Registration + Show Spoiler +
**It is important that you register as soon as possible so that we can work out logistics. We must acquire internet access for each participant and secure enough equipment to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible.
Monetary Information: + Show Spoiler +Please note that Texas e-Sports Association does not intend to profit from the registration fees. Your entry fees go directly into the prize pool and paying for event logistics (equipment rental, wireless infrastructure, internet access for guests, entertainment, security). If any profits are obtained (after all things previously mentioned are accounted for), TeSPA will donate a percentage to a local charitable organization and put the rest into further tournament sponsorship. This being our first event, we want to be sure that we can break even.

you should announce the "huge prize pool"

On October 26 2010 11:40 Xeris wrote: you should announce the "huge prize pool" Its based on how many people come. We already have ~40 people on the UT campus who have said they want to come, so it should be decent.

Since this is our first tournament, we can't offer a number yet. When we get closer to time, we'll update with the 'minimum' pools based on current sign-ups. I can, however, say that we have a ton of confirmed interest so we'll be able to offer a significant pool. We plan to make the prize pool as high as possible after repaying all of our expenses. For future tournaments, we'll be able to give better estimates!
|
Yeah announce this huge prize pool, also what do you mean you strongly recommend bringing our computer? just in case the computers in UT are slow? or because there's a chance they won't have enough computers for everyone?
|
Ya i have a question about the comps too. If i bring mine is someone else going to be using it and break it =.=
|
Nice work guys, Im probably going back Austin for thanksgiving, I'll do some spectating and catch up with yall.
Haven't seen IndecisivePenguin in awhile, hope your freshman year at UT going well so far.

We're doing this is an area without a lab. We couldn't convince ITS to let us install SC2 on a network. Regardless, we're having TeSPA members bring in computers to use. No promises how they will run the game (or how many will be free), but we'll try to accomodate people who can't bring their own. To ensure high quality, timeliness, and familiarity, we recommend you bring your own. We'll have security handled. If you don't want anyone playing on your machine, we'll try working something out.

Since we will be monitoring the room, people will be held responsible for any damages. I don't think there will be any problems, though.

Why thank you, good sir! It is going appropriately busy-like.
As for prize pool, we are a student organization so it can't be ridiculous numbers, but we're going to try to maximize it as much as we can. It's very dependent on the number of people that sign up.

This is really sweet. I live in south Austin and should show up, but I am going to wait a little closers to that date to register. When do you close registration or will you allow ppl to show up that day?

Count me in, I'll try and bring a few in from the San Marcos area.

Hmm, I'll make my best attempt to make it down to this tournament. Is it possible to pay at the tournament? Or at least some sort of refund in the event that I cannot attend?
EDIT: Also, anyone in the Plano area, I would be driving down in my car, so I'm willing to carpool at this point in time. However, I may have plans staying in Austin for the weekend so I'm throwing that out there for now.

I attend UTSA will register sometime tomorrow this sounds great.

I'm here at UT. Hell yeah I'm gonna participate.
edit: Where's the tourney gonna be on campus (what building)?
edit2: I'm surprised by how many 1,500+ diamonds there are at UT! (http://sc2ranks.com/c/238/university-of-texas)

Hey cHaNg-sTa! I think it depends if you plan on playing or spectating. If you want to spectate, I don't think there would be a lot of trouble in you paying at the door. You would just have to let us know that you're coming.
If you plan on playing, I'd say TRY to figure out by next week if you can go. If something comes up or you can't make it because of transportation, etc then I'm sure we don't mind refunding you. It just becomes difficult to set up a bracket and then have players drop out. xP

We would highly prefer you prepay so that we can confirm your registration and provide the best experience possible. Do any of you friends have a credit card? PayPal is simple to set up. If someone you know can pay in advance online and you pay them in cash, would that work? I'd you really cant figure it out after checking pm me in a few days and we will work something out.

You should definitely come! Where are you stationed?

Where exactly is the tournament held? I couldn't find it on the OP (unless a location hasn't been finalized yet).
I was looking at the schedule and I understand that it was made as a general idea pending volume of people, but it's always nice to just get the next round moving asap (I've been to and hosted many Melee tournaments in the past and time is always an issue). Where do you expect to cut off number between single and double elimination?

If its only RO32, we will have double elimination.

Sounds like fun, I've donated my $$ to this event and expect to be stomped in the first round.
I'm just another Gold player that likes to watch streams more than practice playing.
BTW I'm planning to drive up from Austin to watch MLG Dallas, are any of you guys going? I can offer a ride to poor college students without cars.

Spectator pass is $25. I'm considering going Sunday only and then hotel wouldn't be necessary. Sunday games go from 10am-5pm, that's a very doable day-trip and would still be a lot of matches to watch.

Good to hear! If you're interested in coordinating with any of us from UT who are going to MLG, check out this link on our TeSPA forums. We're probably going to meet up in person at the event on multiple occasions, including a dinner that anyone is welcome to come to to discuss TeSPA tournament details and whatever else. We'll be announcing more details about this when we solidify plans.
|
We'll be sending out e-mails to those who have registered and not yet paid each Wednesday and Saturday as a reminder. Try to finish sign-up and payment by the weekend of Nov. 6th if possible, and if you have any special circumstances, do not hesitate to contact either myself, or any of the other listed officers.
Thank you to all who have shown interest so far. We are looking forward to this event.

Yes.

Slight update:
As long as you are a spectator, you have the option of paying at the door if necessary. The reason this is discouraged is because we would ideally like a good count of people while we set everything up, to ensure the best possible experience for both spectators and players. However, purchasing a spectator pass at the door will likely not ensure lunch, so if you need a provided lunch, it would be best to pay sooner rather than later.
If you are a player, you must pre-pay and reserve your spot. No walk-in players will be accepted, as bracketing and overall preparation will be very taxing on our officers. If you have any special circumstances, please be sure to contact one of us! We can be reasonable, so do not be shy.
Thanks to everyone who's signed up so far! Be sure to bring your friends along too. :D

signed up, payment will be coming as soon as paypal takes money from my bank account.
UH Fighting!
|
Debating driving down there lol... I have a lot of old friends from high school that went down to UT, and I am still in Dallas. Hmmm....
|
I have a few suggestions to side events.
Being a single elimination, there will be a ton of down time for the first round losers. I'm sure those of you who have played in one understand how sucky it is to be eliminated after one series. At least ine a double elimination tournament, you have a chance to bounce back.
I think if the 64 man bracket is filled, there can be the day9 inspired monobattles for the losers competing for whatever side prize you are giving away. 32 losers in the first round -> an 8 4-player team monobattles tournament. I'd imagine the skill level would be similar for the players eliminated too lol. 2nd round losers can do the same and such.
|
Looks like a fun tournament, too bad it's too far away. Hopefully some more good tourney's show up in Dallas soon.
|
Who wants to be my sponsor for a "college visit" cough cough sc2 tourny cough cough? I think my throat is cleared now.

Just signed up and paid, can't wait!

I think I might come... I'm not sure if I'm busy on that day. I lost my calendar so my schedule for all of November is gone! If I'm not doing a bigger tournament online or something then I'll probably make it.

Nony fighting!
Hope you make it!

As an update, please register by Friday morning if you are a non-UT student so that we can acquire internet access for you. If this isn't possible, we will try to have solutions, but it would help us a ton if you signed up by this deadline. Thanks!

Oh flux- i got a question, I originally said when i registered I was going to bring my comp.. But my comp has started flaking out and lags now so would it be best to not bring it and who should I notify? For reference 200/200 battles are un-microable on this computer.

So... TeSpa?
Looking past the name, I support all things eSport-related, gl hf to all participants.

Update: I'd like to send a huge thanks to mLgaming for sponsoring us and this tournament! We absolutely appreciate their support. Be sure to check them out at http://www.ml-gaming.net/!

Very intersting. I know I'll be goig to SLC around that date. If im still in ATX I will sign up for sure. I'll find out early next week.
Note: this looks like it's growing fast, will there be room to accommodate this many people?

We are capping attendance for participants at 64 due to logistical concerns. Future tournaments will have this taken care of, but for now we feel this is the best plan. There will be plenty of room for spectators. If you are going to sign up, be fast! We have less than 10 spots remaining. The first 64 to register and pay will have priority.

Registered, I found out I fly out Monday after. Course my league/rating isn't 1500 diamond but my mmr must be around that of a 1400 player is because i've been playing 1300-1600 diamonds all week.

Also, everyone if you have payed MAKE SURE TO REGISTER AT TINYURL.COM/TESPA!
If you have registered there MAKE SURE TO PAY! We've had a few people only pay, and its hard to hold a spot for you when we don't have any of your info (though we of course will).

Finally did my sign up and registration. Never used paypal but they said you'll get the money in 3-5 days unless I somehow clean my bank acount out in that time. All the A&M guys should be registered by the end of today too. Looking forward to the weekend.
|
Juffalo, could you ask Megalisk to send me his email address? He forgot the "@_____.com " part on his registration form. Thanks!

looks cool, i registered and payed up, even tho im not quite college age T.T lol

Have we announced the prize pool? Seems that this tournament will obviously fill to 64.
|
Stoids stop being a greedy chobo...do i really have to rape you again?
|
We will likely announce the prize pool this weekend. We are still in negotiations with ITS regarding the purchase price of nternet access for guests and network setup costs. As soon as we know our full expenses, the prize pool will be made public. Sorry for the delay, but we'd rather have one announcement that is accurate than an approximate or incorrect one.

No confirmation emails sent out for registered players ? Also would it be possible to get a preview of the player line-up after the registration ends?
|
Absolutely. We will be sending out a series of updates to registered players over the course of the next couple days. Expect the first email this evening. As soon as we are full a player list will be announced.

Payment via PayPal is the best route. If you absolutely positively cannot get this set up, email us and we'll talk.
|
i will register later tonight...are there still spots left?
|
I think I will try and go to this event since Austin is in my back yard. It'll be really cool
|
As a note to everyone, we have ONE spot left (63/64 players are registered). HOWEVER, there are still a few players who have not paid. We will be contacting those players who have not paid and if we do not have payment by Sunday, will open spots to new registrants.
If you have registered but not paid, please do so as soon as possible. If PayPal does not work for you, contact Adam, Tyler, Jacob, or Jason as soon as possible. Our e-mails are on the original post.
I'm enthused to see this much interest and am looking forward to an exciting tournament! It should be a ton of fun. Remember, there are spectator spots available if you want to come but missed the registration deadline. You *can* pay the day of, but it is highly recommended you sign up through player registration so that we can send you updates about parking and tournament logistics next week.

I just checked and you're definitely signed up. It's a Google form, so you are put on our list as soon as you fill out the form.
We'll be sending out an e-mail as soon as we sort through the list and sort out who has paid and who has not. Currently, you've missed nothing.
|
Registration is now CLOSED, however, if you would like to compete please fill out the registration form and we will contact you if anyone drops out/doesn't pay/explodes. Thank you very much for the interest!
Expect an email about the event sent out later tonight!
Edit: If the players with the following SC2 names could PM me their Email, that would be lovely (you guys put your last names in the email spots )
Kilgore, Wootasaurus, TheFallen.
Also, would anyone who took advantage of the Blizzard free name change please PM me.
Thank you!

Are you guys gonna use the rating we submitted as seeding? Because I'm sure there will be a slight discrepancy of someone who registered now as opposed to like a month ago =P

You are correct zap, I should be sent out tonight. Classes are killing me atm

The following people did not include e-mail addresses and need to PM me immediately.
Peter Jeon (UT) Sean Thornton (Texas State)

Two emails went out tonight, one informing you of your registration status, and one that contains info about the event. If you did not receive these, please notify me.
|
To expand upon what Jacob said, I want to reiterate that we will be accepting the first 64 players to register and pay. Even though we officially have 64 signed up, we still have a handful of people who have not paid yet . In order to fully secure your spot, you must complete both the form and the payment. Otherwise, you risk losing your seat.
|
I sent an email back in response, but just to be safe, I'm posting here too-- I got a non-payment email, my battlenet id is Cosimo.654. I did pay, on the 8th via paypal, please let me know if you can't find proof of it, I emailed details of the receipt earlier today.
|
Cosimorondo, did you get a response from Jason yet?
|
|
i would love to go but sadly i'm stuck in the awful state of arizona good luck guys!
|
Can I just stop by to watch the finals or something for free or do I still need to pay the spectator fee? What building and room is this?
|
Thanks iNkA! We're very excited about how well everything is coming together.
The event will be in ACA 1.104. Check-in begins at 9:00 (the earlier players wish to check in, the more 'in-house' warm-up time they will have) and the event will begin officially at 10:00am. If you want to come, you will have to pay the spectator fee, but it can be paid at the door. We will be posting the exact schedule and more specific information about the other awesome events happening throughout the day as soon as it is finalized (Wednesday at the latest).

Hmm, just noticed this thread, ironically I will be in Austin this weekend for ALX. I could probably fit in a starcraft 2 tournament on Saturday between dances though from what I read about it sounds like its probably full and I'm not sure I want my computer to sit in my car all weekend
If I just brought my mouse, keyboard and headset and swung by to see if there was room would that work? I am 1600 level Diamond random player. I guess either way the preffered method is to register online?

We much prefer that you register online, especially because you cannot play if we are completely filled up. However, we are accepting pay-at-the-door spectators and if we are short someone, we could work something out I'm sure.

I checked again, looks like this should fit in with my schedule though still not thrilled about carrying my computer around all weekend in my car I guess I can do it. I registered, is it possible to pay via debit card online? I've been resisting getting an actual pay pal account for years now and would prefer to continue to do so.

This tournament will be single elimination because of timing and space concerns. However, we are planning to have future tournaments be double elimination once we have gained some experience with the process. If you are eliminated though, there will still be lots to do! We will have Starcraft-related contests happening daily, live-casting each round, and a 'break area' with random competitive console games.

Click here for parking information and maps. If you ordered a parking pass, call me Saturday morning so we can get it to you when you arrive.
|
For those who don't wanna pay parking and wouldn't mind walking just a little, north campus has a lot of area that usually is open to parking during the day. I've lived in north campus the previous two years and there's several places on 32nd street and north of it that doesn't have a "residential parking" sign that they decided to add a lot this year for some reason. But I've been back to Austin about a month ago and that's where I always park. Still, park at own risk! =X
Star = Location
Plus you can look a little west to that block as well.

I think I would rather pay for parking than walk a mile carrying my computer but that's just me :D. How much is parking near that building?

Perhaps. We're still editing in names, character names, and code numbers. We are also integrating our brackets with specific seating arrangements, so want to make sure we have all of the details set before announcing.

They should be up tonight (unless something happens). They'd be up sooner but I have a test in 3.5 hours and thats stealing my attention from the more important task of the brackets XD.
Edit: While the brackets ARE done, they will likely not be posted until the day of the tournament.

Parking on campus might very well be crazy since it's a game day, I guess it depends on when you get there. I think I may try that area north of campus. Is it guaranteed that we'll be able to pay at the door to spectate? Just wondering if the place might fill up

My plan was to just drive up near the building and just unload the computer and then go find parking.

Wait.. so its possible to setup your computer tonight if your already in town so you don't have to drag it over and set it up in the morning? If so that would be excellent, hopefully someone replies on this before I head out to Austin this evening--I could also pay that registration fee tonight if people are around setting up. How long will ya'll be setting up? I will be over at the Fed nearby dancing but could probably take a short break to get my computer somewhere secure and out of my car for the evening :D.

ONLY ONE DAY AWAY SWEET
sorry :3
|
Final update: The tournament is tomorrow in the ACA building on the UT campus! As a reminder, check-in lasts between 9:00 and 10:00am. The official tournament will last from 10:00am to approximately 8:00 pm with an hour-long lunch break at 1:00pm. At 10:00am, our opening ceremonies will start - be sure not to miss them! Also, during lunch, we will be conducting live interviews with Nony and ZpuX with questions from the audience.
Throughout the day, we will be having game-related trivia contests. We will also have an arcade style game set up here players throughout the day can compete for top points. After our lunch interview, we will have a unit impersonation contest which should prove to be filled with fun and laughter. In addition, console game stations will be set up all day when you need a break from the action.
And of course, live casting during each round will be happening ALL DAY! Be sure that you make it out - you do not want to miss this tournament! The player's bracket is full, but spectator passes are available at the door for $5. Parking may be hard to find later in the day because of the afternoon football game, so I highly suggest that if you are coming to spectate, you make it here early.
Feel free to PM or e-mail (AdamRosen75@gmail.com) me if you have any last minute questions that urgently need answers. To the players: best of luck! To everyone else: we all hope to see you there to cheer on your favorites and to participate in our other festivities.

good luck hope the event runs smoooooth, sounds like its good to go, gl to all players

Well it was fun, aside from the 50 minutes walking around campus carrying a box with my computer stuff in it, my computer and my moniter. Next time I am definitely getting a phone number to call...I was sure it was at the JGB building as per this post:
Jacobs Ladder United States. October 27 2010 04:37. Posts 356 It will be held in the JGB building. I expect the tournament will be single elimination if we have a RO64 or higher. If its only RO32, we will have double elimination.
So yea, I parked accordingly and walked around the wrong area a bit...finally called a friend to look it up and found it at least. The only other mention of the location was a map with it starred which I could not read but assumed was the location previously mentioned. So yea in the future hopefully TESPA will actually post the location in the thread. Luckily they did finally put a room # on with a picture of a poster advertising the tournament. Anyway on the plus side UT's campus isn't quite as confusing now. Oh yea, and the fact that it was gameday I couldn't seem to find any way to drive near the building to drop my stuff off. But I was apparently on the wrong side of campus.
My match went well, I went in not having played 1vs1 in a few days and having come off 9 hours of swing dancing and lack of sleep the night before. First game on Metalopolis I took it in a mostly macro game as we almost base traded but I had 3 more hatches up and got out the units needed to take the game after staying way ahead economically. I was fairly happy since I was matched against a 1900 diamond level terran (I am a 1600 Random).
Match #2 (He picked Lost Temple) - Bunker block managed to get my expansion and he went into banshees and heavy pressure eventually taking the game. Random still refuses to give me a race other than zerg.
Match #3 (Jungle Basin) So on match #3 I got to pick and went with Jungle Basin since it was one of the first maps he eliminated and I really like playing Terran and Protoss on it and zerg is ok....so I figured I should be good. Game started and I got Zerg again... so already bad start. I tried early roach pressure but he scanned at just the right timing to see my roaches pop out and was able to get his bunker up. I then broke the back door but couldn't push because of a bunker again. He then got banshees in and owned me as I didn't have enough queens or creep spread. Ah well, overall it was fun. Not sure how high rated other players are but looks like I had a tought draw with another 1900+ diamond terran waiting if I won. Wish I had a chance to play Protoss or Terran...one thing that sucks about random I guess. Maybe I should have picked a race for the last match. Anyways it was fun, $22 dollars and some time taken up that I had free between my other event.
I am curious on the random seeding if any non-diamond players got paired up against each other or not. I know the guy behind me was playing a Platinum level player but for the most part it seems to be diamond level players here.
Anyway in retrospect I wish I had moved my overlord in correctly to scout the banshees and I wish blizzard's random gave more variety...it seems to like giving you zerg a ton on the ladder as well---oh well.
Edit: Other than that my 2-1 loss still shows as a 2-0 on the tournament bracket...apparently all the other first round games went 2-0 so they just put 2-0 on mine. Ah well :-/.

Wow i just heard about this tournament when your treasury officer talked about it during an event saturday night. I feel so bad for missing out on all the action. However, I just want to commend the TeSPA organization on an amazing job of organizing and fostering the growth of e-sports in UT. When I ran the UT CSL team, I did not do anything near this level. Keep up the amazing job guys!
|
Jacob tired.
Our $700 prize pool was distributed among the top 8, with first place going to EGStrifecro and second going to UT's own Zpux in a very close, very good 3-2 victory. Hope everyone had fun, a more proffesional follow up post will follow soon. Feel free to leave comments or suggestions here.
Edit: Also, I've started work on a replay pack. Not sure how complete it will be. If you played and didn't send replays, please try to. Thanks ^^

Double Elimination, no terran players aloud, free ice cream. Only things that would of mad it better. Great tournament had a blast! Can't wait for the next one ;]
|
Thanks for organizing this, I had so much fun!
|
I just got back from the tournament about 20 minutes ago. I had a great time. Everything went really well from a competitor's perspective, which is a great sign considering it was the first tournament and there were 64 people. I want to thank the TesPa organizers and volunteers for putting on such a successful tournament.
I foresee some exciting tournaments in the future. For anyone that missed this first tournament, I highly suggest attending the next one. It's a great experience. You'll meet a lot of really nice people, and you'll get to watch some very exciting and competitive matches.
|
I think the tournament was a great success! To all who helped coordinate this, good work! Hope to have more of these in the future!
|
Really good tournament Tespa did one hell of a job getting everything going, and I'd like to thank the people who let others borrow their computers.

Thanks to everyone on the staff that made the event run well. Can't wait for the next one. I placed 5th and was happy with that. I might cast some of the better games and throw them up on my youtube. www.youtube.com/eonshikeno

I remember hearing something about some replays that weren't casted live would be commentated and uploaded to a youtube channel. What channel is that, and what replays will be commentated?
Had a great time at the tourney though!

Liquid`Tyler lost 2-0 in the first round? Or he didn't show up....? lol I was supposed to be first on the backup list but I didn't get a call to come in. TeSPA admins just fucked me over this tournament...

If you wanted to be a back-up showing up would've been nice. Don't expect them to call you to replace a day-of no-show if you aren't even at the event, especially when there are other people there who wanted to be backups

Shinta, I thought you had been contacted, apparently you weren't. I apologize for the oversight. We're still somewhat new to this and yesterday was absolutely frantic. As for Tyler, he unfortunately didn't come.

This tournament was amazing! Everything went together very smoothly and without any major problems whatsoever. Thank you again for hosting a very professional tournament and the fact that it was your first time setting up an event of this magnitude leads me to believe that there will be many more of this caliber and better in the future.

Sorry guys I canceled the night before because I got sick and made a last minute decision to skip this tournament. I'll definitely try to make TeSPA's next tournament.

Don't blame TeSPA for not signing up and paying when they've had this announced for a month, and don't blame them for not contacting you when you had the choice to show up in case you got to be a back up. They all worked extremely hard and pulled off an amazing tournament. It's your fault don't insult them please.

Thanks for a great tournament! I was so overwhelmed when i entered the room in the morning. You deserve all the credits you get and hopefully we'll see more of this in the future!
It was a fun tournament, never thought my zvz would prove to be my most stable MU as I only dropped games to strifecro in the finals while I lost one game in a zvp and one in zvt before reaching the finals.
The final games was a lot of fun! First game was a bummer, I had played against seth doing the same build but instead of countering it the way I usually do I thought I would get away with just a few lings and spine crawlers.
Second game was intense, I won probably due to strife making the wrong decisions and me getting into the zone, really recommend the game!
Third was similar to the second one, I was way behind in drone count in the beginning, but with rent less attacks of roaches I managed to pull through in the end, also worth watching.
Fourth was a bummer, pure mind games. In an interview earlier we had questions regarding zvz and strategies, 7pool was mentioned and as the map was steppes I decided to go for it. But stupid hesitation blew it for me. I first made another drone after my overlord, as well as strifecros early scout made me go for "a fake 7 pool" and just built drones instead. And as I saw strife going for expo instead of just one base I saw my opportunity to get a win with more early lings. so at a drone count of only 13 I started making lings. This is where things started go wrong again. As I didn't use to normal connection that we had, but rather my own wireless from the school which worked perfectly during the tournament, my bandwidth ran out. Not sure how much it actually effected the turnout but it was sure annoying as I had a superior ling count but it was impossible to micro properly. Worth to watch to see some fail play on (in my opinion both sides) as going for an expo while already being ahead in almost all possible ways is quite risky and might lose you an already won game!
Last game was a build order loss. I attempted for a fast expo on Jungle basin while strife went for a speedling and baneling bust. His units arrived seconds before my first few roaches was able to close the ramp. After the game Strife told me he'd lost the same way a few times in the ladder and knew it was almost an instant loss (rock paper scissor builds).
Overall it was a fun experience and I will take away a lot from this event! Also, thanks to those who picked up the keys and fixed my keyboard after the final game. Next time I'll win!

Just for everyone's information... I signed up a week+ before the deadline but was unable to pay over paypal due to lack of information. As it said in one of the posts, if there are problems with payment, talk to the admins and they will help work things out. Well I messaged them about my problem and they didn't respond to me. After Sunday they sent me a non-reply message that said I didn't pay and didn't make the tournament... After that I complained to the admins and they said because of the mix up they would put me as the first back up player and call me if there are any players that don't show up. I was visiting friends in Austin and was competing in Warrior Dash on Sunday so I was hanging out on Guadalupe St. hanging out with friends and waiting for a phone call. @ ExO I informed the admins that without a call I would not show up to the tournament as I'm not going to pay money just to spectate, especially when I have so many friends in Austin that I love visiting with. That's why I wasn't at the tourny, but I was informed that they would call me by phone. @ Zapdos I'm not terribly concerned with TeSPA's actions, I still had a great time in Austin, but the fact of the matter is that TeSPA admins fucked me over for this tournament... I would have gotten totally trashed anyways, but I couldn't even compete because of countless admin slip ups. @ Jacob No problem man... Really sucks cause I wanted to play but yeah... I wasn't contacted and I was waiting around the UT campus waiting for a phone call and hanging out with friends. I'm really disappointed but I'm glad you had a good turn out anyways, don't take it personally, I'm just disappointed about my situation regarding the tournament, and how it isn't my fault at all. ANYWAYS, this isn't supposed to be a hate post. Hopefully I see you all at the next TeSPA event ^_^

Really? Look, how exactly did we fuck you over? Which one of the admins did you email? When you didn't get a response/the response that you wanted, why didn't you email one of the many *other* admins?
Our phone numbers are up there. Why didn't you call? We had people show up, pay at the door and get a competing spot. We also had a guy fly in from Dartmouth, literally stand there and wait for 15+ minutes because he did not prepay or even pre-register but get in. We even had left over spots after this >_>"
How many examples of "countless admin slip ups" do you have example for? I thought the tournament was more than excellent, we all worked our asses off for a month+ to do this. Who exactly told you that we would call to let you know that we had a spot opened just for you good sir? We're not your private secretaries, if you really wanted to compete that much then why didn't ring us up? Takes <5min.

A&M with 4 in the top 16, pretty impressive, they must have an amazing coordinator

Calm Mary. Nothing we can do. If someone wants to speak badly about us, we just have to smile and let our actions speak for themselves. Plus, I think we did a good job, and that's good enough for me (because mine is the only opinion that matters, god damn it).

Yeah. Remember how there was that one guy who kept waiting patiently for a spot? Turns out he flew in from up yonder and heard about our tourney from a friend. He waited so long just standing there with us at check-in. He was so nice about it too. You could tell he was just really excited about this whole thing.
Poor thing went against ZpuX in the first round though >_<

Yeah... we should have given him someone else's spot. Like maybe shinta's.

Shinta), I apologize about the lack of coordination with you. We made special arrangements with at least ten other players for the morning of the tournament and must have simply overlooked your case. This was the first time we have ever attempted a tournament of this magnitude and there are certain mishaps which cannot be accounted for without experience, regardless of how much prior planning is done and how prepared you think you are. We learned a *phenomenal* amount at this tournament. Next time, everything will run even better and more efficiently! Let's not let this detract from our success, though!
Overall, I am incredibly pleased with how things turned out. Starting from only the abstract concept of "hosting a tournament," we were able to create an in-person 64-person bracket including players from ten different universities across the state accompanied by a $700 prize pool. Throughout the event, we were never more than 30 minutes behind our estimated schedule and were able to workout all technical difficulties that arose promptly. We had live casting throughout the day of some absolutely incredible games, a live interview with ZpuX and EG.StrifeCro, and a huge amount of Starcraft/General Game/Game Music Identification trivia contests between rounds. We also raffled off 3 gift cards, 3 TeSPA T-shirts, and signed 'TeSPA Probes' by well-known players.
The tournament standings are: 1st - EGStrifeCro 2nd - ZpuX [UT] 3rd - TriMaster [UH] 4th - ExO [UH] 5th - EonShiKeno 6th - Cheeseblock [UTA] 7th - jaMble [UT] 8th - Krenium [UT]
Thanks to everyone who came out to play and spectate! We will be hosting at least one (possibly two) tournaments like this one next semester. I am very appreciative of everyone's comments and glad that everyone enjoyed the tournament so much!
I would like to give a huge shout-out to all of TeSPA Officers who helped to coordinate and plan this event, everyone who donated computers and game consoles for use during the day, and the wonderful volunteers who assisted with running the actual tournament! I I'd like to give a huge thanks to ZpuX and EG.StrifeCro for interviewing with us during lunch. Also, a thanks to the UH caster who joined us for a few of the matches.
Without the generous donations from mainLine Gaming and Amp Energy, our tournament would not have been possible. Please check out mainLine at http://www.ml-gaming.net/ and Amp at http://www.ampenergy.com/. Enormous thanks to both of these organizations!
Over the coming days, we will be posting a complete replay pack. Be sure to send in your replays to tespatournament@gmail.com if you have yet to do so. Also, our casters will be casting most of the games and posting those on our YouTube channel. In addition, we will be posting photographs from the event. Many thanks to Waytao Shing and Benjamin Lee for taking so many pictures!
If you're interested in playing in the future, keep an eye on the tournament section on TeamLiquid and our forums at http://tespa.proboards.com/. We will contact all of the players who participated in this tournament when registration opens next time. Also, look forward to a double-elimination tournament if we can work out the facility logistics.

so I was hanging out on Guadalupe St. hanging out with friends and waiting for a phone call.
You could have stopped by if you were just on Guadalupe street. I realize the drag is quite long, but if it was important enough to you to whine on these forums, then you could have at least walked to the ACA building which was like 1/2 a mile off of Guadalupe.
I signed up a week+ before the deadline but was unable to pay over paypal due to lack of information.
This also seems to be a bit of an excuse. I can understand not being able to get something worked out because of paypal, but not because they didn't provide the paypal account to send the payment to. Don't blame the TesPa admins for your incompetency.
I hope you don't show up with this kind of negative attitude at the next TesPa event.

Anyway, I'm planning on posting some pictures and possibly video I took during the tournament. Thanks for putting on such a great event, guys!

lol you guys are so good at misinterpreting and misunderstanding. I'll respond to only two of you @Kilgore I knew the TeSPA paypal account, I didn't have my router and account number on me when I needed to. I didn't realize it was necessary to make deposits into my own paypal as I've never used paypal before. Also I was on Guadelupe St in the morning for lunch, and I visited some friends at Coco's Cafe. I've never been to the UT campus before an I don't know anything about it. I'm not going to look at maps and navigate my way around if the admin didn't contact me because that is supposed to mean there isn't a spot available to me. I was just close by so that if I was called I would be able to get there fast so they wouldn't have to wait to long and I would have asked for directions over the phone. @karasu Haha I'm getting to be quite glad I didn't call you in particular. You are right that I should have contacted multiple admins about it rather than just the one who was messaging me. I just figured he be active in his messaging since he messaged me in the first place. I couldn't have called anyone though, unless I'm going to do so in between my classes when other admins probably have class, I usually work all day after that. I had requested Saturday off for the sc2 tourny and Sunday off for Warrior Dash. I should have emailed other admins about it. I was however told that I would be called personally if a player doesn't show up. Should I have asked all of the admins to call me then? As in seriously call each admin and ask them to call me if someone doesn't show up? I don't think anyone would do that if they were already promised a phone call.
Just one more time to make sure people understand, I feel like I got fucked, but I don't hold any grudge vs any particular admin and I don't feel negatively towards TeSPA. Especially with the way ReAson is responding, I feel he's doing to very good job as an admin in general and I really appreciate his response to the situation. I did want to attend other TeSPA events because I want to support Texas Esports, but if you guys don't want me there, and if you guys act stupidly, then I don't want to be there. My comment was initially just a small complaint which I do not take back, people just interpreted it incorrectly and in turn tried to cut me down by saying things like "you're stupid" lol. I made a longer post to try to clarify things, but you guys couldn't read it very well it seems. Well good luck to you guys in the future. Hopefully I meet ReAson at some point. Seems like a good guy...
|
This discussion is over. No more rebuttals guys, this thread isn't for bickering or flaming. Replay pack should be finished by wednesday (thanksgiving break, woo!)

Shinta, I'm very sorry for the situation. Please understand that this was our first tournament and we were truly trying our best. I'm not sure who promised you a call, but obviously there was a communication mix-up. We'll try to have all of these things worked out in the future.

Yeah, back when I did random caps, it always got butchered one way or another =P. I learned to just ignore it though. It's too much work to tell people to change it the way you want.
God, I hope Blizz puts out the name change soon, jaMble is such a (insert negative adjective here) name!

It would be nice if the bracket was updated to show the actual results instead of just acting like every series was a 2-0 or 3-0... or in the case of the finals currently showing as a 5-0 (lol). Anyway just a thought, though I suppose ya'll are busy if it's on excel it shouldn't be too hard to change and I know the actual results were written down somewhere.
|
I wanna thank all the Tespa officers for throwing a great tournament. I was definitely impressed how well you guys put everything together and it was an awesome first tournament for the organization. Tyler, Adam, and Jacob, I wanna specifically say great job to you guys specifically. I know tons of people pitched in and everything, but I appreciate everything you guys have done from hosting the tournament to PR in general. I enjoyed the tournament and even more enjoyed talking to you guys.
Thanks to everyone as well. Not to just the hosts, but the players as well. I enjoyed meeting everyone. Especially two of the players that I got to meet personally after playing matches with them, DrYevoc and Krenium. It's just cool to meet someone through a match, shake hands, and just talk about the matches. Even though I didn't get as far as I would have liked in the tournament, meeting new players is always worth the experience. GG's

Its the bracket program that makes it weird. It would require us to go in and hand change every set of every match, and even then it sometimes showed up wrong (often when trying to show a match as 2-1, it would show as 4-0.) So it likely won't be changed. Sorry .
|
Hmm, is it possible to upload the excel sheet somewhere so we can download it/check out the actual results of the part of the tournament we didn't play/see.
|
-BW-Map_God, I'll try to take a look at again if I have some free time over Thanksgiving. Like you, noticed the finals show 5-0. That happened because I tried to update it. Even though I manually inputted the correct sequence of games, the final results still show 5-0. If you click on "view details" on the map, though, you'll see that it's entered so the final score should be 3-2. If anyone has experience with binarybeast and wants to help, feel free to shoot me a pm.
Again, thanks for the kind words everyone! I'm looking forward to the next tournament.
