NASL Playoffs Begin Wednesday
If you can't attend the Grand Finals in person, we're offering a $10 off coupon for the stream! Enter " nasls1playoffs " when signing up for the NASL Grand Finals stream! The coupon expires the 4th of July.
Greetings from the NASL,
This Wednesday marks the beginning of the NASL playoff matches which will be hosted in their entirety by Diggity and Moletrap. In case you don't know about our format, we have been running a round robin tournament for the last 9 weeks with a total of 50 players split into 5 divisions.
The top two players from each division have now earned their spots at our live-event in Ontario, California which will be hosted by none other than Tastosis, Day[9], Incontrol and Gretorp.
Want to meet Day9 and Tastosis? Come to the NASL Grand Finals in Ontario, California!
There are a total of five spaces left to be won by the remaining players. We ranked all players in the league by overall match record and then by points to determine the twenty players who have qualified for the playoffs. Seeding ties were resolved by single games in most instances. The twenty players were then divided into five groups of four players to have mini-single elimination tournaments. All matches will be Best-of-3.
The five winners of these brackets will qualify for.... this one!
Grand Finals Bracket
Wednesday 15th June 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT (EU Rebroadcast Thursday 16th June 6pm BST, 7pm CEST, 8pm EEST)
Bracket 1: Playing for the 11th seed at the live event
Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2
The winner of this playoff will face off against Sen in the first round of the live-finals.
+ Show Spoiler [READ MORE...] +As fate would have it, the first day of playoffs is a bit of a family reunion. Zenio, Idra and Mana all came out of Division 5, the so-called group of death. Well now we have the bracket of death. And even if one of those three wins the bracket they have to play against another Division 5 player in the live-finals to advance. That's right Zenio, your prize for beating Idra is a rematch vs Sen.
Looking back at Division 5 history, we can see that Zenio beat Idra 2-1 and Mana 2-0, and that Idra beat Mana 2-0. From this small data pool, we think Zenio is the favorite in the bracket, but he could still be thrown for a loop by Dde who managed to beat the #4 seed Strelok 2-1 during divisional play.
Thursday 16th June 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT (EU Rebroadcast Friday 17th June 6pm BST, 7pm CEST, 8pm EEST)
Bracket 2: Playing for the 12th seed at the live event
Winner of Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2
The winner of this playoff will face off against July in the first round of the live-finals. Good luck!
+ Show Spoiler [READ MORE...] +Morrow was very close to taking the number 2 spot in his division and missed out by only a few points, while Socke was only a few points away from not even qualifying for next season. Morrow did however come from a slightly easier division. Now it will be Socke's chance to shine and show that he's only middle of the pack when surrounded by legends of the game.
The second half of this bracket is made up of the perennial favorite Nada, whose upset loss against Haypro knocked him out of the top two spot for his division. A 2-1 victory there would have assured him the spot ahead of Squirtle.
Friday 17th June 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT (EU Rebroadcast Saturday 18th June 6pm BST, 7pm CEST, 8pm EEST)
Bracket 3: Playing for the 13th seed at the live event.
Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2
The winner of this playoff will face off against Moon in the first round of the live-finals.
+ Show Spoiler [READ MORE...] +ACE will be facing Brat_OK in a rematch for the first game. Previously on NASL, Brat_OK had been underperforming in his division. But from this position of weakness he managed to take a 2-1 victory from ACE, condemning him to the playoffs while granting Select the golden ticket. If history repeats itself, the sole Russian in the league will have a good shot of making the finals. ACE's win rate vs Terran is only 50%, so it is fair to say that this game is a toss-up.
In the second match-up of the day, we have Fenix going up against HasuObs. Fenix has had a strong record vs Protoss this season, only losing a single game against Grubby and defeating Artosis and KiwiKaki 2-0.
HasuObs has had a very normal season. To put it simply, he beat everyone worse than him, and lost to everyone better than him. With perhaps the most predictable results of the season, he lost to ACE, MC, Select and Ret; all of whom are world-class players. He then beat Goody, Brat_OK, Catz, Machine and Stalife. 4 of those wins are against players who have not qualified for the playoffs while Brat_OK has managed to clinch the last spot available.
Saturday 18th June 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT (EU Rebroadcast Sunday 19th June 6pm BST, 7pm CEST, 8pm EEST)
Bracket 4: Playing for the 14th seed at the live event.
Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2
The winner of this playoff will face off against Strelok in the first round of the live-finals.
+ Show Spoiler [READ MORE...] +Naniwa faces Axslav for a second time this season. He took the match 2-0 in week seven of divisional play and has been pretty dominant in the final. Axslav, however, has only won a single game against Protoss over the entire season.
Sjow vs Darkforce is another rematch from earlier in the season. Even though Sjow was within one game of winning a top two spot to the Grand Finals, his loss against White-Ra cemented his fate. His rematch against Darkforce is interesting in that even though Sjow is ranked higher, Darkforce beat him 2-0 in week 8 of the NASL ending a four game win-streak.
Sunday 19th June 6pm PDT, 9pm EDT (EU Rebroadcast Monday 20th June 6pm BST, 7pm CEST, 8pm EEST)
Bracket 5: winner gets the 15th seed at the live event.
Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2
The winner of this playoff will face off against Boxer in the first round of the live-finals.
+ Show Spoiler [READ MORE...] +This is certainly an interesting day. Both MC and Kiwikaki are among the strongest players from their respective nations. MC's PVP has been lackluster in the NASL, losing games to ACE who executed some clever cheese early in the season, while Cruncher has been been performing well but not outstandingly throughout the event, having beaten the code-S Ensnare and Darkforce in the regular season.
Kiwikaki faces off against Moman, who qualified to the playoffs under rather interesting circumstances, beating July 2-0 in games where July six-pooled twice. If he had lost that game 0-2 he would not have taken the place if TLO had not withdrawn due to carpal tunnel. Regardless, he has been granted this last chance to prove himself against his colonial brother.
We hope you enjoy these games. We are pretty confident that after this week, the caliber of players who are invited to our finals will be the best the West has ever seen!
Once again if you want to see some awesome players playing at the live event, want to meet your favorite pro gamers along with our amazing casters and special guests: Day9, Artosis, and Tasteless… make sure you come to the live event!
The first season of the North American Star League will come to an end July 8 – 10, 2011 in Ontario, California.

$10 off coupon for the HD stream or is there no free stream?
"If you can't attend the Grand Finals in person, we're offering a $10 off coupon for the stream!"
We have to pay for the stream of the finals? Is that what that first paragraph is saying?
Serious fucking nerd chills from that video and the announcement.
How in God's name did you get Tastosis to come for this? Day9 lives in California, but they live on the other side of the world!
Why is White-Ra's match already decided...
You are suddenly charging for the stream now?

Awesome. The finals gonna be sooo sick. But those fights for the spots left... top players all over the place... o_O little question: do i have to buy a finals pass when i bought a normal pass allready?

So are there matches on tonight or not, or have they simply not been added to the TL event database?

omg mana vs zerg

For all the criticisms that NASL has endured this year, I think the playoffs and Lan finals is where this format will shine. The player pool is absolutely sick. And we got Day9 + Tastosis. And all the matches will be streamed which is one advantage it has over MLG. I think it'll be a great event.
On June 16 2011 06:41 GhostFall wrote: i wonder how tasteless, artosis and day 9 keep their voices from blowing out.
There is actually a whole thread about Tasteless' voice! http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=207343
Seriously, I am pretty sure they use voice coaches or have voice training to minimize stress on their vocal chords. These techniques are similar/same as those techniques that opera and Broadway singers use so that they can do 8 shows per week for months on end.
Nice I really wanted to see some Nick + Sean casting action at MLG but that never panned out. Hopefully this is my chance.

HYYYPE :D!! Tasteosis! Artless! Ninetales!

Looks pretty awesome. I can't wait for this to start.

Still no clarification on the cost for the LQ-Stream.

superb ! , but where can i find the LQ stream to those bracket matchs ?
45 Minute Drive away from home <3 Would be cool if there is some free time where we could all lan, maybe some HON scrims i know gretorp would play
The Holy Trinity of casting, wow... well, NASL really managed to bring in the best things: best players, best scheme (yay for rr groups), and now even the best casting team possible. If they manage next seasons to create real live audience experience and focus the attention more on each day of the long run, they may become unmatched as a league format eventually.

Please get the plott brothers to cast together! That was the only thing missing from MLG Columbus.
I can't seem to understand how their system works and I can't find an explanation for it. Can anyone explain to me why Morrow has 7-2 in stats and 7 points and Sheth has 7-2 in stats and 8 points? I thought you got -1 point for a loss and +1 point for a win, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
You know a tournament is going to be huge when tastosis is commentating.
Won't be able to watch the finals Q_Q
The hype video looks like it was rushed out unfinished to me. Nevertheless, the casting trio makes this a must-watch.

The 7-2 stats are the number of match won (Bo3). The points come from games won/loss differences by individual games played. Imagine football (soccer) leagues, it's the same idea with goal differences.

Probably going to get the 10$ ticket for daystosis and bracket play

+2 for 2-0, +1 for 2-1, -1 for 1-2, -2 for 0-2

Points are calculated by subtracting individual games lost from individual games won.
As an example, let's take player XyX. XyX has a 3-1 record in series. He won two of them 2-0, one 2-1, and lost one 0-2. Total wins - total losses (2+2+2)-(1+2)=6-3=3 Thus, he has 3 points, according to NASL's system.
Does that explain it?

How is that retarded? It is necesarry so there wouldn't be 7 players tied for every spot.

Oh my god. This is going to be so amazing. Love the brackets and everything.
EDIT: Does the 10$ ticket include VOD's from the pool play that's already been played?

Well tbh I find their whole round-robin group play thing boring and would rather see another system completely, but that's beside the point I guess. Personally I find it silly that Morrow is now having to battle 3 other players for a spot rather then being directly seeded into the ro32 because he has lost 1 game more than Sheth in 9 Bo3s. I'd rather have some kind of tie-breaker.

Ohhhh snappp. NASL knows how to roll =D

I couldn't find it anywhere but did they state what type of series the rounds would be in the final bracket? I hope it's not bo3 since after playing for over 2 months of matches just to lose in the round of 16 in a bo3 seems kinda lame; hope it's at least a bo5 but maybe that's just me.

Nice to see Tastosis becoming more and more involved in western scene

must say this is the first time ive gotten true "nerd chills" since the announcment of NASL. The regular season had some great games, im sure i got a few, but overall as a format i think it was oversaturated. But these playoffs are going to be baller.

That's exactly what this tournament is intended to be... A slow two month league with only a match for each player a week. It's not supposed to be a big 1-3 day tournament like MLG or Dreamhack.
HELL YA!!! I was definitely going, but now I wouldn't miss it if I broke every bone in my body!

OMFG Besides the awesome players i'm way more excited about seeing Day9+tastosis
OMG! The Plott Brothers! so awesome
Me and my buddy will be there! Pretty excited, first sc2 event i've been to. <3

Select is Korean. He just lives in the USA

This is looking awesome!
Xeris, could you relay information that the NASL Season 1 Finals information page needs timezones added to the times? Also, I'm curious as to why it says Bo16/Bo8? Should it be Ro16/Ro8?
Will there be a rebroadcast for EU of the finals?

What is his citizenship status though? Usually that's what people go by.

finally the best part will start :D

this is gonna be epic!!! NASL continues to show us they aren't playin around!! WHITE RA FIGHTING!!
Daystorposis? w/e lol but... do we have to pay $10 for the finals? That's a bit ridiculous :/
The main event will be so epic!!! Can't wait.
Aw man. I wish I was in america for these events :'(. I would so pay for stuff like this :D
Yes. I am absolutely going. If anyone is thinking of driving from either New Mexico or Arizona, PM me and hopefully we all take one car.
sweet! shoulda brought in day9 from the start, viewership wouldn't have a declining slope then.
My favorite commentators in one place! Sickk!! Can't wait :D
white-ra vs Select I smell some special tactics in that
AWSOME!!! :D Will be watching everything!
BOXER WILL WIN THIS!!!! I DREAMNT IT!
Whoah, Diggity and Moletrap commentating together!
Day9 and Tasteless? I'm in!!! :D
sick! tastosis + day9, cant wait.
oh yeah awesome players as well ;D
Cool, looking forward for this. Although the guy in charge of graphics clearly favors the USA. (They get a bigger flag than the rest of us)
So, wait, the Season 1 HD pass doesn't cover the Finals?
You should have made this VERY VERY clear on the purchase page. I would not have bought my ticket had I known this.

NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOUUURRR !!
So happy . Thanks NASL for making this happen.
DaTestosis !!! yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
NASL is improving so much, I feel certain that during the next seasons it will rise to become one of the greatest leagues we've ever seen :-))
Hi,
Can you please let me know if you can purchase HD / VOD for the Grand Finals only? and if so how much? Is it the $5 weekly?
I am interested in buying it for the grand finals, but didnt have time to watch the league stages (as it is in the hours I work), so just read LR thread and checked scores.
Thanks

Awesome announcement! However if this is true:

nerdgasm when i see the title
Aaah, this will be amazing Wish both Boxer and MC could make it further in
Sorry if it was mentioned, but can you still watch the stream in low quality if you dont buy a ticket? thanks!

MLG for sure if you have 3 days to spare. Columbus was amazing. They are putting a lot of effort into their production. There are going to be soo many games to watch. NASL is only going to be the finals right? I'm sure it will be good but if you can only do one I'd say MLG.
I paid for season 1 HD, does my purchase not cover the finals?!?!?!?!?
This stuff is looking real good!
On June 16 2011 06:35 Xeris wrote: You always have to pay for the HD stream... @_@
LQ stream is, of course, free.
What about 480p? Is it LQ or HD? After last night, I am not so sure...
Do I get this right? Day9, Artosis and Tasteless cast TOGETHER? That's crazy stuff... 3 commentators, I don't really see how this would work :/ mixing them up would be quite fun though.
Great news anyway! Good work! Love it. (but can't watch it all D': )

It has happened before in Blizzcon, worked just fine.
this will be a better ending to the tourny than i thought! Now only if Idra wins...
+ Show Spoiler + Question: Do the people who already has NASL season 1 pass have to buy the Finals pass separately?
Or they get it for free and this special promotion is for people who don't have passes yet and now can be the pass just for the finals at a lower price than the whole season pass?
If that is the case, then I'm a bit disappointed in NASL.
Edit: OK saw Xeris post later confirming that NASL season 1 pass cover the Finals as well. Phew... Gave me a scare there.
You should really make this very clear in the OP.
I read the entire OP and still have no clue who is playing in the finals

We have to pay for the stream of the finals? Is that what that first paragraph is saying? You always have to pay for the HD stream... @_@ LQ stream is, of course, free. Awesome, nice to know. Thanks.
If you bought an HQ pass == it still applies for the Grand Finals!
The discount code is for new subscribers who haven't bought the pass but want to watch the finals in HQ!
The LQ stream is, and always has been, free !
Hope this answers any questions.
This seems like it might be THE event to attend. Too bad I can only afford MLG or this. I have to go to MLG first though as it will be my first one. Next NASL maybe I can make the finals.
freaking AWESOME. Can't believe I'll get to meet all of these guys.
kinda bummed out that moletrap is casting the playoffs, (diggity is pretty legit). where is gretorp and incontrol?
I had to mute the stream yesterday cos of the incessant squealing from moletrap. Stick to the OG's in gretorp and incontrol!!!
day9+tastosis is obviously gonna be so damn sick!!
Great news :D
I also agree that incontrol and gretorp now make a great duo.
no way it cannot be good with day9 and tastosis :D
Did they spend their entire budget on the clip in the OP? That seems like the "unprecedented production values" we were promised. Glad to know it showed up somewhere.
I'm there! ^^
Will there be a NASL after-party?! XD

Yep we spent all our money on the 40 second video ^_^!
awwwwwwwwwwwwww yeah, doesn't get much better than that!
Pretty freaking awesome. I wonder if they'll do a tricast.
If I pay for the HD stream thing whatever it's called will I get to see Whitera vs SelecT, and the winner of that vs Boxer? With vod?
& same for Strelok vs Sen
Chances are we're gonna see MC vs Boxer :ooo

Possibly ~~

Isn't it unfair that Ret has to play the winner of the open bracket? I think its safe to say that the winner of that tournament has to be of a pretty high caliber and Ret as the #1 should get an easier opponent. Hm well on the other hand you could say that everybody who reached the playoffs in the NASL is pretty tough, too. Still...
Everyone in the top 16 could win the open tournament.
so if we already bought a season pass, do we have access to the HQ stream?

Yes, Xeris has said it a few times already
Brace yourself for epicness! Mad props for making this happen NASL! glgl LiquidRet!

On June 17 2011 09:54 Xeris wrote: Everyone in the top 16 could win the open tournament. Yes everyone in the top 16 is able to win it, but that only means that the one who DOES win it is on their level and in top shape as he just won like a trillion BoX, where you could get to the playoffs by winning 5/9 matches. It's not a huge deal and I still will be enjoying this a great lot, just wantet to put my thoughts out there.
Please oh please say that the Plott brothers will do a round of casting together and not as all 3 of them. I just want Tastless and Day 9 to do one set together must be awesome.
so happy to see this news, bit surprising dj wheat didn't get in on this
Will there be Inc and gretorp casting games there on a 2nd optional stream?

Im sure the plott brothers will do a set together, they all need breaks, so i guess they will take turns with each other, so im super stoked for that

this is huge! omg cant wait
can't wait, this is going to be so sweet.
Does anyone know if the are tickets left? Because the more people the greater experience for everyone; the crowd, the viewers (from streams) and the players.
day9 + tastosis = DAYSTOSIS!!!!!!!!!
Planning a viewing party for this, will be awesome.

Will they be selling tickets at the door? I'm going on vacation in the 1st week of July and don't know if I'll be back in time to go, so I'd rather not put 25 bucks down now.
Yes, we will be selling tickets at the door! =D
Well Imo, they had to do this, because statistics were very very bad when I saw them last time..
I can't wait for this! How awesome is it going to be to see someone walk away with 50 grand.
Daeemn! that is gonna be awesome, watching some awesomecraft 2 with awesome casters, can't wait!
<generic, predictable comment of approval> <clarify what high standard the games are going to have, explain my urgency to view them> <announcing my appreciation of the casters> <other obnoxious pladder>

I wonder how Tastosis will function with a third man thrown into it. Either way the casters are all amazing and the games are going to be amazing!

worked fine at blizzcon, i enjoyed it.
Day9 + Tastosis, I don't see how NASL could get any better.
Cant wait for the finals. Tastosis being there just made it so much more exciting to go
Has anyone bought their ticket for the finals online ? I'm wondering if i should buy online or buy at the door. Are they mailed, or just printed out ? I don't want to order them and receive them too late.

Yea I just got done buying my tickets online. The tickets are printable in PDF format and I don't think there is even an option to have them mailed to you. So you should be good to go, and don't need to worry about them reaching you on time. Hope to see you there, I'm excited! ^_^
Debating buying tickets...only live 15 minutes away from the convention center (it's actually where I took the bar last year lol). Sounds awesome, just need to talk a friend or two into joining me I guess.
Super excited!!!

So excited as this will be my first live SC2 event. Thanks for bringing us this awesome tournament with great games! Can't wait to see the improvements you guys will bring come season 2.
Alot of Zergs are seeded :-O //EDIT: No Balance-whine

Hey now, I thought Geoff and Gretorp did a pretty good job ^_^
