Hey guys It's been a while since I made a big map project, my last one was Micro Tournament made back in 2010. It's still one of the most active maps and has been for the last few years. After playing Age of Empries 2 and Age of Wonders 3 during LotV downtime I realized how fun it can be to just play RTS casual style and just mass armies and clash with your opponents. I remember all of these great maps from BW and one of my favorites was Zone Control where you pretty much just enjoy watching stuff die. I did my best of re-creating the map (trust me a lot of mapmakers have tried this very project) and I hope this remake can live up to its predecessor.
Name: Zone Control ZC
Suggested Players: 4-8 (4 Teams)
Description: Remake of old SC:BW map 'Zone Control'. The map consists of 45 zones which you fight with your enemy to take control of. Every player starts with one Bunker placed in one of these zones. Expand, upgrade and eliminate your foes. Good luck, Commander!
The Bunkers can be upgraded to higher tech structures which unlocks new units and upgrades. Unit upgrades are made in the Forge, Evolution Chamber and Engineering Bay. Here's an example picture of the Evolution Chamber, these upgrades boost different unit types.
I know you guys enjoy my amazing paint skills but here are some random screenshots of actual gameplay: [Screenshot 1] [Screenshot 2] [Screenshot 3] [Screenshot 4] [Screenshot 5] [Screenshot 6]
Apologies for the mass Marines in every picture, trust me when I say there are more units to build. In fact over 20 different units to build by now (the original Starcraft 1 map had only Marines - I got a bit carried away)
How to find the game in Starcraft 2: Arcade -> Browse -> "zone control zc" in search field -> you should see Zone Control ZC in the list to the left.
(the game is best played in 2v2v2v2 or 1v1v1v1. 2v2v2 if you're desperate and anything else you suck as a host)
Anyhow guys I put quite some time into this map and I really hope you take the time to give my map and the Arcade in SC2 a legit chance
In the little testing we did so far we couldn't find any bugs or glitches but please report bugs in this thread if you do find any or send a tweet to @MicroTournament. Any suggestions/opinions are always welcome of course.
The map is only uploaded to Europe server right now cause - you know.. fuck NA, right?
Enjoy!~

MorroW bascially held a gun to my head and forced me to play it, after some playtime the gun wasn't needed anymore.

Oh man, Zone Control is my favorite Arcade map type! Super excited.

Am I stupid or is the map lobby broken? I can't seem to be able to get back into it when I minimize it.

let me know if that helps. i can return to lobby just fine

Yeah it's a rare b.net issue, wouldn't worry about it. A relog should fix it.
|
Relogging did not fix it unfortunately, I am sure it will work itself out. Anyways good map!

Awesome! Someone please remake the BW Godzilla and Evolves maps~

The concept looks pretty fun and all, but that texturing... Morrow would you like some help with it?
/editby re-texturing it to less messy and more pretty textures/tileset
|
Damn i remember this UMS map from SC1...will give it a try this week I can see this map being a good map for involving stream viewers in.
|
Thanks Morrow! I really appreciate your mods and dip on casual stuff.

keep in mind the theme of a "chess board" has to stay. not extremely polarized colors (thats not easy on eye while playing) lastly overall a dark space theme. oh and i almost forgotb- doodads may be pretty but not in the "tiled" theme also it adds load-time and lag which is relevant since most games has 500+ units walking around

heres a pic of the old bw map if that helps

Where the zones change the textures change too sharply and create a little black line, that bothers me (and probably others) to no end Here is what I'm talking about with a close up picture from a file i just opened up.
Also I am a little curious to see what I can come up with aesthetics for a zone control map now!

Personally, I would keep the same grid tileset (the one being used right now) and color inside it with a dark tileset for one opposite a light one for the other, ..no? just do two "squares" and then copy paste, the edges of the "squares" will remain, but that s a worthy challenge requiring solely logic and time: starting on one corner going to center/ opposite corner, you make 4 then copy paste them to get 16, then you copy paste the result etc until you can do pretty much a paste of the whole tileset in one last option p ((patience required ))
|
Obviously just playing around but minimal impact from doodads and slightly less "busy" textures.
|
@Morrow their ist a Hexagon Like Texture that exist in Black and White Theme in different Texture Packs you might could take this once since the boardering always is flawless.
|
Ok, I messed around with some ideas a bit;
It needs more work, specially on maybe using another set of textures to give it more contrast to the clear/dark checker board pattern, but as a mock up it gets the idea along pretty nicely I think.
