A long long time ago, young CJ Hero beat bbyong without making a single forge in a PvT MACRO game. By skipping the forges, Hero was able to get just about every single tech upgrade possible! So by skipping upgrades, protoss players can increase their midgame power by alot. For example,in this replay- http://ggtracker.com/matches/6122654 I have collosus out by: 8:49 I have high templar with storm out by: 13:34
This is insanely fast area of effect splash damage! However, the weakness is that your gateway units are utter !@#$, and that stimmed bio will tear them to shreds if you don't have anything to support them.
My build order is as follows: Standard 1 gate fast expand => second gas => robo tech. Then, before taking the gasses on natural I add 1 gateway then double gas natural. => Robotics bay for collosus When I hit 2 base saturation at 7:50, i cut probes and throw down 4 gateways so that I have 6 gateways and 1 robo. After I start the first collosus, I throw down a twilight council. When twilight council finishes, I start blink, and then throw down a templar archives. Then I research storm, and after storm I research charge.
While this is going on I am making lots of units from my (2) gateways, and go up to full 2 base saturation after getting the gateways and attempt to take my third base at around 10 minutes after the terran attacks me with medivacs.
One weakness I see from this kind of playstyle is that its really weak to anything that lets your opponent snipe your early collosus (stimmed marauders + skill). You really do not want to be spending an extra 200 gas to rebuild a collosus because this slows down charge and storm tech; which you are rushing out.
Also, the gateway units are utter garbage and are merely meat shield since they are pretty much 0/0 for the rest of the game.
However, I see this build having an edge in lategame where you would want to switch to air, since you have not spend any money on upgrades for ground units; and you have your other tech already unlocked.
Is getting no (+1 attack/armor/shield) upgrades viable in a PvT macro Game??

I think it was intentional because, hero was just barely able to afford storm and collosus off of 2 base. He couldn't have afforded both if he had even a single forge (Off of 2 base with 4 gas). This is kinda like a tech cheese.

I always thought this was a response to the map pool and the proneness of Terrans pulling the boys.
I don't think I've ever seen it on the current map pool. It's pretty cool, but you probably end up in trouble if the Terran plays more defensive and goes up to ghost/viking.
In the game Bbyong vs herO, Bbyong takes a couple of bad engagements coupled with some clutch storms and army control from herO. Bbyong manages to get a couple of ghosts out but misses EMP on two Templars and those storms dealt a lot of damage. If he hit those, I think he holds and wins.

This upgradeless tech style might be stronger in midgame, but it's immobile and awkward to move out vs terran once you build the army as its heavily dependent on storm/colossi to do damage. It's akin to an elaborate 2-base all in because your 3rd is so delayed and you have no upgrades. Bbyong lost that game because of 1.) Multiple shit engagements and 2.) Shit map.
It would also die immediately to any sort of fast-expand 3-rax stim timing without medevacs; Bomber's timing would have hit your base as your first colossi pops - you either lose your army or your natural at this point, both are game-ending.
