[MLG] Washington DC Preview
October 14th, 2010 01:53 GMT
On October 15th and 16th, Washington D.C. will be host to MLG's second Pro Circuit event. MLG DC does not offer easy money, but rather a big-name player list and a shot at making it big. This tournament has the biggest concentration of quality players ever for Starcraft 2 event in North America. Prestige is attained by defeating the toughest competition, and this weekend there will be a lot to win in terms of prestige.

In a few days, players from North America, Europe, and Korea will land in Washington D.C. carrying their hopes and egos as well as their keyboards and mice. With so many world-class players in contention, we could be seeing some killer match ups and awe-inspiring moments as early as Round 2. We are guaranteed one hell of a show.
The MLG Raleigh champion and TLAF-Liquid member Huk will look to defend his title, but against the toughest competition outside Korea, he will be challenged. However, his toughest competition comes from Korea, as Idra will make the trip, fresh off his qualification for the GSL Season 2. HuK's team members and Brood War phenoms Ret and Tyler will join him at DC as well. Special attention should also be given to rising stars like TL Open #1 and #2 winner SeleCT, IEM Runner-up and MLG Quarter Finalist Qxc, and MLG Raleigh Runner-up KiwiKaki. GSL Season 1 qualifier Torch and Brood War legend White-Ra will also attend, though the Ukranian power-house is said to have been a bit low on practice time since his wedding.
MLG DC: The Contenders By Hot_Bid
Here is my list of the top contenders for the MLG DC title. They are in descending order of who I believe to be most likely to win the tournament. I have also included some personalized (and potentially fictitious) letters from their fans.
7. Honeymooners and New Faces
Why is White-Ra so low on this list? He just got married! Though he was strong during the beta, White-Ra's PvT has been suspect of late. Many fans wonder if he even has time to practice, and the doubters would not be surprised at all if White-Ra was knocked into the loser bracket early on. But until we actually see him play, he remains a legitimate threat.
Ajtls is known for many things on TL, but only after MLG Raleigh could he legitimately add "Top LAN finisher to his list of career achievements. Was Raleigh a fluke, or will we see "Lastshadow" in the Top 4 again? His TvT was certainly solid, taking out several big names, but bad losses to Socke and Kiwi might doom Ajtls if he faces a P early.
Dear White-Ra,
Will you name your first child Fenix or Zeratul? Inquiring minds wish to know.
Regards, Ukrainian Fans
6a. Evil Henchmen
EG's biggest threat to win flies in from Korea, but Incontrol, Machine, Lzgamer and Inka hope to make it far as well. At MLG Raleigh, EG vs EG happened in the first round in what could only be a bracket error. Incontrol recovered to finish 13th, but something tells me they're all aiming higher this time.
Dear EG,
Team wrestling match. Incontrol and Idra on one team. Machine, Lz, Inka and Tasteless on the other. Who would win? This is a very important question to me.
Signed, Future Evil Genius
Incontrol versus Tyler was hard fought, close match at MLG Raleigh.
6b. Hustle and Flow
TLAF-Liquid`HuK's not alone at MLG -- his teammates Tyler and Ret will be attending MLG DC as well. Both were regarded as among the best in international Brood War, but neither has scored a significant SC2 tournament win. Ret's only recently returned to heavy practice, so he's coasting on reputation alone. Tyler brushed aside a disappointing MLG Raleigh and rebounded with deep runs in both TL Opens and a recent 3-2 win over Qxc in the GGI.
Dear Liquid Players,
How do you feel about Nazgul's cowardly play (cannon rushing) in the Liquid FFA? Ret were you angry at him?
--Liquid fanboy
PS - Can I get TLOs autograph? Does he nuke you in practice?
5. Root Rebound, Part I
Will we see five quarterfinalists from the same team at MLG DC? Probably not. But Root remains consistently strong throughout their lineup: CauthonLuck, Drewbie, and Slush finished 6th, 11th, and 12th place at MLG Raleigh. On any given day, one of them can crack the Top 4.
Dear Slush,
Have you ever played ZvZ at a LAN event? Just wondering because you were the only Zerg in the Top 16 last time. Have you picked up any tips from watching Fruit Dealer?
For the swarm, Generic 1800 Diamond Zerg
If Qxc faces HuK again, expect medivacs and an epic match.
4. Root Rebound, Part II
In DC, Qxc looks to improve upon his second place finish at IEM NY. His teammate Kiwikaki didn't make it out of groups, but a the word on the street was that he was feeling quite ill all weekend. At MLG Raleigh, both players were taken out by eventual champion Huk, but they both have demonstrated the ability to advance far in big tournaments.
Dear Kiwikaki,
I tried to talk to you at MLG Raleigh but all you said to me was "Sup dood." Is that the secret to poker success?
--Aspiring Poker Player
3. Natural SeleCTion
Winning one 512-man TL Open event is hard enough. Winning two in a row is nearly impossible, but Select did it anyway, even showing off some nice Protoss offrace skills in the process. Can he carry the momentum to DC? At MLG Raliegh, Select was "seeded" 44th and finished 7th. You can bet he'll have a higher status this time. Currently, he's the highest rated American player in the SC2 International TLPD.
Dear Select
I had a seizure watching your FPView, can you cover my medical costs? I'm staying at a nearby DC hospital.
Yours, MLG Raleigh Spectator
2. Raleigh Repeat
The one thing HuK does not lack is confidence and saving his best for when it matters most. This past weekend at IEM American Championships, he 3-0'd out of his group, lost to qxc in the semifinals, and promptly mothership and carrier rushed two games, going down 0-2 to Drewbie. But Huk rallied and managed to pull out the 3-2 comeback win for a respectable third place finish. Many other players would be happy with that result, but Huk was stewing. He expects to win every event he enters, and didn't even know the prize money for third place at IEM. But this particular field is loaded, and repeating as champion will be a daunting task.
Dear Huk,
I'm your biggest fan! You beat qxc really easily at MLG Raleigh but since then he's beaten you in both TL Opens and in at IEM. Do you want me to break his legs or something for you?
--HuK Bouncer #1
Almost 50% of TL users predict Idra to win MLG DC.
1. The Non-Korean from Korea
It was a disappointing GSL1 for EG.IdrA. Fortunately, he promptly qualified for GSL2, and is infinitely wiser this time. A lesson from Lotze: "If your opponent appears to be doing a cheese build you received a scouting report about, he may still actually be going proxy void rays". The stakes aren't quite as high at MLG DC for Idra, but the pressure is just the same. He's here to win, and anything short of making the finals would be seen as a failure.
Dear Idra,
Please 6-pool. Just do it once. Cool did it in the quarterfinals of the GSL. Even if it fails, every player you play from then on has it in the back of their minds. One time!!
Sincerely, A useful fan toi have
This Saturday, one player will walk away with a cool $2,500 and the respect of an ocean of nerds. MLG DC is the first "open" North American live event with this many top international players, and it's open slots sold out in a matter of minutes. But if you were not able to sign up, take heart -- passes for November's MLG Dallas are still on sale, and if the opportunity to school a pro isn't enough of a motivation, Dallas boasts an increased $17,500 prize pool.
Spectator passes are free, and there's no experience quite like watching matches on a big screen with hundreds of Starcraft 2 fans. But for those that cannot make it out to DC, Day9 and JP will cast the tournament live on MLG's stream. Go to mlgpro.com at 5:00 PM EDT on Friday for the first round coverage. You can find the details of the event at the MLG, StarCraft 2 information page. For a full list of the players, go here. Check out the live report thread once the games get rolling and don't forget to cheer for the Liquid` players, especially Ret, who made the trip all the way from the Netherlands in his first big SC2 live event.

this article is made of pure win. it captured my anticipation of the event perfectly. damn man, im so pumped!! cant WAIT to see it, and all the guys are quite likeable and certainly bring a lot of skill.
go for it!
|
God this writeup is so good. I'm cracking up in CS360 laughing at the questions. GL at MLG people!
|
MLG probably has the best production values for an American tourney, so much better than IEM. Also, Idra really does need to do that 6 pool, would be greatest moment of the tourney lol.

No mention of me? I'm a little sad I can't lie. These guys won't know what hit them =]
|
gogo TLAF-Liquid!
Hope ret does well
|
Oh man if Idra did something like a 6 pool or even a bling bust in an ace match and his opponent was just like "WTF" that would be so epic...
|
thanks for the write up. good read.
hope the liquid guys do well!
|
Good write-up, cant wait for the event. Love those 'fan' quotes Lol!

Hoping for breakout performances from former gosu bw players Nony and Ret.

ahaha, a useful fan to toi have. Brilliant.

IdrA fighting!!!!! And hopefully Ret can make a triumphant return with some practice under him. Basically go zerg!
|
qxc is my favourite white Terran, TLO is awesome, but he puts stuff on the high ground, wtf!

Can't wait to see this. I'm so excited.

Awesome writeup btw, the quotes were awesome. Idra and Huk, gogo!
|
|
See you all this weekend!
|
Inflow Fighting! Hoping for some AMAZING games though. As long as everyone plays well I'll be happy no matter who comes out on top.
|
Hoping for HuK to win, but expecting idrA to win (if he's on top of his game and not getting owned by cheese because of poor scouting).
There's a lot of talent though so there's a lot of underdog contenders that could win imo as well.
|
|
|
lol loved the letters from hot bid. HuK fighting!
|
gogogo idrA and Slush!! Also I'm super pumped to see White-Ra, I hope he's back to form after spending all his time kanoodling his wife. I always loved watching him (play, not kanoodle).
|
GO WHITERA!! Hope he shows up in his wedding suit! <:
|
Hahaha i loved the idra fan quote. I hope he wins it!
|
No love for any of us T_T It's ok though!
|
I think QXC will beat HuK if they meet. It seems his TvP is impeccable right now. His switches between harass, drops and straight attacks are timed well. Dont know how his other match ups are.
|
Cool write up and lol @ the fan quotes. This is going to be an awesome tournament.
|
Spades and Masq fighting!
Should be a great event!

I've decided that since I'm attending, I should root loudly for any terran, hopefully loud enough to anger zerg and protoss users watching the stream. hopefully not lough enough that i get kicked out though... maybe i'll have to organize and combine forces with other terran users.
|
qxc fighting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Wicked write up, I'm pumped!
|
Can't decide whether to root for Team Liquid, or Root! T_T
It's a rough world, but I'ma have to go with whoever has less people in the later stages, qxc hwaiting!
|
Hoping for strong performances from the old school BW players as well as the Zerg players (except IdrA, only because I assume he will so there's no need to hope). I want to see players like Machine and Nony and WhiteRa go further into the tournament then at Raleigh. I'm sick of seeing the same old stuff :p
|
idra playing from korea?
go idra, show us something finally -_-
|
|
|
I'm rooting hard for EG to do well, looking towards Select if he can perform at a LAN, Huk, Kiwi, Idra to take it, can't wait at all, only 34 more hours x.x
|
We all know TLO is gonna win it ;D
Seriously tho i think HuK can pull it off again. IdrA is good but as everyone agrees hes to predictable. If HuK could use to his advantage he should be able to pull it off
GL guys TEAMLIQUID FIGHTING!!!!!
PS GO TLO (even tho hes not in this tourny :D)

Cant wait for this, though i hope they release vods/replays a bit earlier this time around ...

These kind of announcements really should include time zone information, like most other events do.
I'm really excited for this one! Go HuK!

Wait, Fenix isn't playing? What a shame.
Dear Idra,
Please 6-pool. Just do it once. Cool did it in the quarterfinals of the GSL. Even if it fails, every player you play from then on has it in the back of their minds. One time!!

I don't think this is physically possible. His body is trained to click on that hatchery and press S,D as soon as he enters a game.
|
6pool is for skilless noobies. IdrA might be the favourite but I don't think he has a much greater chance of winning than Huk, Tyler, Qxc, Select etc.... You just never know, especially in these fluky non-seed formats. BUT that just makes it even more exciting really. Looking forward to some great games!
|
i wish fenix stayed for MLG DC. He'd win it all ez.

GO IDRA! Please Blizzard release 1.2 !

Holy crap is it about time already??
This should be tons and tons of fun. :D

I'm hoping for an epic IdrA vs. HuK finals that drags out to an ace match.
And I'm totally rooting for HuK!
GOGO TL! GOGO HUK!
Nice writeup too, I laughed at the "A useful fan toi have" :D

IMO the winner will be either Idra or Select. Some of the non-invite players this time around should have a decent shot of breaking top 8.
|
I'll be attending the entire tournament as well, and MLG has said that they will have an open press room for uploading, so you can expect close-to-real-time pictures like I got from IEM. =)

I love how everyone still call him White-Ra, even though he changed name to DuckloadRa ^^
|
Josh, will you be doing more videos like you did at the last mlg? I really enjoyed those.
|
How is new patch going to affect the MLG?
Are players even going to get a shot to really test the changes before first round? Maybe a couple games during warmup? Most of these guys are traveling and settling in at the moment would be my guess.
|
Yeah, if people are boarding planes now, they might be a little screwed. There's 3.5 hours of in-venue warm-up time, and I'm not sure how many PCs they have. If they're local or flying tomorrow morning, I guess they may still have a little time.
IdrA is probably on a plane right now, though, unless he flew in super early to avoid jetlag or something. Good thing these changes shouldn't really hurt him.

There were 32 PCs at raleigh so everyone had to take turns practicing. I would recommend getting your games in tonight and just warm up your hands tomorrow unless you get there right at 1 at practice the entire time.

Does anybody have a working link to buy an hdpass? ___ The link provided on their website is broken. Maybe there uis another link somewhere? Need this T___T
|
The date on the calendar is wrong, I was very freaked out.
|
It's going to keep looping until it goes live, which is ~22 hours from now.
|
Lets see can Zergs snatch another one

HuK FIGHTING!!!!!!1 I hope he'll bring a pillow again ^^

The casters say this befor they break to commercials: "and we will be seeing HD and Husky here casting the next game, as soon as we come back from commercial break"
And then it loops through 1 game and a bunch of commercials, it doesn't start over from the beginning of the cast, it doesn't even start at the beginning of the game I think. Anyway I'm not really complaining I just was surprised and wasn't sure if it was happening to anyone else, you answered my question, thanks!
It's probably something to do with the octoshape thing they use, it looks like some sort of p2p thing, I guess it's busted. Is it happening to the paid subscribers too?

Great write up and hilarious comments from anonymous people (ehm: Hot_Bid)

Anyone who doesn't thing Idra is a commanding favorite and it's his tourney to lose is delusional.
I don't even think it will be close; he is simply so much better than the competition.
|
75% chance Select or Idra wins, but between the two I would slightly favor Select.

24 hours ago I would have agreed with you but with patch I think Idra's stocks just went up alot.
Looking forward to it!

Gonna be watching. GO EG AND LIQUID!

so uh, is there the best surprise ever, or is blizzard just confused? http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/832174533
On the StarCraft II front, 64 of the best players, including luminaries like MLG Raleigh's champion HuK, as well as IdrA, White-Ra, TLO and iNControl

ROFL ... TLO's in Korea still?

Was just about to post this ... would be really cool if TLO will be there too.

Really nice writeup. I would love to see Idra vs anyone for the finals.

Gogo idra, and really laughed on this "A useful fan toi have" Smash every terran face, you sexy beast :3

Incontrol said that the shirt didn't arrive in time But he will be wearing it at MLG Dallas.

You're either a troll or the delusional one. No one in the tournament is safe against SeleCT and anyone from root or eg can probably beat everyone in the tournament.
Also the patch doesn't really help IdrA or any Z that much against T except that they can more safely open. Anything passed early game is basically still the same.
With that said, I'm rooting for slush, select, qxc and taurent - such a savage P player for being relatively unknown.

He just got into GSL2 Ro64, why would he leave now?
I'm looking forward to seeing what hell can the new patch stir up.
|
I think sayting Idra will win and no one else has a chance is kinda rubbish, Huk and many others can beat him on the top of their game
|
My Predictions: 1st: Idra 2nd: Huk 3rd: Qxc 4th: White-ra
Mark my words. Idra is a force that no man at DC can contend with, not even QXC or Huk will be able to pull a combined 3 games off him in the semi-finals and finals.

can't wait... already have HD purchased!

stupid question but i am not able to catch these games live...how long will it take to upload the vods? hopefully i can watch them sunday afternoon =)
|
Im curious if they will use 1.1.2 patch for the tourney the way the rules read it would seem that they would which may throw a wrench in the competition if so.
|
No brackets yet? Anyways, here's my top 5
1. Incontrol 2. Idra 3. Huk 4. Select 5. Qxc
|
Brackets won't be up until 20 minutes or so before they start playing. At least, that's how it was in Raleigh.

Will there be quick vods up anywhere online? I don't think MLG provides any good quick vod service, and with the HQ pass bought you can only rewind an hour prior to present..
help anyone?
|
I really hope we get some video coverage this time around, every major international SC2 tournament so far has had such lack luster coverage
|
The production will probably be identical to MLG Raleigh's. They've been doing it like that for a long time with WoW/Halo/etc.
|
I wrote up a mini preview of a smaller list of players to watch out for over at http://sc2o.com It's a little crazy that this writeup doesn't have any fanatic players, despite how well Fenix performed in NY.
|
Should be a great tournament.
Predictions:
1. SeleCT 2. IdrA 3. HuK 4. qxc
|
anyone know when the stream starts?
|
Should be in exactly 3 hours. 5:00 pm EST.

The players are here and warming up now, DC is going to be great.

Damn, I really want to go today but I just can't make it until tomorrow, I feel like I'm missing soooo much!!
So, any word on the amount of spectators and seats available?
Also, for those who are already there and just spectating, is it COMPLETELY open, as in, you just walk in and sit down? I'd like to know if I need to be there early tomorrow morning to wait in line for a spectator pass or something. I know it's free, but I'm so paranoid I'm going to drive really far and then it be too crowded to even get in.
|
Does one need to purchase a pass to watch the games? If so can someone please provide a link?

As far as seating goes, there are some bleachers in front of the projector to watch the broadcast. Might be a little tough to grab a seat but there is plenty of open space to stand and spectate.

|
Hm.. is it still off for you guys? Just want to be sure I'm not missing anything.
|
Still no stream for me....
|
it started for me a while ago, and after a few minutes it went off
|
No stream here yet. Anyone know what is going on?
|
It looks like stream is up in beetween the matches xD
Anyways ... I'm waiting 10 more mins then I go to sleep. Hopefully there will be some videos up on youtube for me to see tommorow
|
Any updates? Is anyone getting the stream? Do you have to pay for HD to get it?
|
from the live blog:
5:29 MLG|Shrew: Okay we'll be going live soon!
5:07 MLG|Shrew: Small technical difficulty, we'll be up and running soon. As soon as we're online we'll start off with the pre-game show and then the matches. You're not going to miss anything!
|
This is so bad. Its 1:00 a clock in the morning and no stream. I think need do go sleep aswell.
|
Yeah I'm going also.
When they put the stream up it seems there will be 30mins prematch... I'm too tired. Just wanted to see couple of matches before I go. Hopefully catch some IdrA play ...
Well, go go IdrA!
Youtube my faith is in you.

You have to refresh it. For some reason it got linked up with the halo 3 stream. It should be a title screen for sc2 w/ music playing.
|
just watched some halo 3 ctf game on the pit lol
|
This is starting to get ridiculous.
|
The live blog is posting results but no commentary stream yet
|
|
The brackets aren't correct btw, unless half of the halo 3 teams are playing against the starcraft 2 players
|
This is kinda sad, I'm glad I didn't pay for the HQ stream...
|
On October 16 2010 07:58 guluru wrote: The brackets aren't correct btw, unless half of the halo 3 teams are playing against the starcraft 2 players
cuz they didn't finish making the brackets.

yea you have to refresh it every 5 seconds while they update it. Turns out MLG is not up to par. ^^
|
I did pay for this.... and I'm really upset that I've been watching a logo. So many matches have gone by already.
People are trolling in the facebook chat saying that Idra ragequitted out of his match and dropped out of the tournament.
|
I can understand delays due to technical difficulties, but if they're going to skip the pregame entirely that would...yeah suck. Hopefully they still recorded it.
|
okay: stream says: live in 10 mins... i can see ppl behind the logo already...
|
|
|
day9 looks very sexy
|
Well so much for that lol
|
my God, they've really taken it to the limit when it comes to broadcasting in bad quality.
Sad panda, but oh well. Its free at least ^^

i liked the map introduction by the female voice. but i would be more interested in painuser torch instead of some blabla
|
Yeah idra is a girl - Day9 lolz
|
lol he just called machine "incontrol" haha
|
Is anyone else seeing non-starcraft content when they try to view the starcraft stream?
|
sometimes that happens, yeah...
|
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH stream not working?
|
Is it just me or is the only thing on stream Halo 3?
|
Stream is back
|
They said they increased the stream quality... but here is what happens. I login with my HD access code and im automatically redirected to the HALO 3 stream. When I click SC2, I see the option to "upgrade to HD." When the games are playing, the stream looks WORSE than 360p. I mean WTF.
|
Anyone else watching the stream missing some of the lower and right part of the picture?
|
Damn that game was getting good too.
|
Idra gonna take this down imo.
|
no terran progressing? what happend to select against tyler (first encounter)? p.s.: i really liked qxc's game so sorry he lost that crucial battle.
|
OMFG what is up with DJ Wheats obsession with "the back door" and his constant laughing reference to it?
