The real question is how Scarlett will somehow manage to lose despite having a game-winning lead. We've seen moving into nukes, we've seen moving into mines, what will it be this time?

KeeN 2-0'd her and he was probably the worst TvZ player in Code S that season, that's really far off from convincing.
Those key mistakes make all the difference between Ro16 and Ro32, if she can't focus and stop herself from making those, well, she'll probably get stuck in Ro32 for a while longer.

In a lot of cases, the difference between ro16 and ro32 isn't stupid throws, it's a difference in speed/macro/general skill. Billowy, Creator, Keen etc are examples of those standard ro32 players. Scarlett had series where she legitimately played well Inno and aLive but fell short with some stupid throws. That's why I say she's capable of ro16

Well, she played three macro games against aLive in Season 1, and gave a pretty good showing, but made some key mistakes (attacking without her BLs) which cost her the series. In Season 2 she lost the first game straight-up but was in a good position until The Nuke™ happened in the second. In Season 3, Inno was playing super sloppy and far from his best–he threw away three full medivacs in the first game, didn't scout at all and had the wrong comp in the second, etc.
So I'd rate Scarlett's ZvT as good but not great; she's nowhere close to Rogue or Dark, but if she can avoid making key mistakes like she did in all three seasons last year (hardly a given) then she can make it to the Ro16. But I agree with Elentos–those key mistakes are exactly what distinguishes a Ro32 player from a Ro16 one. And thus far, Scarlett hasn't shown that she's worthy of the Ro16.

In a lot of cases, but not Scarlett's. And I would argue that making stupid throws is a worse problem to have than insufficient speed or macro, because those things have pretty obvious fixes–just practice more. Stupid throws on the other hand are a nebulous judgement/mental issue, and not so easily solved.

I disagree, stupid/random throws are something that don't happen every game. With enough attempts you'll get lucky and not make them for a series or two. The mistakes she made were random/isolated, she doesn't make them every series.
Having lesser skill in general is not something you can get past with more attempts, you actually have to improve (hence why some players never get past ro32)
edit: my point is just that, while Inno was playing below his normal level, almost beating the literal champ should indicate someone is capable of reaching the ro16 at least. I'd apply the same logic to her beating aLive in S1 as well. With every other player that never makes ro16, it's down to general skill being lower. With Scarlett she keeps being about to win, and then throwing it

I think Scarlett has a chance to make it out, but randomly doing poor against Protoss as well as some unconvincing series against Special does not give me a whole ton of hope.

I'd rate it as bad. She's 1-9 in maps against SpeCial over the last 3 series they've met and had some games that looked like viOLet against ByuN. She needs a lot more than beating Semper to wash off that stink.

To be fair, Major is the stronger of the two. But she's at 48% in ZvT since 2017-12-01.
Spanked by Rogue and soO and split with RagnaroK. His TvZ only looks good if you put any stock into beating Scarlett and JonSnow which I don't.
That being said, aLive has been pushed around recently by Impact, but Impact has been beating a number of good Korean Terran (GuMiho, Maru x2, jjakji) other than him, so his TvZ form is somewhat up in the air.

There is nothing to be ashamed about losing to Impact right now, but when your only results are losses, even to a good player, it is hard to really say much about a player's form. We know aLive's TvZ is worse than a super hot Zerg's ZvT. Ok, but how does he stand against a player who loses the expensive half of her army to a nuke?

I didn't realize her recent ZvT was so bad.
So she is 12-13, but two of those series were PvT, which she went 2-4 in, which leaves her at 10-9, which means all of her ZvT losses have been against major

They don't matter all that much. You have to engage around them, but their value is mainly positional not tactical so people don't mind. You don't get cool fights among the pathing blockers unfortunately.

yeah i guess I didnt mean as much bugged as their optimal pathing makes them walk to the side that is closer to the enemy pathing instead of the other way. like when you unintentionally split your army moving across a part of the map that has a ramp with high and low ground split
Yeah, Scarlett shouldn't have gone for such a low drone count cos she wasn't able to do that much with her army. Her bank lead just dissipated as the game went on.

I think you can stay on that count longer on Neon Violet. You can engage on your own term as zerg on this map. It's definitely tricky, but not unnavigably so.

True, but I understand her logic, especially once mass ghost is out.
This game is super frustrating to watch for tons of reasons
man I loved the low drone count to be able to take that maxed out engage, but the fact that she didnt rebuild drones while she had a bank was such a throw.
How is Zerg supposed to win the late game when all of their effective late game units are countered by Ghosts? Fungal should drain energy, because right now Zerg has no way to counter spell casters, like Toss has with Feedback and Terran with EMP.

It looks like he took a while to notice how far ahead he was. He didn't realize that he'd killed 2/3 of Scarlett's economy during the push up top, and was probably a bit shaken by the loss of his production.

Army had nothing to do with that game, eco won aLive the game. Scarlett cut drones to 36 to get a bigger army, and when the dust settled she had literally 9 drones to aLive's 37.

Such a frustrating game. Ghosts, Vikings and Liberators slowly destroying everything after you annihilated your opponent. People could talk for days about all the frustrating things in that game.

When mass ghosts trade ultra-efficiently against basically any late game zerg army, it seems pretty relevant to me

A bit of overextension too I think. Pulling back after crushing aLive's army would've been really counterintuitive, but would also have won her the game, since the ghosts wouldn't have able to reap all that value in the follow-through.

Terran was absolutely favored after they nerfed Parasitic Bomb to 60 energy. Terran could just mass Liberators and a-move to win vs Zerg mass air.

Fungal makes Ghosts useless
EMP makes Fungal non-existent more instantly
Doesn't fungal have more range than emp? Given perfect control Zerg should get fungals off first and then ghosts can't get in range to EMP anymore.

I was just thinking this. She killed a ton of aLive's army and just went into the main when she should have just gone back, regrouped, and made a death push. Also, cutting all of those drones so early in hindsight was not the greatest idea.

Might've been intentional when I think of it. Even before the big fight aLive had very few medivacs favouring liberators heavily, so while medivacs could have been good afterwards he didn't re-evalute his composition.
That game was very interesting from a theoretical standpoint.

No, both Fungal and EMP have 10 range
Fungal has slightly more range due to the radius, but EMP's faster so it isn't totally symmetric.
I think I agree that the "correct play" for her was the counter-intuitive one...
aLive could have definitely pushed out with Ghosts earlier, made Hellions, Banshees or Liberators after the engagement and been fine, all I can think of Z doing is turtle more and make more Drones and offensive Spores/Spines but then you have to make the sacrifice for army count. In the past it was usually fine to do that with how quickly you could re-max, but in that game I don't there's a way to do that unless your opponent just does nothing. Idk. I need to watch it again but it's so exhausting.

EMP has range too. And if you try to use the fungal range youre going to hit like 3 ghosts which is worthless

Same range, 10 on both
But radius is 1.5 for EMP and 2.25 for EMP so the effective range is slightly higher for fungal.
And I just love how even after everything in the last game, it turns out Banshees are just fine to use instead of Liberators and Stim Marines are still ridiculously good, and the balance team thinks giving T Auto-Turrets back is fine...

I don't understand why she would go for Roaches when they haven't been in the meta for a year, but it's what I expect from her now, to fall apart when she's under any sort of pressure. It's a shame for a player who was so good at playing from behind in the past to become so throwy when she actually does have an advantage and fall apart when she doesn't.
I think she went for ravagers because she was behind and was hoping for some lucky biles to come back.
So basically her strategy this season is to try old compositions to catch her opponents off-guard. Nice move but aLive was like "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". Nicely done, aLive.
On January 13 2018 14:36 Ej_ wrote: Why do people mention fungal vs emp when ghosts die to BLs?
Because BLs are the slowest unit in the game despite how heavily Z has to rely on them being alive and moving across massive maps and they can't detect on their own and they die to Ghosts, Mines, and Vikings if not babysat and positioned carefully. If there was a better way to neutralize Ghosts, Z would have an easier time in that late-late game situation dealing with them and making a safe zone to utilize their BLs. Very quickly written, but there's a lot more to it than just "Ghosts die to BLs".
Zerg isn't used to being able to lose games once they have established their hive tech, hence all the complaints. Seriously the percentage of games terran wins vs late game Zerg is so low, complaining about it is ridicolous.

Impossible. GSL finals are after the hydra nerf, so Rogue will obviously be a washed-up scrub by that point

It's a 30min game of Neeb massing cannons and flying around with 200 supply of carrier/storm, spare your time.
Okay, now I'm not going to say I'm rooting for Mr. DoKyung now, but he should totally be a little defensive and play Stasis Control with a lot of Oracles until Carriers arr- or just get a small Stasis there and not do that and die nvm GG.

The storms didn't come because the templars were stuck behind the archons and immortals. Also, had he tried to storm, the templars would have been killed by splash before getting the storm off because they were stuck :D
In my headcanon Tastosis has a whole clone Caster Archon that they force to cast ZvZs so they can get coffee and Subway until the next series instead of watch.

Making it to the round of 16 is a different story though. And to take out the Blizzcon champion in pretty convincing fashion.
Wow, Scarlett played great in those last 2 games against Rogue. It's so nice to see a foreigner not just fall apart against early pressure from Korean pros.
