The time has come for our twenty-sixth IGN Pro League Fight Club! This is a weekly king of the hill showmatch series. Basically, there will be a 1 vs. 1 best of 9 showmatch each and every week, where the winner will earn a $500 prize and a $100 bounty on their head. For example, if a player wins three weeks in a row they will have earned $1,500 and a $300 bounty. If a NEW challenger defeats him, they will earn $500 for the showmatch, take the $300 bounty home, and have a new $100 bounty placed on their head for each week that they win. (Similar to IPL Team Arena, but without the teams!)
StarTale Squirtle has already shown us that he is taking Fight Club seriously, taking out SlayerS`CoCa handily last week, a player that was renowned for his amazing record against Protoss. This week, VortiX, one of the recent stars of IPL Team Arena Challenge 3 and a TSL4 qualifier will take his turn in the challenger's seat. Will he be able to showcase some brilliant ZvP against this proven GSL powerhouse?

I love Squirtle but he is far from the best PvZ in the world. Although Squirtle should win i expect VortiX to at least take a couple of games/make it close and would not be that shocked if he won. Probably the most underrated player in the scene atm
that's so sad I love vortix, but this is gonna be so hard for him. He shows flashes of brilliance sometimes, but (imo) he's nowhere near consistent enough to destroy Squirtle, who is like top 3 protoss right now Remember that daybreak game vs SaSe in a TSL4 qualifier? He killed all 3 nexus(es?), but he couldn't hold off the counter
Squirtle's PvZ is in the top three currently, while VortiX has yet to really prove himself against top Koreans. Probably going to end up 5-1 or 5-2 for Squirtle.
Great opportunity for Vortix to tell the world that he's arrived and to demo the fruits of his training. Squirtle is an awesome PvZer no matter how you see it, and the map pool is excellent for the match up.
Well VortiX is qualified for TSL4 and did very well in IPL TAC3 but taking out Squirtle would easily be the outstanding achievment of his career. I highly doubt it though. Squirtle is one of the world's best players and very capable in PvZ.
Vortix is pretty damn decent recently however taking out Squirtle requires another level of skills and maybe a little bit of luck. Hope it's not going to be one-sided.
How well does Squirtle know european zergs ? Would not be suprised if Vortix made it close or even pull an upset. He will have easy access to Squirtle's games, i wonder if Squirtle is going to find many games of Vortix. Online you just never know. I am going with a well preped VortiX on this one.

Saying Squirtle, who has far more experience and overall skill in the game, is likely to win is not "hating" on VortiX. It's a reasonable inference given the information on both players.

Pretty much. Vortix isn't even in the same league of talent that Coca is so Squirtle will absolutely demolish Vorix. 5-2 at absolute max but more likely 5-0 or 5-1 lol

I was just being silly. @_@ People too serious here.

Like "talent" has anything to do with it. These spanish brothers don't lack any of that. A korean practice regime + equil skilled players around him now there's your problem. Talent though he's got plenty.
Vortix is probably a damn good player (I know nothing but his name), but the only thing in his favor is that he plays Zerg. I think he could take one or two games, but I don't see it going much further than that for him.
On July 17 2012 03:35 Havik_ wrote: I watched enough PvZ this weekend, so I'm going to skip this. Squirtle vs someone I've never heard of before?? Squirtle 5-0.
VortiX is definitely good enough to take a few games if Squirtle leaves a few more openings than normal, but I don't see this being terribly close, especially since Squirtle went 5-3 against CoCa just last week
I don't want to take anything away from Vortix... but anything aside from 5-0 or 5-1 in Squirtles favor would be a major surprise. Squirtle has definately one of the best PvZs in the world. (I would place Seed and Creator above him, but hardly anyone else...) This might be a way to hard task for Vortix
It could be DRG vs random masters player and so long as the guy was from a country not called South Korea there'd be some people in this thread better against the best player in the world.
VortiX is even more underrated (relative to his skill) than Squirtle used to be before his IPL4 run, which is kinda sad IMHO. That said, I doubt he will win, but I expect him to make it a closer and more entertaining series than most people predict here. Should be some good games either way. ^^

It could be random bronze league Korean against the best EU GMs and Aeroplaneoverthesea would still be on the side of the Korean.
My brain says 5:1 / 5:2 Squirtle. I hope that Vortix can make this a close one, though. He's become one of the best EU Zergs over the last months, would be cool for him if he could show that in this showmatch.

Well I'd probably want the Korean to win purely for the laugh but I wouldn't be in this thread mindlessly running my mouth about how he would.

Squirtle was at least known for killing IMMVP (back when he was near unbeatable) in GSTL at almost beating NesTea, and for being a strong ST Protoss in team leagues.

Obvious american...
I think what you mean is anyone who watched NASL where 90% of the games was PvZ.

The "obvious american" was in response to the fact that they don't know who VortiX is, even though he qualified for TSL and is generally one of the most talked about european zergs at the moment.
Squirtle has some of the best PvZ in Korea atm. VortiX has been playing pretty well lately, but it would be really hard for me to see him taking down someone like squirtle. I'm going to go ahead and say 5-1 squirtle, maybe 5-2 but probably no closer than that.
VortiX stayed way too long on Roach/Ling, when he should have been transitioning into Infestor/Brood Lord during the pressure, and building a Spine Wall.

Creator as well didn't bother with Colossi vs Nerchio's Roach heavy composition and had 8 Immortals in his late-game army.

I was more referring to the build itself (said "style" for some reason). It was completely identical to what San showed in pretty much all his PvZs in the IPL5 Korean qualifier a few weeks ago.

Ok, I thought you were referring to San's OSL games today.
Vortix is playing an outdated style in a lot of ways. The drops in the second game were an attempt to get out of that style, but mass roaches just do not work these days and Squirtle is hard countering them to boot.
Immortal heavy two-basing / three-basing is the go to build in Korea because it flat out destroys roach builds and also works well enough against hydras. With great FFs, it's not bad vs. ling heavy styles, and with great timings it's able to hit before ling infestor and muta ling is able to get the techs it needs. I want to say that it's virtually unbeatable on small maps but that's going too far.
On July 17 2012 09:11 zefreak wrote: Who thought it would be a good idea for VortiX to play against Squirtle?
IGN? I think IGN was impressed by Karont3 during the IPLTAC, and wanted a player from there to join. VortiX happened to be free, so they asked him to face Squirtle. Though it will probably end up a facestomp, at least we get to see some great Squirtle PvZ.

Well He all-killed Empire, he qualified for TSL 4 beating Golden, select, hasuobs.. Ye Squirtle is a monster but Vortix is really showing his skill lately.
squirtle missed his timing, gave vortix enough time to get like 12 corruptors out. should have pushed with 3 colossus when the spire was just finishing.

Now this is a cute post.
But I guess mas hydra with better creep spread vs protoss air might but better due to the patch. I'm not saying go straight up hydra, but the transition is less bad especially if you do like Doa said and make corruptors expecting the mass collossus transition.
Can AskJoshy stop trying to bash overlord drops? Its getting annoying that some1 really wants to keep the game as it is and tries to stop innovation, instead of being curious to see where it might take the metagame. (not that dropping is a novelty.. hell dimaga plays all his ZvP with drops).

It wouldn't be as bad if Overlord drops weren't amazing. He also keeps saying Stargate openings suck T_T.

well everyone knows 2 rax is squirtle's bane, he's so terrible at defending them its unreal, he turns bronze at the sight of a 2 rax

Its funny because Losira and Squirtle were friends at school and they're both terrible at defending a 2 rax.

Squirtle 3-2 Vortix
Thanks, much appreciated. Good to see Vortix at least putting up a fight
Squirtle wins @ohana with great warpprism+immortal micro in a 7 gate build. 4-2 now.
Muta/ling +bling drops and a lot of flanking provide vortix another game: 4-3. (Squirtle went DT harass, and archon+blink stalker, warpprism did nothing)
But seriously, very well played there by Vortix. I came into this match thinking "I know Squirtle will win. But the question is, how many games will Vortix take?" And he took 3 against a GSL runner up, so not bad at all!
