It finally happened. After years of rumors and hype, Genesis 3 was a smashing success in San Jose over the weekend of January 15th. The tournament was the second largest Melee tournaments on record, with 1,828 entrants. The atmosphere was electric, with players from over 20 countries coming out and fighting for the coveted top 8 slots.
The event was something of a bloodbath, with an amazing number of upsets. In Doubles, Swedish Delight and Slox double eliminated Axe and Hungrybox. Rceently retired KirbyKaze was even more retired after being eliminated in pools by Connor Da Kid. Recently unretired Wobbles was re-retired by DJ Nintendo. n0ne and G$ sent PewPewU and Bladewise to losers in Pools R2. Notably, SFAT added Mew2King to his list of conquered Gods, in the Round of 16. As is becoming almost standard, Nintendude stood up and showed the strength of Ice Climbers by knocking Westballz into Loser's Bracket.
Top 8 was the culmination of 2015 and an indicator of the 2016 to follow. Axe found himself in yet another top 4, with an incredible set over SAT. Europe had another representative in Ice, who has begun to remind America that he's good as fuck. Hungrybox and Mango's rivalry continued as the GOAT eliminated Hbox in the third place match. The classic Genesis storyline concluded with a Mango/Armada grand finals, with the BOAT cementing his recent dominance of the scene with a clean win over Mango.

PAX brought forth another fantastic tournament with brilliant play. The jovial atmosphere was host to some of the most entertaining matches in January. With a strong showing from Falcons, Wizzrobe made his deepest run at a major in months, with an impressive 5th place finish. Mew2King, after a disappointing showing at Genesis, rallied back to land at 5th as well.
Most notably, Hungrybox showed easily his best play since Dreamhack winter, double eliminating Mango in Winner's Finals and Grand Finals. Hbox's movement revealed a slightly more aggressive style of Puff, having adapted to the laser camping counter strategy of Mango and Armada at Genesis. This marks his first win at a major since DHW.
