The StarCraft II eSports scene is as vibrant as ever thanks to the recent release of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and the launch of the revised World Championship Series. 2013 has been a big year for StarCraft–which just celebrated its 15th anniversary–and it’s about to get even better. We’re happy to announce the comeback of ASUS ROG to the StarCraft II arena this summer, as it returns to Helsinki with the ASUS ROG Summer 2013 StarCraft II Tournament!
The event will take place August 1-3 at ASSEMBLY, with a concept similar to last year’s ASUS ROG Summer 2012. The finals will be played on the main stage where the very first ASUS ROG Champion, DIMAGA, was crowned. A free HD stream with professional commentary will also be provided.

Tournament format
The tournament format is the same as last year in ASUS ROG Summer 2012: two dual tournament group stages and single elimination playoffs. The first group stage (Ro32) is played on the first day, the second group stage (Ro16) takes place on the second day and the playoffs (Ro8 onwards) are played on the third and final day of the event. All matches are best-of-five including the final. The 3rd place match is not played.
The ASUS ROG Summer 2012 tournament was among of the first outside of Korea to adopt the dual tournament format which had been made familiar to the StarCraft II audience by the GOMTV Global StarCraft II League. The feedback from the players about the new format was purely positive and especially the best-of-5 groups were praised being more fair than the more common best-of-3 format. Thus, it is no wonder that we are seeing this format again at ASUS ROG Summer 2013.
Participation
There are two ways to gain one of the 32 spots in the tournament, by a direct invite or by an online qualification tournament. In order to receive an invite, players must first request an invite by filling out an application form. Details about the online qualifications will be released later. However, everyone is encouraged to request an invite first, and participate in the qualifiers second if need be.

ASUS ROG releases the rules, map pool and the groups which start off the ASUS ROG Summer 2013 StarCraft II tournament in Helsinki August 1-3.
It is less than a week until the first matches of ASUS ROG Summer 2013 go live. The players have now been placed in the groups for the first group stage which will be played on the first day of the tournament, Thursday 1st August 13:00--22:30 CEST. The 32 players are divided into groups of four, which will be played in dual tournament format with best-of-5 matches. The top two players of each group advance to the second group stage, which is played in a similar fashion on Friday 2nd August.
However, despite the proximity of the event, we were able to get noteworthy replacements: Dignitas.TargA, NaVi.BabyKnight, prOperty.RunA, Fnatic.Naama and Bischu will take the vacant spots. We are very grateful to these players and teams who heeded our call and made the arrangements in a short time so that the tournament could retain its high standards.
Group Stage 1 The first round is player 1 vs player 2, and player 3 vs player 4.

It is now time to reveal the last eight invites and thus all the competitors that we are going to see at ASUS ROG Summer 2013 in two weeks time. The list is truly impressive despite the tournament field being really busy at the moment. The event is no doubt going to be a blast.
Unfortunately Empire.Kas, who earned a spot through the 2nd online qualifier, and one of the invitees, mouz.MaNa, have cancelled their participation to the event. coL.viPro will replace Kas as the second in line from the qualifier, and Alliance.SortOf, who placed top eight in the last ASUS ROG, will fill the last remaining spot.
There you have it. More updates will be announced next week. The first group stage will be announced one week before the event along with the map pool and the full set of rules. Stay on top of the latest news by following @ROGtournament on Twitter and visiting asusrogtournament.com.

With the qualifiers now over we are looking forward to the main event starting off on August 1st.
Qualifier results The two online qualifiers were played this week, 4-5 July, and we now have the total of eight qualified players to add to the lineup. More than 170 people tried to qualify to ASUS ROG Summer 2013 which surpassed our expectations. The top four finishers in both tournaments were determined with all best-of-3 matches and the final rounds played in double elimination format. More details can be found at the qualifier topic.
Update to broadcast crew As we have already announced, the main event will feature a free HD stream with Thomas “Khaldor” Kilian and Greg “IdrA” Fields providing the commentary. In addition, we are now happy to announce that Auguste “Semmler” Massonnat and Alexandre “FunKaDeLiC” Verrier will be joining the show as a host & interviewer and an in-game observer respectively. With three days of action and 32 skilled players around, we hope to get the most out of the atmosphere in the venue.

Glad this is coming back. but really disappointed that Idra is included in this. In my opinion, his current and previous BM record is deserving of him being practically ignored in the industry. I will specifically not tune in to watch any games he is casting.

ASUS ROG fighting!
I'm sure they'd have mentioned that if it was the case.
Hmmm who's running the production than? They didnt mention anyone. Are they even equipped to do it themselves?
ASUS ROG Summer 11 (TB / apollo, won by Dimaga over Mana) and Winter 12 (MrBitter / Khaldor / Apollo and Kaelaris won by Polt over Stephano) was without GDstudio afaik. Also Assembly ("event" it's held at) has production capabilites and SETT has tournament experience too.
I hope DeMusliM is there. Actually, I hope DeMusliM wins. It would be most amusing to hear Idra have to commentate the player he calls a shit player on his stream every time they play on ladder (regardless of who wins).
So Asus ROG tourney is back? With respect to event atmosphere on stream, this is the closest you get to Dreamhack when Dreamhack just isn't around for the time being What I would give to have TB cast this again. Yes, TB, out of all.

Real life is not a schoolyard, you don't go to detention because you were mean to the other kids.
Is famous. Like Kim Kardashian.
Is not talented caster in my opinion, just lists things that happen in a game "three zerglings get past 2 die" that everybody sees anyway and huge bias towards P being op and just says things like "now protoss will a-move and win" (did attack and lose the game). I don't know maybe he will improve, let's hope so at least. I'm sure everyone who is a idra fan thinks he is great caster and maybe there is enough of those people that make him a good choice for this event.
im far from a Idra fan but i´ve seen him cast during the EG cup and he´s not too shabby tbh, so this might actually work. Now i just wait for a siiiiick line-up
Well, Khaldor as the main caster of a tournament is always great, the tournament gets so mutch better with him. But i cant imgaine him with Idra 3 days long...like, Khaldor is always friendly and funny, while IdrA...
Khaldor and Idra combo seems very interesting. it could turn out to be amazing, but it also could turn out to be horrible. ah well, the games should be great either way though.
WTF Khaldor the big sexy German, and the Gracken...WOW this could be epic combo haha, so unlikely though.
BIG PROPS to you ASUS ROG though, finally a LAN to look forward too that isn't stupid WCS thanks! Cannot wait, and im sure the E-Sports world will shower you with viewers
Great news, the old Asus ROG tournaments were partially the reason why I picked a ROG notebook over the competition Always enjoyed the show they've put on!
I haven't been a huge Idra fan, particularly after the TL meltdown but I must say his casting at Shoutcraft NA impressed me. He is fully capable of removing his bias and when he does, he's a great caster in my opinion.
In response to the ~10 people who won't be watching due to Idra, I'd recommend getting over the past because you'll be seeing much more of him in future tournaments.
Headline: Asus steps up the plate seeking to reap the benefits of increased HoTs viewership, while MLG sulks in a corner debating how they can nickle and dime a game they obviously don't give a shit about.

Hang on. Are we still talking about Idra? The guy who got fired from his well-paid professional job because he was, essentially, "mean to the other kids"?
When that went down I said I would support him if he could turn his perception around. Suffice it to say, he hasn't. He still calls everyone bad and treats people badly, particularly if that person is DeMusliM, his former teammate. He's still toxic.
Perhaps this is the tournament where he turns it around, but it remains to be seen. I'll definitely tune in and give it a go, mostly because I like good SC2 (and Khaldor).
Awesome! Glad to see ASUS ROG's here, and IdrA too! I hope Khaldor and IdrA do well together, though I won't deny that I have a feeling that their chemistry won't be the best.

I decided to give his cast a chance with shoutcraft America (I was never particularly a fan of his personality and thought his release was a long time coming) and actually found him to be surprisingly professional. If the play is bad, he says so which is so refreshing (anoys the hell out of me when Axletoss hypes up a piss poor performance) but he does it in a way which is professional and non-vulgar. Completely and utterly different to his personality when actually playing the game, I'd say give his casting a chance.

He's always been quite professional (though a bit dry and sardonical at times) when it comes to casting. The rest he keeps under wraps for his own stream.
idras casting is excellent and he doesnt let his personal feelings get in the way too muhc, although when he does it sounds more tounge in cheek, its good and imo the best analytical caster out there cos hes actually won stuff AND maintains GM himself
I would also like more info on this. Surely it at least qualifies as tier 2?
It depends on two things: Whether Blizzard deems the qualification system open enough and the caliber of the players in the final lineup. So this can't be determined yet.
hmmmm! Khaldor + Idra just might be incredibly awesome. Bit nervous to see how they do, but I think their personalities could compliment each others casting. Idra is always great for analysis, and Khaldor is fun because he brings the hype during intense moments. Loved this tourny last year. Regardless of whose invited, I'm looking forward to it.

Funny how you come to the defense of Idra after that rough exchange of messages between you two a long time ago. Times have changed.
Or defending a tournament he has been a part of in the past?
Also this is the second highest prize pool at an Assembly event (last summer's ROG was $30k, only 5k higher, the previous two ROGs were $20k and e15k).
niiice!!! also IDRA AS A CASTER!!!!! the timing is perfect its my last weekend before I move out of my apartment so I'll be able to watch the whole thing :D
With the upcoming $25k MLG open tournament being a "WCS Tier 1" event I wouldn't be too surprised to see the same here. That would add to some excitement :D
Happy to see this event back again, good memories from ASUS ROG.. as a downfall there would have been actually good casters to pick from? how about: Apollo, Total biscuit, Day9, Take, Artosis etc.. ..u pick khaldor?

Oh stop being such a big baby. IdrA is a solid caster, and he's great for this community.
I swear, the amount of prissiness about BM in the Starcraft community is just insane.

solid first post bro. Khaldor is an established and, at the very least, good caster. not every caster is always going to be available for every event for a price both sides can agree to, and tournaments will not not hire a caster because YOU don't like him.

He's also been a caster at Assembly before. It's very possible that ESL's casters were simply unavailable (Kaelaris has expressed interest in returning north for such events). My only concern remains that both casters have often expressed very strong racial bias.

ASUS ROG Summer 2013 is not going to be a WCS partner event and therefore no WCS points will be granted. This is the current status, and it's unlikely to change.

Agreed, the invite is a little different. I think this is just one of the reasons I like seeing him cast. He's won several major events. I think it gives him a unique perspective most casters don't have.
