This isn't going to be an epic post like most in this thread, but with all the recent map creations it's got me thinking.
Sc/sc2 game play seems to evolve around maps and how they are designed, for instance Lost temple used to be extremely popular and it was a map with a cliff at your natural which changed the game play completely and drops were a lot more prevalent as well as more varied builds (Imo this was more fun and more exciting to watch and play).
The game seems to have progressed to the point where there are no island maps, very easily protected naturals and most maps are heavily macro oriented. Yes I'm aware that some of these map designs may make certain match up imbalanced, but they would be fun to watch/play non the less.
With that in mind, maybe island maps are not the way to go but how about maps where your ramp is blocked by rocks? This might change up the game play completely and make early game play more interesting.
I'm not much of a map creator, It would be awesome to see some new cool ideas that keep that game balanced.
Perhaps A map where there is an island with several small islands leading to it, so toss could utilize blink several times to reach it?
Anyone else have any interesting design ideas?

Also, I would like to add that a map might seem imbalanced simply because it takes more time for one race to figure out how to play the map correctly. (eg, zerg was much easier to figure out in sc2 then terran)
I think everyone would agree that lost temple was pretty well balanced regardless of the cliff at the natural.

going to have to get a bit more creative than that lol Rocks blocking the main is very imbalanced as it closes a lot of options for each race included FE for zerg which is near necessary in any match-up
as for the islands pathing I'm not so sure but perhaps? it would make air more prevalent I assume lol
and just so mods dont get mad and crack the whip at you, you can click edit above your post to add things, Mods hate double posting
IMO try making your own map/maps or just small examples strewn out a playing field to show everyone what you mean or to provoke ideas?
I have a few new concepts in >>>MY MAP THREAD<<<, be sure to check them out and comment on my maps if you want

Until we can smooth out what a standard, balanced map should look like, people shouldn't try to add many gimmicks into their maps. Even some of the current ladder maps have their faults, so IMO we should give it some time. If all of a sudden players find that a different style of play is dominant, it would change how a map needs to be balanced.
