So my daily ladder streams have been off the air for the past couple of weeks. You could call me ladder-averse, I simply don't find laddering fun, I get too frustrated. So I've created a show for people like me.
And here we go. Showcraft is a thrice-weekly broadcast that showcases everything Starcraft 2 has to offer, from the top-tier, to the bronze league, from the orthodox to the highly unusual, from laddering to custom maps and mods. It's packed full of live viewer interactivity. FFAs with the audience, customs such as Nexus Wars, Star Battle, Smashcraft and more with viewers. Every Friday a live quiz-show will be hosted with contestants picked from the audience. Contestants will battle it out in a multi-round test of their Starcraft knowledge to win a weekly cash prize.
The show will also feature casting of some of the best and most entertaining players. Ladder games will also be played, with an emphasis on unorthodox and entertaining strategies. For those who want to learn there will be informative casts for newbies of bronze/silver league matches, live coaching sessions with well-known players as well as interviews and Q+As with the people that make the Starcraft scene what it is.
The show will air every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 19:00 GMT (+00:00) beginning on October 24th, airing live on http://www.twitch.tv/totalbiscuit. All episodes will be archived to my Youtube channel over at http://www.youtube.com/totalbiscuit to watch whenever you like.
So join me for Starcraft 2's first true variety show, celebrating all the things which make Starcraft 2 such a big part of so many people's lives.
All stream ad revenue goes into funding SHOUTcraft Invitational tournaments
Love your stuff TB, the amount of work you put in is nothing short of amazing. This sounds absolutely amazing but damn it'll be on 3am my time and much as I'd like to, my body can't function without sleep so it looks like its just the VODs for me.
I wanted to suggest you something like this when you stopped laddering, but since I know you don't like to be told what to do I just shut about it. In the end, though, I always knew you'd come up with it, because this idea just makes the most sense to me.
I do have one question though, in the great tradition of quiz shows, the MC (that being TB himself not the Korean mastermind ) is usually joined by an incredibly beautiful and not always superfluos hostess so any chance that we can be treated to a bit of Genna? I have to admit I do miss listening to her weekly roundups and I'm sure a female touch (stop sniggering you nerds) would add to the no doubt awesomeness of the shows.

FYI yes TB has an NA account and has played fans on the NA server before. he probably has a Korean account too _i--i_ maybe look for this character on the Korean ladder.

Starcraft happens to encompass two games. Starcraft Brood War Starcraft II.
Only Starcraft II will be covered in this event. Brood War is absent of mention. Duh?
Name a western Broodwar show.
Exactly. Irrelevant point. Starcraft is accurate, Starcraft 2 is Starcraft. Pointless nitpicking is pointless.
Da hell? Who cares if there is no Western Brood War show, the possibility for one always exists. It's in sponsored threads, how would a Brood War follower know whether or not this would be a new show or not? Simply by curiosity's sake it's misleading. It's not irrelevant brah, irrelevant is anything unrelated to dis subject. I think it's amply relevant. Creating a soccer show and making a thread in The New Kingdom of Ratatouille doesn't make it "irrelevant" just because soccer doesn't exist in said made up fictional country. nt though, enjoy your show.

The possibility for a western broodwar show is extremely slim since the popularity of that game is pretty low. Besides what does it matter if the 2 is in the title or not anyone will be able to tell that it isn't about BW after a few seconds of watching and if you can't then it isn't a problem because you are blind and deaf. Your soccer analogy is very dumb as well and not even relevant in this scenario.
one idea i had for a while may be appropriate for this type of show:
race wars!
each episode players of one race will face off agains other races and score will be kept per race. The leading race could be awarded a advantage such as permanent map choice. For large leads advantages such as not allowing one tier 3 unit of the other race could be given. Of course after 10 rounds or so there would be a restart and one race would be declared the winner of a season.
i think the race vs race thing has not been prominently used in a competition as far as i know and it could be a lot of fun =D
Looking forward to the quiz, going to be so epic. I hope you would take user submitted questions as well. Some of the stuff you would get could be a laugh.

Can you please leave this alone if you have no interest in it? You are just here to troll around with your BW > SC2 stuff. I don't think this is needed here.
I just made a TL account because I am so freaking excited that you are coming back to sc2 TB and I wanted to express it! (I Suck At Starcraft II was amazing btw ) I wish I could watch live but sadly i usually can't with work and all but so glad to hear you are going to put up VODs so I can enjoy all of the hilarious content I'm sure this show will produce. Best of luck good sir, you are an amazing man and an inspiration to me, can't wait for the 1st show on monday!
That's gonna be better than TLAttack. Yes ! i said it... Is it "irrelevant" to say that i'm a TB fanboy ? :p
Too bad i can't watch it live (low internet connection). I'll have to wait the uploads on your Youtube channel.
Thank you TB for : - Doing so much good things to the E-sports ! - Commentating Starcraft like it's pay per view wrestling - Making jokes that are more idiotic than Tasteless's - Admit that you suck at Starcraft - And don't even care about it.
Sounds interesting, however I don't understand why people find laddering to be frustrating or difficult. It's just a game. If you lose you lose and if you win you win. Most people aren't pro gamers anyways so their lives aren't dependent on their performance.

I've never liked competitive play at anything much. Particularly gaming. It's supposed to be fun and when I feel like I am going to lose more than just the game by doing something interesting, or messing around, it stops being fun.
I think the problem would compound even more if you felt you had to produce quality, watchable play while commentating every single day.

For same reason any multilayer game can be frustrating/difficult. There are other people involved, and some of them are there to ruin Your fun. Sure, easy to say "It's just a game, enjoy yourself and don't care about anything else", but first thing first - not everyone has such nerves of steel, and second, when you get cheesed 8 games in a row it stops being fun, You just want to turn it off and go do something less annoying. When you are simple gamer at home, doing it just for fun - it's fine, but TB streamed his ladder to get ad revenue to fund ShoutCraft Invitational prize pool, which makes it more like work than just time to relax at evening. Can't just take a 30 minute break to cool off mid stream or go grab a snack that easily.
To stay on topic however. Best of luck TB, can't wait to see how it plays out and hope it will be as awesome, if not better, than rest of the content You provide.
I have exactly the same problem as TB, and thus hugely exited for this, I love starcraft 2, but hate playing 1v1's, can't wait to see what this show brings ^^ (hopefully lots of guest appearances, I can imagine games like 1 pro vs 2 or 3 nubs etc :D )
Forgive me TB - I'd started to doubt you when you said it would be worth the wait, but this is starting to look like it will be brilliant.
Also loving the fact you've already invited desRow on the show! Will make deciding what to watch much easier if your rounding up all my favourite streamers

I'm basically the complete opposite: I love competitive play and that's a reason why I don't play(at least for the moment). I'm too bad for competitive play and ladder, while it kind of tries to be, is not competitive but rather boring. Fun for a while, but still boring. Online tournaments are cool, but not cool enough and yet I absolutely love playing and watching Starcraft in offline tournaments. I have been in one LAN tournament so far and it was so fun to play in.
Does that make my laddering frustrating or difficult? Frustrating maybe, but that's the same in every adrenaline-heavy game for me. If I lose a duel in TF2(first-to-20, MGE), I'm a bit frustrated unless it was an even game. Same with SC2, same with almost every multiplayer versus game I play. Does that make my laddering difficult? No.
I would love to see more TF2 ESEA/ETF2L(trying to get into competitive tf2, but without league experience getting into a team is a pain in the butt) type leagues in SC2, where you have an arranged match or two a week which directly affect your league standings and at the end of each season the top of a division will get promoted and the bottom would get demoted.
I'm very eager to see what kind of show this will end up being. The concept seems totally awesome and I'm especially looking forward to how the Quiz show will proceed.
My question would be: Will there be any section to the show like what the beta Shoutcraft was, like pitting viewers against some more known players as well as against each other etc.? Time might be a concern as it's aimed to be a 90min show.

So excited. The new format seems to be very promising. Hope the new show will live up to the high TB quality standards. Also, it would be nice, if you would try and play every race, not just T. Anyway, looking forward to the show!)

This mean you're going to learn Protoss? :D
I'm going to try and learn all races, I'll be invited coaches of all races to the show.
This is infinetly better than ISS2 TB, great idea you (and your team I guess) had there. I very much liked the coaching with desrow, he was awesome and you wer actually doing pretty well. The costume games with viewers/subs were awesome so far, keep it up! It's great to see you actually having fun while playing SC2!
One question though: It's probably too soon for this, but have you decided yet if the timeframe for this ( 2hours+) is a thing you're going to settle on (for now at least)or are you going to make it shorter/longer?
LTWFTW, Loving the show, keep up the good work! Great message, love the theme that SC2 is more than just the ladder. Have fun with it, stick with it, and we'll watch.
Really great show I really enjoyed the first two shows. One thing I would suggest as an addition is when your doing coaching shows try to do a "commentary" of a rep but rather than a normal cast make it a discussion as the insight a pro can is invaluable and will help both yourself (TB) and the audience understand the game better. This may be difficult to fit in but could be well worth it as a lot of people get enjoyment from SC2 both as a sport (the shout'y stuff filled with shooting and explosions) and the strategy and depth of the game.
Other than that keep up the good work this is just my opinion and will continue to watch regardless of whether anything like this happens.
Hey TB! I really enjoyed watching the show today. It's good to see you actually having fun in SC2!
A bit of feedback: while the ladder coaching was pretty cool, I think it might be a better idea to draw a few subscribers that are at about your level (league) with whatever race you play and play custom games against them so that your coach can observe rather than watch the stream. This would mean more chances for your subscribers to participate, a more direct and effective coaching experience for you and a bit less of a confusing segment for us viewers.
I was also wondering why you played Terran in your 2v2 with Desrow. You were obviously having quite a bit of fun fooling around with him and it was a good segment, but it seemed like a bit of a missed opportunity to learn more about Protoss (and its mechanics), being able to do crazy stuff (go go Carriers!) and not worry about results much in 2v2, rather than stressing in the cutthroat environment of 1v1. I think it'd be a great idea to play the race you were coached at in your 2v2 segment.
All in all though, good show, I'm glad to see you back on the air and will definitely tune in next time.

Also think the first idea in this post is awesome good job person, second one not too shabby either
really enjoying the show. especially the unorthodox laddering. i think 3 1-2 hour shows a week is probably too much for people who want to catch it all but thats just my opinion
TotalBiscuit, I love you for this. I was a little skeptical when I first read about the concept - it sounded rather lame, if I'm to be perfectly honest. If these first two shows are any indicator of future performance, however, this show is approximately 10x better than your ladder stream. Please keep it up, and make sure to use the proceeds to continue to fund more tournaments.
Having watched both of the episodes of Showcraft - Here's a couple of points that occurred to me:
(Some of this may not be directly related to show content.)
Pros: - Highly entertaining, community involving show. - Healthy Mix of Competitive (ladder) play and community interaction. - Relatively Troll-Free and somewhat enjoyable chat. - Highly Reasonable mods. - Professionally produced and a good attitude maintained. - You actually appear to be enjoying this, as opposed to the tail end of ISSC2. - Shows SC2 as the diverse game that it is, as opposed to a solely competitive (and somewhat repetitive side).
Cons: - Only three times a week (This is a jest). - Not your fault - But I found the guest Coach audio quality to be relatively low. (Probably a fault on my end or with a microphone.) - Coaching (again, this is subjective) Seemed a little too direct to learn from; more of a narrated build order. - Assuming that Desrow was watching the stream to coach seemed a little off with what was happening on-screen. (Subjective opinion.) - Potential Show burnout. (This is more a personal worry of mine.)
Overall:
A highly entertaining, high-quality and well-produced show. Keep up the great work.
Quiz night on Friday!
Edit: A point that didn't quite fit in anywhere - I'm unsure about the timescale for the show. Evidently the time for the pilot (and probably in the first few weeks); will vary wildly, although I'm wondering what it'll settle at over time. Three hours a night for three nights a week could be viewed as an unreasonable amount of time for someone with your career.
On October 20 2011 05:46 Pokebunny wrote: Sounds like a great show have always liked TB and found him very entertaining. Quiz on SC knowledge intrigues me.. as does coaching stuff. :p
The episode with desRow was great! Laid back and informative. It'd be so much better if instead of laddering you could grab viewers who wore bronze-gold level to play against so that the coach can watch or something, but that's vulnerable to smurfing and such...I dunno. It's tricky to make it work. Nevertheless, despite technical limitations I really enjoyed it.
Gave the first show a go, but the first large chunk was just the same as ISS2, i.e. you getting beat by someone going mutas and complaining about them because you are terrible at dealing with them. By this stage I was pretty disapointed because I was looking forward to a change of pace with the new show, it isn't enjoyable to watch when rather than sending a pack of marines or building some turrets... you just whine about mutas as they destroy your base un-apposed. Even "damn I am so bad at dealing with mutas" would be better than "Fucking Mutas, there is nothing you can do about them, they just kill every expansion you try and take"... which is a ridiculous statement that you made in episode 1. I thought that the laddering sessions were going to be different with you taking a light hearted view on it. I am going to skip to episode two and watch the Protoss coaching, hopefully this change of style will occur here, the other posts about episode 2 seem generally positive and I am a fan of yours when you aren't so miserable.
TL:DR: Episode one began just the same as ISS2 which put me off. Will give it a second chance with episode 2 shortly. Hopefully you can take something constructive out of this if you read it.
Edit: Watching episode 2 and it is a far better watch! Really enjoying it. Good work, more like this please!
Loving the show so far TB, may I also say that you must only do the show if you are enjoying doing it, angry TB does not compare to happy TB, if you are not feeling it one day then please don't make yourself do anything, we all know what happens when you do that.
You have always put out quality stuff TB and I hate for you to let your dedication to the fans to comprimise that.
Hey TB! I'm liking the show so far, keep up the good work! My suggestion would be to make your custom map part of the show like the Mod your WoW of Azeroth Daily. Every week(or whatever schedule you choose) select a new custom map to play. These may be single RPG maps, or just multiplayer randomness. I suggest you do a little bit of research on SC2Mapster, or selecting one from the up and coming section. It may be a bit of work, but I believe it would be worth it for the variety and longevity of the show, and as a showcase for the mapmakers.
Looks great so far. The less frustrated You get, TB, the better, and more enjoyable it is for everyone so really, really hope You will manage to keep that attitude. Maybe whenever You feel like You could get frustrated simply just expand on the viewers 1v1 or even team/ffa casted matches, since casting was always Your stronger side and You seem much more comfortable with it.
The coaching session and all around play with the coaching player was awesome in ep.2, but it in a way also depends on the guest. Hopefully they will manage to keep up with desROWs show ^^
Man, TBs Quizshow is suprisingly hard. I expected some easy questions about unit stats, but there are actually some very unexpected questions about the SC lore.
Great show, TotalBiscuit. Shows that you still have something to teach to Diamond Players :p

Hey TB, first of all thank you for your ongoing dedication to SC2! (:
Here is my personal feedback: After watching all three episodes of the new show now, i have to say i enjoyed your serious placement match (the one on Shattered against the fast HT protoss) the most. This game was quite good, i really think you could be much much higher than gold, if you'd focus more during games, like in this one. Maybe you could get some more coaching, not only a coach who tells you "build this now, now that!", but rather some general game issues like when to attack, building placement, army composition or fight engagement. I'd like to see you improving rather than raging or playing wild builds.
So my vote goes to: [x] more serious laddering (maybe with a new account?)

I have to agree with this. Your play in that game really impressed me, it being better than my mid-plat play. I like to watch you play well. In addition, it would be beneficial to the rest of your show if you increased your skill level. When you do unorthodox strats, they would have a lot more viability than unorthodox strats as performed by a person in gold league. It could be like Day9's Funday Mondays where he'll occasionally find something, like mass queen, that actually works really well. I like it when people mess with the metagame.
BUT if you don't want to try to improve, that's really your choice. It's your show, after all. I am but a lonely cipher in a sea of other faceless people, all just watching to see what you will do.

TotalBiscuit really can play a lot better than he shows because - to be frank - his crisis management is not very good, so once something goes wrong or not to plan, everything falls apart. The only solution to that is playing more, but that is of course frustrating.
I'd say do whatever you want, TotalBiscuit, as long as you have fun, your viewers will have fun, too.
PS: Team Monobattles would be nice, maybe in a show together with Day9 (though that might cause problems because he'd probably be too dominant in the show and unintentionally steal it :p)
i prefer the opposite of most of the posters above. . the games where you do ridiculous things are far more entertaining. . no offense but if i wanted to see ultra high level play i would watch a different stream. . i laughed so hard during the mass marine and raven. maybe a mix of serious games and fun ones to keep everyone happy
I've only just started watching this show this weekend, but i gotta say that is is very entertaining and informative. I will continue to watch Keep up the great work!
Hey TB, someone posted a great idea for the quiz in the youtube comments and I know you dont read youtube comments.
Copy Paste of won20529jun's comment: "I have a suggestion on how to make a fun Quiz show:
1) Make a small flat map with 4 equal-sized plateaus (high-grounds); number the plateaus 1,2,3,4 2) Invite many contestants to the map 3) Each contestant is represented by a ground unit 4) Ask a multiple-choice question and the contestants move to the plateau that they think is the right answer 5) Flood low ground with lava 6) TB nukes the plateaus of wrong answers or biscuityamatoes them."
This would be pretty damn cool if you can get someone to make a custom map for this idea.
It is amazing,it is so much better than the old format I love the addition of Coaches(hoping for all Races :D)also showing interesting Custom Maps that have real potencial.
now TB needs to learn from what the Coaches tell him, and accept his faults, lying to DesRow that his macro is solid was not nice :p

This is pretty damn hilarious. Doing the quizshow ingame would give a great visual element. I'll see if I can find a modder willing to put it together.

Only problem i see with it, is that again it would be an instance where EU players can't compete with US and vice versa (without having 2 accounts) because You would need to host the game on one of the servers, while the Skype quiz at least is "open for everyone".
But then again it would be so much more entertaining for us watching the stream.. <.<

Current stream description says: "TotalBiscuit is resting Monday then in Finland Wednesday and Friday. No Showcraft, but ASUS ROG Tournament cast will happen." Consider it cancelled.

This would be pretty damn cool if you can get someone to make a custom map for this idea.

this would be so hilarious, just make sure the TB can be a ghost with a top hat, that insta nukes anywhere in the map. or just press a button , 1 2 3 to nuke the wrong plateau. would be awesome a in game quiz. make it happen! to the modder, make sure he cannot nuke all plateaus, cuz i can see it happening

Jesus christ TB, you need to relax a little. Watch the replay, see where you went wrong, theres no need to get so angry :/. The game can be frustrating, but the best way to deal with that is to figure out exactly what you should have done. Also you figured out why pure roach is fairly terrible vs terran. Stimmed marines with medivacs are very cost effective vs that.

This is all really easy to say when you're not being flamed every single day for not playing enough.

Oh for sure, I understand. I feel we are in a situation which you were in a while back about responding to haters. It really does accomplish nothing, and I'm sure it frustates you even more . I can never put myself in your shoes, but you must really try, for the sake of your true fans.

The worst thing is feeling that sinking time you really should be spending working on other games, into playing SC2 trying to get better, accomplishes nothing.

Well its your time, do what makes you happy. Do you want to get better at SC2? Then play SC2, you don't have to stream it, in fact I think not streaming it would probably be better so you don't have to deal with some of the ridiculous criticism you are getting. For the type of casting you do, I don't think being i Master league or even Bronze league makes any difference to the actual quality of your cast. All it really does is chance they way people perceive any strategical advice you give, which honestly, shouldn't bother you too much if you are paired with someone like DApollo or Day9.
TB, i understand your anxciety for loosing, and ending up hating the ladder.
But you should know something, you have a great, strong personality. You are funny, you have a cool accent and you try. You dont need to be the best at the game, you shoutcast better than probally 99% of the ladder.
Kids who can sit home and play all day do eventually get good. You are traveling all over the world shoutcasting, and preparing your weekly show, dont beat yourself up to much man. For every 10th true fan you have, you will most likely get at least 1 hater.
From a true fan, that have listened to your youtube clips ever since "blue plz".
