Sign ups for the tournament will be taken up until the tournament qualifying rounds begin. The tournament itself will be held inside the gaming plaza starting at 7 PM on August 14th and at Noon on August 15th. There are a limited number of seats and it is encouraged that competitors sign up as soon as possible.
Guests are welcome and encouraged to spectate the event. There will be a number of announcers and a huge screen to watch the games as they are performed live!
Bringing a computer is not required for the tournament but recommended if you wish to practice on site or participate in the on-going LAN PARTY.

Is the convention worth the price? I would answer with a resounding YES. Anime Evolution is a massive geek/gaming convention, and I can say that alongside the Starcraft Tournament, the rest of the convention is very enjoyable if you decide to attend. Lots of hot chicks in cosplay, industry panels, live bands and comedy shows, even a 4chan panel if you're into that.
Nintu, one of our quarter finalists of 2009 from Team Liquid wrote up a blog post of his experiences from last year if you want to get a glimpse of what the convention is about first hand: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=95403

I went to the anime evolution last year just for the tournament. I went with my gf, and we did look around and took photos with people who dressed up as a spartan warrior in 300, HALO suit, and a bunch of anime characters. I think I saw an old dude dressed up as that turtle master in dragonball. Overall, it was a great experience.
I honestly don't think you gotta be a geek or nerd to enjoy this kind of thing. If you are a sc2 fan, you obviously need to go :D They had a huge screen projector to commentate the games and there were just so many people watching it. It was a mini OSL
what kind of costume would u recommend stalife?
obviously a marine suit will get you all the attention + fame
I'm dressing up as Kerrigan TEE HEE.
Cedstick is our dedicated film man for this event. Glad to have him on board! Event footage should be great this year.
And hell yes, for those interested in coming in a Marine suit, power to you!
SC:BW or SCII? Post never really clarified...
SCII, i'll clarify that now.
Oh sweet, we won't have to bring our own computers anymore? How'd you guys secure computers to use (whose are they?).
Also, question, so we have to pay the entrance fee for the convention itself (yes/no)?
On July 26 2010 18:57 eScaper-tsunami wrote: SC:BW or SCII? Post never really clarified... Just take a look at which forum the post is in.
looks like fun may have to fly over and watch some Starcraft
I unfortunately will be out of town for this year's event, so I won't be able to crush some nerds. I highly suggest anyone that can make it go out to this event, it's a lot of fun, and has some great starcraft to boot.
I signed up at the website and was wondering we just need to show up at the convention to be verified? I'll probably just hang around the building where the tournament is held .. and it would suck if I can't take part in it.. don't have any friends to enjoy the cosplaying with
Philar, if you're going to the convention anyway, you might as well sign-up for the tournament -- computers are only needed if you want to practice or play at any time, but the tournament spots themselves have designated computers. Also, I'll nerd out with you Not dressing-up, though haha
How much do I need to pay just for the tournament?
@Entropic: We have enough computers for the competition, but we are always looking for more. A drop-in LAN is the best type for this sort of convention. You're of course welcome to bring your own as we'll have the facilities for it.
@Entropic/AcidiC_ca: The tournament is part of the convention, so you will need a convention pass.
@Philar: The tournament is live and on site at the convention, so you will need to be there.
What happens if there are less/more than 64 players sign up? How are the players picked anyway? Any kind of preliminaries?
after signing up on the web page should we expect to receive any kind of verification that we have signed up? If so what should it look like?
@eScaper-tsunami: We had no trouble filling the remainder of the 32 slots on-site last year and should have a full 64 competitors this year. Anyone is welcome to sign up if they feel they are up to competing, although we really like TL users If there are more than 64 signups before the event, I will make sure people are notified in advance.
@FleuR: You should have received an email from the LAN Party EH bot. If you want to make 100% sure, feel free to PM me with your email and I can check it against our database.
Please remove NeodyM, as he has to work the weekend of the LAN now. I'm his brother; message him and he can vouch for that. He's just too lazy to update you guys himself, so I thought I'd let you know to free a slot up
Stalife if I go will you be there?
we can play some FPM
Yeah I'll be going to this event. I'll see you at the event hopefully :D and we can definitely play some FPM if I can get a computer to run sc.. lol
IMPORTANT UPDATES
Tournament time has been changed: Qualifiers: 7 PM. Saturday, August 14th. Finals: Noon. Sunday, August 15th.
We've got 30 players from TL.net signed up so far!
@Cedstick: "NeodyM" isn't signed up with us currently.
Is there anybody on campus at UBC that is registered for this tourney? Please add me on battle.net for a practice partner: gadwin1929@gmail.com
I just registered for this tourney as well. Should be fun and I'm glad it's on campus!
Updated first post with list of approved maps. Prize pool information coming sometime this week as we're still finding and talking with sponsors.
nice nice, i like the new times ;P but blah i have to stay at the hostel if i go T_T
Didn't some people offer-up a place to stay around UBC? Look through the old thread I made, see if you can get in contact with whoever it was.
Damn I was REALLY pumped to do a hometown tourny and confident I could get into the finals, but the at door tickets of $60 are a little pricey If possible some earlier warning would have been nice for those of us on shoestring budgets.
Wow, I really wish I wasn't on vacation now =/ A drive up from Seattle would be pretty fun.
Hoping to get into the finals to face Viral Rush i need my revenge u beat me in quick match once.... im coming to play u viral be ready :p
Drewbie, if you come down you can chill with me if you'd like and not at a fricken hostel. Except I don't live DT, but in Burnaby/Coquitlam. It isnt too difficult of a trip.
Im a live programming staff for this event, still don't know what EXACTLY I am going to be doing.

the official schedule says that the saturday starcraft tournament is at 11am - 2:30pm, not 7pm?
http://www.animeevolution.com/main/wp-content/uploads/schedule/AE2010_gaming_schedule.pdf
is there any way to pay for just the tournament, for those of us not into anime?
also, if i'm not going to make it into finals, should i just buy a pass for saturday? is anything else starcraft-related happening on sunday besides observing the final matches between the gosu players?
virgozero -- I thought Gnatinator PM'd you. I guess not. Either way, yea, I'm joking lol.
Ignore the Anime Evolution site for the Starcraft schedule, and listen only to Gnatinator, as it's under his full control.
Damn this looks like fun. I was going to skip anime evolution this year but now I might go! Still room in the tournament? Gotta brush up on my 1v1 skills >< If anyone wants to practice 1v1s PM me.
edit: plat or diamond leaguers thnx

This looks really fun =D Dude, did you see the pics on the L2SC site? The pic of all the raffle winners is hilarious. You're like, "CAREFOOT IS NOT AMUSED."
There really needs to be a prize posting. With only a few days left before the tournament with no prize in sight is a bit iffy. I am not certain I want to cough up potentially two days of my weekend and $60+ if there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Sounds a like a good event, I also agree with acidic would be nice to see a prize pool.
Hey all, I don't want to keep you in the dark. I am literally finding out either tonight or tomorrow exactly what we're getting for prizes.
Being a hardcore gamer myself I completely understand the concern and finding out what we're giving away is my personal #1 priority at the moment in terms of this event.
@adrenaline.CA: The current AE schedule is wrong. Our site is correct. There will be a corrections section in the convention pamphlet.
Unfortunately one needs to attend the convention in order to play. Single day passes aren't really worth it if you're going for more than one day. That said, we will be streaming matches live on USTREAM for those not at the convention and interested in observing.
@Lusiphur: Sounds good! There's still about 10 seats untouched. Feel free to pre-register on the event website.
@BC.WeaPonX: Dude. After the car accident, I ended up going to a friends Starcraft party to watch the L3 matches live and we were all rolling on the ground laughing at all of the weird cheese plays you were pulling off. Funniest thing i've ever seen.

That moment I tried my very hardest to look like Idrosis and it was a huge success, I look like such a badass.
I think WeaponX is more then ready to play. But if you dont wanna so I can get a seat that would be great
I hope I can get a spot lol
how early should i show up to guarantee a spot?
Quick sponsorship update.
Short: We have about $500 worth of hardware guaranteed, with possibly more as of tomorrow.
Long: The issue is that we had sponsorship communication delegated to someone this year and they did an absolute horrible job of it. In retrospect I should have handled it personally. It was my decision to delegate it and I very much regret doing so.
We currently do have a small portion of what we gave away last year, and I will be talking with A-Power to hopefully get this whole mess sorted out in the morning.
We'll do our best to rectify the situation. However, if some of you wish to drop out of the tournament because of this issue, it's totally understandable.
Updates tomorrow morning.

support the local SC2 scene regardless of prizes!
go out and have fun with your fellow SC2 buddies
On August 13 2010 14:04 Kill-9 wrote:support the local SC2 scene regardless of prizes! go out and have fun with your fellow SC2 buddies Definitely I can totally understand some peoples' waryness because of the AE admission fee, but at the same time, there's no guarantee these people will win it back, anyway
Yeah but for 60 bucks and two days. It might not be worth it.. I dont want to sound harsh or anything, but having to pay that much is >.>.
*for the amount of prizes for cost*
Thanks for your hard work gnat, cant forget to mention that.
is there going to be a lan party today or is it just going to be a convention tomorrow?
Tomorrow at 7:30pm and Sunday at 12pm.
lan playing not just tournament.
Oh, the LAN will be tomorrow and the next day. Not sure of the exact time everything will be ready to go, but we're heading out to start setting up this afternoon. Likely it'll be open for participant connection (as in you setting up your computer or whatever else) a few hours before the tournament tomorrow. I'll let Gnat give the answer, though it won't be until tonight or tomorrow morning, as he's been busy and is already on his way out there right now.
The LAN party will be running all convention. Feel free to just show up and have a game.
Sponsor Update: A company rep will be visiting the event before a final decision is made to boost sponsorship. Should have a decent grand prize or two if it does get boosted. SO be sure to come by and show your support at the LAN room around 3-6 PM!
I will personally be arriving at the convention at around 3-4 PM.
Ok, so maybe he was just about to leave. Or maybe he is an amazing Blackberry texter.
Any updates?
okay on friday the lan room was pretty epic fail.
It was down for pretty much the entire day until 8pm. At 8 when people finally got in they still haven't set up the steam games on the computers yet(makes you wonder what they've been doing the entire time, does it really take that many hours to plug in some cables?) Most of us just hung around for the jokes and youtube vids but eventually people left and even I left at around 9:30-10ish. I am curious to hear how the l4d tournament went haha.
@virgozero: There were complications with power early on in the day that were out of my hands. Rest assured, the Starcraft 2 Tournament will continue as planned!
The SC2 tourney should be fine. They pin-pointed the last problem and were fixing it as I left, so no worries.
Virgo, who were you? Did I meet you? Tall dude with the flanel shirt playing with the tripod, here.
So where is the Student Union building? It even says it "might" be there in the FAQ. I've never been to UBC so I hope I don't get lost.

hey whos drewbie? I really wanna meet him !!! Im virgo the asian kid in white Im at one of the computers by the back right corner atm ^_^ just won , my opponent seemed pretty new to the game.
i wanna swing by campus tomorrow and check out the last day of the tournament do you guys know what time it'll start?
Finals are tomorrow starting at noon!
Tournament is well organized and the LAN room is great.
As a note to future metro Vancouver tournament organizers, perhaps you should record a history of metro Vancouver tournament results (just the top 3 players of each tournament) and seed the top players in your future tournaments. Because Starcraft 2 is pretty new and there have been few tournaments in metro Vancouver since the release, there isn't much history of tournament results thus far and it's impossible for the AE organizers to determine how to seed the top players. But once the best players are known from tournament results, I think a seeding system can ensure that the best players don't face each other until later rounds in future metro Vancouver tournaments.

Im prob gonna get knocked out soon though because firezerg, stallone, drewbie, and another guy who was also quite high ranked in diamond are pretty damn scary :/

that "badguy" is actually pretty good, hes massed quite a few games on his account, friend told me about 300 something.
drewbie still dominated him though. It is quite obvious drewbie was on a different level than the players there.
Except for FireZerg who was actually very high ranked in diamond, ranked 12th i believe, hes ane xcellent zerg. Although he lost to drewbie in the semi-s he played very well. Drewbie even commended firezerg's first game for throwing drewbie off completely.
But ya he lost and got angry @ TvZ balance lol

Just wanted to thank Gnat, Justin, and the rest of the gang for putting on an excellent tourney, had tons of fun playing and spectating an entire weekend of SC2!

yeah i think firezerg, whos ranked top 100 globally, losing to badguy may be a bit indicative of TvZ imbalance.. i didnt see the game though, of course, it was a shame the stream wasnt running

Thanks to Gnat, Justin, and everyone else who helped organize this great event! I got knocked out pretty early, but the tournament itself was great ! I enjoyed it and I look forward to next year !
@adrenaline badguy is protoss, firezerg knocked him out to loser brackets, where he beat me 2-0, then moved onto beat firezerg I guess. (I left early to play ESL , but was too late to play and got DQ'ed.. lol)
Congrats to Drewbie :D
they said they weren't doing loser brackets because of time contraints yesterday, agh. i should have came today at least, then..
edit: ignore what i said about TvZ imba since hes protoss
someone pleasseeee update the brackets/post replays/all that jazz
was fun, look forward to seeing you all next year hopefully!
Who's this Badguy, beating Stalife? Haha. That's awesome. Who beat you in the first place to put you in the loser bracket?
badguy is a wc3 player, he didn't play during the beta, but he has been massgaming since the release. and ummm yeah hes a cheeser ;D and pwned stalife LOL<3 anyway hes really nice and i think he will do good in the future ;P ( i was sitting next to him during the lan and he was using a 5$ logitech mouse and didnt have any sound the whole tournament )
Ya a wild card showed everyone (cept for drewbie) up! thats awesome!
Go BadGuy go! =D

I'm told AcidiC got his revenge on Stalife. I think we have a rivalry here, folks.

Final brackets!
Finally home. Updates tomorrow. Lots of good footage and photography this year. Glad the event was well received by the community!
Some seriously intense games. My personal favorite series of the tournament was Firezerg vs Drewbie; although all of the casts on the second day were very well played. Happy we did a form of double elimination.. taking into account time and technical constraints.
Thank you to all of the players, guest commentators, A-Power and of course all of the viewers!
Random fact: Drewbie did not lose a single game in this tournament.. which I find insane and very impressive.
LOL @ badguy story that drewbie posted. Badguy sure seems up and coming. And I was in total shock to see Stalife go down that early.
Lots of fun with great casting and a crowd. Some cool upsets that day with some new names. Good to see. Grats to Drewbie and Badguy.
Did FireZerg finish 3rd? I thought he was playing so well thta day, but the ZvT matchup is far too difficult. Baneling, Ultra, and Infestor. Some of the coolest Zerg play I have seen in awhile. He will only get better.
Awesome! Chronopolis did incredibly well too. But definitely badguy was the major wildcard! What was the result of the badguy vs firezerg semi-final??
