The XII Season of the Intel Extreme Masters had its first stop with StarCraft II announced, in just a few weeks we will be going back to Shanghai, to play for 7,500 WCS Points and USD 25,000.00. But, before that, we will have to find out the 12 players to join the 4 already invited.
Neeb and other non-Koreans might make it to stage 2 since the Korean scene has been thinned out a lot (16 spots are open and there are not significantly more than 16 top players) and 4 of the top players are already qualified for the main tournament. But I don't like their odds for stage 2 very much..
On June 22 2017 07:18 DieuCure wrote: So JYP would win against 3 players, scarlett 4, Jim 2, pet 1 ? Be serious
I'm just naming random players that are weaker than Neeb and will be in the qualifer likely. I'm saying Neeb could potentially beat Zest, Pet, JYP etc and qualify
If we assume that the brackets work as intended (not a safe assumption in practice but for argument's sake) the best 10 players in Korea (excluding 4 seeds) will make it through. The question then, is whether Neeb is one of them, and I'm inclined to say no.
Off the top of my head, I would put at least these 14 (in no particular order) above Neeb: Classic herO Stats (invited) TY (invited) INnoVation (invited) ByuN Maru aLive Gumiho soO (invited) Dark ByuL Solar Rogue
14 instead of 16 because Neeb is not eligible for either of the 2 Chinese spots afaik.
OK, so according to sOs and Maru's stream schedule, they will stream on 26th, 27th, 28th and 30th at 4 pm Chinese time which is exactly same as IEM global qualifiers. We will see which one they pick. Or maybe they know top 16 WCS players will be invited, so they won't stream on 29th to play closed qualifier.
Very excited for these. Honestly some of the best days of StarCraft I ever had were IEM Korean qualifiers. So stacked, so many good games. Usually far stronger than the main event.
With Neeb, Scarlett, and Major all not participating, I think it's possible that some of them were given an invite into the second stage of qualifying.
16 invites to 2nd stage & 4 already in the main event (plus 2 talented Chinese players through China qualifiers) substantially weakens the open qualifiers.
On June 27 2017 18:31 Soke wrote: Hmm. I would have thought that Major and Scarlett would try for the qualifier. If they weren't invited, and aren't playing now, I guess not?
They're probably getting invited to stage 2 later this week. I can't really imagine them not trying otherwise. They'd make the bracket quite a bit harder.
On June 27 2017 20:53 Nerchio wrote: Snute with lag > Hurricane? xd
Why aren't you there? Do you have a ticket straight to the closed qualifiers?
I'd assume so, since 16 players are invited through WCS standings
Elazer is 7th, but he still participated. Even if some foreigners do get straight tickets to the closed qualifiers I guess its not 8 foreigners and 8 Koreans.
Scarlett didn't participate either, I don't think she has a straight ticket to the closed qualifiers, so not participating there can be for many reasons.
Invites for Stage 2 announced players are. Classic/herO/Neeb/sOs/Trap aLive/ByuN/GuMiho/Kelazhur/Maru/Ryung ByuL/Dark/Nerchio/Serral/Solar Note: Trap replaces MajOr who forfeited his spot. Also Note: Scarlett/TRUE are not invited.

OK then, almost all "top-tier" players have been either invited or qualified today, Zest need to join them or join military.

Actually in this particular game it was more of a horrendous choice by losira... billowy already had 2 robo and his mutas didn't do what he needed so it was quite a blunder. 700/700 for a few probes while teching into something that is bad vs what your opponent is already doing is
Scouting, 2 robo, or great tech timings are all of the incredibly important options for fighting vs lurkers. If you can't really identify it usually the game ends quite quickly with a P loss.
I will say however, the chargelot buff is quite a strong helper now as it allows you to do the multi tech without as much spreading of gas investment.
I'd like to see more Z's try lurkers on some of the odd maps, might be tougher for the toss to handle on those maps; though it is equally true that may impact the timing itself.

forfeited the gauntlet and now this? Special back in Major form
Major most likely is participating in Copa America in a couple of days for WCS points and $$. I would think he went to Mexico to have less lag and this would explain his absence. Not sure though.
Regarding the comment that Trap took the place of Major, I think its not the case. I think Kelazhur is the one who took Major's spot. I expected 12 Koreans and 4 foreigners to be invited, just like it was with Kespa cup a year ago. And the invites according to the ranking in each system (with the top 4 in KR already there, 5-16th place in the KR WCS, and the top 4 foreigners). Major isn't there, and Kelazhur next in turn (Kelazhur is 5th by WCS points) explains it. If the comment was true then it was 11 koreans and 5 foreigners, which makes less sense.

It was top 16 in WCS points overall, minus the top 4 from Korea, who were already invited.

Indeed that is what they did. Kelazhur was invited already a week ago or so (so he is not the replacement). They invited 5 players from West and 11 from Korea. Not sure how they calculated the points for the players from the West vs Korea as nothing makes clear sense.

Looks to me like they just took the 16 players with the most WCS points (excluding Stats, soO, Inno and TY, and also Major since he declined) by numerical value, no differentiation between WCS Circuit and WCS KR.

Of the seven other players, I think Neeb has a decent chance or is even favoured against 4-6 of them. I think Byun is favoured against Neeb. Rogue and Byul are bigger threats, but Neeb performed decently against Solar, so I think he should stand a decent chance if he were to face them. I just hope he gets far enough so that when he is knocked down to the lower bracket, he is mostly qualified.

I don't know to be honest. it's really silly. It works as a soft region lock. KR-EU suffers from a lack of a good server to play on (NA central = quite a lot better for EU, NA west = quite a lot better for KR). As much as WCS promotes cross-region play, there's a long way to go in terms of online matches. Zerg is heavily affected vs Terran, especially reapers. Then ZvZ is somewhat easier, and ZvP might be the match-up least affected by latency. So it's a soft region and race lock, very awkward for competition.

So nothing unexpected.
Rogue is a ZvP sniper in korea Elazer is top 5 foreigner, he just never got to show ZvP dominance at Dreamhack. Penguin is not very good
well Penguin is still in it after beating Trap and Kelazhur, so I don't think he's that weak
Trap is very on and off this year due to inconsistent practice (he was practicing to become an overwatch pro), and kelazaur Korean performance is shaky (also is he cross server?).
Honestly if I had to predict Neebs results it would have been 2-0 penguin, 0-2 rogue, 2-1 elazer, and 1-2 jjakji. I don't know why it's surprising

Rogue has always known when and where to proxyhatch Classic.
Wait, was it not Rain? I thought it was Rain
He 6-pooled Rain out of Code S the season after Rain won GSL
You can't compare performances in circuit/korea easily like that. The metas and overall levels of play are too different.
I was referring to him winning vs Penguin, losing vs Rogue and losing the first map against Elazer
So nothing unexpected.
Rogue is a ZvP sniper in korea Elazer is top 5 foreigner, he just never got to show ZvP dominance at Dreamhack. Penguin is not very good
Not only Rogue is a ZvP sniper. He was also always great in ZvZ. But the weakness was ZvT. But now, what he has shown against ByuN, I can't wait for his GSL group.
let's not start the hype train too soon. But I agree Rogue hasn't looked as good for ages.

I think he was dead well before the doom drop. You need to prepare a transition to deal with ranged libs far earlier than that. He seemed to be confident he'd be able to break Maru with colo + gate but it wasn't enough at all.

This is actually quite true. On aligulac you see toss lagging 15% for second period in a row - last time that happened was in what, 2011? On ladder everytime I check top of divisions in master I see 60% z, 35% t and one or two tosses. But hey, toss op x-)

He will either lose to foreigners which will be a disappointment, or he will use some complete bullshit to knock out better players and get deep in the tournament.
Plus he only has WCS points because he won GSLST off adepts being broken. Seems undeserved if he goes to blizzcon. Then again every time herO wins it looks undeserved, he really is the king of PvT bullshit

But yeah, it'll be sad to have just Stats, herO and Trust in IEM, especially since - correct me if I'm mistaken - I believe Stats is a lot below the peak form he had when he won GSL.

It's not about balance if TIME is dominating KR scene
If TY and INnoVation are top 4
If Neeb was in loser bracket with PenguiN and that he had won, that would have been a perfect 4-3-3.
But the bracket wasnt protoss friendly. It's not about balance, seriously, ponder.
? I am not talking about balance, I don't understand your post. You spoke about carriers vs carriers, so PvP, but what I am saying is that even tho it's good not to have too many PvP (or any mirror, but I'm relatively ok with TvT being a terran myself and finding that the most entertaining mirror), if it allows for more interesting match-ups in the real tournament, it's ok.

Stats has indeed fallen far. He's still very good of course but no longer the best player in the world, and even best Protoss is arguable. herO and Classic have both been doing pretty well recently, though.
Trust seems to be having something of a surge, though I very much doubt it will be enough for him to beat the top-tiers.
