt bm at all i just said he pick wrong map while he is bming me hard. same was in esl when i was against mondragon where infernal and mondy and those guys called me retarded and shit really much while i didnt say a thing to them. i just asked infernal to leave because he didnt have ally chat on in the middle of the game. and against mistrez he used to bm me every single game we played while i did nothing towards me, hell, a game on tau cross 10 min into the game he insulted me while i typed absolutely nothing but "gl hf" and at end "gg" when i won. i get 10 times more shit than i give back, its ppl like these who spread these bad words about me for w/e reasons that make me sick. ruining my reputation behind my back when i have done nothing towards them

it was in the end of the tsl ladder where every second was needed to play and win fast, after xiaozi i said gg and left the game before 2 min mark. he went to report and made a mistake saying i was +2 ranks than him when we were same ranks. so not only got a punished pts for leaving before 2 min mark, i also got a shitload of pts loss cuse xiaozi reported the game incorrectly, he apologized to me and i said sorry to him in lobby after game and explained that the time was short and he can go report if he want. then later on i said on tl ladder standings that there was a report needed to be made and i said this all for xiaozi. so you call me bm? i dont see where i was bm in this situation, how much intel did u have before u made ur post?
now i am sick of sitting here and defending myself for things that i didnt do, when someone tells u something, ask for evidence instead of believing him...
i say gg after every single game i play, i say gl gg before the game i never pick race in countdown and i never flame after getting cheesed. i also never cheat and i dont openly lie to others and spread bad rumors, i help ppl in the strategy forum in tl and at ggnet. i apologized and cleared the air with almost all ppl who i been in grudge with and yet i end up getting most shit in the entire foreign scene...

Thanks for completely proving my point and not interpreting any posts correctly.
I have to add I like watching you play, but your character is pretty repulsive. When a lot of people dislike your attitude, it's very unlikely that everyone is just giving you bad manner for no reason.

What's funny is that avi trashes Morrow in his interview and then call him moron, and nobody calls him bm. You guys go read Morrow interview where he is supposed to be cocky or a "prick". He has been respectful to everybody, and says that he wants good relationships with everybody.
People just rage that someone not that famous get so high on the ladder and cheeses so much. You can dislike the style, but the way people talk about Morrow is just full of shit. Especially considering how many bad manners, really bad manner players there is in this top 48 (Idra can't lose a game without crying like a little girl and insulting his opponent).

I've been reading these threads and observing all this drama, what people say to Morrow and how he responds. I think I get it now with Morrow. He has a way of pissing people off without ever realizing it. He has a rational explanation for all of the things he does and he doesn't run around BMing people so he ends up scratching his head wondering why they get pissy for "no reason." As far as he can see, he's completely in the right. But they do have reasons.

Dunno why people are calling you childish although you had such a good reason to insult the country! I cant imagine how they dare to claim that this argument was brainless.....

Morrow, you are a great player.
That being said, it would be much better if you stopped defending yourself all the time, you care too much what people think of you. Just admit you got flaws and move on. Work on the flaws that piss other people off, because you obviously have some and you obvisouly want people to like you.
That I got from just reading the forums. GL in tsl, I hope to see you in the Ro16.

Coming to an interview and randomely bashing another player is just the most shitty attitude ever. Whatever the player did.

more shit talk = better tourney. it's why they pass out mics during msl/osl drafts and etc and pray for a magma to open his mouth.
morrow should stop defending himself tho. just flame back and don't apologize -- we'll love you more for it

The "intel" I gathered was watching the replay. You said "g" the moment ur allin was scouted... but yeah, I don't understand the 'noble' circumstances you made the decision to leave so early (fully knowing Xiaoxi wouldn't get the points right away) so I guess in terms of "intel" I can't dispute your decision and the reasons behind it. However, from an outsider's point of view, I think it would look BM, not understanding every single nuance and circumstance involved during the TSL ladder. Wouldn't you agree? Oh, and speaking of it was in the end of the tsl ladder where every second was needed to play and win fast , didn't you consider that Xiaoxi would lose a lot of time reporting your under-2min-mark-leave? Just sayin'. From my limited intel it would look you gave little consideration or respect for Xiaoxi's needs...

Well, I suppose people could keep it brief and objective when asked about TSL drama.
However, I disagree that the bashing was random. It had its roots somewhere, fully justified or inadequately done.

great interviews.. I have to agree with avi just a touch on the "Artosis-Hype" thing tho ;D

Awesome interviews. I really enjoy getting to know the players, even ones who I am familiar with, through these interviews. I hope you continue doing them the whole way through the tournament so players can share their stories and feelings about games.

Very Nice I would love to see an interveiw with Nony

Yeah Morrow seems like a nice guy from the limited stuff I've read of him. But I can also see why he grates on some ppl's nerves. It's amazing how much you can piss someone off while technically remaining polite to them. Anyone who has ever worked in retail or hospitality knows how to do this ;p

i rest my case.
You know, I have respect for all pro-gamers, even if i hate their playing style or whatever. Its obvious both yours and avi-loves' perspective in this are very skewed, from what we can tell from this argument is that you tend to do unnecessary at inappropriate times, which from avi's point of view, is very annoying. Now, as far as being bm, i hadn't seen that from either you or avi-love, however, with this comment makes me want to look at those replays that you released and the ones you didn't, granted i don't know if you released all or not (i doubt it). I didn't look at them. But from this very statement, i can tell that you can be bm and that was petty, childish, and quite frankly just a dumbass thing to do, your arguments will always be faulted by this. Why? racism is absolutely stupid, you have gained nothing from this and I cannot say i have respect for all pro-gamers any more, why? because one of them got petty, and decided to be a dick.
so to boil it all down.
Your an idiot, shut up...
