Announcing the ESL StarCraft 2 Country Championship 2012!
Open to countries around the world, the ESL StarCraft 2 admin team is organising a Country Championship in early 2012 pitting national teams against each other in both 1on1 and 2on2 to crown the best StarCraft 2 national team!
Yup, several noticeable countries still missing, please help spread the word that we need people from those countries to apply to take care of their national teams!

Something like MVP/Nestea/Leenock/MMA/MC/DRG would be very scary. I don´t think, any other nation would be able, to take them down. Besides Korea (if Korea does not sign up), Sweden is a big favorite (if they sign up); ThorZain/Naniwa/Sase/Sjow/MorroW is not bad either. At the current standing of sign-ups I think Poland, Germany, France, Ukraine or Canada are the strongest teams.
if there's no korea or sweden then its not going to have anywhere near the same level of play, and whoever wins will never be sure how good they really are

the winner would be the best country not counting sweden and korea. theres how good they are lol xp
Hmm without Finland, Sweden and (depending if they get their act together in more than one tournament) China, this will be fun but will hardly decide the best country except S.Korea in SC2 at the moment, really hope they get together a team

We have open apps from all 3 that we are talking to, so they should be decently represented!
Would be nice to see Sweden and China in this, so far it looks like Poland and Ukraine should be the clear favorites, with maybe France/USA/Canada behind them.

If Korea does not participate I think Ukraine (kas, dimaga, white-ra, strelok etc) or Sweden (naniwa, sase, thorzain, morrow, haypro, jinro, seiplo for pvp etc.) Will win
I love this!!! I have been so sad that the ENWL (European Nation War League) just disappeared after an awesome test season. Korea joining would be the icing on the cake, but it's already awesome how it is right now.
Sweden with only Haypro, SjoW and thorzain available would make a poor line up. But I still hope we get to see players like bischu, cytoplasm, seiplo, lalush, merz and jimpo, better than nothing. ^^
i have some doubts about how many countries will attend there, as there are so many tournaments with prizes already, that most people wont want to invest time into one without.

C'mon, don't think about money first when it's about representing your country
btw is it allowed for Countries to have more than one team like in the old Nation War Leauges? Like A-Team and B-Team?

lol germans...
I don't know what that could have to do with germans. Darkforce did show this attitude allready at the European Nations Cup and the german community wasn't to happy about it.
we need sweden norway and finland i think i can get over it if the rest is not participating
oh and my prediction for the biggest surprise of the tournament is belgium i dont think they can win it but i really think they are a team to watch out for (feast + Orly and some other more unknown guys)

This will be great, though it would be kinda nice to recieve the unpaid prizes from ESL Warcraft 3 European Nations Championship 2010 before playing another apparently sequal event to the old one.
I've been waiting for some organization to do a Nations cup, the interest for such a tournament will be huge if run well. Unfortunately I don't think ESL with their bad reputation of not paying prizemoney is the right organization to do it :/
Teamliquid, Gosugamers or some respected tournament should look into doing something like this.

This is an effort almost completely from our volunteer admins. Nonetheless, ESL always pays prize money and ENC has not been forgotten, and hopefully will be paid early this year.

We're coming to the end of accepting new countries now, while pushing the teams to sort themselves out with their players and figuring out the structure and schedule. Max players is 10.

And Deezer is Canadian I think.
I'm afraid Germany won't have a decent line up. We're doing the team selection per qualifing now, instead of inviting and as for example Darkforce has mentioned earlier in this thread, it's not worth to invest so much time for something where you don't get money out. So I'm afraid the top players of us won't take part in the quali, I hope i'll be proven wrong, though. Although i have to say that a lot of people are unawere of the shitload of talents we have in our backhand. Even without Darkforce,Socke,Hasu,Goody,TLO, Delphi and Xlord we could built a team that's able to compete with most teams (not with the very best, tho)

Default will be Europe, but countries from the same server will play there of course, and other cases we'll deal with as they come up
We will try to get some extra accounts to be able to use for the non-EU teams, otherwise we'll sort something out
Argentina Austria Belarus Belgium Brazil Bulgaria Canada China Croatia Czech Republic Denmark Ecuador Finland France Germany Greece Hungary India Ireland Israel Italy Lithuania Mexico Moldova Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Romania Russia Serbia Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey Ukraine United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States of America Uruguay

I believe so, just submit, what's there to loose?
And who else does he want in there? Morrow, who Thorzain 3-0'd at NASL? Sase, who really doesn't have many tournament results?
I'm not going to argue who should be in the team, both Morrow and Sase are great players who politely declined the chance to play for Sweden. Naniwa also has understandable reasons not to play, the only thing I disagree with is the need to flame the team we assembled, I feel it only causes unnecessary drama. :p
So none of the best players from Germany are going to compete according to the player list? Without all them they should be regerded as a "high" team and possibly switch place with Finland who has got an impressive lineup for this. Also, who are in Team China? :O
i think draft is fine if all teams got their best player in the squad but some of the top are not bringing their best and i dunno if they are still better than some of the lower. the players germany has there think they would be Medium tier.
and also think it sucks to invite a team directly when they dont even want to bring their best player xp
Yeah, Germany without players like Socke, Darkforce, TLO or Hasuobs definitely does not deserve an direct invite. Also, i would have loved another tournament system, that doesnt favor seeded countries that much, more like everybody has to start with groupplay. Are those seeds based on a previous country championship?
I think Poland or Ukraine will take it. That are some scary lineups.
I would agree with Xcobidoo, if that's Germany's lineup then it might be wise to switch them and Finland. Serbia's lineup isn't updated yet but even in a best case scenario I might switch them and Czech Republic.

Thanks for all your feedback so far! Please spread the word far and wide, we want as many opinions as possible!
Germany: Understandable, though their full squad is still to be determined, but if it doesn't look like it will strengthen then yes they will be moved
China: We don't know yet, the manager from ReGolith ( http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/team/5829726/ ) is supposed to be organizing a team (under the supervision of Xp from ESL Asia), but it looks like there's a strong possibility the team will not happen.
Reducing the invites to 8 teams therefore is a strong possibility.
too bad morrow, lalush, naniwa & sase are missing on Swedens team, but still their team is incredible. I am also very confident my own lovely country the Netherlands will do good in this tournament. With Grubby & Ret both on the team and a incredible talent pool around team with PoYo, Harstem, Rainman, Sushi, etc.

Lalush? Are you serious?
This.
I'm a serious follower of Millenium Team and i must admit that i didn't hear about him since a very long time.
I looked over everyone's lineups now and other than the two recommendations I made earlier I'd say that Israel's lineup is very good in comparison to the other low seeds, I think they're better than a few of the medium seed teams as well, it's difficult to say where a change needs to occur at though. Perhaps Belarus, they seem a little weak without LoWeLy in their active lineup.

As it seems not. There are still 2 out of 4 quilifiers left, so potenially they could, but as it seems, they're too arogant. Lost a lot of respect from me.

How U.S. doesn't deserve to be world class? Most of US Team has performed well at MLGs and most of them have qualified for IEMs
qxc is a world class player indeed but I don't think the other one can beat neither the Top north-american player nor the top EU player!
I don't say they are bad but i don't think this rooster is better than (for example) the finnish one(whitch is not in World class)!
And 'bout the MLG, you know that the seed system was quite unfair... And There was only Axslav and Strifecro qualified for the IEM New York, only Qxc is qualified for Kiev!
The point is that the USA rooster could be much more stronger and I find it quite disapointing...
I have to agree that Finland should be world class(probably instead of Germany, unless there's some serious changes into the line-up.)
It's probably a more managable system, even if it's not the most fair system. However, most of the direct seeded teams would probably get in anyway, so it might make the first group stage more interesting.

To be fair, Nightend is a Dreamhack Semifinalist and has shown very good play in Shoutcraft invitational and at IEM. I know, biggs is a very strong player, but Nightend should be a bit above him. And Deathangel is IESF 3rd place and won a few other things, too.
I'd say to keep the team groups as they are now (though I agree with changing Germany and Finland) and then it will be easier to make it next time after the teams played against each other already.
Honestly having doubts about placement of only 2 of 38 teams shows the placement was done really good.
I really hope that some of our pros take part on the national team. We wouldt have so many good players. Hasu, Socke, DF, GoOdy, XlorD, Delphi, DBS, RINE, Rmdx, Farmer, KnowMe (and maybe TheLittleOne) and Delphi/kAra for 2v2.

Yeah, i don't know, a bit more patriotism would have been nice, although there is (as of now) no money involved. TLO I get, hes barely in contact with the german scene anymore, but then I dont want to speculate about his or the other good german players motives for not participating.

As far as i know GoOdy and Darkforce are playing and theiy're trying to convince others to play as well.
the usa lineup is completely not worth of a direct invite - no sheth and no idra makes the roster competely average and the canada lineup without huk .....
i dont see how the could ever be seeded directly and netherlands for example isnt ...

I honestly think that the netherlands would be a good choice..
As even more teams confirmed their participation, we have had to reconsider the tournament structure yet again!
Considering the number of teams we now have we have decided that having a qualifying group stage is no longer the best solution, and instead we will go directly with a groupstage featuring all teams. Eight groups of 6 teams - two groups of Americas, six of Europe.
Man, this tournament really needs a sponsor. Don't understand why so many sponsor one-off tournaments but not a tournament which runs over a long period of time and is interesting for a lot of people around the world (since everyone's country is involved in it somehow).

Well, it is not our A-Team, but calling a team with Xlord, Delphi and Goody a joke goes too far. Xlord is right now chilling in the Brazilian sun, because he managed to secure a spot for IEM Sao Paulo. Delphi has improved steadily over the last months and showed glimpses of his potential, when he took out MKP at HSCIV and Goody is, even if some people try to deny it, a Top 5 EU Terran.
Out of the qualified ones, the most promising is Noxout, who is a 15 years old GM and had some pretty good results in EU-cups lately. I think, that he will be recruited by a high tier team in the near future (I would like to see him on Alternate).
So, you have at least 4 decent to strong players and one of the best 2v2 teams (Delphi/Kara) in EU. Not the optimum on the level of Ukraine with their Fab 4 or the scary roster of Poland, but not bad either.

Yeah, Chinese players haven't performed well recently - IEM Guangzhou, WCG, heck even the Select vs Macsed showmatch shows that increasing exposure of the chinese scene reveals that initial estimates of them being "on par" to Koreans based on one online tournament [StarsWars] is not exactly accurate.
So I would swap Ukraine and China. I also think Poland should be much higher - Nerchio and Mana are both generally top/upper tier foreign players, and Tarson and Diestar are no slouches, either. Germany's players haven't had too great of showings recently, too, so I would rank them a little lower. I would put Poland #5, USA #6, Germany #7. Also, instead of Axslav as rounding up the US lineup, it should be either Gatored or Illusion.
It seems that the gaming calendar is based purely on seedings. It's understandable, but in this way all the best matches will be played simultaneously. Some variation would serve the audience much better.
Teams organise matches themselves, the dates you see now in grey are the 'default' dates created by the system. Teams schedule their own matches, within -1/+2 weeks of those dates.
Team managers and captains are being informed through the players board of everything they need to know, so check your mails if you are one!
China is in "europe group #5" as all the Chinese team are all players that are in Europe.
This needs SO much more hype then it has now! This could easily be the equivalent of a REAL wold championship, were it isn't the individuals only, but a group effort, to find out what nation will come out on the top of them all.
Could easily be one of the most exciting offline (for now) events onwards. Imagine when getting to the top 8 team if they were to play the grand finals in a LAN event? Holy Batman.
Let all support this as much as we can spread the word, and cheer your hearts out for your country!

I really hope someone will come up with a "Country Championship Show ", covering the best and interesting matches, updated results etc. But I guess that will have to wait till "season" 2.

I definately agree, it's a shame it isn't getting more attention, this could be huge
Dakkon in the brasil line up? come on!! even me a freaking bronze league that dont have both hands play better then him!! At least we have reason this time.

He was on the lineup during the LANL, but he didn't play much, he was always on the B line. I agree with you and don't think he has the necessary skill to play for the brazilian team, but unfortunately, not all the players have the availability to play always, then we need some reserves and for that I believe he fits.
In my opnion the better line for Brazil would be: Potiguar, Lamp, Reason, Tunico, Fortune, Lienchi, Kelsen, Assaf and Cenios. But is questionable, because we have 4 players in a upper level (Potiguar, Lamp, Reason and Tunico) and the rest in a similar lower level, this includes Dakkon.

Well that is your dream list of players and not the actual players competing in the cup... So I guess the "hype" is where it's supposed to be since we don't even know when/if/where the matches will be streamed.

the matches will be streamed by their countries guys just said they will post the streams on the match pages maybe some matches will get more special attetion to get english stream xp
There is no prize money (at the moment, still a possibility)
Last night's match (Russia vs Croatia) was not properly scheduled, so I'm not sure if it got streamed or who by We're working on getting as many streamers as possible for other matches
shit wish i had seen this earlier. I think an Australian team would be pretty strong. mOOnGLaDe, tgun, PiG, Mafia, Iaguz, Rossi, YoonYJ etc etc are good man
Streams: http://www.twitch.tv/Gyroscopesc2 (Swedish) Will see if we can get an English stream, unfortunately it was quite short notice, so it might be hard this time.

It all depends on which players will be playing but if we swedes would get our best players none but korea can beat us Really wish tournaments like this could get more hype and price money ensuring the best players joined. Would be more awesome then the world championship in football (not the lame american version).

delphi xlord and goOdy will have to do it for team ger i guess
managers had the worst idea ever and made qualifiers all the pro's didn't even attend to ... sooo sad
will be a battle between russia, ukraine and sweden then i think ukraine has the best chances but russia is also quite strong especially because they have aristeo who is very very good at 2v2 as well (or at least he used to be)
and i laughed so hard when i saw the score of USA vs Bolivia lol would be too funny if USA dropped out in group stages but they have no good opponent so maybe not...
We're working on getting it in sidebar, but it's tough considering teams schedule their own matches, and some aren't great at doing so, or with good notice, and TL have tough (but fair and understandable) rules for the sidebar

maybe you could get a time where you guys stream the replay of like match of the week or smthing xD
The managers and captains of teams Ukraine, Slovakia and UAE have given up their position leaving their teams at risk of dropping out of the tournament. Therefore we urgently require team managers or captains for teams Ukraine, Slovakia and UAE otherwise they will drop out of the tournament!

If any streamer is interested in doing that, we would fully support/help them in promotion!
Well, don't think that ThorZain will play today, he got MSI Pro Cup though, and I'm a little bit sad that we don't got more of the top tier swedes, and ofc I'm a little bit sad about that the others just got 1 or 2 top tier players. I was hoping for more in this :D
Edit: Just saw that Ukraine got a freakin sick line-up!
Awesome! I've been waiting for some nation wars! I wish korea was invited, but looks great never the less.
Group A should be taken by the USA and B by Canada. Sweden should take group C easily, UK should take second if demuslim and bling are playing. Group D looks close with germany and poland, and spain, france or denmark could all take group E. Russia should take group F. In Group H Ukraine should be the favorite to win but finland has a decent shot. Group G should be taken by China if they sport their best players followed by netherlands.
I think Ukraine is the favorite to win, with Sweden having Naniwa, Morrow and SaSe (and cytoplasm?) in korea. I still think we'd be top 3 though. China, USA, Poland, Canada also have great teams and a shot for the top 3 spots place.
Maestro vs inFptaK 0-2 StarEagle vs Loacker 2-0 aTnClouD vs Gravity 2-0 StarEagle & AgahamSorrow vs Prodigy & Loacker 2-1 AgahamSorrow vs TBD (to be player tomorrow)

Rofl, he is really funny and he really love his "job" His stream reached 300+ viewers and this is a record for the italian community.
And italy vs Croatia is over, you can check the result in my previous post
I think this is such a interesting tournament, the teams/nations should care more about that. SC2 shouldn't be just about prize moneys and professionalism, it should be entertaining/funny most of all and interesting for the spectators and with a little bit of honor involved (nations pride :D), which I think this tournament attends those expectations.
awesome tournament such a shame that it is like team germany C + delphi and goOdy but since they are still doing quite well (and have some good up-and coming players) i wont complain
Wow, Korea doesn't have a team? That sucks I guess this is the World Foreign tournament, then Still, it should be interesting. Let's go Canucks, let's go!

Poland is always taking its country vs country (in sc) matches seriously. Remember bw? There were always like 4-5 more players than needed in channel during a match, ready to replace shedulded players. Team spirit, and kibitzers pressure i assume.
It has been a very tough 2-3 weeks getting all the remaining matches played out, we would like to thank the teams that made great efforts in being organised, scheduling and turning up to their matches without drama!
Now that it's the playoffs, the scheduling of matches will be much more controlled which means we will be able to make bigger efforts in getting coverage. Looking forward to some great matches!

Poland won over Denmark 1-0 (only 1 player from Denmark showed up, the rest was busy playing D3, apparently). Poland vs Spain and Germany vs Finland are to happen in the semi-finals. This tournament really needs to finish soon, it progresses way too slow to stay interesting.

We're trying to finish as soon as possible, but the scheduling of the playoff matches have been heavily slowed down by all of the Blizzard nationals (and their numerous qualifiers). The calendar was already ridiculously full before WCS added to it!
It's sad nobody, even the players, care about this tournament. I'd love to see as much hype and attention for a nation tournament as there is for GSTL.

well its ESL organizing it so..
I'm sorry about the WCS qualifiers, I was not involved in their organisation For the Country Championship we are doing what we can, mostly limited by the teams scheduling abilities which are stretched to the limit due to all the other tournaments going on - especially WCS
We had streams in four languages last night, and will hopefully have the same or more for the next semi final. Am trying to organise as much promotion as I can, for a prizeless cup!

people still think Spain is only LucifroN xDDD! we have 9 grandmasters (3 of them in the top 5) and our 2v2 have been in the top3 since the beta.... xD

Cananda dropped out for lack of players
Not lack of players but lack of competition/prize pool. Without a tiered system it was a waste of time to play vs diamonds.

Because of how difficult it is to get all the matches played live, we are organising matches to be played and replays collected, for a replay cast show hopefully next week
Necroing this thread for a good reason, or maybe the ESL will make a proper thread or presentation.
Seems we are now after some small delay getting a replay cast for the Grand Finals. Zedd, Take and Icicle casting on November 20th at 19:00 CET - just the right thing in between BWC, Dreamhack and IEM :-)

It was supposed to be a 2on2, but the teams scheduling made it impossible to actually get it played. I had actually conceded to just abandon the grand final overall with no result (this was after 4 months), but the teams then decided to finish it, and agreed on an ace 1on1 match to just get it done.
Hopefully next year's tournament schedule is more sane, otherwise I don't know if we'll try again!
I think the concept of having a country championship is great. But if the production is bad and the players are not motivated to play because there is no prize money then there is really no point in organising the whole thing. I am pretty sure that with the prize money and production of an IEM event this tournament would be a huge deal.

Yeah, you did what you could with the limited amount of resources. I really hope you can convince the people in power to support your project. I think a country championship would be a lot more interesting tournament than an IEM event.
