UPDATE! #3: Grand Lagoon has been replaced with Neo Planet S.
UPDATE! #2: THE FINAL DEADLINE IS THURSDAY, FEB 7, 11:00 PM EST Please make sure you have 1) Signed up on the HSL website 2) Signed up through email 3) Joined the Facebook group "HSL Coordinators"
Muspelheim will be replaced with Akilon Flats and Whirlwind updated to Whirlwind SE.
UPDATE!: Please also register your team at the website http://www.hsstarleague.com/ in addition to your e-mail registration.
Happy New Years!
Hello from the HSL staff here, and we hope you guys have had a great Winter Break and a good first semester so far. We’d foremost like to apologize for the huge delay and constant setbacks. As you guys may have heard, we have decided to start the season, but unfortunately without the promised new website. However, let's not allow this setback to stop us from having a great season 2!
As we will be using Battlefy to organize our league, we will revert to Season 0’s GSTL All-Kill format. Not only is it more convenient (no lineup feature), All-Kill encourages players to get together and support their teammates, due to the fact your team must have players available when your teammate falls and enter the fray. Furthermore, your team will be able to analyze the opponent and discuss who would be the most suitable player to go up next. These are some of the advantages of the All-Kill format.
Registration 1) Send an email to Hsteamleague@gmail.com with the following info - School name - City, State/Province - Players real full names, Character.Code - Time zone - Coordinator email, and any designated substitutes' emails
Note: Coordinators will be added to the facebook page, so please check there for all updates!
2) Sign up on Battlefy (This will take place once divisions are announced)
Schedule Registration runs from January 5th through January 31st at midnight. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED
The season will begin February 9th and run 10 weeks through April 13th with matches every Saturday at 7:00 PM local time. The Playoffs will begin May 4th and the schedule will go as follows:
May 4th: Round of 32 May 11th: Round of 16 May 18th: Round of 8 May 25th: Round of 4 June 8th: FINALS AND THIRD PLACE MATCH
Eligibility
Players must be currently enrolled in High School. Players must be in North America. Teams can only consist of players within one school. (Note: If may qualify for an exception if you e-mail us a petition explaining your situation and why you are not able to make a team within your school. Somethings we consider in this process include as follows: population of your High School, strong connections to nearby schools, etc.)
Divisions
Teams will be grouped with other teams in the same region. Divisions will be posted after later notice.
Regulations
Meet in Channel HSL
Each Team Match will be on each Saturday, at 7:10 pm in your time zone.. If the coordinator of the other team does not show up by 7:10 pm, they will automatically forfeit the Match.* If the coordinator's team does not start the next set (in-game) in 5 minutes, they will automatically forfeit that Set.* You may appoint a coordinator for a specific Match if you PM me or zalien with the following template:
[Name of PM: Coordinator Substitute] [Tell me: Your Character.Code Sub's Character.Code Your E-mail Date of Substitution MM/DD/YYYY School City, State/Province]
Example:
Coordinator Substitute
Yoshi.855 Lelouch.1337 yoshi@yoshi.com 07/07/7777 Yoshi Island High School Yoshi's Island, Yoshi Land
All players statuses must be set to Busy, or penalties may be imposed. Report to HSL staff for any problems/conflicts. After one of us receives a PM regarding a late coordinator/player, we will wait 10/10 minutes respectively before DQ'ing them/him from the Match/Set.
Maps
We will be using the map set from the most relevant GSTL map pool as of now, which would be from GSL 2012 Season 3.
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Whirlwind http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Cloud_Kingdom http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Entombed_Valley http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Antiga_Shipyard http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Daybreak http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Abyssal_City http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Ohana http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Planet_S http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Akilon_Flats
The starting map for each week will be pre-determined as follows:
1) Antiga Shipyard 2) GSL Abyssal City 3) Ohana LE 4) GSL Entombed Valley 5) Neo Planet S 6) Daybreak LE 7) Cloud Kingdom LE 8) GSL Whirlwind SE 9) Akilon Flats 10) Antiga Shipyard 11) GSL Abyssal City 12) Ohana LE
Map Version/Author Notes:
+ Show Spoiler +
Format
[Bo7] GSTL / Winner's League Best of 7
1) Both teams will announce their player rosters [Character.Code.Race]. The lower seeded team will present their roster first.
2) Both teams will pick their first player without knowing the opponent's choice. To do this, follow the steps: 1. Coordinator of the higher seeded team (the team above the other in the brackets) will create the game. 2. The Coordinator of the higher seeded team will then have his first player join the game. If the Coordinator will play first, do not have another teammate join yet. 3. When ready, the Coordinator will let the opponent team's Coordinator know, and the opponent team's Coordinator will send in his first player. 4. The first player of each team in the game (with the exception of the Host Coordinator if he is not playing) will be the players to play in the Set 1.
If there is a conflict, then you can resort to whisper/PM in SC2 your first player, and we will announce the players to both teams and that will allow you to start your Match.
3) The loser of the previous set is out for the rest of the Match. The winner stays in until he is defeated, of which he will also be out for the rest of the Match.
4) The first team to run out of players or lose 4 sets will lose the Team Match.
Players may change race between Matches, but not between Sets. After the first set, the losing team will pick the next map to play on. You can't pick a map already played on. All observers must be spectators except for HSL Referees. Each spectator is allowed only if both coordinators from both teams agree. If one of the players types "lag", or requests observers to leave, then everyone except the Referees are required to leave immediately. If a spectator on the opposite team remains in the game after 10 game seconds, the spectator's team may be subject to an automatic forfeit for that Set.
Playoffs
Single Elimination, Bo9.
More details to come. Each match will take place each saturday like in the group stages.
Casting
As always, if you want to cast, you're welcome! Anyone can cast at least once, regardless of skill. Only when we feel your casting does not meet our standards will be not "allow" you to cast next time.
Please PM me if you want to cast, with the following template (omit text in brackets):
[Date and Time of the Event: MM/DD/YYYY - 0:00 AM/PM - Event Name] [Character.Code] [Channel/Youtube/etc.] [How much of the night can you cast, how many other people do you want to cast with, what is your preference of the other casters, do you have friends you want to cast with you, other details/concerns, etc.]

Where can we look for nearby schools to join if we don't have enough people in our own school?

You don't need to be great to join! There are plenty of teams that have played as all bronze even, all you need are 5 willing people! We will have a google doc of all the teams that have signed up so that you can look for a team nearby.

Well in that case I may be able to get a few friends up and running! :D The goal in my school is still an organized team, any tips from anyone who has created an in-school team?

To be honest, don't expect your HSL team to become too organized. From what I've heard/experienced, it's a just a group of friends who all play SC2. Most schools (like mine) won't allow a SC2 club on campus, so a simple Facebook group with all your school's hsl players is probably as organized as you will get. I wish you luck if you do try to make your team more organized and official through school channels.
Honestly, HSL is a rather informal when it comes to team leagues. In the sense that, nobody is very much uptight and rude. And nobody would look poorly upon your team if it indeed only had 5 bronze players to showcase.

Actually, what I was aiming for is more of a 'strategy games club' (there is an audience for this in my small school, luckily) in which we do anything from Civilization to SC2. I was hoping the HSL part would just be something we could practice for at the times when we play our usual stuff.

From personal experience, our school did not allow it. That sort of clouds my perception; however, hopefully your school is more open minded and not as stressed out about the budget as ours is.

Ours is also stretched thin with their budget, but for the most part, there's nothing for them to pay for because they already own materials to do it. I've heard of schools that have done it, and there is a want for it, so I might as well try. I've been working on a application for it for awhile now.

as I've said before, most teachers are not accustomed to competitive gaming, so yeah it's really hard to start an official school club. But that doesn't mean you can't organize it. Holding team meetings and practices can allow a team with less "talent" to beat a team like pokebunny's
As regards to the formality of the league, the divisional play is rather informal, but playoffs is cut throat. expect teams to be composed of high masters and gm's.

So just to confirm, we are allowed to combine with nearby schools if we do not have enough people in ours right?
|
Ouch, so little time for my school to get a team. I'll try though, but if I can't get a team, I'll be cheering!~~
EDIT: What exactly is a coordinator? Can they be a player themselves? Can the team operate w/o a teacher, w/ the team basically being student run?

yes they can be a player (and it is recommended). one school had theirs be a teacher but its kind of pointless. the coordinator needs to be there during the match organizing the players and making decisions. (who to go next, rescheduling, etc.)

ya'll should make sure there are players at your school too. While right now its acceptable for certain nearby schools to merge if they lack players, we'd like in the future for each team to be an individual school. also dont forget to recruit and stuff, get your gamer friends into SC2 :D

How will you ensure that these players are actually high school players? It seems like cheating would be absolutely rampant.
That being said, I am organizing my team as we speak! :D It is tough as most of the player base graduated last year, but we have enough underclassmen to forge a relatively decent team.

Should we start registering on the site? It's asking for a school email, and I'm pretty sure most high school students don't have a school email like in college...

Hi, I could use a bit of help here. Me and my friend are the only people at my school that play sc2, I've tried showing the game to several people, but no one showed interest in the game. I've heard there might be one high school player, about 15 minutes from my school, but I don't know if he is still active. Even if we can all play, that only puts us at three. Can I play with people that I practice with online that are in highschool, even if they aren't local/go to my school? Can we play with less than 5 people and forfeit/double play people? Do I have any options to be able to enter this league?

So you theoretically play with 3 people I guess, worst case scenario.

Can I play with people that I practice with online that are in highschool, even if they aren't local/go to my school? Can we play with less than 5 people and forfeit/double play people? Do I have any options to be able to enter this league? Yea hi, I think with the new format it is the first team to loose 4 game or run out of players looses. So you theoretically play with 3 people I guess, worst case scenario. Alright, thanks. ^^ It's better than nothing I suppose.

Is there anyway to search for schools that need players? if not is there any school in maryland needing players
|
On January 15 2013 08:13 Cuddles_JW wrote: Is there anyway to search for schools that need players? if not is there any school in maryland needing players This would be a useful addition to the site. Like a "free agents" thing and a "recruiting schools" for schools with fewer than the min players

T_T I'm a GM protoss all alone in my school, no one plays starcraft here. Anyone in Pittsburgh area help me find a team?

How long till we should expect a response from the admin? I sent an email to the email listed in the OP.

Any updates on the map pool?

Can you update your roster after you summit it?

Hi, so my team has submitted our registration by email, but I see that we can now create teams through the website. Should we create our team on the website too or just wait for our email to be processed?

I believe they eventually will want both but the website is kind of buggy atm as they are still setting it up so, in the future yes but right now the email should be sufficient. They will probably inform us as to when we can set up our teams. From what one of the admins told me, for some reason on the site only admin accounts can make teams right now but you can have your players register to the site in the mean time so you can add them all into your team's roster on the site once you can make a team.
|
Hi guys, sorry for keeping your questions hanging, for now we will stick to e-mail but on later notice (if the website is done in time!) we may ask you to sign up through the website too (we'll give plenty of time so don't worry!)

I'm in 8th grade, but I go to a middle school/high school. Would it be possible to participate?
|
Ya, me and quake go to the same school, there are 4 of us that play sc at our school, and then we have 1 other friend who left this year, would he be able to play with us, and would we be able to play. I belive quake will email tomorow, once we clarify with other ppl.
|
I sent registration for our team last friday, I didn't get a confirmation email, so I just wanted to make sure that Foothill High School/Amador Valley High School was registered.

The OP said that the coordinators would be listed on the facebook page, when can we expect that to start happening? I feel it would do a lot to clear out the confusion.

We'll try to get to that ASAP! For now, we'll continue to post updates in this thread in the form of Edits and comments (check either or).

If we sent a registration email already, do you still want us to sign up through the website?

I was able to register our team on the website; however, it isn't set so that players can join. Will this be fixed?

So, I registered my team and members on the site. Should we still send the email?

ah i see, i dont like all kill format, any team with a GM will just clean up
|
On January 28 2013 16:01 terriBean wrote: ah i see, i dont like all kill format, any team with a GM will just clean up The nice thing about All-kill is even if you only had 3 players, you could still play without a crippling disadvantage. Not so much in the regular format. If you do go back to the regular format, could you please consider allowing the 2v2 players to also 1v1?
|
i think a lot of teams will fold if it's all kill, all kill rewards teams with 1 really strong player
|
Well, we wouldn't be able to even play if it's not All-Kill format, my team doesn't even really care about how well we do, we just want to be able to play.
|
perhaps something like all-kill for reg season and normal format for postseason would be good? It is just so many teams including ours are only able to play because of the all-kill format.

I've been encouraging my hsl members who register to be sure they include theirs.

This is the first time my school has ever done this. I am the coordinator for my school and my teammates and I have registered individually. Am I allowed to add them into the school team via registered teams on the hsl website or is that admin only?

Sorry for the lack of posts here -- thanks for the help insomni7
As regards to character codes. That is something we have always enforced and we'll be sure this season too that missing character or wrong character codes are penalized appropriately.

We're always going to be running into things like holidays, AP testing, etc. If you would like to reschedule you should contact the other team's coordinator to work something out, and then talk to one of the tournament admins.

K here are finalized Round robin setups. You'll notice there are slight modifications in divisions for some schools to compensate for new entries and to even things out. Geographically there are a few exceptions that make little sense to the division but every1 is +/- 1 hour to their timezone and in those extraneous situations there were additional reasoning usually for the placement. When you are logged in click my team, under the players bar there should be an "edit team" or "add players" or something like that in orange font. click that then add players by the email they used to register on the site.

We are going to wait until playoffs at the very least. Not all schools are going to have HotS immediately after the release so we have to be kind of considerate for them. When we do switch we will make an official announcement on the HSL site though so everyone knows ahead of time.

why not have a transitional period of like maybe 2 weeks? 8 weeks of WoL after the release of HotS is kind of silly.
I know my team will be inactive on WoL once HotS is released.

Special report: Individual games among the larger match may be played on HotS if both sides agree. But, if either side disagrees, it will be played WoL. Playoffs are 100% HotS though. If you have HotS but don't know how to switch to WoL you go to menu>options>gameplay>theres a drop down menu for which expansion you're playing on, select WoL/HotS to switch between the two. Playoffs set to start May 4th.
