[LP] Credit where Credit is Due
April 28th, 2011 06:42 GMT
By tofucake, Aesop, and Liquipedia's Guardian SaintLiquipedia Weekly #17 Now with flashy coins
Happy Thursday to you all!
You may have noticed a new addition to TeamLiquid in the past few days. Liquipedia is proud to announce that we've finally gathered enough incriminating evidence against convinced Nazgul to put up some special new coins for us. You may notice them at the bottom right of your posts. Yes. There.
You were probably curious about what these coins were and used your 300 APM (no spam right!) to frantically click the coins hoping they would do a trick for you. Sadly, these aren't jumping coins or coins that flash pretty colors but they still do something important.
Making edits on Liquipedia is one of the most thankless jobs on the site. Your edits on Liquipedia are not like posts on the forums where you can easily track down who has posted what and articles are the combination of multiple contributions to Liquipedia. To reflect the hard work people do on Liquipedia we have decided to give contributors to Liquipedia special coins to represent the amount of work they have done on Liquipedia.
Essentially, these coins are to Liquipedia what the unit icons (or otherwise, if you're someone special) are to TeamLiquid. The premise is quite simple. Do stuff on Liquipedia. Sometimes your coins will change.
This is the only guy besides Mr. Potter who knows how they really work
Usually we like to keep these things secret. You'll never (or maybe eventually) know. Or maybe you will (won't). We do(n't) know. And we are(n't) telling.
Okay, fine. Since you won't stop pestering us, here's the deal ...
Where k1 and k2 are weighting factors, n is the number of edits, a and N being constants, f and F are functions based of the number of characters altered, P a linear functional and of course the integrals are Lebesgue. For obvious reasons the calculation is done in base 391.
But never mind how they are calculated, here are the important facts for you to know:
- The rating is calculated using both the number of edits and the length of the edits
- Edits are counted from both the Brood War section and the StarCraft 2 section
- The coins are ordered by color (bronze, silver, gold etc) then number of coins
- People with more coins are pretty awesome people and deserve free beer if you meet them IRL
You may have some additional questions about how these little guys work. To save some time, here is a brief FAQ:
Why don't my coins display in all forums? The coins will not show in forums where team icons are displayed. This will be fixed at some point in the future where you will have a profile option to display the coins always, or never, or sometimes.
What is the highest coin level? Only R1CH and the flying monkeys know. We know there exists at least a Gold Coin. How many beyond that is something we can only speculate about.
Can I see a Top X Ranking list? We'd prefer to keep that under wraps for the time being. We might re-evaluate whether to display this list or not at a later date. However, for your convenience we have a list of the Top 1 ranked contributor:
Why can't I automatically Tweet/Facebook people about me ranking up! Do it yourself - you have 300 APM right?
And finally, the Liquipedia team wants to thank the following helpers: Idea and Emotional Support - Plexa, Nazgul Graphics - jhNz, disciple Coding - SonuvBob, R1CH
Your princess is in another castle,
- Liquipedia staff

Good idea. hope this gets the sc2 build section movin
|
teamliquid achievments. Well, at least its for the greater good
|
Woohoo!! There's been alot of conjecture about what the coin rank-up formula is. Thanks for clearing that one up LOL. base 391 is hardcore
|
I gotta get me some gold coins.
Edit: Will the coins show up under the team selection drop down, or will the team selection have to be set to None?
|
well damn, time to do some writing !
|
Are we allowed to earn coins if we ask(beg) for them without any contributions at all? Lets say I'm in bronze league, do my facts(opinions) matter towards the balancing of the system and will you tailor your rating system to hide my losses so I can't see my losses?
If any of those are answered as yes, I feel like I am now of value to TL.
|
Liquipedia is the shit, such a good idea, I am sure this will boost participation
|
But my mood!
Thats a random function...integral of f-1 degree leads to a ln.....waahhh
+ Show Spoiler + And what exactly are the constants/functiosn1?! Itd be cool if somethingl ike that was used :D
edit: and whats the difference between a weighing factor and a constant...
|
Can we expect platinum, diamond, master and grand master coins in the future?
|

And then of course remove the bronze coins and then add a Elite Grandmaster League.

The Liquipedia coin system is not for the feeble-minded to attempt to understand!
|
Going for Gold D:< SEE YOU ALL THERE [salle]
|
YEAH.
Now that there are pretend rewards, that Strategy section should hopefully grow a touch
|
very soon , in this world, when starcraft conquers e-sports and teamliquid stands on the very top of esports world, there is nothing more impressive that you can put on your work resume other than TL achievements
Nice to see the liquipedia contributors rewarded.
|
<3 Liquipedia
You guys are awesome!
|
haha, this is a nice token of appreciation :D
|
Great idea, I'm sure it'll motivate some folks to get to typing.
|
Happy Thursday to you all!
You just gotta love the Winnie the Pooh reference!
And great job on giving away some shiny coins for those working hard on liquipedia!
|
Yay!
C'mon guys lets see a USEFUL SC2 build order section!
|
that is a pretty basic formula... Hopefully this will get the builds section growing because as a zerg player, and im sure many of my fellow zergs would agree, i have been sick of continually going to the site and seeing about 5 proper builds for each matchup, only one general build (7RR) and 40+stub builds!
someone get started on those please great initiative TL!
|
I keep checking liquipedia for just about everything, but I am saddened to find that there's not really any useful information besides the blindingly obvious. Hopefully I can contribute something of worth.

Nice work! Hopefully this convinces a few people out there to dig in and contribute to make LP an even better resource than it already is It's heartening to see overlays and player profiles used in major events that are paraphrasing your own contribution to a player page in liquidpedia.
Bring on the free beers!

forever bronze but still, I like it :D

silver! havnt touched LP in a long long time too

This is lebesgue integration. You integrate according to a function (measure).
As far as I can remember if you write it in the common Riemann notation df is actually f(dx), but its a while back since I used it so don't quote me on that.
|
How come credit is repeated in that quote? I'll never understand, isn't it redundant? "credit where it's due" seems fine! (not hating on the title of this thread, just the quote in general)
|
So if i help contribute to liquipedia for brood war, I am eligible for coins as well right?
|
Oh, I've been wondering what those coins were.... On another note, cheers to everyone who has ever contributed to Liquipedia.

Oh man, this is sure to entice involvement now. Great stuff as always guys :D
|
Thats really nice guys, it is a nice way to see who is working hard there
|
|
This is a fantastic idea. I think it will really motivate a lot of people to really tighten up the strategy sections and keep everything updated.
|
Good idea.
People liked to be recognised for their work, even with symbolic tokens.
|
The coins system is too ambiguous, how do you figure out your Coins MMR? Will you be matched will articles of similar difficulty to edit?
on a serious note: Hopefully this won't end up spamming liquidpedia with minor useless edits
|
lol when you click on the linked thread, stupid monkeys are blocking vision. This whole announcement was just funny :D
|
|
So that means I actually have to contribute to get my bronze coin and not be ashamed to not do anything ? But oh well for now there is no way in hell I would change my affection for ACE for a little coin, even if I had one ! But cool idea, I guess we will see more stuff now and someone can find the liquipedia brotherhood, ranks based off their coins of course.

As you can see, team icons override the coins. But where there are no team icons, there are coins!
Also, this will hopefully boost contributions, as nobody should ever be able to live with the shame of being ONLY bronze.

Nice idea. I noticed these coins like 2 days ago Looks good... :D

Um. Are you sure there's enough people checking edits? I'm just questioning.

^^ Me too, I'm just a little worried about the quality of the edits that might happen just to get a coin in their sig.

If f is differentiable, then df=f '(x)dx. Formally, you can think of it as multiplying df by dx/dx to get df=(df/dx)dx. If f isn't differentiable, then you have to view the integral as a Lebesgue–Stieltjes integral.

I wonder what counts as edits? I read some of the articles, and I noticed some grammatical errors. Are any and all legitimate contributions counted? Is cleaning up articles counted? I guess my real questions is: What edits do not count?

Wish I knew enough information about a subject to actually edit LP

Yay! I was wondering what all that talk meant in the last R1CH quotes bump, but it's cool to see! Editting LP is fun but its cool to see some brownie points Thanks TL!
|
Great incentive! I've been meaning to do more edits lately, and this just might give me the motivation.
Edit: Ooh, I'm bronze! Shame it doesn't show next to team icons.

Support for Liquipedia = awesome. Great idea, and keep up the good work!

One thing is that all people that have a BW team in their signature are not able to display coins. Not sure if this has been taken into account or not. I removed CJ from my sig so my coins will show up instead.

I have 2 bronze coins, yay! (in another thread apparently this one shows my T1 support D: )
|
I just realized that the icon for me is a silver coin and not just a Liquipedia circle in the wiki color scheme, haha.

This is a very good idea.

It shows in all BW threads and in all the news articles teams over the coins. In SC2 threads, it shows only the coins because there is no team to override the coins.
|
Sweet, guys! Something needed to be done.
|
The guys at LP needed some kind of compensation, their work is amazing! :D

It's a great idea but I'm worried about the amount of people going for coins and not really trying to provide useful information.

The thing is, people who "whore" for content will get banned (as has always been the policy regarding users who make shit edits), and all of their edits will be rolled back. If an editor misses them, or you get there first, then you have the chance to undo their edit, which potentially earns you lots of coin score.
Maybe.

These are some pretty cool changes. It makes me want to contribute to liquipedia more, but I'm sure everyone is on top of all that. =P I noticed that I had a coin icon, and to be honest, I don't feel that it's well deserved. I did make an entry, but it was for a build that's probably outdated by now. ^^;

well, at least there has been one addition into the builds section for zerg (ice fisher)! But i guess liquipedia will just evolve and mature with time, especially with a cool lookin symbol for an incentive good idea TL

Take that recent Shine game where he went lurker/guardian/hydra. Hadn't really been used for like... 8 years (commentators joked that the Terran was likely in grade school the last time the strategy was used and that he'd probably never played against it). Just because it isn't viable currently, doesn't mean it shouldn't be listed. Maybe someday some gosu will look at it and go "hmm, I bet if I tweak this here and that there, I can make it work again."

This actually seems like a very great idea. It will get some users recognized for their contribution.
