Thanks opterown, you are making it easy with your LR resources thread. By the way, you should edit the LR calendar and a link to the tutorial by lichter into the LR resources OP, since it is sticky.
I really, really want to encourage others to make the LR threads for the next days. You might think the community doesn't need you, but it does. If you always wanted to do something for the community and don't know how, start here. Especially for everyone still in high school (Gymnasium) that has the time to follow the WCS anyway.

Ret and Strelok I believe.
TitaN does not seem to have reached the level he was at during WoL, and the same goes for Thorzain after his DreamHack performance. Ret is one of the best Zergs in Europe at the moment, and Strelok seems to be on the up once again.
|
Ret 0-2 Strelok Titan 1-2 Thorzain (I have no idea about Titan's current status, so I'm gonna lowball him. A good Titan advances)
Strelok 1-2 Thorzain Ret 2-1 Titan
Strelok 2-1 Ret

Thorzain and Strelok please because I like Terran the most and I'm selfish muahahahaha
|
I think Strelok is favoured against Ret while I can't predict TitaN vs ThorZaIN at all. TitaN hasn't hit his stride yet, but neither has ThorZaIN. TitaN lost to Noname recently, but Thorzain managed to lose to Verdi. They both look relatively weak, so I think both Ret and Strelok will make it out.
Then again you can never count out Ret's unmatched ability to somehow lose games or ThorZaIN's clutchness, or TitaN's ability to surprise people with build orders they aren't prepared for.
I think Ret and Strelok are at least the strongest players in the group at the moment, but they're not likely to advance without taking a few scratches in the process.
I'd say the first two matches will tell us how the group will go as it will reveal the current shape of the players I'm not quite sure about yet.

In any case Ret has to beat Strelok or Thorzain to advance which will be pretty hard to do since I don't think his ZvT is good enough.

Strelok looked pretty good with his mech style in the past weeks and I think he has a good shot at beating Ret, but Thorzain hasn't looked particularly impressive in TvZ for a very long time, I don't think it's less than 50:50 chances for Ret.

Oh wow, a regional WCS event with all region-specific players!
Seriously though, this is gonna be awesome I can't wait to watch. It's so hard to pick a favorite in either of these matchups, and I really think TitaN has some serious unrealized potential.
|
ThorZaIN & TitaN to advance ! I believe those two have the level in both my head and my heart.
|
Ret and Thorzain advance. Even though Thorzain didn't have a great dreamhack, I think he will be ok since he knew his group before hand so he can prepare.

I have not seen Titan play in an absolute age, interested to see how he's doing these days.

This one should be close. Last chance for Thorzain to show off his Korean training.

We'll see how well Titan's afro has improved in HotS.

Is putting the stream up on TL really that hard? They failed at this last time too, I think.

I'm rootin for Strelok hard.
Anyone know where I can find the video of him kissing the interviewer at IPL3? It was the best starcraft interview i've seen. Can't find it though.

Is it my phones, or is there a slight "wind"/"whistle" echo-kind-of noise (only in the left ear!) on the English stream? It's okay with me, I only ask, because I got very worried for the phones. Can't get the same effect with other audio so far.
edit: forgot to add it's only the left channel

Yep, for the volume is on the right, luckily i am not using phones.

so passive, it's like i'm watching throzain play

without talking bad aboud WCS NA, Axeltoss seems like a funny caster but without any knowledge, and axlav a pretty bored analyst with more older strats kaelaris knows so much about the scene and tod is one of the top skiller in EU who have deep knowledge ... EU so far outclasses NA in casting class by a huge amount hope NA can catch up but i think they need a) get skilled (gogo let them train more and watch more games) or change another cocaster in
ps: kr still best ofc ^^ but you cant beat tastetosis

That split micro from ret letting one viper die
Oh man, WCS Korea spoiled me today.

Kinda underwhelming game by Ret. I would've liked a BL transition vs. Streloks composition.

it appears that Rets queens are purely for anti air o_o?

Cool mech game i suppose haha

That wasn't really a good game, although it was nice to see blinding cloud put to some use.

ret had lots of transfuses but didnt use them. Used maybe 30% of them tops

Apparently so, really disappointed with Ret that game, his game is way better than what we just seen

That was not very well played by ret there. Hydra/Roach/viper deSTROYS this style.

Nice game by Strelok, but Ret not looking to good

Very nice mech play from Strelok. Mass mine lategame, didn't think it would be so effective.

Yeah it was ok but it would have been amazing if he had dropped those hellbats when they were over the natural with ~30 drones instead of running it to the third.

To be fair it doesn't to that much against a Mech army anyway. Which brings me to the point why did he build this many Ultras anyway ?

Those unsieged Tanks performing so much better then when sieged up breaks my heart...deathball craft.

Strelok is awesome. I would love if both Ret and Strelok advance.

Funny how WCS KR and NA starting halved the viewer numbers for Europe. Or maybe it's just hype is running out.

Ah, ToD have really grown in to the caster role. Could he even be the next bonjour, perhaps?

ret... plz..

Ret looks dead this is horrific damage so soon
|
|
|
wow what was Ret thinking
|

No wonder Ret thinks terran is overpowered.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ret just ggs at this point.
|
I am so disappointed with the WCS EU!!! How is this even possible? The stream is late and the observers are causing so many issues.I understand that in EU we need lot of obs to be able to stream in different langueges, but if this is to try compete with WCS KR(GSL) we are surely gonna lose sooo bad!!! We need the production to be better and organizers to take it more seiously.I can understand how are we waitong to be the right time and there was NO MASIN STREAM.Bad for ESL.I think Dreamhack would do it much better.Same as the MLG who are screwing it up everything, beginning with bad and rare casters.
I know the quality of the games are not so good, but with this kind of production it wont be worth working so hard to achieve anything. At the end the prize pool is the same, but I think blizzard screwed this and its shame for Koreans to share the prize pool with such a bad tournaments.

Little bit of both. Mostly Ret looks really lackluster though. His decision making doesn't look promising at all.

Probably the latter. Wrong unit choices all round.

He lost a ton of drones to the hellions and made roaches. From there on it was just a 15min deathanimation.

Ret playing like it's the first time he met mech and making up a plan vs it as the game goes on.

Ret threw away an obnoxious amount of units that game, pretty disgusting he was in it for that long in the first place.

As expected. Now it's time to see how Titan looks. I'm quite curious.

Strelok looks quite strong at the moment, hoping he advances.
Also, I wish they'd fix the audio balance. Think they had the same issue last time I watched aswell.

Yes, Titan will all in him 2 times in a row and win both games. One will involve a proxy oracle build.

From Korea, the latency isnt as bad as people make out, a second delay maximum but at the top top level that's alot.

Terran can just make some simple units with little to no miro required that force the zerg to use extreamly high levels of micro to defeat it. You can see that ret is trying to micro in 3 places at once, still make injects for macro and scout for drops, where even if Sterlock looses a couple mines or a drop ship the cost is very low relative to what it takes to defend it. I think Ret just got stretched too thin.

Thorzain had 3 ccs cs 2 nexus and his army was way bigger, if the bulk of your army marine marauder hellbat which hardly requires any gas and you retain medivacs, you aren't really that behind with 3 mules, even after 45 dead scvs.... also titan's eco was damaged too. Thorzain would have been ahead in eco in 1 minutes if if titan didn't attack. now the attack itself was pretty bad that's true. 48 probes + 3 Nexi vs 24 SCVs + 3 OCs actually. my bad, didn't see the 3rd nexus. still he was ahead on army and arguably even a better army than titan. sufficient amount of vikings, blue flame hellbats vs zealots etc. he wasn't that ahead, if he was ahead at all. pretty sure he canceled the third to hold the attack
i didn't remember the 3rd nexus be active either. if that's true thorzain was ahead by far even after losing 40 scvs and titan did a desperation attack recognizing that

It's getting kinda sad how every non-KR tournament turns into a circlejerk over how "bad" the players are. I don't remember it being nearly this bad back in WOL.

To be fair, today's Code S group wasn't very good either. Shine had disappointing macro.

Again, people need to give WCS more time to weed out the weaker competition. People like Naniwa and Stephano will hopefully stick around, and the transferred Koreans will bump out the weaker foreigners.
The only concern is if it turns into 3 WCS Koreas, but hopefully there will be a few foreigners who have their shit together to keep it interesting (I love Code S, just not 3 of them).

Games between foreigners can easily be as entertaining as games between Koreans. Close back and forth games or interesting strategies can be really entertaining.
But today's games were just bad so far. Ret looking like he never played against Mech at all, Thorzain looking as if he was focussing on something else but not the game (losing 40 SCVs to DTs in game 1, not microing his units at all in game 2) and Titan's decision making was really off as well.
The games so far were just not good. Maybe there will be some better games later today. At least I hope there will be some.

Emp is -100 shield and -100 energy right? yea but you going to need a shit ton of emps to remove that much shield lol
Ok after alot of balance whine from terrans about the OP archon Blizzards comes out with the Radioactive Ghost! Drop a nuclear missile on top of a ghost to give him super powers

You can't expect the same level of play from the first Season of WCS EU/NA as from WCS KR.
It's the first season and there were so many invites from results from last year. In Korea the whole league is as good as it gets because everyone qualified for it and if there are players in bad form, they drop out and a better player comes in.
That process has yet to happen in EU/NA.

wow what a bad engagement from the protoss...LOL
|
Its like both are trying to outchoke the other ....

Titan really likes to engage in fights he has little chance of winning when he doesn't need to.

OH GOD TITAN WHY
god damn it
|
Well, Titan got reverse-Protossed

Wrong move to warp those zealots in Thorzain's main unfortunately

aight gonna have at least one terran advancing
|
Oh wow. Thorzain's engagements are just out of this world.

Titan will be facepalming later on when he realizes he threw the game :o

That is what you call a throw. So far the biggest one in this tourney.

this was almost worse than watching Kas when he refuses to micro his army against banelings

titan makes a nice easy throw, thorzain catches with one hand behind his back

EMP's really saved Thorizain there

Titan why warp in 10 zealots in thorzain main that do nothing when you cant defend the Push

Titan looked so good in both of the games until those really critical errors. What a shame.

I stopped watching after the HT-Zealot harass, how did Thorzain manage to win this game?

He was supposed to not fight in a tiny chokepoint when he'd just warped in 20 zealots and sent them somewhere other than the fight.

Thorzain knows something about engaging a Protoss army with ghosts (it's basically what he does; 10 min push and then camp to ghosts).
|
On May 01 2013 02:53 crms wrote: I'm newb, what was titan supposed to do vs so much EMP? His army was sick and then just instantly died... for starters, not attack in a place where his army is incredibly clumped up and he has no surface area for his zealots to engage

It's a spellcaster war, so if his templar can get storms before the EMPs hit, it'll still be ok for him. There were too many ghosts to feedback though, but that's also an option if the ghost:templar ratio is closer together.

On May 01 2013 02:53 crms wrote: I'm newb, what was titan supposed to do vs so much EMP? His army was sick and then just instantly died... Back off, spread army. Also he engaged into concave of terran units, Thorzain had better surface area.

his army was sick?
He had like 2 templars vs around 8-9 ghosts and engaged in an unfavorable position. Not to mention he only had 3 colossus.
And he was up a base... he had no reason to engage Thorzain.
He could easily have won if he had a lot more templars/colossus in the mix. Even if he did not win the battle would go more in his favor and he would have been able to remax easily since he is ahead in eco

I am constantly asking my self that against the splash dmg that protoss has. in just comes down to the better army control. if you lose all your energy on the HTs and most of the shields are down due to emps you are dead, if the terran does not micro the best out of his bio units he will just eats tons of damage due to the storms.

I learned something there.. placing rax before engaging is pretty smart it gave him an edge in that fight.

You forgot he also had Zealots in Thorzain's mineral lines and production. There were so many reasons to just hang out and not fight it's amazing he decided to attack there.

Thorzain is essentially undefeatable in late game TvP. Little things like the double barracks walloff on the ramp up to the natural, burning 300m to delay a zealot push into his nat by a good 30s. Brilliant stuff that no one comments on because it's not micro, just strategic.
Protoss players have nightmares about engaging a ghost heavy Thorzain in lategame TvP. I'm not surprised people try and force early engagements.

Titan was quite far ahead before the attack; something which he should have not done. He had his 4th coming up and could start banking minerals and getting more gates. He got too eager and attacked...

Yeah, this was not standard Thorzain at all. Titan I know took time off and was barely playing when HoTS came out (not sure how he ended up invited to Code S), but Thorzain's been practicing in Korea and should theoretically be improving not regressing.

yeah true, the barrack walling/choking is a fantastic response against titan's style in both the last games, I also highly recommend it if you're scared about ultras and such ^^ On the other hand, as in every TvP ever on daybreak, he was starting to fall behind to non-stop harass, happily titan was generous and donated his army
TZ played it very proper

Protoss players have nightmares about engaging a ghost heavy Thorzain in lategame TvP. I'm not surprised people try and force early engagements. Titan just threw this game, I don't think Thorzain is that untouchable in lategame TvP (at least not judging from these games).

He took out Creator pretty handily but bear in mind, Thorzain is the kind of player who appears with specific timings and then practices those timings to excess OR he relies on his lategame control. When he has a timing down he's usually hitting it 10-15s earlier than anyone else.
HoTS hasn't been remotely figured out yet. Give him a few months.

You can find a random ladder person with 1500 games, it still won't give him nerves of steel playing Thorzain with a WCS spot on the line.
Many people are saying "i haven't heard too much about him" which obviously translates into "he doesn't have that much high-play experience", which of course makes it natural for him to be nervous.

No, Titan had the right idea (harass his natural/poke the third). Instead, what happened was Thorzain built two rax on his natural which delayed the natural attack by a good 30s or so. Which basically means that his army had to stay a LOT longer and do a lot more damage than he was comfortable doing,
It wasn't about attacking into a choke. Most Protoss will tell you that a Terran in a choke is a fantastic engagement - storm and win.

any tvp player, regardless of race, will tell you that defending a position is much easier than attacking one once templar/ghosts are in play
he clearly shouldn't have committed to an attack there, he probably knows it as well

Russian WCS Champion who placed 13th-16th in the European finals. It's a good invite but I'm not sure of how much he has played lately. I guess not enough. :/ He played 750 ladder games this season on his main account alone, not counting customs and potential smurfs, normally that should be more than enough for a player of his potential, I don't know why he's not getting the hang of it yet, his decision making this series was simply abysmal. Hopefully soon.
Perhaps his PvZ will show to be better. He and Livezerg practiced a lot together in MoW and probably does so nowadays too.

Titan used to play a ton though in the heyday of WoL. He was capable of beating Stephano when Stephano was at his peak. He may not have attended many premier tournaments (since rox.kis doesn't send their players out that much), but he did lots of online tournaments, which is what WCS EU is right now.
That being said, those decisions were so weird I don't see how it could be anything other than nerves.

They are mere mortals. This isn't a question of being top level but justifying the invites. If this carries on I might start thinking that all player slots should have gone to open qualifier. Of course all players lots should have gone to open qualifiers. I don't even see how that's questionable, they just needed to secure big names in order to promote it and the partners probably felt like they didn't have enough time to do the qualifiers correctly.
Rightfully so, since they partly managed to screw up even the smaller scale ones already.

I'd try to clarify my point, but that would just mean rewriting my initial post. I know who his, I played him more than I can count, and if someone hasn't heard of him, I definitely wouldn't 'fault' him for it, rofl.
Then again, you seem to think that Titan and TZ have played at the same level and have similar experience with the game, so I'm probably not managing my time very well to start with.

Strelok must have upped his game recently. He had a decent run at DreamHack, and now with this result... Reminds me of earlier WoL days

And the player stats/information was also community feedback. ESL does a good job to be honest, and this is only the first WCS EU :D
Edit - Also congratz to Strelok, totally deserved.

I still think Ret is favoured here, both didn't play well in their first series but I'd be a bit surprised if Titan manages to win here.

Ret is awesome ZvP right now, he dispatched pretty much every korean toss he played (First, MC, Sage), I think Grubby was the only toss to take a series from him in HotS so far?
At least it's gonna be a good game, don't think it will go 2-0 either way but I could see Ret 2-0 easier than Titan

Speaking of nostalgia, whenever I see Strelok I think of him winning the HD World Tournament that HDStarcraft organized 2 years ago.

What i also like about interviews is that a playername becomes more then just a name. It gives the player some character for the viewers
|
I'm so so glad Strelok proves wrong the people who were continuously underestimating him and making silly jokes. When he plays his best, he is one of the best European players for sure, and can take out some Koreans too.

Nice. Every time a player goes for some early aggression there is at least one guy calling him out for being the lesser player who doesn't dare to play "straight up". I find that to be a very boring and sad mindset.

In the Thorzain games and in this game Titan loves doing tons of harass and and then when he has a small army and no reinforcements (because he just warped chargelots in to harass) he likes to attack into his opponents much larger army instead of playing defensively.

It's funny, the former Brood War players are more known for cheesing (White-Ra, Dimaga) while the WC3 players play more standard. I think it's because they had to learn SC2 from scratch and decided to completely model their gameplay on what the community felt was the 'right way to play'. (these observations aren't really statistically significant, but I think there might be some truth to it, since I read an interview of a WC3 player where he said he based his game on what Day[9] said in his daily ^^)

I really don't know why it is. In Dota the Europeans are much more aggressive than the Asian teams, so it's not something in the culture.
It probably has something to do with Europeans being slower players than Koreans so very aggressive multitasking styles won't work as well where as sitting back and making a maxed deathball is easier if you're a slower player.
But there's definitely more to it than that because some Europeans are quite fast players but they generally still love to play no rush.
Perhaps it's because in Korea you know who your opponent will be in a tournament so prepared aggressive or cheesy builds are more likely to work because you can cater them to your opponent. In Europe there's basically almost only weekend LAN's or weekly cups which better suit bland, generic but safe builds you can use every game you play (ahem Kas/Happy/Ret) because you need builds which work against any opponent.

Zergs should stop going hatch first.

Wow Ret last in his group, I don't think many people expected this.

Over/under on thrown games in this next series?

Let's hope Titan has enough focus left not to derp against Thorzain again.

Last is the King of Throws. He was the first to get reverse swept in a Bo7 (OSL against Rain), then did it again against MC (OSL 3rd place match).

Exactly this. Not sure that the small difference between 15h or 15P16H is that great that you should take the risk.
Look at what happened to Jaedong vs Naniwa @ Dreamhack. Had he gone 15P he would have held that proxy gates.
Ho well! I am just a noob. lol

Wasn't expecting that at all in this group to be honest.

Top-3 foreign zerg once upon a time perhaps.

After seeing strelok qualify for wcs-eu i knew he would have a pretty good shot in wcs-eu. He plays pretty standard every game, but it works for him and thorzain doesnt have so much practise against EU-tvt mech. After strelok, i would have chosen thorzain for sure. So it seems my prediction may come true.

Lol there's a few koreans that would like a word with you.

I was hoping for Strelok and Ret to advance from this group initially. But I underestimated that they are paired up first, which means the guy who loses may go on tilt a little bit and have trouble to play the other two needed matches well enough.

why are you guys acting like it's unexpected that Ret of all people may not have been practicing much lately

I'm sure that was in a dream, or in a club house exclusively made for Plastic League players. Ret joined WoL relatively late and has been since then, over all, quite mediocre and actually quite bad near the end of WoL. He has had some really good moments, and seemed really on the way up as HotS was released. No one has ever said that Ret was a top Zerg, maybe in Eu at one point briefly. The only time this statement would be true is Ret's status as top foreign Zerg in BW. Otherwise it's super weird that you have been hearing that a fair amount...

Ret's performance goes up and down a lot, sort of similar to ThorZain in this group.

Ret bounces around lately in his playstrength, but alot of people do that currently.

People usually called Ret "the most talented foreigner" or "one of the most talented RTS player ever" whatever that is supposed to mean.

Ret won the European Battle.net Invitational in 2011 and at that time he did look like the best in Europe. Today he doesn't get in the ""Code S""-clone of Europe. So yeah, things have changed, I guess.

Yeah, think back to the time before Stephano exploded on the scene, and before BL Infestor dominated T and Ps. Tough to remember any other notable Zs. Machine... LZGamer...
Nerchio was there, but was considered an online player back in the day. Idra of course.
Zerg was considered the "mechanical race" so foreigners didn't flock to it. Interesting how things switched up and by the end of WOL Zerg was least mechanical one, and Terran was the most.

Zerg was never the least mechanical one. If you're talking the least demanding of APM, it was always protoss.

We're talking about Ret. The player who just got knocked out his group. The group to which this LR is dedicated.
There's just interesting analogy between mechanical difficulty and top foreigners. When Terran was all about rushes and two base timings, there were plenty of foreign Terrans. As macro play evolved and the skill cap increased, foreign Terrans started disappearing.
When Zerg was about macro games and harass (Speedling, Baneling, and Muta TvZ, FE), there weren't many good foreign Zergs. On the other hand, when Zerg's defense became so strong they could easily turtle to BL Infestor while deflecting any attack except an all in without Queens and Sunkens, Foreign Zergs exploded.
Pretty interesting.

don't get me wrong, i understand pretty much everything Kaelaris says (i study English and American Studies), but i can see how ToD might not.
lately it has been looking like we're finally getting close to that state where players know when they've lost a game, and actually leave it. i remember when i switched from war3 over to sc2, i was really confused to see even pros not leaving the game when it was so obvious they had already lost. that was very much the opposite of the late years of war3 where you could see a player lose his hero in the middle of the map and immediately gg out because they knew there was no way to come back.
kinda cool to see players leave at a more sensible timing now. let's not talk about Idra, guys.

All this is because Protoss and Zerg races are designed to be very good with their Tier 3 units in Late game.Terrans got the best units for mid game. Its not the skill. The maps also changed a lot.No more close positions,no more really small maps.
Think about Whirlwind: Huge map.Think about the Zerg and Protoss mechanichs compared to Terrans. Instant warps or Zeerg capable of building 15 ultralisks or almos 100 lings at time. You cant compare this to queing units from barracks and rally them.Even transporting them in Speedmedivacs.Everybody know this.Huge maps are not Terran friendly. They are MACRO friendly, but its not the best the Terran race got.Drops or runbies with stim is the best they do and kiting as hell or splitting units. All of this requieres skill and multitasking.Zerg and Protoss just amove and warp or make units and spawn larvae. No need to micro almost. Its not the same.
Think about maps like Atlatis Spaceship. Why do you think MVP went for 2rax vs Squirtle in this final map??
Pretty interesting.

You've never heard that. Or it was someone with no authority or intelligence whatsoever. "Best zerg in the whole world?" Are you fucking serious?
People used to MAYBE mention him as top 3 foreigner zerg in early, early WoL. If you haven't tuned in to an event since 2011, I'll let it slide.

Thought that Thorzain and Ret would have a better showing. It's the 30th of april lol I'm surprised Ret even showed up. Hell I haven't slept for 36 hours haha XD Haha, what are you orange guys up to down there? Well it's queens day which is special enough, but it's the final queens day as from now on Queen Beatrix stepped down. But really it was just an excuse to party hard starting from yesterday. Every excuse to party hard is good!

Well, tomorrow maybe better, socke specially a socke vs mvp.

Ret coming last and dropping to challenger is pretty funny considering how after IEM a lot of people were saying HotS was his game, this was going to be his time to shine etc.

Very happy to see Thorzain advance.

Soooo happy for Strelok! It's been a long time since he has shown some results. I'm always glad to see foreigners of the BW generation rising up!
|
Really happy for thorzain and strelok! These guys finally get what they deserved for so long !
|
Very happy with these results! Great to see Strelok Own up the group and also happy to see ret demolished.
|
I didn't think Thorzain would make it out, but glad he did!

Why all this stuff about Terran? what have Terran even won in the last few months? Last I checked, Zerg is on fire again. And pro league fields almost all Protoss, because at the highest level of play that's what is working best.

Fenix making some really bad move out decisions...

ret/strelok game 1, last game ending battle: "great engagement by strelok" (kaelaris). really? i think he did nothing but watching how his tanks rape a high tech zerg army with ultras/vipers. maybe ret should have save some energy for the pull thing.
