It is not mandatory to stay in these hotels. If you'd like to do a price comparison to find the cheapest hotel, I would suggest to use Google Search, using the address of the Rhode Island Convention Center which is 1 Sabin Street, Providence, RI to find the hotels closest to the venue.
yes can't wait! my first MLG that I'll be going in person to spectate! want to get better before trying to compete so I can at least put up a decent fight, lol
I don't think I'm the only one that really wants to see the new IdrA (Who is the #1 Seed for this event) really take this by storm and show us what he's been working on before he heads back to Korea.

Points through Raleigh are posted in the SC2 forums on MLG. I will have the threads updated with Orlandos results either this week or the next.

Pretty much, obviously not official until mlg releases a bracket.
Can't wait for this tournament to start, should be a great show as always. I really hope we see the same casters that were in Orlando and I hope we'll see a return of beta streams/back and white.

So a top 4 seed can win the entire tournament playing only 3 matches? That seems bad.

They've been proving themselves all year. That's MLG's format.
So beating THREE people in a tournament filled with over 200 means your the champ? Yeah makes sense. I at the very least thought this would be a normal 32 man double elim bracket. I forgot it was MLG we were dealing with...

It's 4 matches if you include the finals. And if they lose their first match, they will have to play 5 matches to get to the finals.

It´s called the MLG Pro Curcuit for a reason. You play all the events to get a good seed into the finals. If not all the other events would been useless with the low pricepools and points.
The players that showed up and played all events deserve the top seeds and shouldn't have to play as many games as people that only showed up to one event or never placed in the top.
You can argue that a whole year is a bit long a season for a new game like SC2 and that´s why they changing it next year to 4 season over the year so people can´t keep a high seed with just showing up.
this is gonna be awesome, but i think the point system needs changing, as these top 16 players arent really the top 16 that have attended. I know they reward loyalty and stuff, but it still makes a few of the first rounds a bit obsolite

So you're mad at MLG for rewarding the players that actually came to the events?
MLG is a season. There's 1 season a year. The results from all events go towards a national championship. You don't like it? Then you don't like the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. You must think those systems are stupid. God forbid MLG have a regular season and a post-season.
We're all lucky MLG didn't go with their normal format that they've had for years in Halo in that there is no open bracket at Nationals and make it an actual playoffs.

Can you point to me where in the NFL, MLB, and NBA do teams get put directly into Semi's? NBA starts with a TWO(East and West) Eight team playoffs and highest seed plays lowest seed, but everyone starts the same round and has to play the same amount of teams to get to the Finals. That ain't happening here. Seed 16 will play a lot more games than Seed 1 at Providence. Do you really not see anything wrong with that? In the NFL the Top seed gets a 1 round bye and in the MLB it's the same as the NBA.
Something tells me you have no idea how other sports works to say that MLG's format is anywhere near the same when it comes to playoff seeding.
you also have systems with like NASCAR where points over a season of racing has a affect on the final standing and who is the champion of the given season... i guess NASCAR and car racing events are a better analogy/comparison to use that traditional sporting events (football, basketball, etc.)

I think your analogies are inappropriate because they are very similar to the analogies that are commonly used, and those tend to suck. q.e.d.

I never said it's the exact same. Don't try and put words in my mouth bud.
I'm pointing out that they all reward the regular season results. Which is what this does.
Considering the format is based on you coming to (nearly) every single event (which people like MMA fuck up by not coming more than twice) you cannot blame MLG as the GSL invites only happened after the league started. Should they change the format and screw over the players that actually put in the effort? Is that what you want?

Problem is that the ranking within top16 is not very indicative of skill as there are a lot of players with fewer attendances. This system will still reward the top8.

what the heck? what you said doesn't make any sense. and if you look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase_for_the_Sprint_Cup you'll see how it's somewhat more like (but not exactly like) MLG, where performance in previous races have an effect on the final standings, with the difference being that in MLG previous performance is only used for seeding while the NASCAR system the sum of the previous performances determines the champion

Well if mlg did a 270 player open tournament with random seeding with 50k for first place at the end of the year then who in their right mind would bother flying internationally to play in a nonprovidence mlg?

The NFL gives 4 teams bye's in the first round, meaning you have to win less games so if you win 3 games you've won the Super Bowl. Some teams have to win 4.
I don't understand why people feel they have the right to tell tournaments that are clear from the beginning about the format how it should be changed.
It was pretty clear what the value was to showing up consistently, and finishing well consistently. This is a business and it is a smart way to entice the best players to be there. All players knew this going in.
The format is fine and the top placed players have posted a collection of results of the year that I have no problem with them being where they are. I'll go the other direction and say it is the opposite of fair that they would have to play the same number of matches/challenging opponents as a player who showed up to one event. They spent time/money/energy to get to that point, and are thus rewarded for it. Few people have probably played the same number of pure MLG game hours as the top players have.
To add on, Baseball is also going to a format similar to the NFL either next year or the year after, where there will be multiple wild card teams that have to compete to play against the division winners.
Looking at http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2011_MLG_Pro_Circuit/Rankings, Tyler and Drewbie are tied at 31st place and still got seeded into pools (due to a lot of previous attendants, team Dignitas etc not attending). This is not meant to bash these 2 players, it's more about pointing out that just because someone is outside the top 16 doesn't mean they won't get in. I doubt all of the korean invites who have been given flights and everything paid for them through the exchange program will return. (Since there's been a lot of posts saying X passed Y, so Y is no longer getting a free seed)
Just facts: since getting Code S, MMA and DongRaeGu didn't return. If MC follows this trend, that's three people in the top 16 who might not attend. Boxer, Puma and Rain are a different story, they still want that code S seed. What about Bomber? Guess it'll depend on how he does in GSL November.
Personally I just hope a lot of heavy names return even if they're not seeded - gimme Sase, Hero, Thorzain, Socke, WhiteRa, Losira etc.

on top of that, I'm surprised so many people are complaining. The original Blizzard cup was supposed to be KoTH style top 8 from the GSL rankings, meaning MVP would have to win 1 series to win the tournament. Everyone was fine with that. It's not like Idra starts in the winners bracket finals from being the number 1 seed. He attended many MLGs and performed well.
Hey Deimos, Providence Resident here. You may want to add that teams on a budget could fly into Boston Logan and take the $7 Commuter Rail to PVD Station, which puts them right downtown.
It is a bit more inconvenient (1-2 Hr Train Ride counting travel time from Logan to South Station in Boston) but may be exponentially cheaper than flying into TF Green.
There is also a City Bus (RIPTA) that goes from TF Green Airport to Downtown (Kennedy Plaza) and costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.
I will be driving all the way from Montreal to go there... unfortunately my friends are not really into that stuff so i might go alone... hit me up if you want to ride along (Je suis francophone...)
If anyone would like to meet at TF green and is staying in at the Providence Biltmore, and would like to split the cost of the cab send me a PM, my scheduled arrive time is 1 p.m. Friday afternoon from Dallas :D
Also if you need a place to crash ill have an open spot.

So if MVP isn't getting a top 16 seed, is MLG at least offering to pay for his trip as a reward for being an MLG winner this year?
IM doesn't have a sponsor to pay for international trips and MVP seems unlikely to show up unless MLG covers his expenses since he would have to fight through the open bracket so his chances of winning won't be that good.

He does have a few GSL wins though so he may choose to fly himself for a shot at the 50k

damn MLG should expand to 512 man open bracket for this....Only problem with that is round 1 would be like 8 heats. rofl. and you thought it was hard enough to get on a PC during warmups as it was? gg no re with 500+ players.

The Providence Place Mall will be roughy a 5-10 minute walk from MLG. This is your best bet if you want food without going far or getting lost (sit down restaurants are on the ground floor, fast food is on the 3rd). Also has a movie theater and an Imax 3-d place. (Or if you really hate your money and want to waste it, go to Dave and Busters.)
Thayer Street/ Federal Hill are big hubs for food and other random stores if you're feeling adventurous.
Johnson and Wales University and Brown University are also fairly close if for some reason you want to check out colleges during your stay here.
Coffee Milk is only found in New England, and very rarely outside of Rhode Island. This is the single greatest thing about Rhode Island. Buy some.
Clam Cakes are fried balls of dough mixed with Clams, they sound and look disgusting but are delicious if you get the chance to try them.
For people arriving at TF Green, I suggest you take the ripta bus from the airport to downtown providence, its only roughly a 15 minute drive and costs $2, rather than $30 for a taxi. And, if anyone is staying till Monday, i suggest going to Trinities bar n grill, they have 25C Wings, which are great. O:

It was at least 3 hours I think, cause I got mine ~10pm. I was actually gonna hold out a day just to see what kind of people would be playing, but I was like "hey, if I'm going, why wouldn't I get a player pass?" It's an experience I won't get normally, so might as well! Glad I did

Can you please provide the exact instructions for this? Where do we pick up the RIPTA Bus? What is the name of the stop? Keep in mind that I have never been in Providence, so I would not know what Downtown Providence looks like. How far away would this be from the Renaissance Providence? Thanks!

Spectator passes are technically limited. However, for every event this year, we have sold spectator passes up until the end of the event on Sunday, meaning, they were not sold out in terms of spectators.

Still doesnt change the fact that theres 255 other players in the open pool who are going to kick my ass xD

Don't worry, it's only 254 you have to worry about; if you run into me, you'll win (I'm only Platinum lol) :D

If you take a bus from T.F Green you will most likely end up in Kennedy Plaza which will put 10-15 minutes from the Renaissance, if you're walking towards it, go in the direction of PPM or the Capitol building.
http://www.ripta.com/content675.html This like will help you get from the air port to Kennedy Plaza, if you use this you will start in downtown Providence as opposed to Warwick.
They really should have limited them to at least masters league with X amount of points, cause it sort of sucks that platinum and diamond players will be taking up spots.
That said, nothing wrong for a platinum and diamond player to buy the pass when there are no rules concerning that. Just makes some games in the open bracket really meaningless for us spectators
I'm facing a bit of a dilemma. The latest train I can find returning to NJ on Sunday is at 10:22, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to afford the extra night (cutting it a bit close as is). The station is about a 10 minute walk from the convention center.
What do you guys think? Do the finals typically end before 10?

Absolutely not. Plus there's usually meet and greet and everyone's super excited for at least 1-2 hours post finals. Extra night would be loads better, but your call nevertheless.
This could be a huge month for MMA, coming off of his GSL win and being a heavy favorite for MLG nationals due to his very advantageous seeding. MVP and Nestea may be going, but the open brackets are treacherous and have claimed many players, even Code S caliber. Second, the quantity of matches is going to be rough on MVP with his carpal tunnel.
Forgive me for this blasphemy, but I would not consider MVP and Nestea to have an easy time through the open brackets. Both players are heavy preparation-style players, who excel at the GSL where one can spend a week before-hand preparing for a single opponent. At Providence, it will be match after match, with little rest and time to prepare. MVP has proven himself at MLG, but he had the advantage of being in pool play, whereas this format will be relatively new to Nestea.
For those who say that MVP should get an auto-seed for 1st place have a very good reason to say so, but such is the MLG format. MLG encourages consistent performance, which MVP has not shown. He was invited back for Raleigh, but declined (for good reason, to prepare for GSL, a much larger prize pool), but to MLG a no-show is means no points. If MLG wants to encourage consistent performance, it must increase the prize-pool tremendously, or most non-NA players simply will not be able to afford the trip alone.
On October 18 2011 00:53 daxile wrote: MVP will win this if he participates.
I don't think he qualifies for this seeding-wise, but I might be wrong.
he won a mlg
He's still not in top16 so he'll have to go through the open.
so? if u win a mlg and u dont get seeded it doesnt make sense maybe mlg should recheck their ranking system
they should make first place give 0 ranking points but reserve X amount of spots for event winners. people can say that people winning 9 months ago doesnt mean they deserve to be at the national champs but they still award 1200 points for that position so it was clearly never a factor for mlg
More SC2 Competitor passes will be made available.
Additionally, the main stage will now have 3 screens, 2 for showing the POV of the players, and the center one will broadcast the action as normal with the commentary.
The additional Providence SC2 Competitor Passes go on sale this Friday, October 28, at 7pm ET.
MVP would've been the favourite had he received a seeding, but it's going to be really really tough going through the open bracket. Not only is the competition there mighty fierce, but his CTS problems will hinder him as well. Mission Impossible, especially with how some players will only have to play like 4~6 Bo3s to win the whole thing.
Learning from IEM and IGN (the player POV). Still having beta streams streaming POV would mean that less games will be streamed
You have to remember, the format is very different. The main streams will be streaming open bracket for the first day or two, and then they'll be streaming almost every match anyway because there's just not a whole lot of matches.
It is a little bit of a bummer that we won't get games on the streams, but it's less of an issue than it would have been for last MLG.
Edit: this is all assuming beta streams will be PoV, they might be games after all?

Beta streams will still be showing matches, the PoV cams are for the Live audience only.
Truth. We will still have 4 streams of unique matches, the 2 screens we're adding will only be for the live event audience and will show the POVs of the players that are being shown on Red Stream (main stage)

Any word on the community casters? Not too many in the area that I'm aware of. Would be great to see who else is out there in the New England area.
Does anyone know what time players are supposed to show up on Friday? Cause I need to know if I'll be able to drive my friend who has a final on that Friday or not. Please and thank you

Players must show up by 5 PM on Friday which is when check-in ends. The actual competition starts at 5:30 PM.
When will we have event schedule and such? Most of the links on MLG site say the site will be updated a month before the competition. It's definitely a month before the competition now.
This is probably the hardest tournament for non seeded players for the year. I'm kind of doubting any Korean from the open bracket making it all the way. So many games have to be played + jetlag. Will be interesting to watch.
On November 02 2011 01:37 tofucake wrote: Also, what do I do with my spectator pass? Will I get a refund + it canceled or something, or do I just have a bonus pass now?
Can you please provide some details? Please PM me.
How do you register for this thing? The team builder keeps bugging out on me, asking for my location/birthdate but never going anywhere. The MLG forums don't seem to work either. They automatically redirect to some broken page. Anyone else having problems?
I didn't realize that there is no pool play at this event, and you know what thats awesome. The open bracket is so stacked and being able to follow players through that minefield should be very exciting. All the streamed games will have a definiate impact, and we will probably see a lot of our favorite pros that aren't in pool play every event. Players like Tyler and Destiny will run into IMMVP or IMNestea in the open bracket.
Should be a ton of fun to watch Friday night and Saturday afternoon

I'd suggest to try using Google to find hotels closest to 1 Sabin Street, Providence, RI.
You could also try using a site like Priceline.com to find the best deals for area hotels.

Probably Saturday night. The Open bracket typically ends on Saturday afternoon.
But I don't believe there is anything official posted yet.
MLG's - The only positive connotation in which you can say "oh, it's that time of the month..."
Can't wait for this, i'm hoping for a flawless event. As long as you don't adopt IPL's philosophy of how to entertain viewers during downtime, it should be not just great, but better than every other MLG event this year.
(IPL3 had fine downtime btw except for... y'know... that guy)
It's good to see that they all arrived in one piece. I was afraid the long tirp might result in one of them getting damaged.
Here are some additional photos of the MLG National Championship trophies during the build process. It was a very fun project and it was a great opportunity/pleasure to be able to work with MLG. I wish there were more companies like them.
Cool trophies. Remind me of some type of Greatsword that you give to the victor of the competition. Then like, you bring the loser out hold him down and the winner beheads him. MLG credits roll. End to a magnificent season of MLG.
That's what I was thinking it looks pretty heavy and dangerous. The champion will pick up that thing in his nerd arms, wobble it around, then impale someone on accident.

This was my intention when designing the trophy. *evilgrin*

Sry I suck with timezones...
The event will begin on Friday at 22:30 GMT (+00:00), and end anywhere from 00:30 GMT (+00:00)-02:00 GMT (+00:00) Local Time on Sunday, depending on the length of the matches.
A more detailed schedule will be announced soon
Time tagged that for you.
If it's anything like the usual MLG times it'll start way earlier on saturday and sunday, probably around 17:00 GMT (+00:00) or so.
According to TL calendar it starts at 22:00 GMT (+00:00) Friday, 16:30 GMT (+00:00) Saturday and 15:00 GMT (+00:00) Sunday.
Looks like I will be riding solo down from Derry, NH tomorrow around noon time. If anyone needs a ride and wants to keep me company while driving down, PM me.
But, still kinda upset with MLG's seeding format. I love IdrA, but seriously, he can win 4 games and win the whole shebang? A bit ridiculous, as far as I'm concerned.
Genuinely I love the idea of watching the stream with a few friends and a few beers rather than going out to a club... and that is exactly what i'll be doing this weekend. Mass MLG stream sesh gogogo :p
Quick question if anyone knows. I am going to try to attend on Sunday but i am still unsure if i will be able to make it up to Providence. I dont have a ticket and i just want to know if you can get in at the door and pay like a one day price or do i need the whole weekend pass? I dont want to spend the money on 2 days i am going to be missing. I just want to go to the last day. Does anyone know? Thanks.

Please show fewer ads. Currently, the stream shows an ad between matches and whenever I switch streams. I switch streams regularly, and a loud, 30-60 second delay makes the whole thing unwatchable. So I'd like to be able to watch without adblock, and I'm sad that I can't.
The volume control still doesn't work, but that's not important.

Open up 2 streams, ads are how they make money and an ad every game isn't actually that bad.
