I'm surprised people are predicting squirtle for second, he's taken a lot of losses to random foreigners like monchi, xigua and sortof and I have not seen him play well in a long time especially his trainwreck of a code S group.
Gogo Taeja!!! I'm actually a little worried if he'll make it through, seeing as how he's shown his vulnerability recently. Two TvPs, one of them squirtle, and a Kespa player...Not saying that I don't believe in Taeja (he's my FPL captain after all :D), but we've all seen upsets happen before. Hopefully not this time, though.
I put my bucks on Dream, not for the sake of the underdog, but last time I watched him he looked impressive. Really hopefull seeing him to top this group
Well honestly expecting Taeja and Squirtle to advance. Happy so long as Squirtle makes it. Rest I'm ok with either way. Hoping Trap, Shine, Dream or Happy will surprise me.

poor happy ;;
His existence feels so faint.
I dunno. For some reason, Happy is really good in the U&D format. He made it through in both season 4 & 5 U&D. His season 5 group was sort of weak but his season 4 group was pretty stacked (SuperNoVa, Creator).

Oh he's certainly strong enough, I'm saying that in a line-up between Waldo, Carmen Sandiego, Light, Alive and Happy, I'd probably notice Happy last.

No distinct play? 11/11 vs 3 hatch!! Never forget!!! (to be fair, GumiHo also did it a week or two later )
Don't be shocked if Dream makes it through. About a year ago in the GESL, idra, demuslim, and many Koreans said he was playing like one of the best Terrans in the world. Couple that with his dismantling of one of the best Protoss players in the world in Rain, and his advance is likely.
Trap should also advance.
3rd is too hard to call between Taeja and Shine.
Happy and Squirtle are the odd men out. Happy has never impressed me, and even when he streamed he seemed lackluster.

This just looks like the two obvious favorites only winning and the rest is flipped somewhat randomly. Anyway hard to disagree with a prediction but the thought behind it seems abit simplistic.

Lol, Dream losing every game? No chance in hell mate. He's better than Taeja, just you see :D
I probably won't be able to type out LRs today, at least not until SPL Samsung KHAN vs Woongjin Stars is over because I went ahead and made both threads since no one else had yet. I'm going to have to keep an eye on both streams to update and do polls so if someone else could do the LR for at least the first few games I'd appreciate it. It's a weekday so people usually need it in Europe because of work and stuff.

I'm watching 2 streams but from what I saw Trap went for fast expand into 4 gate pressure. Taeja opened hellion marine medivac and did some damage early. Trap tried to counter with his 4 gate but TaeJa was able to hold with some marines a bunker a tank and a banshee. then I was watching the other stream because of a ridiculous game in spl. i came back and taeja rode his early game advantage to an unloseable lead where he pushed with a marine tank army vs HT zealot protoss but hit before storm even finished and then Trap died
not 100% accurate but what I put together going in and out of the stream
Cuz the map is fucking amazing for blink obs. And you only got to see Bo1 in the last weeks (Proleague and Up and downs). And the meta for terran is so greedy (CC first into 2 rax or rax with 1 marine into 3 early cc)
i love how squirtle is constantly chronoboosting probes and longdistance mining the natural (well i mean he was doing it before he made his nexus)
ive been doing this sometimes in my games as well (high masters) during an allin its sometimes smart to use the nexus time because it can be chronoboosting out tons of probes over time and a probe within a minute will halfway pay for itself and in 2 minutes its like your probe was free
This really is one of the better contains I've watched. Often contains that last this long tend to get rolled by the defending army just growing to impossible strength and dropping/forcefield break their way out.
you beat these blink allins IMO by opening 1rax 1gas expand, the gas slows your CC slightly but gives you the option of getting fast siegetanks if you scout no nexus, and you get down your ramp with tanks instead of medivacs
EDIT: the power of the build isnt even the blink, its the forcefield stopping you from leaving your base when your army is big enough to kill the stalkers

a 75 mineral slower CC isnt the death of you, you can use the slightly faster gas to do some cool things. most terrans get the gas right after the CC, but if you get the gas right before the CC and you dont need to make more than 1 bunker if you scout a nexus and suspect 2base aggression because your factory/medivacs are faster

Till they blink in and snipe the tanks because tanks aren't good against blink stalkers in large numbers (let alone you wont even have a lot of tanks. Also the fact that the bio and medivac count would suffer drastically since you are mining on one base.
On January 07 2013 19:02 NovemberstOrm wrote: Only way to beat that build is siege tanks.
That's so expensive though, one viking to snipe the observer seems better imo.
by the time you make 2 vikings out of a starport the protoss force is so huge. getting a couple siegetanks with marines comes out way faster actually
dont scout a nexus = immediately go marine/tank which beats 1base toss
toss expands, stop making tanks and go bio, and you can pressure the tosses natural in a minute with a huge force
You'd be a little pressed to scout a protoss with or without nexus that easily. As a protoss I always have a single stalker with my 1 gate fe to prevent scouts and keep the terran in the dark.

now that i think about it you may not need to abandon the natural and you may be able to hold it with a 1rax expand (no gas) but it absolutely depends on the scout
you can open 1rax expand, and you MUST scout the protosses natural at exactly 5 minutes. possibly by sending out 2 scv's to scout at the same time or something. if your scout is denied you lose
if you dont see a nexus in the toss natural at 5:00, immediately make 3 bunkers in your natural far enough away to prevent your ramp from being forcefielded, and dont go for medivacs (too slow to come out vs 1base aggression). instead dont make the starport and immediately get a techlab/siegemode from your tanks and get 1rax(techlab) making marauders, 1factory making tanks, and 1rax making marines, while CONSTANTLY pumping scv's from your 2 orbitals since scv's trade well with stalkers
when the stalkers blink into your main during the small timing window before your siegemode is done, you can fight the stalkers with SCV's and marines and trade well against them. Sure, you do lose some scv's and marines, but considering the protoss didnt expand and you do not need to abandon your natural it should be a fight in your favor over time. Then eventually your safe your sitting on 2bases and the protosses natural is heavily delayed and you can go into bio at that point
when the "TSL Shine" came up, I almost cried. I'm not even sure why, but just thinking about hearing TSL in that voice for one of the last times ever just made me emotional. Sigh. I'm normally a hardheaded asian, but man.

3CC vs Toss is really ambitious lol. Being in a much lower league, I get away with doing the Bomber build every game and having a 80% TvP winrate.
I guess that'll change this ladder season now that I'm in Plat, which still is low but not low enough to get away with that.

I usually go 3 gate robo -> colossus, blink, 1 forge. It shouldn't work at higher levels I think but terrans are really really bad in diamond.
Trap's simcity working against him IMO. Bad idea to make it so that units have to walk all the way around all those gateways, then on top of that putting Templar tech in the area that units have to run all the way around gateways to defend.

I put it up to 10 MB....still nothing.
Oh well whatever, then I am not gonna watch this crap production. I will not update my flash player as it is buggy as hell for me. And if Gom doesnt work without it...well then they just lost a viewer.

I always felt he had lots of potential, i remember ages ago in his first appearance in code A he came within 1 map of advancing to code S, looked really skilled back then yet fell away. Good to see him stick at it, I hope to see him make Code S!

Yeah, I wish there was a button to catch up to live. When the stream buffers, it gets more and more behind and then will randomly jump ahead later on at an inconvenient time.

Try another browser or something - nothing special is required to view the stream as far as I can tell. Flash player is indeed a pain, sometimes

Yeah no...just sick of GOM where I need to DL extra players or update everything just that I am able to watch in 240p (At least that's what I assume it to be as it has been like this for quite some time)

probably animosity towards kespa fans who've showered LR threads saying their gods would never make such amateur mistakes, nor get supply blocked etc.

Yes it is. New Version is, as I already said, buggy like hell for me. Has lags, computer stops working with it and everything. So I downgraded it agan. What the crap is this, that their plaser only works with the very newest version, especially after I still have their stupid player installed.

its a theory where when flash/jaedong/kespa switch over they will dominate and it will basically be same people from bw dominance but just a different game. Atm ESF-kespa is fairly 50% so it is pretty much proven bullshit
Try to consider that the Kespa players play sc2 for ... not 1/4 so long as the first hour sc2 pros
They're also not doing so well in SC2 except in their own league that uses ridiculously imbalanced maps. A few players shine, generally KeSPA players have been disappointing though.

Don't really get what the animosity against KeSPA there. A lot of ESF players have made similar mistakes. (Genius has forgotten Thermal Lance before, countless players have overextended and made timing and judgment errors)/
I think it's just people being annoyed by the kespa fans, nothing wrong with the players themselves of course. Although kespa fans and esf fans have both been behaving much better lately.

They've been playing for over half a year in the same meta as everyone else, it's really a non-issue at this point.

complaining about imbalance maps when it's a bo1 format with player selecting their maps is retarded. Most top tier kespa players have really good results too.

No it's not and no they do not. "Top tier kespa players" are Flash, Rain, CJherO, Fantasy and the likes in my eyes. Rain is the only one of those who had a really good result with his Ro4 finish in GSL. I'm not complaining about the balance on those maps, I'm just saying that results on those maps don't mean anything overall. If KeSPA terrans have great results in PL because they get sent on Arkanoid a ton, that doesn't mean anything. Did they ever play a zerg on that map? Lol, no they didn't. Currently PL results do not indicate skill overall. Flash all kills EGTL on reasonable maps, that does indicate skill.
You can have a great overall score in PL and look brilliant during it, if you only get sent out as a sniper vs certain races or on certain maps it doesn't mean much.

Are you on drugs? Plenty of zergs played on that map. ZvZ also was played.
I don't think Trap is that bad off. I like how he techs while defending, he will have a great composition soon, while Shine keeps pumping supply inefficient units.

he's almost there.
Almost
Roaches and corruptors isn't that good vs stalker-immortal-archon!
Hahahaha, silly Shine. He had such a huge advantage but he insisted on shoving unit after unit on Trap's well defended position. Instead, if he had teched to hive and infestors, he would've won a very easy victory.

Stupid format as well, I guess. And also a stacked group.
Well they wouldn't be here if they'd just won all the required Bo3s.
I'm not really getting all these "stupid format" comments. Is it because it's Bo1? Does that make team leagues bad too?
Well, the format people really want is that the player they are a blind fanatic of gets a seed into Code S which is then followed by games in which the result doesn't matter.
wow, poor dream, was in such a great position. But Taeja's superb macro and decision making (not counting the dodgy attack that gave dream the lead ) really got him back into the contest very quickly.
I'm glad some players started using yellow as team color now, guess they noticed pl guys do it. I hate green/red/blue, can't see shit without stronger color mod.
I disagree when ppl say Taeja has good decision making. Similar to this game, in his game vs Happy, he botched an attack which put him behind. But his superior mechanics pulled him through both games.
However, I reckon if he faced someone with similarly good mechanics, he would've lost both games.
Looks like Taeja got that fire back after having the team get stomped by Flash. Their results are polar opposites of one another (for Proleague and GSL up and downs).

purple should be banned on cloud kingdom but they already let Dream use it. makes it a pain in the ass to see on the minimap

It's neat but it would have been more impressive to get 8 of them in Code S without having to do up/downs. It was entirely possible because all 8 of them were in a different bracket, but only Mvp succeeded.

EDIT: Because he's beaten both the other players at 1-2 who could theoretically tie him in map score.
Actually he still depends on shine. If shine wins against him and against dream, he would be third since he would have lost to shine.

He had 3 ports right, but really didn't build enough out of them. And his Ravens did nothing. It's like everything he build out of them was 30 seconds late. I dunno, bit weird. Good game tho.
I'm at 16' in the game on HQ stream when it it goes buffer mode one more time then just black screen when I refresh So I got to SQ... black... SQ Free... and it's 26' in the game and I just see the GG fuck...

Built tech labs and ravens instead of vikings. Right idea, but didn't have the time for the ravens to build up energy.
It would/will be so hard to balance late-game between zerg and terran. If the armies are equally strong, terran would be so imba in late-game. Perfect vision, no-scv economy & map-hack.
Just woke up, sounds like Shine has to have Squirtle win to advance. This is interesting considering Shine had to play games in U/D matches before that had no meaning for him personally, but they got other plays to advance through.

But zerg can also rebuild much faster. So even if it is even army trade, zerg has its own advantages.

I didn't watch the games but Shine is an unknown teamless player whereas TaeJa has been the best terran in the summer of 2012 and Squirtle was the top toss of the early to mid 2012...
So it's kinda expected to see them do well compared to Shine.

Actually it doesn't matter, squirtle probably just testing a build he'd wanted to try all along. He was already in Code S, if he loses Taeja gets code S too, so why not? It's not like there was anything for him to lose.

Not over quite yet, looking at the rest of the matches, looks like Shine has to beat Taeja and he needs Squirtle to beat Trap. If Trap beats Squirtle, then he also needs Dream to beat Happy to make it a 3 way tie. So he still needs an assist here.

Laughed at this so much. That was what I think Squirtle was going for, just trying out a crazy build, even after seeing the 5 bunkers he just went for it anyway, cause YOLO!!!

At least it isn't Sting, you know he would be going for the three way tie and then playing the maximum amount of tie breakers to get into Code S.
I don't listen when they talk about the permutations for these groups. I prefer not to think. It's probably not as confusing as i suspect it is, but it's confusing enough that i switch off instantly and start browsing the interwebs.
but either happy and dream won against trap, so i think this game is useless. edit: im talking about trap chances to go to wild cards, as i see it is 0%
EDIT: I'm so glad my boy (Taeja) already made it through. All this fuckin' theoretical tie-breaker scenario math is too much for me. Went through enough of it last night waiting for MC to get out of his group (which he thankfully did!).

A group format with 6 players virtually always has these awkward scenario's. They should at least put a prize per won game or make it matter more if you end up first or second etc.

Yeah, placement should always have some more incentive than simply advancing with this kind of format.

Well, to be fair. What incentive can they give. If it is prize money, they would have to give it to players that made it via Ro24 since it would be weird if you can earn money in U&D but not if you get straight through. And groups in Code S are in the 'tier' system and then randomized. Not sure whether you can give players a seeding advantage either.

The result of the game didn't matter so they didnt play it. If Shine had one, he stands alone in 3rd with a 3-2 map score. If Shine had lost he would be tied with Happy at 2-3 but he beat Happy head to head so he finishes 3rd either way.
The recommended games section in these U/D threads is always so shit. Anyone have a list of the top 2-3 games from today? Personal opinion is fine, just would like to see which, if any, were worth watching.

I would recommend the Happy vs Trap game. Not because it was an epic game or anything. And both sides had some sloppiness. But Happy had a very interesting strategy.
That Squirtle vs Dream game was sick! Such a well played contain. Too bad Shine vs Taeja wasn't played, that could've been a great match I think. I like these results, the top 3 I wanted in the order I wanted.

I don't think he was screwed just by the h2h system, but rather by the overall format... if he got to face Shine last and on Antiga Shipyard instead of first and on Whirlwind then that would be so much better for him. The fact that there are such arbitrary instances of luck says a lot, especially when it can't be mitigated by things like map vetoes and a Bo3 loser picks next map.
Bo1 round robins leads to a lot of dependency on map luck and this format really isn't too good. It's unfortunate... especially since Happy doesn't really have enough fans to argue his case for him as compared to Flash. =[
