[GOM] 3, 2, 1... Blastoff!
March 28th, 2009 23:16 GMT
The Averatec|Intel GOM Classic is beginning its third season March 29th, 2009. The players will be competing for a grand prize of 40 million won. Second place will recieve 15 million won, third and fourth will recieve 5 million won each. And all the action will be brought to us, live, by Nick "Tasteless" Plott and "SuperDanielMan" Lee.
The match list for season 3 is 124 players strong, a reduction from last season's 180 players, yet the field is as wide open as it was in season one. The reason? MBCGame HERO, OnGameNet SPARKYZ, eSTRO and inexplicably, SK Telecom T1 have all decided to pass on participating. This disappointing news means, of course, that last season's champ, Bisu, will not be defending his title!
Boasting Kespa's support and a large prize pool, it's difficult to comprehend why some teams-- particularly SK Telecom T1-- are refusing to participate, but even as questions about GOM's snubbing cloud the air around this tournament, I can't help but get excited about the players that are participating. Will JangBi finally earn first place? Will Jaedong avoid the same pitfalls that eliminated him last season? Does sAviOr have it in him to return to form, despite uninspiring showings in other 2009 leagues? We'll soon see!
On March 29, PDT(PST+1) 02:00, the round of 128 kicks off with games featuring ToSsGirL, IdrA, Rage and ClouD. They'll be facing off against practical unknowns Casey of KHAN, Trap of STX, PerfectMan of OZ, and Fire of Stars. The maps for these games will be Tau Cross, Destination and Andromeda. Visit GOMtv.net for a full (if visibly inaccurate) bracket.
Please take note that the "round of 128" is confusingly a round of 64 players. On April 5th, after the first round of play, 28 "semi-seeds" (for lack of a better term) will enter the tournament and compete for the chance to play the "real seeds" on April 12th. So, basically:
Round 1: 64/2 = 32 Round 2: (32+28)-28 = 32 Round 3: (32+32)/2 = 32 Round 4: 32/2 = 16 etc.
If that explanation is too convoluted to follow (and I'm not saying it isn't), take a look at the bracket on GOMtv.net and it'll make a bit more sense.
So, get ready, 'cuz this is about to takeoff!

I picked a faceless guy over Cloud I really just have so little respect for his current state , prove me wrong buddy

LOLOLOL their using an old picture of Idra back when he had all that hair on the gom site.
EDIT: OMFG look at the brackets if tossgirl somehow gets by casey (samsung guy) and movie (possible but extremely unlikely) shel play Jaedong...

Lame . No T1. No returning champ.

lol idra looks like weird al in that pic

OGN Sparkyz and MBC Hero are afraid of the new league maybe? (ogn = osl, mbc = msl). That makes sense in that it would be very coincidental the two teams who own the two other leagues are not participating. Skt is weird though.

zzzz no Bisu?
Savior. Your time is now.

WTF no Bisu ?!! Fantasy ? Best ? sounds like someone was on dope...

The lack of some high-profile teams is surely going to hurt the future of this league...let's hope this doesn't continue. The GSL is great stuff.

So is GOM floundering now? I hope they're making enough enough money to continue, especially since there's an English stream.
MBC and OGN not participating is logical, given their sponsors. But ESTRO and T1's lack of participation makes it clear that GOM is not as important the proleagues in their mind.
Oh well, at least Khan and CJ are both participating. So I have plenty of rooting interest.

My god... brakets seem impossible >.>
Is Iris (Beserker) on hwaseung!??! and why are there TWO tempests??? (one is Z and other T)
|
ah disappointing that teams are pulling out of gom, hell i don't even watch proleague so i hate how it dominates the coaches minds and players' practice.
but if i read this correctly then idra will be in his first televised match tonight? if so then i'm super psyched about that.
also tossgirl playing is always cool, plus they both have relatively weak opponents so that should give them both an opportunity to perform!
really looking forward to this if idra + tossgirl are televised.

Yeah... it's the main reason I've held off on putting together the R&S. But it's beginning to look like I'll have to deal with broken information at least for the start of the tournament. Oh well. As long as the games are fun to watch I can put up with some disorganization.
|
I thought Idra's name was changed to faggylittlebear?

GL sAviOr and anyone on CJ
looking forward to SuperDanielMan and that other guy too... teh best in english comentary imo.
"SuperDanielMan, who would you go gay for?" :O

According to http://ch.gomtv.com/sub.gom?ch=402&type=43, Group 5A seed (marked Tempest - CJ T) is actually Iris and the Group 5B Seed (marked Iris) is actually Hiya.
There's quite a few typos, but at least you can cross reference them with the other language bracket.

go go Tadzio! You're an inspiration
Sad to see T1 out of this tournament, but I can see why: progamer schedules are insane enough as it is. I think the solution is to space out Starleague matches a bit more.
|
Savior actually has a shot...
After Bisu won the last one, why would T1 pull out?
|
Bisu is prollly pissed of at his lose in the special match and is like "YO THE ENTIRE TEAM WILL NOT PLAY CUZ I LOST" lol
other than that i dont get why they wont participate? maybe cuz there are foreigners.. but then again I dont think they care. as a matter of fact if I was there coach I would concentrate on GOM cuz its very well known, more than MSL and what not imo. MSL and OSL grouping sysem is a little confusin and not as exciting.
anyway. IdrA better make it to alteast round of 32

Really? More like he can win as long as he doesn't face a decent Zerg player throughout.
Surprised Daniel Lee can commentate when Estro isn't in. Isn't he Estro coach? No Skt1 sucks as well, no defending champ. Also still sad OGN and MBC aren't in but at least those are understandable.

SK-T1 not taking part in GomTV Classic? What a pity

just making sure... Live stream of this starts at 5am EST?
Anyone know how soon after live stream the video's are uploaded?

You're thinking of Machine.
T1 not participating is such a huge bummer. I wonder how the players feel about this decision, particularly Bisu...
|
What in the hell is with some teams skipping on this? Sadly this ruins the legacy of this tournament no matter who the winner is.
|
OMG... no SKT?! That means no Boxer or Oov... and no Rainbow or Midas... or BeSt, Fantasy, and Bisu =( So many great players!
|
And I'm wondering if PePe and Baby are playing again.
PePe made it surprisingly far last season, and no one even knew who he was. I'd like to see him, or even other players, like that make it at least that far.
|
Oh man the lack of teams gonna hurt this....
|
Why wouldn't the teams allow the players to participate in GOM?
Quite a lot of good players won't get to play, and I was only going to watch this season for Bisu

well i couldn't fall asleep so I guess i'll be watching this live in a few minutes. GO IDRA.

I'm not gonna miss Bisu. But I like having Best and Fantasy in the mix. Now where the heck is this Bracket you guys keep talking about? I don't see one on GomTV.net, is it on the korean site or something?
|
^^^Nevermind, found the bracket, thanks

im watching the live feed right now....
ads for 15-20 minutes!! man fix ur problems before hand plz

Shame about the missing teams. I guess I won't be following this season.

and we have a winner JD took it all, gg!... ffs ruined my day. no bisu, no fun!

|
I'm going to go ahead and bet on a JD vs Flash finals right away. Jangbi,Stork and Lux needs to make something happen if they want to prevent this.
|
i predict no protoss taking top 3
|
Lilsusie succubus pictures...? Where?
|
I think that the reason why lot of teams pissed GOM is 'cause korea doesn't care about GOM
|
I don't know why some aren't joining in, that's disappointing. I've actually come to really like OGN

I think it's more political than anything. The players definitely care about GOM and there's been quite a bit of interest especially when high profile people start playing each other. It's just that Starcraft is a business and controlled by those who ultimately want to make the dough. Personally, I think the only way to lessen this is to have a players union, but don't know if that's possible with the Korean culture of respect and all.

OGN and MBC players are used to it by now but SKT and eSTRO (did eSTRO miss previous seasons too?). GomTV prizes are just as high as OSL/MSL and I feel like it is a bit easier too. also, SKT1 not participating probably reduces the ratings dramatically.
i wonder, if they will keep the peer rating system for opposing players (bisu defence = 2). i can imagine someone giving july an 11 on attack.
|
gonna have to join the crowd complaining about the lack of T1... WHAT THE HELL, GUYS! not like the other missing teams have no interesting players to offer, but a league without Bisu and Boxer is definitely missing a lot. + Show Spoiler [OSL] +even if Bisu did tank in the OSL I think this is bad Brood War karma for SKT

wait who is Berserker (T) (Hwaseung)?... hiya?
|
So the VOD's don't seem to be up, or are they?
I checked the video page (I could only stay up long enough to see the first two sets) but they weren't up. ;;
|
Man that's a low blow preventing the previous champ from defending his title. GOM must be mad loosing all the hype of SKT players like Boxer and Bisu.
|
|
To everyone reading this: GomTV is now watchable without any sort of payment, so check out the GOM site!
|
|
YellOw > Jaedong finals
|
I thought they were bringing HD video as standard to all viewers? (Wasn't this mentioned last season?)
I heard them mentioning the 49.99 as a decision from the "higher-ups," so is that what it's for?
Oh well, it's still more than watchable at the current resolution.
|
tossgirl has this for sure like every other time... but being realistic flash vs jd for finals
|
many teams missing out. . . *sigh* what a tragedy.
|
Hey, why isn't there any Liquibetting for the GOMtv Classic tonight?
Darkelf vs. [Heng] [Child] vs. Bogus [Violet] vs. cGacmo [Orion] vs Strict
I wanna bet! (Bracketed fellers are my guess for the win!)
|
Idra fails.... after that first game I was like "Yeah he's gonna take it, he was brilliant!"... but no.
|
|
No returning champ sucks but oh well im still excited about gom.
|
this is going to be cool even though some teams aren't participating
|
I have an idea. OGN and MBC should cast games in English!! Sorry, GOMtv.
I do think that three major leagues would be too much for the players. Think of MLB, NHL, NBA saying regular season is too long.
We want players to have vacations, too. And with less leagues, they can prepare better, resulting in more gosu games.
