The Australian Pro League is a new group of passionate dudes who love StarCraft, we love watching as much as we love playing, to this end we're in the business of hosting Sydney BarCrafts (seen here: BarCraft!) and now we're introducing the first of many tournaments to come.
The first season of the Australian Pro League will showcase some of SEA's best and upcoming players. Sixteen players comprised of eight qualifiers and eight invites will fight it out for a part of the $1500 prize pool.
The first stage of this occurs two weeks from now on the 27th of November. The Open Bracket Qualifier will take place where out of 256 players, eight will battle through to secure their spot in the next round of play.
The group stages will be composed evenly of invitees and qualifiers, with four players per group, played on the 10th of December. The two players of each group will advance into the Championship Single Elimination Bracket and have secured themselves a piece of the prize pool. The championship bracket will be played out on the following day, December 11, where the best player will prove themselves as the victor and champion of the first season of the APL!
There are many fantastic players in SEA and we couldn't invite them all but we can say with certainty these eight will show us some awesome games:
Sign up here: z33k Australian Pro League Open Bracket page
The tournament is restricted to those who have a SEA account and are Masters/Grandmasters players, there are 256 available spots based on a first-come first-served basis.
Summary - Start date and time: Sunday, Nov 27 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) - Tournament registrations will be handled via our z33k tournament page: - Players must have their account configured to use their SEA account information - All registrated players must check-in for the event in order to be included in the bracket. - Check-in begins 1 hour prior to the start of the tournament and ends 15 minutes before the start of the tournament. - Brackets will be released at the specified start time. - Every round is Best of Three (Bo3) with the initial map predetermined. The loser of the preceding game will decide the next map to be played. - After each series, players are to report their match results through z33k as well as provide the appropriate replays. - The Top 8 players will proceed onto the Group Stages.
Map Pool - Antiga Shipyard - Shakuras Plateau - MLG Shattered Temple - MLG Metalopolis - MLG Tal’Darim Altar - GSL Daybreak - GSL Crossfire SE
If there are any issues during the open bracket, admins will be in the channel 'APL'.
For full event details, please see the APL z33k page: z33k APL Open Bracket For the full schedule, rules and format information: APL Season 1 Information Package
In regards to streaming the Open Bracket: - Players must not stream their open bracket games in the spirit of fairness. We absolutely want to make sure that all players are on the same playing field and malicious intent cannot get in the way. We'll be pushing this rule by not having the open bracket appear on the TL Calendar to help alleviate this issue.
While the APL games are being played on November 27, December 10th and 11th, we'll be broadcasting the matches on the following weekend, meaning you (and I! :D) will be watching the APL on December 3rd, 17th and 18th.
This week delay will be used to deliver the best imaginable stream we can. We want to add our own special flavour of production to the pre-games, produce videos and content, and most importantly of all: stream in near 1080p high quality.
We'll be covering some of the open bracket games to showcase the players heading in to the group stage. Namely, we'll be broadcasting select open bracket's round of 16 matches on December 3rd, 11am AEST (for non-Australians, this would be: Saturday, Dec 03 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00))
Select matches of the group stage and the championship bracket will be broadcast on December 17 and 18 respectively, again at 11am. (Saturday, Dec 17 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) and Sunday, Dec 18 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00))
Casters: We're happy to have Duckvillelol cast for the Australian Pro League. He's a fantastic caster, who hasn't lost his passion , and is a pleasure to work with. Get a taste of his work here: Duckville: HuK vs Sjow at MLG
Finally, be sure to tune into the Dox Cup #2, it will feature some of SEA's best talent as they go up against some international stars, we can't wait for it and neither should you!
Sydney people, quite a number of well known players are heading to CityHunter's Burwood competition coming up shortly!
Lastly, our second BarCraft is planned for GomTV's "Blizzard Cup"! Look out for more details on our Facebook, just like last time
Thank you, good luck and have fun!

Whilst I won't complain, why isn't Glade in the 8 invited?
I guess he just didn't make the cut or something.
|
Any reason who Moonglade wasn't one of the invites ?? oO"
|
I assume Glade will be in Korea at this time for WCG

Unfortunately, Glade will be participating in the WCG Grand Finals in Korea.
(Well, unfortunately for us, amazing for him )

November 26th is the date of the big Arena Lan, is it possible to delay/reschedule it..
|
Ah, sorry Edge, we weren't aware of that At this point we don't wish to delay it as if we did, we'd push it back by a week and we'd land onto the same date as the Dox Cup qualifier. My apologies!
Edit: This is such a super-stacked next couple of weeks for eSports. MLG, NASL, WCG, etc. It's hard to find a date that doesn't conflict somewhere
|
what the hell? Myself, deth and TargA, among others will be occupied at a lan that day. How is that fair?
|
meh boring lineups, prob wont watch

Play from the LAN!

The invites are all definitely worthy but I think if you're going to host an ongoing tournament with an official name like the Australian Pro League you should at least define some parameters by which the invites are selected. Rather than just picking based on personal opinion or availability the invites could be the top players on ladder, winners of some designated tournaments, or have ongoing points specifically from APL events.
Love duckvillelol's casting though! Should also contact System (soulbora) if a co-caster is required as I think those two are some of the best casting talent in Aus.
It would be a shame to lose viewers just because people might stream - I say include it on the calendar or you're shooting yourself in the foot. Make rules regarding streaming well known, disqualify any players who are caught streaming or make them forfeit any games they streamed/are streaming in, and keep the event calendared. If people are going to try and break a rule by streaming the event they are not going to broadcast the fact they are doing so by attaching it to the calendared event anyway so you're just robbing yourself of viewers.
|
Bracing for "DUCKVILLE LOST HIS PASSION YEARS AGO!".
Should be heaps of fun, looking forward to it

I like how the open bracket qualifier is on a day in which every notable player not in the top 8 is going to be playing at arena lan... ={.
Anyhow, looks like it'll be a good event dispite that, gl with running it and hopefully pick a day which isn't hosting a major event for your qualifier next time .
edit: also, not that i have anything against jazbas, he's a manner dude and a great player, but why the hell is he playing in the 'AUSTRALIAN pro league' exactly...?

The restriction to the event is access to a SEA battle.net account. If you have that, you can register to play. It's not the easiest thing in the world to prove country of residence as well Besides, this opens it up to a larger player base, rather than just isolate the tournament to Australians only.

Yay, Australian Pro League! Go Duckville!

Alright, let's do this!
You're right. Our name does make it seem like we should be incredibly more stringent about these sort of things (I told them this name would cause us trouble, they didn't listen : P). We were very aware that these questions would be raised but it's kind of hard to address all of these things in an intro post (which we wanted to keep relatively clean for registrations). Before I begin, this kind of information will be readily available for later tournaments, and that "season 1" if you will, is a testbed for us and a way of introducing the APL to the scene.
That's not to say we didn't put a lot of thought into the invites, we paid attention to tournament results (IGN qualifiers, Blizzcon Invitational, Dox Cup, NRG, etc), and racial balance to some degree (poor protoss ), and it was impossible to come to just 8 players to invite. We'll be making the invite process a lot more well known come next tournament, but for now we'll just have to enjoy ourselves
It would be a shame to lose viewers just because people might stream
Oops, sorry for the confusion. The Open bracket won't be on the calender because we won't be officially broadcasting "our" stream until a week later, after we've added our production to it. When we broadcast, it'll definitely be on the calendar, but open bracket players will have already played their games.
Should also contact System (soulbora) if a co-caster is required as I think those two are some of the best casting talent in Aus.
Thanks for the suggestion! We'll look into him! :D

We're really sorry man This seems to be a very dangerous time to schedule events. We originally had the APL planned for December 3rd, but we moved it because we <3 the Dox Cup and subsequently lost two of our invites because of WCG. We weren't even aware ArenaLAN was going on, argh. Don't worry, we plan to have more tournaments for you to participate in, you'll just have to win ArenaLAN and then come to the next APL!
|
Good luck to those participating!!!

really like the $1,500 prize pool, a nice start for APL and Au ESports!
feedback: dates could be better imo with research unless there were logistical issues, like could have gotten glade + all the other players playing in Arena

You, edge, and pinder are right. We've decided to push the open bracket to the 27th of November, the Sunday. We didn't realise ArenaLAN was a one-day event.
(That should hopefully appease everyone!)
We admit it. This was abit of a mistake on our end and we apologise. Just had to clear it with some peeps before we pushed it
Edit: Glade was unfortunately something we just couldn't make happen. We needed to get the APL over and done with before Christmas and there were too many conflicts. We were really excited to have Glade but shit got in the way

seems cool, might not wanna use blizzard maps that dont have supply depot at ramp

Dels point on invite selection is important to keep the APL fair. Also; can you give us any indication on how often we can be expecting such an event from the APL? Non-the-less, looking forward to it, this is great for the Australia scene :D

We're operating under the assumption of a bi-monthly schedule, so you'll see the APL every two months starting from the beginning of 2012.

I'm also attending the same lan that edge, pinder etc are attending. If i'm not mistaken, the tournament is on the 26th until late, so chances are, most people are flying back the next day. Pushing it back to early the next day will flat out not work for most people; my flight itinerary itself has me listed as getting back into Sydney at 11AM: I'm leaving Adelaide at 8:35AM. The time for the qualifier will still be obscenely hard for those attending the lan to work with. I say this knowing that I've been invited: it's still unfair for people who are willing, and skillful enough, to travel around Australia to compete for an event, to be unable to play a qualifier having not received an invite.

So when is the latest that you can sign up? my friend is masters in NA, but diamond on SEA (pretty much only plays on NA). He needs to know how much time he has to get masters on SEA ^^

If your friend is Masters on NA, he still qualifiers to register for the event, as long as we can verify his ranking on NA. (Eg, if they are on the same battle.net account). But, you can register right up until check-in finishes. So basically 15 minutes before the start of the event. But do keep in mind, the positions are limited to 256 with a first-come first-serve basis.

despite missing a number of players, the invite list still looks pretty sick.

Thanks for this, very valid point. It's definitely in our interest to make it as accessible as we can, if we move forward to a 1pm start this should hopefully fix most of these issues. It'll be impossible to accommodate for everyone's flight schedule though, and it's very important to us that the open bracket finishes in a timely manner (this was our reason for a 11am start in the first place, things to do, people to see, money to earn...), so this will probably be the latest possible time we can do. We'll give a more concrete update when we've all slept

Thanks for all the feedback so far! The feedback from the community on this tournament has been great, and we'll try our very best to make it the best experience for both viewers and players. Although we're in a teething/experimental stage, a lot of work has gone into the planning of the event from the whole team, and it's awesome to see all the positive feedback from the community. We'll be working hard from now to try and fix up any problems that we can foresee, and doing more for eSports!

Totally agree. Our overall theme for future tournaments is "second chance", double elim -> group -> double elim but with December being so packed and us wishing to give ourselves more time to iron out problems: we have a few time constraints We didn't want to bite off more then we can chew initially, so we'll ease into it.

Sounds reasonable.

I'm 99% certain that this is limited to SEA residents only which means none of the big Koreans are allowed to play.
Maj0r, seeing as he lives in Sidney, is perfectly allowed to play though.

Since this is a "test bed" for us and something to show everyone what we can offer, the tournament is open to any Masters / Grand Masters players from any server, as long as they have access to a SEA account. And we have 2 Slayers players registered at the moment, so there are a few koreans in there
|
Oh heaps fucking sweet all Korean top 8.
No. I don't want to hear any bullshit about SEA has good players because we fucking don't. Saying anyone is invited is basically saying let's give fifteen hundred dollars to some Koreans. It's fucking annoying as hell to see really good looking tournaments around South East Asia and then they get ruined by letting foreigners (basically Koreans because of timezones) in because it'd look fancy. The SEA Masters Cup HAD Koreans in it and after it turned out that even Startale B-teamers beat the shit out of SEA they've mostly barred Koreans from being in the tournaments.

I think I could've worded what I said better. By "show everyone what we can offer" I meant the Australian Pro League in regards to tournament organised and production level of the stream. The limiting of regional play has been brought up before and we have discussed it among ourselves.
Rampage talked about this on the SC2SEA thread:
We argued about this internally for a long time and the short answer is that it's really, really hard to ensure that people are who they say they are. Acquiring a SEA account is easy, for us to get people to prove they are SEA residents is... not quite as easy. The end result is this, which is regrettable but don't misunderstand our intentions (which seem kinda conflicting, we'll admit : P). The APL will become what it's name says it is, but to do so we first need to show people what we're here to offer. We wish to be like the ACL, hold great Aussie events and have awesome people watch/participate in them, however we lack the same foundation as the ACL so we need to start somewhere, show people we mean business and then go from there. If you're referring specifically to the tweet: That was misguided intention. It was supposed to be like "hey look, we're doing cool things! Take interest in us and the SEA scene!" not what it came out to be. Great ideas when you're drunk don't seem so great when you're sober
|
It's pretty easy to stop koreans using smurf accounts, or atleast it is not 'really really hard'. Most of the people on SEA know where each player stands skill-wise, so if johnjames beats deth or something in the first round we'd know it's not a SEA player.
|

Every SEA event I've casted that has korean progamers (even B-teamers) results in them cleaning up. Hopefully they're at least close to the level of the rest so the finals (or whatever game has the last nonkorean) isn't a roflstomp.
|
|
This event is saved by having Korean people involved in the process. The game quality will go up, and the spectators will go up.
Its unfortunate that the prize will not go/may not go to an SEA player however spending $1500 on a tournament that gets minimal views is a bit silly.
The organisers have done the right thing, for now. Until there is a larger number of high calibre SEA players to provide quality games from start to finish the korean spectacle will always save the financial day.
I will be watching this event!

SEA B.Net seems to have crashed for some. If you're caught up in this, players have been informed about the situation and you won't be penalised.
Matches are to be replayed if you disconnected during a match. If one player was a huge advantage, you can discuss between yourselves as to the result of the match. If you can't come to an agreement, seek myself or Rampager for an Admin ruling.

Hahaha, step up your game or don't play at all then. You mean like how you heroically qualified for the IPL4 qualifiers? Oh wait. Well yeah, I had to beat MC in one of the online qualifiers, so heroically is a great word to describe it. Don't forget your heroic wins over the cube players in the group stages! Rofl, yeah low gm Cube scrubs... they would have been SO TOUGH.
such a child. you didn't even "beat" mc, you only won one game out of three (which nobody has seen the replay of, i might add). losing is still losing, and you're still failing miserably at life.

Due to issues with SEA B.Net all matches will be delayed until 2PM Sydney Time (1 hour 12 minutes from this point).
Hopefully B.Net has fixed itself by then so we can continue. At that time, please try to log back into SEA B.Net. If not, check back here for more details.

SEA is up again, please log in and we'll resolve all issues ingame.

After a few hiccups, we're finally wrapping up the qualifiers. The Top 8 have qualified for Group Stages, along with our invited 8 players. The Open Bracket Qualifiers will stream on the 3rd of December with Duckvillelol casting
