In the end it's because there's only so many hours in the day and its better to get absurdly deep into one game than to dip your toes into everything. And you're never going to even approach the ceiling of Melee, so it's a safe bet.

People used to use this same argument when comparing SC2 to BW and I don't believe that it's true at all, and it irks me a bit. Even though BW and Melee are more mechanically demanding, they still require just as much if not more strategy/mind games/spacing than their sequels. Just because Smash 4 lacks the mechanical aspect of Melee does not necessarily mean that it requires more mindgames and reads. It's just that in Smash 4, mind games are happening at a pace in which a new player can follow them and understand at surface level what's going on without being too invested in the game. When I listen to Mango analyze one of his tournament sets on his YouTube channel, he explains each complex read and decision him and his opponent are making at breakneck speeds and it just blows my mind that he can play so fast and make so few mechanical errors which could easily cost him a stock while thinking about the game on a whole different level. Haha, thanks, I'm glad even one person read my huge post (I couldn't be happy with myself unless I got all of that out). Sorry lemme clarify myself, because I do actually agree with you. While I see how you interpreted my meaning in that way since I used the word "more" in "more focus", I am indeed not making a 1:1 comparison of the games in the aspect of reading, but I meant relatively within the scope of Smash 4. That is, I'm comparing the proportion of reading:mechanics in Smash 4 to the proportion reading:mechanics in Melee. I am aware of Mango's kind analysises (which are quite hilarious at that, such as the way he makes fun of M2K and talks as if it's sooo simple), and do agree that there is a good case to argue that if you compare the depth Melee's reading 1:1 to Smash 4's reading, that Melee's is actually more. But I mean that a Smash 4 player should focus more on non-mechanical aspects than mechanical ones, compared to a Melee player where at a certain point you really need to start getting your techs down, which I hope if I'm not mistaken is how you feel too? (Though as an aside, I am quite indifferent to this, as I feel much of it is due to the game speed just being very fast and not 100% because of difference in game mechanics, as well as me being satisfied enough with Smash 4's depth and would pick Smash 4 for its roster balance and character design. Not that it's not impressive or that I don't appreciate watching top melee play, but just my personal choice.) (For what I just said in this post, you can substitute the word reading with strategy, or basically anything asides from the physical aspects) Although I will take back what I said about "more careful movements", in which I was making a 1:1 comparison to my mistake. Smash 4's movements are obviously slower but you're right careful movement is also really huge in melee (probably bigger in both terms of relatively within each game as well as direct 1:1 comparison) and if you mess up slightly it could end in a stock loss ^^, where as in Smash 4 it would be more rare for a small movement to be very heavily punished.

I let my smash 4 thread die so I'll post this here. EVO is suggesting tournaments allow custom movesets in tournament play to see if they are viable for competitive play. I personally think it's a good idea to add variety to the line-up and to help some lower tier characters become viable. Thoughts?

Some big tournament needed to put their support behind customs to get that explored, should shake things up a bit. Not sure it will make the game faster or anything, but it will certainly change the viability of some characters. And if nothing else, it will further emphasize that sm4sh =/= melee.

EVO pushing for customs is very important, necessary, and good. If EVO had not pushed for customs this year, that might have put an end to customs forever -- or at least several years. It's essential to start the switch to customs now, that Apex is over and there are no more excuses to stick to playing without customs. If we were to stick to playing without customs for a few more months, people would be even more stubborn to change and there would be even more anti-custom support because people wouldn't want to relearn or adapt to new things again. It's better to just learn it now while we're still at the beginning and play with the whole package. There is a very intelligent and contributive Smashboards poster named Thinkaman, and he wrote two brilliant posts supporting Customs. The first one is an analysis of the potential impact of customs and why increased choices will improve balance and viability of characters rather than widen the gap between the best and the worst. The second is a hilarious satire that destroys all the anti-custom arguments out there that are very silly or just invalid. (Seriously read the second post, it's so funny xD) http://smashboards.com/threads/the-anticipated-impact-of-custom-special-moves-on-gameplay-and-balance-statistics.366457/ http://smashboards.com/threads/a-modest-proposal-newcomer-characters-should-not-be-allowed-at-evo.392853/
