suiciding a lot is completely normal while practicing it. Honestly suiciding a lot is completely normal for practicing like 30% of melee tech lol
e: ok 30% probably an exaggeration but like 95% of tech that involves anything close to a ledge

At my first tournament my opponent asked for a hand warmer and i didn't get a single wavedash the entire time we were warming up. I felt like I couldn't even dash dance. Just first tournament jitters. Tech skill is almost never as good in tournament as it is on your own setup with your friends but it'll get closer the more you play in tournaments :D

I only got 4 stocked because of tournament jitters. Definitely just tournament jitters. Killed his nana the second game, clearly I was getting warmed up :p But seriously they're totally normal. Got them when I played my first SC2 tournament, first melee tournament, really first competitive anything.

(This all happened to me today though I guess I played ok; at least I made it out of pools, heh... plus we beat Myko/Tang in doubles!! and Tang is the best player in the world!!)

I get the feeling of tech skill suffering in a tournament setting but I normally chalk that up to me remembering my mistakes in tournaments a lot more than in casual play. No idea if that's accurate though. e: also congrats beating Tang is pretty cool :D

As for my own gameplay at the tournament, I am not pleased with how I performed. I have been focusing so much on run cancel down tilting that it sort of took over my gameplay and I noticed that it took away from my dash dance and my fairs so I guess I need to mix those back in. I feel like I'm so close to hitting the next level of skill but getting the correct balance of all of this is really difficult T.T

I took two stocks off him a while back, get ecstatic, then on game 2 it's as if his brain said "DOWNLOAD COMPLETE" and 4 stocked me easily. Funny as shit, cuz he was clearly not trying, but the pressure was TOO real. I do wish I coulda played him now since I feel like I'd learn much more. Also got fifth at an 18 man tourney yesterday, best I ever did! :D Not even one year of playing yet. I'm slowly getting adjusted to tournament settings. Not nervous/anxious as much, tech skill being a lot more consistent when it matters, and most importantly THE ABILITY TO ADAPT. Watching my opponent in both friendlies/tourneys have helped me so so much. By not playing like an auto pilot FalcoBot5000 has been awesome - to actively think and execute inputs in fast situations and mixing it up helped tons.

In one of my first tournaments I was nervous to the point of my hands sweating and shaking, which didn't end well as a beginner Fox trying to learn tech skill. After going to many more tournaments I'm still less clearheaded in tournament compared to friendlies, but it's far, far better now. Tournament sets are really fun to me now. Repeated experience helps a ton. Framing nervousness as excitement (PPMD mentioned this in his AMA) also seemed to improve my tournament mindset (i.e. I try to have fun while playing my best and focus less on evaluating myself based on what happens during the game).

8 Months left until I get to rejoin society and see if any amount of technical improvement will prevent me from getting stomped. I somewhat doubt it

And then it's the opposite for wavedashing. In practice, I get 80-90% of my wavedashes, but in game it's close to like 20-30%, ugh...
