First I didn't even get what it actually means but when I figured it out I was baffled that there are some people who believe this. I think statistics are so important in the modern world. Educated people should have at least a grasp at it. I don't really get statistics on a deeper level but I know that things like this come from not understanding statistics at all and making assumptions based on anectodes. When MMR based matchmaking as described in the op works correctly it means in practise that people will have about 50% w/l after a sufficient number of games. I bet your win rate is about 50% just like mine even though you are probably a way better player than me.

People used to say the same thing about SC2's system and how frustrating it was that it would match you with someone way better followed by someone way worse to balance it out. Players eventually figured it out after educating themselves (or the less-informed ones got frustrated and quit?). Overwatch is still in that hazy area where there's a lot of information being disseminated but not a lot being properly interpreted, and this leads to silly conspiracy theories fueled by bandwagoning. You don't even have to know statistics (hell, I don't!) to understand the design of a matchmaking system, you just have to keep an open mind about what the developers were going for when they built it and step away from the attitude of victimhood. Understanding that my win rate will be at 50% thanks to MMR has nothing to do with victimhood. I am glad that the matchmaker allows me to have 50% win rate because if I would play against the average player population it would be lower than 50%. My teammates pick terrible heroes or fail to coordinate properly. Is the matchmaker trying to keep me at 50%? The matchmaker determines expected win probability at the time the game is created. It doesn't care that you're on a winning or losing streak. It only looks at your current rating and matches you with 11 other similarly-rated players. Once the game reaches the hero select screen, the outcome is decided solely by the players. It doesn't know which heroes both teams will pick or how well each team will work together. Notice how the author here does not directly deny that the system will keep you at 50%. Instead he answers with a bunch of strawmen by asserting that the matchmaker does not care about streaks or does not know who will pick what. Of course 50% is not achieved by giving one player super bad team mates to weigh him down or whatever. This would not even work. The 50% win rate is simply a logical mathematic consequence of the MMR-based matchmaking which tries to create fair matches. And this is a good thing. When a player consistently has above 50% win rate it means that the matchmaker fails to create even matches for this player. Which can happen for very high MMR players (like the top 100-200 of players) simply because there is noone of equal skill available so he gets matched with worse players when his queue time gets too long.
