atar will not be hosting the 2022 World Cup of Soccer, FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger told Sport Bild on Monday.
"I personally think that, in the end, the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar," he said, citing the region's sweltering summer climate. "Medics say that they cannot accept responsibility with a World Cup taking place under these conditions."
Qatar organizers, who won the right to host the tournament in 2010, claim the intense heat, routinely rising above 40 Celsius, will not be a problem because of the cooling technologies it plans to employed in stadiums, training areas and fan zones, there is still widespread concern over the health of the players and visiting supporters.
"They may be able to cool the stadiums," Zwanziger countered, "but a World Cup does not take place only there. Fans from around the world will be coming and travelling in this heat and the first life-threatening case will trigger an investigation by a state prosecutor.
1. Accepting his statement at face value, they didnt realize it was hot in Qatar when they were awarding the initial bid? 2. They care more about hot weather instead of the anti-gay laws and use of slave labor to build the stadiums? 3. Its going to be awkward giving back those bribes back. 4. In the context of Qatar being forced to give up its independent foreign policy by SA regarding Syria/Egypt, this is an extra slap in the face, maybe Saudi is responsible for this too.

@#2 -
Well, anti-gay laws and slave labor doesn't have a tendency to kill people visiting to watch the WC. And to be fair, I thought Qatar was being lambasted for pretty much using slave labor also?
Edit - lambasted by everyone except the WC selection group, I mean.

This most likely get closed because it belongs to the football thread but if not here is something some people (including me obviusly ) came up as a main point:
I terms of big sports events there are 3 types of countrys currently: "poor" countrys that just doesnt have the infrastructure for something like that, i would say around 150. "rich" countrys that dont really like these big, expensive events anymore. EURO 2020 is played in all europe not because it unites or some shit it is played because no one wanted it in the first place. "bad" countrys that the west doesnt like but have money such as Russia (currently), Qatar or China.
If you look at Olympics or other big events the only country really interested in is Turkey and they are rpretty much on the edge of democracy.
I dont think it will happen because if FIFA takes it away they are opening pandoras box. No application from any of the "bad" countrys would be save anymore and the list of potential hosts would get extremly small.
Also i think the "slave labour" thing is heavily overused and it is marginalising what happend in North America and other parts in the world. Yes the working conditions are horrible but even there they arent selling your kids on a market wit hchains around their neck and brandings on their skin.

Its just an offcial excuse. They where already talking about not hosting the world cup there for. Personally i believe world cups should be only hosted in countries that already have the proper infrastructure. Ese creating enourmous cathedrals in the desert that once the world cup is over become useless to anybody

Great, maybe now we can start discussing Russia, I hope it isnt too late...

Well building worthless stuff to attract people is kind of their thing.

What rubbish. Do you even know what goes on in Qatar? I am an Indian and personally have seen/heard horror stories of uneducated/lowskilled people travelling to Dubai/Qatar with high hopes, only to have their passports seized and being overworked, underpaid and herded like sheep in communal living quarters, with no bathrooms, limited food and horrendous living conditions. In the past 2 years there have been more than 1000 cases of "natural deaths" due to cardiac arrests. (These are only official numbers by Qatar govt. God knows how many coverups there have been), just among these bonded laborers.
Just because South America had human trafficking, doesn't justify the bullshit that goes on in Qatar. Your lack of empathy is horrifying.

Some semi-important person said something equivalent to this every ~3 months since qatar was awarded the world cup. And it will keep on going until 2022. I dont think we need a new thread on each occasion, same as it was until now. Or is there really something new this time?
And EURO 2020 is NOT played all over europe because no single country would host it; but because Platini wanted it that way. Just look at the list of potential bids for 2024 (though germany will be overwhelming favorites, so there might not be another serious other bid in the end after all).

The logistical nightmare of canceling it and having it somewhere else would be so crazy and expensive there's no way they do it. Qatar could probably legally rip them a new one as well or something, unless theres like really damning proof they totally bribed their way in.
It's a shame. I think from the get go if FIFA was more interesting in growing the sport it should have gone somewhere like China or the US where hosting it would have been easy and the 100s of millions of citizens there would be very willing to get more into the sport.

I will not deny that the working conditions are horrible and they are a very legit reason to not give our money to them to host a football tournament.
But to give you perspective what it meant to be a slave in the 17/18th century the average space for a slave during the journey from africa to america was 4 square feet. Your TV is bigger then that. I wouldnt compare working conditions or something like that because they will differ due to the globalisation but keep in mind that slavery at this time was something most parts of the worlds were ok with or even saw it as necessary. This psychological fact makes it more horible then anything we see today. Its the same with something like the holocaust for example. The numbers arent "that big" in terms of death but the way it was executed and how the Germans and other saw it as "just" and "reasonable" makes it so horrifying for us today.
Right before the american revolution white, land (and slave) owning men called themselves "slaves" because they had to pay taxes. This kind of marginalising of slavery is very problematic in my opinion in a way some idiots say "naa it couldnt be that bad".

Your logic is flawed because there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" countries; this is demagogic propaganda that seeks to conceal the strictly amoral logic of capitalism.
Every "humanitarian" act is fueled by ulterior motives. If this wasn't the case, the so-called superpowers of the West would have intervened a long, long time ago in the true tragidies of our modern world: Sudan, Somalia, Burma, Pakistan, CAR, Nigeria, and so on.
