Digitalz here, I'm a top Diamond 1 / low M3 scrub tier player who managed to get his way into M3 the last 5 seasons consecutively lol.
I decided awhile ago i wanted to try making some videos showcasing myself going through different styles of play based on already established and popular guides found around here or spawningtool and give a general Vlog style take on my experience the good the bad, key adjustments that helped me see success and just giving a general overview on how my gameplay has started to see drastic improvements!
First up was the amazingly fun style of muta ling bane based off PiG's rule of 1 gas guide that REALLY brought back the passion for me in the matchup. I had already seen alot of success with the standard "roach ravager" a move shenanigans and was getting rather bored and feeling something different, something that would not only be more mechanically challenging but allow me a bit more "freedom" in the mid to late game via ling counter attacks and actually establishing a decent muta count to put on some pressure right back on my opponent
Ill start by saying the two play styles (roach rav, vs ling bane) are totally different right down to how you hold pressure to how you take engagements into widowMEME fields, its a breath of fresh air but can be rather frustrating for new comers attempting to see success off the bat with this.
Anyways any feedback is appreciated but try and go easy on me lol, this is my first attempt at this and i plan to do more if people show any general interest!
Few pieces of feedback to consider: -This isn't meant to sound harsh, but can you clarify what the purpose of the video is? You said it's not to share the build order (we can get that off PiG's tutorial), but then you talk through the build at quite a high level without talking much about the timings or scouting or other tips so we don't learn about executing the build at your level of play. What are you wanting your viewers to get out of this, that they won't get from PiG's video? You mention the PiG 'rule of 1 gas' build, but don't say what that rule is, or link to it. Are you just trying to highlight the importance of the macro hatch? If so, keep it really focused to that - the difference between the two games in the 2-3 minute window after the macro hatch does / doesn't go down, and run through the rest really fast. -I actually don't think you lost the first game because of the late macro hatch. I think you fell very far behind from losing the third base drone, and then losing 3 queens and all your lings to the 5 min push, and not droning up - he was ahead of you on workers at 5:30. These things don't happen in game 2. At 5:45, in G2 you have 51 workers compared with 37 in G1 - this massive difference in economy is way before the macro hatch has any effect on the game. -You should focus on advice for your viewers, rather than sharing pride/shame in what you did in one really specific engagement. Examples: Super slow mo on your widow mine dodges (instead, advise the approach of how to set off widow mines effectively by dragging just a handful of ling/bane into the mines and trying to split odd lings off if you can, and then show them your clip which shows it in action, talking about what you're doing with your mouse during that time). You talked for ages about your poor drone micro against the reaper in game 1 at the third (instead, advise how to generally avoid the reaper delaying you if it's camping your third.). You berated yourself for a while about your queens marching off creep in G2 after the 5 min push. OK we shouldn't do that but it happens sometimes - we know that. Focus on supporting viewer learning, not talking us through your personal experience of single incidents. -You said hiding the drone at the third after pulling off gas was 99.9% effective at taking the 3rd at 3:00, then it wasn't effective in that very first game you showed us. Don't most terrans at that level take the reaper to camp your third after the initial scout/poke? If the reaper had been sat on the centre of your third you wouldn't have been able to take it until ling speed finished unless he wasn't paying attention, or you were lucky with micro and sacrificed most of your slow lings. Pros try and sneak a couple lings to the terran's base so the reaper has to go home before the marines start pumping out. -In game 2 you take a second macro hatch at 6.30 - that is the time you should be taking your 4th. If you need a second macro hatch build it after the 4th.
One of the most useful things you said in G2 was "I keep building queens to spread creep between my bases and up from my 3rd, and then use them to target medivacs during the fight - normally they drop you near your third here so you want vision of that coming in, or sometimes in your main here". This tells your viewers what you're doing AND WHY. This is useful analysis. Even better would be to add that you want an overlord to get vision in the airspace near the main base drop point to see that coming in too (e.g. queue your 4th overlord there), or saying that you keep your lings in the middle so you can go either way if you don't see the medivacs coming in - if you do see them, get your queens and lings to try and intercept them before they unload, as you managed to do that game.
WOW first off thank you for taking the time to post this well written constructive feedback it is VERY much appreciated, i have gathered alot of feedback already along the same lines as what you said and im planning MASSIVE improvements moving forward for how i come across delivering a message.
The general idea was more or less a vlog / standpoint and as for pigs video i will link it on this post, on the youtube page itself i had linked to pigs original guide! (will add it to this post too)
The first game had a bunch of issues, it was also the first game of the day and sadly a bad example, as for the reaper at the third base most players my level keep the reaper along the path and not quite ONTOP of the 3rd hatch location because they expect to see you pull a drone WITH your lings to shew the reaper away then u pull lings back towards your natural and BAM that drone thats hiding by the third gets to take the base uncontested and u can honestly do this without losing any lings or very minmal and because you invest into THREE sets of lings, once speed is finished u got a small handful left to claim watch towers and see drops coming or poke the front for scouting info.
I will argue tooth and nail about the macro hatch costing me the game, even if i lose drones if i had the larvae i would be golden as u can tell i start floating 1k + minerals that i just CANNOT spend for the life of me because the larvae is just not there but ya i made other mistakes aswell
the problem with taking the 4th base in this situation i find is terran can pressure you easily and if they kill it well, you wont be able to spend money all that well, generally you can play MLB with 66 workers and the 4th becomes icing on the cake once u hold like 2 waves of Terran aggression from my standpoint.
most players when executing this build will have alot more money than they know what to do with and believe me taking the 4th is not a problem, YOU WILL HAVE MONEY lol however taking it super early could be detrimental as u need larvae for units on defence and for giant 2-2 ling run bys that just CRIPPLE your opponent and tests their multi tasking with the mutalisk followup so far (from my experience)
the slow mo with the widow mine dodging is great advice and if i could redue this basically i wouldn't take 14 minutes to highlight the importance of those macro hatch timings lol.
