The only time somebody has achieved that level of success coming from one region into a game dominated by another region, was Grubby, who is still frequently cited as the best WC3 player I'm not sure if it has been said or not, but that is not a STRICTLY true fact. The king of smash, Ken Hoang, was the dominant force in the US, traveled to Japan, and dominated there on his Japanese tour when Japan was the "place to go" for smash.

Pretty sure that Japan wasn't the best smash country (I presume you are talking of Melee since Ken was once dominant on Melee and I don't know if he played SSB but Isai dominated it so it can't be Ken) even though they had players like Bombsoldier, CJ (was it his nick? not sure, I think it was a really good sheik) and probably others, USA was at the time still better. The problem with LANs games is that you don't really get to play often vs people from other continents so it's hard to know, especially if the main representant of one continent isn't in a good day, etc.

That is something that has to be changed in this kind of group format.

Ken was a guy who from 2003-2007 in Melee had the best win/loss ratio of any player and formed an unbeatable 2v2 team with Isai. Isai was the dominant figure in SSB64, you are correct, but he was also considered one of if not the best teams player in melee as well. I'm pretty sure that most people would say that by the end of Melee's life USA had improved to the point it was probably #1, (though not by a huge amount), due to players like M2K, Hungrybox, Mango, etc. but for a time, Japan was really good to the point where the top player in the world thought they provided the best competition.

Really, that's the only way to "fix" this format, and I'd say that most people here will take this format over one that uses extended series any day. (I personally don't mind extended series, but I'm weird).

A final with extended serie is less spectacular for sure but in every groupstage you know, the goal is to rank all the players not just give a winner. It is just weird to chose the player who lost the match overall to advance from a groupstage. edit: To the guy below me : Exactly, and overall Stephano is ahead versus HerO.
