I don't know how many people on TL.net follow cricket, but I think those who do - especially our Australian folks (and my heart goes out to you guys) - know the details.
Batting for South Australia against New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia batsman (batter) Phil Hughes was hit on the side of the neck two days ago by a bouncer by NSW fast bowler Sean Abbott. The hit compressed Hughes' vertebral artery, causing it to rupture and bleed into the brain.
Hughes collapsed on the pitch and was immediately given CPR and then rushed by helicopter from the ground to St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. He had surgery to ease pressure on his brain, but never came out of the coma that he was in and passed away earlier today at the age of 25 having won 26 Test caps for Australia (including in the Ashes against England) and being the youngest player to score centuries in both innings of a Test (against South Africa). Many from the cricket community, including close friend and captain Michael Clarke - who read the statement announcing the death on behalf of the family - were there in person or were quick to send their wishes and later condolences.
There's a heck of a lot more than I can say, so I'll leave you a couple of links. Sydney Morning Herald home page ESPN Cricinfo coverage hub
Edit: Adding details.

Saw Pup's press conference. Dreadfully sad, condolences to his friends and family and also to Sean Abbott.

He played for my local team a few years back (Worcestershire) he was fantastic for us and had a sick average in T20. After us he got picked up by national team and really started to break through. He had a bad ashes series and i think he got dropped afaik. However he was so young still, especially in terms of cricket. When i heard the news i was like wow, didn't even realize you could get hurt that much on the back of your head, then to wake up to see he passed away was just shocking.
Terrible news rip. Heart also goes out to the bowler who has dealt that fatal blow, makes me sad even more.

Really? I'll be darned. And that injury, Pandemona, has apparently happened only 100 times and this is the very first time it's happened in cricket, so that makes it even more tragic. It also is terrible to see how Abbott's been taking it - I hope he plays on.

I wonder if they'll start having a day in Hughes' memory like Day 3 of the New Year Test at the SCG is Jane McGrath Day...

Absolutely devastated. Watched Michael Clarke's address this morning and it's absolutely heart breaking to see him so sad, and struggling to deliver his speech. RIP Hughesy. Hopefully Sean Abbott has enough support around him; it's got to be so hard for him right now.

I think he got hit in the neck right under his ear as opposed to the head itself. Caused the artery there to compress and split which led to a huge brain bleed. He was apparently luck to even make it to the hospital alive.
Just a horrible thing to happen. So sad.

Yeah, absolutely terrible. Clarke was clearly devastated this morning. I don't see how they can play the first test at this point...

Rip. Is a cricket ball that hard that a throw could hurt so much? I have no clue how the sport is played. I always thought that being hit by a batted ball would be more scary.

A cricket ball is very hard though the ball that hit Hughes wasn't really 'hard' as such, in fact people watching the match said it was one of Abbott's slower bouncers which was why Hughes was caught off guard. But like Bob said, it hit him in a weird spot just below the neck and crushed an artery causing massive internal bleeding in his brain. Just for reference, Mitchell Johnson usually bowls around 150 km/h
Edit: Just to clarify however that a slow bouncer is an oxymoron, every bouncer is fast and designed to intimidate the batsmen

Ah so its very unfortunate that it hit that vulnerable spot.
