SHOUTcraft is back with a new tournament and this time it's a little different. We're taking a break from the regular format which will hopefully be back upon HotS launch in full force with a big prizepool, to try something a little more personal and a little bit different.
Welcome to a Heart of the Swarm House tournament in which every player currently living in the temporary Axiom team-house will play each other in a grand round-robin format with the top 2 going on to the grand finals for a chance at the lions share of the prizepool. What's more, we will be playing the entire tournament on Heart of the Swarms new patch.
Prizepool
First Place : $600 Second Place : $250 Third-Fourth Place : $50 Fifth Place : $50 and must wash the dishes for a week.
Format
Everyone will play each other in a BO1. So that means 10 maps in all. A vs B, A vs C, A vs D, A vs E, B vs C etc etc. The top 2 players with the highest map score will go on to the finals to face each other in a BO5.
Map Pool
Maps will be selected at random and then removed from the pool until the last map is used, at which point the pool will be refreshed. This means each map will be played twice in the round-robin stage. The finals will use all 5 maps via a standard loser-picks format with the player with the highest round-robin score choosing the first map.
* Ohana * Antiga Shipyard * Newkirk City * Daybreak * Cloud Kingdom
Players
The tournament will be brought to you by the 5 players currently living in the temporary Axiom house. Many people do not know that for quite some time, these players have been living together, even before the founding of Axiom and this arrangement has remained at the players request. Soon we will be looking for and picking out the perfect team-house for our players but for now, we have access to a great deal of talent in a small space. Here are your contestants.
Ax.CranK - Team Captain and founding member of Axiom will be bringing his unique brand of Protoss play to the Heart of the Swarm beta in this competition. Fresh off a 3rd place finish at Lonestar Clash 2 he has a little downtime before his next tournament competition and he'll be using it to play some HotS.
coL.Heart - The Hobbit Terran, why? Because he's tricksy that's why. Heart became known for his cheesy play and unusual builds in foreign tournaments finishing 3rd at the MLG Winter Championship and Spring Arena, however his excellent 5th place finish at the Fall Championship resulted from lengthy and impressive macro games against the likes of Scarlett, Thorzain, Golden, Hwangsin and Polt. It remains to be seen how his unique style will transition into HotS.
Ax.Ryung - Code S RO4 GSL semi-finalist Ryung has finally been able to relax after his best GSL finish yet, narrowly losing to eventual champion Sniper in a nail-bitingly close series. Now the TvT master that many say has the best TvT in the world gets to go up against 3 Terran opponents in a different game entirely where the rules have very much changed. Will his trademark defensive and positional play still work with new units and distinct changes to the Terran faction? We're about to find out.
Acer.MMA - The mighty MMA has a bevy of championship wins under his belt not least of which a GSL and after the SlayerS disband has found a new team in the form of Acer. With a lot of expectations riding on his shoulders, MMA is now coming to Heart of the Swarm with a clean slate and a chance to show his talent once again.
Ax.Miya - Some call him the Practice Bonjwa, others Hipster Zerg, what is for sure is that this Zerg player has a ton of potential and some of the biggest glasses in the industry. He is also perhaps the biggest threat in this tournament, having played the most HotS out of any in the line-up. Along with new units, HotS has only a few short days ago made extreme changes to the Zerg to strengthen the viability of Muta and Hydralisk play while heavily nerfing Infestors with a fungal projectile attack. For the first time we will get to see how a changed Zerg competes at a high level.
Personally, it's because I wanted to focus on Heart of the Swarm and I don't believe throwing something like a $10k prizepool at a potentially unbalanced beta is a good idea. What I'd rather do is have a fun one-day tournament with a smaller format that everyone will have the time to enjoy, exploring the possibilities that Heart of the Swarm has to offer and using top-tier players to do it. The fact that they're all living in the same house, practice together and know each other very well will hopefully lead to some highly entertaining and no doubt thoroughly BM matches. This is not a serious tournament and we hope it'll be very entertaining for the fans and a great way to round out the year with a positive attitude towards the future of SC2 in the next few months. I want to aim for a big SHOUTcraft Invitational when HotS launches. SCI has always been about crowd-pleasing above all else and I think HotS is the best way to do that. I suppose this is "technically" SCI5, but I consider this a transition event. The larger 8-? man format will be back in 2013.
Tune in!
HotS hype is ramping up and we're hoping this tournament between these excellent Korean players will showcase what the expansion has to offer. Be there for crazy builds, new units, awesome music and inter-house rivalry and BM.
Looks awesome John! Will there be in-house filming of the players - would love to see their reactions since they are living together and (possibly) playing in the same room! =D
I'm so lost in HotS. I always end up with a few of everything (Hellbat, Tanks, Bio, Mines, Ravens) - maybe this inspires me a little. Can't wait to see MMA with buffed Medivacs :D
I watched last night/morning Grubby play some of the most amazing and fun matches of Starcraft 2 in a long time, his excitement at the changes and that of the viewers only fueled some crazy games and styles.
I hope that this mini tournament can achieve even half of that in terms of fun factor, though I hope it can surpass it.
These should be some of the most interesting matches to watch in a long time. I look forward to this!

Here is the reality check. We had $5k left over after SCI4 (see post-mortem blog). We spent more than that on the team in November alone. Team-house is going to cost anywhere from $20k-40k in deposit ALONE. $5k is a drop in the ocean in comparison to what a team actually costs to run when they're going out to US and EU events. If it was embezzlement it must be the most ill-advised and planned embezzlement of all time.
That $5k is sitting around waiting for SCI5 when it does come along, which will be after HotS launches and hey, may very well be the first big HotS tournament.

Hell yah TB, looking forward to this tourney the the future ShoutCrafts. Also, I request that for at least one tournament you(and your possible co-casters) call the loser of the tournament the Dishwasher Terran/Zerg/Protoss please :D

Actually in Korea, the KeSPA teams have in house placing tournaments all the time, and the loser of these tournaments has to do the dishes. There was a celebration based on that fact in the Korean Proleague I believe. Forget who did it though.
@TB this is a great idea. I've been wanting to watch some high level HotS play for some time now! Keep doing what you do and help eSports grow!
Keep an eye on the thread for interviews in English and Korean with each player about HotS and what they think of their housemates starting Monday through to Friday.

Someone did it in GSL as well, dish washing ceremony :D
I was wondering if anybody had more details on approximately what time the tournament will run? The 16th of December TB time or Korean time? There's a big difference is all, and I have to work all day Monday Korean time

Haha, that seems hilarious. Comedy aside, I'm really hoping to see some awesome builds. The HotS videos by husky are somewhat lacking.
the prize distribution is awfully unfair, dishwashing for a week is worse than torture :O will definetly tune in! some of my favourite korean players :3
wow the format is awesome for this !!! kinda sad they can't use this in bigger tournaments since having to play 192302930 games is a bit too much.
Awesome news, TB! Was recently thinking about how much I missed Shoutcraft.
Will there be a chance of some tidbits from inside the house inbetween games to give it a more personal feel? Would love to see those guys messing around!

1. How is Heart of the Swarm looking so far for your race?
I haven’t been able to play yet. Once all the tournaments are over in December, I am planning to prepare for it.
2. What do you think needs to be changed before HotS release?
I heard that Terran wasn’t good. But I hope that in HotS, Terran will start out weak because in Wings of Liberty, Terran started out too strong and then little by little they got nerfed.
3. What do you want to achieve in 2013?
First, my personal goal is to win first place in a tournament at least 3 times. Second, I want the “younger brothers” [dongsengs] that I live with to have good results too! I hope!
4. Who is your biggest rival in the house?
What is this question?? You would know just be looking at our class difference that there can’t be any rivals??????? I’m just kidding hehehe. Everyone is a rival. Although it’s nice to live so intimately and close with them all, when we start practicing I want us to all be like rivals and have a more competitive mindset [not direct translation because it wouldn’t make sense; this is contextual]
5. Do you have any strange stories to tell about your time in the house?
A few days ago we couldn’t use water because of an incident where our pipes froze and exploded. We suffered a lot as the water that we took for granted wasn’t available for a few days. After it was all fixed, when I finally took a shower after days of not being able to, I realized that not only water but tears were falling from my face.
6. What do you have to say to your fellow house-mates?
Living in a house full of guys is harder than one might think. If issues arise, I would like for us to be able to resolve them, perhaps over a beer. That’s how we can last a long long time~ Gaming is good, but I want us to make more time to go out and exercise more and be more cultural. It’s better for our health and life balance. Let’s enjoy the rest of December and have a happy Christmas!

Wait a minute? MMA will start to practice HotS when the tournaments in December are done? But the Iron Squid finals are in January. Does he already know that he is out in the Ro16/Ro8 and he just spoiled it?

I'd be reallly surprised if the Ro16/Ro8 have already been played, since matches 4 and 5 for MMA's group were played post-infestor nerf (so recently). I doubt they've made it through all the groups yet.

Judging from TB's statement, the players have been living there for at least four months (even if it wasn't under the Axiom label back then). I guess, Genna and TB just started paying their rent when Axiom was founded.

He was crying of relief and happiness for finally being able to have a shower ... kinda of you'd never know the feeling unless you past through it.
1. How is Heart of the Swarm looking so far for your race?
I’ve played it a few times, but there seems to be no unit that can counter the Hydralisk… do they still want me to keep playing this game?
2. What do you think needs to be changed before HotS release?
If they don’t bring out a patch to balance [the races] I’m switching to Zerg.
3. What do you want to achieve in 2013?
Opportunity always finds me when I’m not ready for it. So if in 2013 it finds me again, even if I don’t end up winning first place [in a tournament], I want to play my best and have good performances to show to everyone.
4. Who is your biggest rival in the house? miya없이 4명이서 살때는 그냥 조용히 있었는데 miya가 오고 나서 하루에도 수십번 그를 때리고 싶어졌다.
Before Miya moved in and it was just the 4 of us, I had no issues with anyone, but after Miya moved in, many many times per day, the feelings of wanting to physically hit him arise.
5. Do you have any strange stories to tell about your time in the house?
It’s not that funny to us, but let’s just say we won’t gamble ever again…
6. What do you have to say to your fellow house-mates?
When we didn’t have water, although nasty smells oozed from your bodies, I endured that stink, just for you.
Been a fan of CranK since Cella streamed some in-house SlayerS games and I saw him demolish Puzzle with the most ridiculous micro. Nice to see things working out so well for him.
1. How is Heart of the Swarm looking so far for your race?
As of right now, Protoss is looking good. But since its HotS, I anticipate Zerg to be even better.
2. What do you think needs to be changed before HotS release?
A lot. Really a lot. I’ve written a lot of things about balance on the progamer feedback forums but David Kim never responds to them so I’ve given up on writing anything on the forums now.
3. What do you want to achieve in 2013?
I want to overcome stage fright. Lately, I’ve been mentally preparing myself.
4. Who is your biggest rival in the house?
I don’t have any rivals because I’m the best.
5. Do you have any strange stories to tell about your time in the house?

6. What do you have to say to your fellow house-mates?
Crank Ryung MMA Heart I will win this HotS event. Sorry, Crank, Ryung MMA and Heart.

Heart 1. How is Heart of the Swarm looking so far for your race?
아직많은게임을 해보지않았지만 스타2초반엔 항상 테란이좋았던거같아 그러므로 테란이 좋을거같다 하지만 <miya가 항상 블리자드에 메일을보낸다 그래서 걱정이다 !!> I haven’t played many games yet but the Terran always seems to be good in the early game in SC2, so I think Terran will be good but Miya writes to Blizzard everyday so I’m worried.
2. What do you think needs to be changed before HotS release?
D I wish Terran to become Imba.
3. What do you want to achieve in 2013?
In this past year, I had more feelings of wanting to do well, than actual winnings. Next year, I hope to have many winnings too.
4 Who is your biggest rival in the house?
I don’t have any, but I’m scared everyone might think of me as a rival
5. Do you have any strange stories to tell about your time in the house?
가끔씩 내기로 2:2 축구게임 내기를하는데 다들 승부욕이 너무강하다 그래서 이기는팀은 너무기뻐서 많은 세레머니와 상대방을 놀린다 반면에 진팀은 너무열받아하며 하루가지나도 한마디도안할때가있다 ex)mma We often play 2v2 soccer games and put bets on our games but everyone is so competitive so when the winners win, they get really happy and do ceremonies and tease the losing team. Then the losers will get mad and sometimes not talk to anyone for the entire day, example: MMA.
6. . What do you have to say to your fellow house-mates?
D I hope everyone does well in 2012, but above all, me.

TB next time you do interviews like this, if it involves art, learn from your mistake. The best (Ryung's) art comes last. Ryung #1 artist in the world. Don't give us Ryung's art first... That just ruins everyone else's art when it comes out later... Heart, MMA, and Miya's art just don't measure up to the pure talent that is Ryung's.
1. How is Heart of the Swarm looking so far for your race?
Hm, I don’t think there’s much change. I wish there were mines and if I can get one good mine execution, I think can do really well in the game. I’ve been practicing all three races in Wings of Liberty so if the one I’m using now isn’t good, I will switch right away!!
2. What do you think needs to be changed before HotS release?
I wish they would make Terran really strong. Since I’m good and confident at TvT, I want them to make Terran so strong that I am able to beat all the other races too.
3. What do you want to achieve in 2013?
I want to win the GSL twice but most importantly, in the GSTL team league, I want to win yielding the Axiom team name proudly!
4. Who is your biggest rival in the house?
I don’t have a rival at home. Since I’m the best player, I’m on top waiting for the rest of them to catch up. I wish that my housemates could practice hard and be as good as me.
5. Do you have any strange stories to tell about your time in the house?

Another time I used our toilet but then got yelled at by the building landlady. It was a sad day.
6. What do you have to say to your fellow house-mates?

TB can you contact your internet provider and have a nice (fucking rude as you can possibly be) conversation with them regarding what happened last night during Proleague so that doesn't happen again tonight during your well established and extremely well designed tournament you will be hosting tonight, please?

Because judging someone's play off of their recent performance during the stress of hating their life on a team and having no passion for the game during this time and finding and adjusting to a new team and renewing their passion in the span of a month is clearly the best way to judge their performance.

This is how you hype a tournament, viewer count is likely going to be very high.
Yeah I think so as well. Not compared to big tourneys obv, but for a small invitation it's really cool. Also gets some cynical brits, some husketeers and of course normal community!
I wonder why CranK got such early sentries and a mothership core. I think the advantage of the core is that you don't really need sentries anymore because those same pushes that used to be dangerous are much less so with the mothership's nexus cannon ability.
Heart stimmed to keep his energy low for the medivacs, avoiding feedbacks.
Also, I really don't like the new health bars. It's very hard to distinguish the health from the units, just because they have the same color. Would be lovely if you could turn it "normal" for future games TB
I think I like the healthbar colours. At first I was a bit startled, but I do think I like it, although I feel protoss shields should have a unique colour instead of the basic blue. Crank doing some nice defense of this multipronged harass from Heart, and now has a huge supply lead.

I agree with this. The teamcolored healthbars are worse than the default ones.

Hm something to remember is that they're playing with like a second of lag (based on CranK's games on stream), so their micro and such is going to be a bit sloppy.
Quick question: has the shoutcraft stream disabled viewing from mobile devices? Shoutcraft isnt listed on the ipad or iphone app - egmscl works fine, as well as the mlg stream
Decide to tune in, first thing I see is ryung typing "u die". Needless to say this tournament has a lot of personality. And TB rocking that awesome track list
I understand that pros are really interested in the new units/upgrades, but wouldn't Infestor/Ling/Bane into Ultras or BLs fare better than Roach/Hydra/Viper? Caduceus Reactor as I understand makes Fungal a lot weaker, but the trapping is what I think is more important, then the Banes can crash into the Bio.

Infestors are not very good in hots, infested terrans don't get any benefit from upgrades, fungal is a projectile, and the WOL nerfs to the IT egg health and range is in there too.
Vipers are good, Miya botched the final engagement badly. You could see how powerful good blinding clouds were in the earlier fights where it looked like he was about to die but turned it around.

I play Protoss and so I'm not very familiar with HotS TvZ but from what I've heard the Hydra/Viper combo is a very powerful composition against mech but doesn't fare so well against Bio. The Hydras are not particularly cost efficient when the new Medivac upgrade comes into play and it looked pretty easy for the Terran to dodge the Blinding Cloud. I think more use of Abduct to snipe off Medivacs would have worked out better.

They surelly will not be "winfestors" as in WoL, but still the "root"effect imo could be very important vs infantry. We gotta see how hots meta develops.

Widow Mine on the other hand seems really good and interesting for TvZ.
Wait till you see some poor terran try to mech vs zerg lol. Then you'll see a reason why.
Ya you re right, with infestors balanced in hots, viper should be the caster of choice vs mech.
swarm hosts aren't too bad either. Honestly I don't get it, it seems like some where along the "fix mech tvp" line they killed mech in tvz. Or considerably weakened it.

Roach/Hydra/Viper is the new mid-late game composition against Mech from what I've seen so far. But the advantages don't carry so well against Bio, seeing as it lacks splash damage, efficiency and speed (to an extent).

The mech argument is one that I'll never understand. If a Protoss player said "I want to win games making only Robotics units because I don't like making Zealots or Stalkers at all", people would not take it seriously.
Tanks are awesome, Hellions are awesome, Thors are awesome and all these units are viable. What's the problem?

The most iconic unit in SC for Terran was the siege tank and positional play resulting from it. As a spectator and player I miss it in TvP as the immortal renders every mech unit aside from hellions impotent. It's mech. Not only robo units.

Then the problem is the Immortal not Terran mech. Unfortunately I don't see Blizzard ever changing it.

To be fair, he is the only GSL-worthy player in the tournament, and making Ro4 doesn't hurt the resume.
Do you perhaps mean code s-worthy? Because Miya, Heart and MMA were all in code a last season
Hmmm, that does seem more reasonable, but Miya, Heart and MMA are all in Code B I believe, while CranK has never made a huge splash beyond a few interesting games, and is Code B. Just based on current GSL rankings, it is safe to say Ryung is the better player imo.

Heart and MMA were in code S last season. Heart got to the round of 16 too, so to say Ryung is the only GSL-worthy player seems pretty unfair.

Current results are far more important than the past ones, and I'm not really seeing GSL-worthy play from the other four personally. They are great players who all made their mark in GSL, don't think I deny that, but there is a reason why they are in Code B, let alone Code A/S.
Mech vs Zerg is so much more fun now, Vipers, Widow Mines and the new Hydras add so much more dynamic to the match-up. Nerfed Infestors don't hurt either.

Ironically, he built two Evo Chambers for the Viper Consume (or whatever its called), yet forgot to use them.

Why? It adds a nice dynamic where zerg can easily apply pressure in the midgame.
I think in there current form they encourage too much just sitting and waiting, there needs to be motivation for them to be moving around, though that may come with time.

Oracle seems to be the perfect opener for PvZ, scouting + harassment + lategame viability.
I'm surprised that Oracle production doesn't continue to the late-game. Time Warp is super good at holding off retreats and forced Miya to lose a lot during them.

Oracle costs 200 gas. You need that for tech and real units. So 3 or 4 is enough,
Hmmm Crank vs Ryung in the finals. Will a Terran finally win a Shoutcraft or will Crank keep the curse alive and for the 5th straight time a Terran takes second place? And will the once dominate Zerg be resigned to wash the dishes?

So far the widow mines and the uber medivacs seem to be stealing the show for terran. I was actually hoping to seem some hell bats, but it seems regular hellions are the better option?
Remember to notice the SponsorFlags on the scoreboard, Other Tournaments, take note! That's a simple way to give team/player sponsors more visibility, and thus, more reason to invest.
On December 17 2012 13:19 Belha wrote: Wow, HotS is a very cruel world with the widow mine.
Expect them to get used a lot less once players get used to dealing with them.
I don't know about that. They are a 75(?) mineral unit that can one-shot just about any unit in the game. Hard not to be cost effective with them and I'm not even seeing players using them optimally yet.
TvT in hots looks super exciting and the skill cap seems so high. There is so much to do and so much you can do well to increase your skill in the match up and all sorts of comeback potential. Great game.
Enjoyed the event and was well worth staying up until 6:30 for! Was indeed a nice thing to see the FFA end properly rather than the watch tower ending :D
