There has been much dismay about a lack of Open Brackets in the StarCraft II scene and in the eSports scene in general losing it's openness.

Heart of the Swarm Live Open Bracket 10:00 AM PST March 29 2013 at IPL6 Signup
The map pool has been decided and we will have 5 maps in the Bo3, single elim bracket, with 1 veto for each player: GSL Akilon Flats KeSPA Neo Planet S TPW Phantasm Blizzard Howling Peak Blizzard Cloud Kingdom
The winner of each Online Qualifier will receive flight and hotel to compete at IPL6 in the Heart of the Swarm Invitational.
The top 4 players of the Heart of the Swarm Live Open Bracket will receive spots in the Heart of the Swarm Invitational.
We are also here to announce additional information on IPL6:
Yup. MLG is gonna have to really bring the thunder if they want to compete with this level of flexibility. I know we're all a bunch of entitled jerks, yet the IPL guys seem to really have a handle on the whole "the customer is always right". It might not be accurate, but I have a feeling it's gonna work out pretty well for them.
Edit: With that said, I guess I do question the prize distribution. 24x more for 1st place rather than 5th is a little disconcerting. Always something to improve I guess On the whole, this looks awesome.
Players who are already qualified for the HotS Invitational can play in the main WoL IPL6 event. However, the HotS Open Bracket will overlap with matches in the IPL6 WoL Main Tournament.
Therefore, a player will have to choose either the WoL Main Tournament OR HotS Open Bracket.
The Open Bracket will take place on Friday (1 day).
The ironic thing is IPL started this no open bracket thing first with no open bracket at IPL 5. Now they're taking pot shots at MLG for no open bracket. So, if I have it right, they valued the open bracket to find stars like scarlett at IPL 4, but then didn't value it anymore for IPL 5. However, they still don't value it for IPL 6 for their WoL tourney, but do value it for their Hots tourney. I think that's how it goes in their valuation system.

It is the same format as IPL5. Anyone can play in them.
That is still not an open bracket at the live event, which was missing at IPL 5 and is still missing at IPL 6 for the WoL tourney. I like both MLG and IPL, but it's clear that MLG gets more shit for everything they do, when IPL can do the same things such as no open bracket at IPL 5 and not much noise is made about it. I think it stems from MLG trying the PPV thing which is something people still haven't forgiven MLG for.
I had a feeling once Kevin posted the mention of the open bracket on Twitter, it was a bit of a push at MLG. I like how they are incorporating open bracket and HotS without forsaking WoL.

Totally different scenario than what we are seeing unfold with MLG Winter. You had to play in the qualifiers at least to get into the tournament (and they had quite a few), so at least you could get in that way. What MLG is doing is making it STRICTLY INVITE which is what people are ticked about.
I honestly think live open brackets aren't needed. They're a plus, but I think online qualifiers are more open than open brackets because people actually have to go to the event, and that can be tough for a teamless player or one who's in a small team. They can give a second chance to players though, so that's the plus.

Yes, we will contact those who sign up for Open Bracket by email to collect additional information before the event.

Guessing because people whined over the IPL5 qualifiers being in weekends(which hurt the pros). Cant please everyone
This is my personal opinion of what could be a pretty good map pool, each map chosen for some different reasons--and it would certainly create a lot of variation in build order based on the maps. Feel free to discuss and/or disagree, you know where to find the mappers. :D
Careful -- Images are large. But you already knew that!
wait i see only 7 slots for the hots tournament ( there is 3 qualifiers, the winner of each goes + 4 ppl qualify in the live open bracket ) where is the 8th slot? am i missing something :D

This is what I wanted to watch. GOOD RIDDANCE MLG!! I will be watching IPL from now on!
and btw The customer is always right
Weeell technically IPL removed their open bracket first with IPL5, now MLG is doing it. The difference though is IPL replaced the open bracket with open online qualifiers so that the main event could be more streamlined and organized and (from what I can gather) MLG is just doing invites.
I kinda have mixed feelings about the whole open bracket vs open online qualifiers. From a spectators perspective at IPL5, the online qualifiers really helped keep the focus on the stage events, and imo it was a much better event. From IPL4 you had a lot of cool players and teams in the open bracket, but it made the event confusing. Most of the popular players were in the open bracket so you had this weird thing where the stage games were going on, but people were watching the games in the open bracket room etc.
IMO, as much as everyone loves open brackets, I think the open online qualifiers were the right way to go (at least for the main event) unless an open bracket can be done in a way that doesn't create a logistical nightmare. I am somewhat interested as to why IPL is doing a minor step-back by adding the Open-bracket for the HoTS event. It could be a jab at MLG to gain more viewers/support, or it could be that since it is a smalle/side event it is easier to manage, or it could just be the easiest way to put players in the event without having to schedule too many online qualifiers on top the the WoL qualifiers.
Either way, it will be nice to have a small open bracket and see who shows up. Though I wonder what IPL will do with IPL 7&8 now, if they go back to the purely open online or stick with the partial open online, partial open live.
On February 02 2013 13:25 Shew wrote: So the entire HotS tournament will take place on 1 day?
I assumed that was just the open bracket? But I guess I wouldn't be to surprised if it was only one day.
I thought the open bracket WAS the tournament? what else would there be
The top 4 from the open bracket move into the 8 man HotS main tournament, which I assume takes place on Saturday or Sunday. The other 4 slots come from the 3 online qualifiers, and 1 unknown spot. That's what I've gathered so far.

If anyone can play in all the qualifiers I would play in the korean one since that's like the only one I can play in lol ^^.
Yeah open qualification! IPL isn't lazy like... an organization that shall not be named!
Great to see skill valued over a popularity contest. I'm assuming that there will be an 8 person live invite-only part - 4 from these, 4 from open bracket?
On February 02 2013 13:23 vthree wrote: Why not just make the announcement without a jab at MLG?
Because what MLG did deserves to be jabbed? They basically justified not having a qualifier because it's too hard to have online qualifiers during a beta - well guess what? IPL is having 3. Lol.
Nice to see an open bracket come back. I can see why IPL5 was moved to online qualifiers and no open bracket cause I enjoyed the event either way. So in that sense, I'm fine with IPL6 WoL being online qualifiers as well. Just brings a higher level of competition to the event.
And IPL5 was probably the most stacked 72 player bracket for a foreign tournament. Having large open brackets mean there are tight scheduling problems that can arise as well as the need for more staff and refs, so I can see why MLG avoided it for their first event and commend IPL for doing a small open bracket so that it appeases fans and players without overburdening time and cost with the WoL tourney and IPTL happening.

As we've seen in the past an Open Bracket at a live event is awesome for the spectator but I think for the event casting it, broadcasting it, bracketing is a fucking organization nightmare. And I would think for the players its kind of an emotional roller coaster where they kind of never know exactly what time there playing. And it's nice for us seeing underdogs overcome the professionals but SC2 can be so random sometimes with Cheese's and BO win's it can really suck for a professional to get knocked down to the loser's bracket very early to a scrub. Just like everything else there's Pro's and Con's to every format and every event is different.
@ChaosArcher....There will always be flamers no matter what you do...So don't think IPL has gotten off the hook by having at least one open bracket...There will be Scheduling problems and the haters will come out in droves even they everybody demanded an open bracket...Everybody should know by now that the SC2 community is the community of pitchforks and Molotov Cocktails....Big Bada Boom
I am actually quite surprised this didn't sell out already. I know its not the same thing as an MLG open bracket (especially considering single elimination), but with everyone complaining about lack of an open bracket for MLG, and only 64 spots for IPL, its just a little surprising. If it doesn't sell out soon, then I think everyone just lost the right to whine about the lack of an opportunity to compete in an open bracket (players/teams), yes?
IPL can I get an answer to my question on if you can play in the qualifiers regardless if you are from there?
Example can I play in the korean qualifier or can koreans play in the na qualifier? Or are you restricting it to where only NA players can play in NA qualifier, korean in korean, etc.
I just noticed, but what happens when a player who chooses HotS drops WoL? Is the spot taken by someone else who got a top placement in a qualifier, or are they just getting appropriate replacements?
I can't believe 2 weeks after Hots release ipl6 will be played on Wol :/ I certainly not gonna watch that and i am pretty sure they will lose tons of viewers.

What? I'm so bored of watching WOL, I can't wait to see all the new creative HOTS build the pros come up with. Unless they all turn out to be the same and awful (like fast Hellbat drops)... I can't wait!

So, since frank seems to have forgotten about this thread I'm going to assume this is in WoL...though i wish it wasnt (Edit: talking about qualifiers, starting tomorrow...assuming they are WoL)

Won't it have both? The 'main' event (bigger prize pool) will be WoL with qualifiers (a lot of the spots have already been filled) and the open bracket (side) event will be HoTS.

Obviously I am not apart of IPL, but what makes the most sense is that you have to LIVE in the region you are signed up for.. because you receive flight and hotel. So yes, you can be a korean living in NA and signed up for NA, but only NA and not korea..Or you are an american and live in Korea so you play in the korean qualifier.
So you can only sign up for 1 qualifier..for the place in which you live. Ie. if you sign up for the NA qualifier they will only give you a ticket from somewhere in NA.

Single-elim for the Qualis.
Our rule is that you can either play in the region you'll be living now until the event, or you can play where you have citizenship (ie. HuK could play in NA or Kr, Polt could play in NA or Kr). Once you play in one, you can't switch.

Pros prefer that they are at weekday times. We held an Amateur qualifier on the weekend for the WoL event, but sadly don't haven enough seeds for the HotS Invitational for and Amateur quali.

I was actually asking about the open bracket for single or dbl elim, but that's good to know too...see you guys in less than 12 hr!
Say if someone qualifies for the WoL bracket, would they also be able to play in the HotS open bracket as well? Let's say Creator or SuperNova or someone wanted to play in the open bracket, would the matches overlap, etc?

They said earlier in the thread that it would interfere iirc. Can't remember but I know they said something about it in this thread.
Are there any plans to cast todays qualifiers? The only thing I can see from IPL on the TL schedule today is the esf-qualifier, and on IPLs schedule there is nothing SC2 related until IPTL tomorrow.
I will be watching the HOTS tourney over the WOL, thats for sure ^_^
Can't wait to see what NA/EU have to offer in that. As im pretty sure it will be all Koreans in the WOL later stages (maybe even the whole tournament) as everyone else is playing HOTS...

Therefore, a player will have to choose either the WoL Main Tournament OR HotS Open Bracket.
The Open Bracket will take place on Friday (1 day).

With the way IPTL worked out, we'll be casting Korea on Friday and EU and NA next week! I'm excited for our first HotS broadcast on Friday!
Be sure to take look at TPW Phantasm, one of the new maps to be featured in the IPL HotS tournament. It is available now to those with HotS access, as well as on WoL NA.

And that the HOTS open bracket will be double elim, since that was how the last open bracket was (ipl4)
IPL staff are off today, i'm sure everything will be updated tomorow
I asked this over a week ago, they aren't answering..taht wasn't he second time i posted it...stating my assumptions
Still no bracket or other information..also assuming we meet in channel IPL..but now I have to do some sort of "optimization" so don't know if I will even be in on time (Edit:11:18am PST)
If we aren't responding on a specific thread message us direct! We'll get it for sure.
These qualifiers are in the HotS clients. Meet in channel IPL at the designated start time. glhf
Well I tried the e-mails and got no response so any chance you can answer my question about can anyone sign up to all of the qualifiers or just the region you live in?
Would assume only your region because there's only one server in HotS anyway.... there would be no point of separating otherwise

It's single elim, says so on the buying pass page. ^^

Well, to be fair the EU Terran participants were Strelok, Goody, Morrow and Pro7ect. Not exactly the players you'd expect to qualify for IPL. Snute/Bly are deservedly in the finals.
Kas and LucifroN haven't fully switched/practiced enough and Thorzain/Demu/Beasty/Happy/BratOK/Marine didn't play, i they all played you could have considered it embarassing, with this bracket it really isn't.

Must be because they don't know how to abuse terran :o.
Ok, I think Terran is a bit OP right now against zerg. Hell, even the Korean terrans say so.
But seriously, you and sitromit were the 2 main anti-whiners against zerg whine. So why do you guys whine so much knowing how annoying balance whining is?

And we have to remember that in HoTS, terran early and mid game were buffed. And the major difference between Korean terrans and foreign terrans have always been the amount of early mid game pressure Koreans terrans put on. So it is not surprising that HoTS will make bigger difference for Korean terrans.

Nah, he has TaeJa in round 3...
edit - RagnaroK 2-0 DRG... Wut.
I think Ragnarok was the top zerg on the HoTS ladder for a few days. Not sure about now, but last week he was like the only zerg in the top 25 of GM

Yeah, Squirtle is CannedHeat... Click Participants (121) to the left of the bracket. It's funny because Oz told Squirtle about the qualifier but didn't even show up for it...
Also, game07game07@naver (뿌우마) translates to ppuuma in google translate... and there's no EGPuMaRC in the bracket.

Well, the ling bling phase probably isn't that different. But once you get to the mid game, both mutas and hydras were changed so it will have some effects.
TaeJa vs. Lucky and Creator vs. ZerO seem to be taking a while... Especially the latter because according to foreign players in Korea all ZerO does is all-in...

viOLet vs. Sleep taking forever... Does Azubu have a team house? Maybe they have a problem like HerO and PuMa had playing in the international WoL qualifier because they sit next to each other in the EG-TL house...

Considering 11 Korean zergs (compare to 3 terrans and 4 protoss) already made it for the WoL main event, I am not surprised.
I mean you had True, Golden, Violet,JookTo, HyuN, Monster, Lucky and Ragnarok. Even if it was WoL, I think only HyuN and Voilet and maybe one of Monster/Lucky would make Ro16s. Not saying that zergs don't have trouble in HoTS, but this qualifier is not a good sample to look at.

You don't consider Life a top Zerg? He got 2-0'ed by Puma... Yeah, Puma... I guess the reason Puma's proleague results are so bad, is because he has been secretly practicing only HotS for the past 6 months...

Life's account has 180 games played, Puma's has 60. Life's in GM, Puma is in Master's.
Both games were long, 22 and 33 minutes, Reaper opening.

And Life's strength has always been his ability to 'abused' lings. And I mean that in a good way, just like how Mvp 'abused' ghosts. And now, lings actually have a true hard counter in the hellbat. So Life will probably have to make a bigger adjustment than more zergs.
