[OSL] RoEight Update
July 29th, 2009 08:08 GMT
Last Thursday was Day 1 of the Bacchus OSL 2009 quarterfinals — meaning the first set of each of its four matches is complete, and four players will take a (commanding, in a Bo3) 1-0 lead into their series' conclusions this Thursday. This article breaks down the Ro8's action thus far, including a sweet recap video for your viewing pleasure!
If the insane conclusion to CJ vs. KHAN wiped previous weeks' OSL action from your memory, refresh it with a peek at the Bacchus OSL 2009's bracket:
Ro8 Day 1 Video Recap

Quarterfinal A 1set Recap
This game was exactly the sort of debacle we've come to expect from intra-team Starleague series. Go.go, painfully aware of the strength of Yarnc's ZvT after years of practice against him, decided he might sneak a win just like Canata did from Jaedong in MSL play the night before: proxy 8-rax.
Unfortunately for Go.go, Yarnc (wisely) suspected cheese and scouted both the proxy barracks and an ensuing proxy factory — two moves characteristic of Fake Yellow's excellent preparation for this OSL. Essentially, Yarnc defeated Go.go using just his scouting drone, which died in the Terran mineral line with three kills (including the proxying SCV). This game was a pathetic showing from Go.go, but I can't imagine he would have fared any better in a straight-up encounter.
Quarterfinal B 1set Recap
This game was the night's best. If you've got 15 minutes to spare, consider watching its VOD!
Unlike Go.go, Type-b had the stones to take it to his heavily-favored teammate opponent in a standard game. Though he was no doubt helped along by Outsider's many gases and his opponent's heinously bad dropship and vessel control, Type-b turned in a solid performance that should have Leta fans feeling very uncomfortable; in my Ro8 preview I predicted Type-b could only challenge Leta with "trickery", but it now looks as though these two SPARKYZ are fairly evenly matched.
How much longer will we underestimate Type-b? Considering he has no significant accomplishments prior to this OSL and was conspicuously absent from even Hite's most recent regular season PL lineups, it's hard to see him as a legitimate contender for Starleague gold. But incredibly smart play in this game and his Ro16 set versus Stork suggests Type-b will not end his OSL career as "Bacchus 2009's fluke quarterfinalist".
Quarterfinal C 1set Recap
Quarterfinal C's 1set played out exactly as expected, given these two T1 Terrans' very different playstyles: Fantasy was on the offense throughout. Perhaps knowing that Canata would attempt a standard game, Fantasy used an ingeniously aggressive build — significantly delaying Canata's armory with vultures from a proxy factory, and then following up with 2-port wraith.
Fantasy's strategy prevented Canata from easing into the slow, deliberate macro game he thrives on and thus guaranteed Fantasy a comfortable victory. Assuming Iloveoov isn't handing Fantasy builds to use against his own teammate, this set is strong evidence for Fantasy as a master tactician independent of Coach Oov's influence.
Quarterfinal D 1set Recap
In lieu of my written thoughts on this set, please accept these two images. They capture the game's action perfectly:
One More Thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzAPHVPxgzU#t=17m57s Fantasy turns down an over-eager fan (discuss)
With PL playoffs raging, GOM S3 nearing its conclusion, and the MSL also in elimination stages, my fellow writers riptide, Tadzio, and Hot_Bid are churning out sick news articles at a feverish pace. I'll do my best to keep up! Thanks for reading!
Peace, JWD

Thanks for the video recap, I don't have a lot of time to keep up with all the games during the summer and this is a good replacement for watching all the VOD's.
|
Wow, that video recap was awesome. Leta vs type-b was such an awesome game, near flawless Zerg play.

nice writeup, thanks JWD

leta vs jaedong would be a nice final

Rofl Zero's having an orgasm.
As much as I'd like to see Fantasy v Jaedong Finals, I also want to see Type-B royal road this OSL. This young fellow sounded so charismatic in his interview (Hite Sparky's combined one). But Fantasy is my favourite.
@ Fantasy denying that fan.

Aww... I really hope Leta doesn't turn into another Sea[Shield]...

Fantasy v Jaedong finals isn't possible, they'd meet in the semis

Nice writeup, especially Jaedong vs ZerO
|
i could hardly believe that was type-b. leta made some mistakes, but i think they were mostly due to the pressure. wow.

Fantasy is really dominant. Anyway Canata choosed a normal startup comparing to his MSL over Jaedong.

Everything is possible. Why not Fantasy?

I used to love type-b for his innovative vP, but then he completely disappeared.
I have hope for the sparky underdog.
ZerO, on the other hand...sigh. Poor ZerO.
|
nice writeup, so true on type-b. he has consistently surprised me this season
|
Nice writeup
maaan JD's eyes, killer!
Hoping for a Leta/Yarnc V Fantasy final, which fantasy wins!
|
Jaedong please win another OSL, PLEASE.
|
wow that fan-high-five denial from fantasy was mega-harsh lol, maybe he'd removed his glasses and couldnt see him?
|
type-b played awesome.
i just hope Jaedong doesn't win the whole thing.
|
Rofl at the purple glasses. Gogo still looks like a fish though.
|
type-b keeps disappearing and then coming back when he's not expected... I hope Leta can clear the first loss from his head and take back the series that he should win.
I can't wait for these games, thanks for the update!

Hahaha, I agree, I can't possibly see any other teams as advantageous as SKT1 are..... SKT1 power unite!
|
Oh crap, Yarnc with unbeatable ZvT and decent ZvZ... is almost guaranteed to be in the finals. Sick! And if some T manages to beat Jaedong, he's almost sure to win the gold.

Lol at the Jaedong and ZerO pics!

Though there's no guaranteeing they would've even if they were on opposite brackets.

Big lols at the JD vs zero pics.
Nice writeup.

I completely agree. He was just blown away. I'd hoped for an epic muta showdown.

Nicely put. I like your creative write-ups, JWD.

|
thanks for the writeup ^^
|
How about a type_b vs JD final with type_b dominating? =D
|
The video recaps are really awesome, thanks for that JWD!
Also, the Jaedong and ZerO pictures were hilarious hahaha. ^^
|
oh my god i watched that fantasy game
i just become a bigger and bigger fan every time!
plus anyone spanking canata is huge + points.
I do hope leta can advance to face Yarnc.. and of course the real finals of this OSL will be fantasy VS JD in teh semis
|
i believe leta can go to ro4 and face yarnc
|
Tvz finals being Jaedong vs leta would be amazing
Golden mouse please jaedong!
|
Yep...the pictures describe all!
|
Video recaps are really nice. I enjoy it far more then reading Starleague/Proleague writeups. Keep up the good work.
|
I can't believe Jaedong is a golden mouse contender and is actually a favorite to win this OSL. Fantasy will be his most dangerous opponent by far, and if he can defeat him again I can't see Jaedong losing in the finals.
Of course Fantasy could win, in which case I hope he earns a well-deserved OSL. It's about time he claimed a title.
Basically the finals are happening in the semifinals, as with Flash vs Bisu in Bacchus 2008.
|
Arghh Fantasy or Jaedong? I am so conflicted, both of them deserve to win!
Fantasy has modern Boxer tactics/strategy but Jaedong has killer eyes.
My two favourite races are Zerg and Terran too.
|
I've said it a lot of times already regarding this OSL, but I really hate the bracket gods.
|
LOL @ Jaedong/Zero photos. Clever writeup as always.

You should be enjoying this OSL, anyway

I feel really bad about Zero... he just got bracket fucked >.< I hope that Yarnc and JD goes to the finals but i think that maybe the final is going to be yarnc vs fantasy or type-b vs fantasy
|
I don't like the recap video at all. It does not give the real idea of the matches. Pheraps it could have been arranged in a better way. However it is a nice idea and i hope we will see it better in the further news.

Fantasy > fan. Poor dude. ^_^

Of course a recap video will not have all of the information or any of the suspense that VODs do, but that's sort of the point. What did you expect from the video that was missing?

Pumped for tonight Jaedong and Canata winning for a Jaedong vs Canata rematch with jaedong winning woot
