blanket comments like this are hilariously misguided. it's a live event - worst comes to worst think of it as a night out, what does a movie ticket cost nowadays? sure the organisers could (likely) work a better deal with the venue, especially if they knew attendees would create turnover, and effectively not rely on players to bail them out hence the comically low return, but it's not uncommon in other sports. heck, take the british chess championships for example - that's £200 to enter, and the best a non-grandmaster can hope to do is win a most improved rating prize of, wait for it, £250!
i don't know what level you play, but if someone organised an online event exclusively for your division that cost $5 to play, returned 80% of that as well-distributed prize money while retaining 20% as token expenses for admins, casters etc, you wouldn't enter? what if a sponsor added $100 to the prize pool? $250?
Everyone has to understand that some of the money will go to the winner. Some donations will also go to things to get this group going. Trips, LAN equipment, BBQ's, amd a website. Without some of this stuff this group can't grow and get bigger. I live in Philly and am so glad this is a new thing in this city.
