Overwatch Open
Starts already tomorrow as I post this. Key points:
- European and North American online qualifiers - Offline finals in Atlanta - $300,000 prize pool - Regional finals Aug 26-28
The Overwatch Open will comprise an online phase run by FACEIT for European and North American teams, as well as Regional and Grand Finals, which will take place at Turner Studios’ ELEAGUE arena in Atlanta. The Grand Final will be presented live on TBS, with simultaneous coverage available via Twitch. Competitors in the Overwatch Open will be vying for their share of a US$300,000 prize pool, making it the largest Overwatch competition to date.

Pretty huge prize pool. Also organised by a solid brand - I like.

How are cross continental online tournaments balanced out regarding to connection delay normally?
|
I think the regions only meet offline in this one ?
Aside from that they can allow teams to go for 20 tick rate client side, which makes playing with 100ish ping not as bad. Otherwise cross region is really homeserver favored. (especially since a some teams really hate cross region)

Pretty cool it is being broadcast on TBS

Bringing esports to TV is like installing navigation into a carriage.

Regional finals, best teams qualify for the offline grand finals.

Not sure I agree. Putting it on TBS gives the opportunity for those not already enjoying eSports to check it out. You certainly don't LOSE anything by it being on TBS because they will simulcast on Twitch. They did the same thing for ELEAGUE CSGO and it turned out pretty good. I watched it on TBS, and Turner brings such a great production team I swear it's the best league I've watched so far.

yeah TV is still big because they try hard to make other media look really bad. So using TV to draw audience is nice. But it still feels like a step backwards in terms of technology, especially if the other media suffers because you go TV and they just restream.

They don't "try hard" to make other media look bad. Other media IS bad. There are countless examples of poor observership, poor production, poor casting on Twitch. But NOBODY wants to look bad on TV. NBA, NFL, soccer, hockey, you name it, the production outshines most Twitch broadcasts, simply because TV has the money. So it's not so much TV making them look bad as them making themselves look bad by comparison.
That being said, what excites me just as much as the potential for new viewers to be introduced to eSports, I'm also very excited for the great production and entertainment. CSGO ELEAGUE has been ridiculously awesome so far.

Fnatic easy 2-0 over xenon.
IDDQD was just demolishing people.

IDDQD is impressive on McCree everytime, seems like he has no off game. Though I was surprised to see fnatic go with a squad based in NA, but it seems like all the big orgs are signing teams in NA at the moment.
|
If I were to compare Overwatch to other games, I would say it is 75% Quake/TF2, and NA has more experience in that area than other regions, so I think NA has a leg up. That's why I think we're seeing big orgs grab NA rosters.

Or they take EU teams and get team houses for them in NA. Which seems to be a trend set by EnvyUs. Since LG dropped mixup and picks up an EU team now and moves them to NA. Maybe because of weird Visa shenanigans.

That may be a better explanation. Everyone wants to live in NA anyway. BrexitPride
