Y Englands fallen into that trap before, you dont absolutely have to have a gifted world class playmaker to be a decent attacking team+ Show Spoiler + (just like having one doesnt really always work)

Welbeck goal record for England is nuts, that is why he goes. He scored 6 goals in Euro 2016 qualification in 1 short of group top scorer Rooney and he also gets injured a fair bit. He has 15 goals in 37 appearances at England level, which is pretty good considering he played 5 times in last 4 years xD Wilshire didn't go because question marks over fitness and Banana doesn't go because he is still injured period. I am happy with the squad minus the big ommision of our best left back in Bertrand in my opinion. He is world class but got overlooked for some reason i don't know why.

So yeah Cahill being in bigger and more important games at the highest level is no contest vs Smalling. Chelsea also been competing for the league more so than Yanited those years as well and has almost double the caps of Smalling xD

Gaal cought a LOT of flak for selecting Kuijt for the 2014 WC: he was old, and not really in shape (although he had actually had a really good season in Turkey). One of the reasons for selecting him was as a player the rest of the team could look up to, who worked hard and didn't complain. Unlike divas like v. Persie or Sneijder (who are undeniably technically better). Turns out, it worked. Kuijt was one of the stand-out players for the Dutch team. Taking along a player for his mentality can be a really good idea. I don't know enough about Engerland to know if Cahill is that kind of player, but given that there are a lot of youngsters in the team, having some experienced players who you *want* as a role model is great.

Yep, Cahill never been in press for doing anything wrong, barely does stuff wrong and has been a loyal player for Chelsea since 2012. Got to learn off of JT and some good managers, does all he can, yes he isn't the best cb in england right now i agree, is smalling better than him as a CB, maybe, im not sure, i would play Maguire and Stones over them both for sure. With Jones he is a lot better this season even with his injuries, Yanited have a good defensive record and it was mainly when Jones was playing (Yanited fans agree right?) So i think taking him over Smalling is defo the right choice there.

Well in your opinion Smalling is better than Cahill but for me he is no where near the same level. I agree Jones is better than them both right now when fit though thats for sure. Cahill isn't going to play nor would Smalling if he went, the England centre back pairing isn't a pairing as we play a back 3. Thus Cahill from the sidelines with more experience in big games than Smalling has had, is better to take. Stones - Maguire, these are the 2 best centre backs in England right now easily, with Jones the next fully fit probably. Walker playing in the back 3 there is something Southgate wants because of probably what Steve Holland has pushed for due to how Dave does it at Chelsea and what Steve Holland oversaw with his time at Chelsea. So the line up will be; Walker - Stones - Maguire, all 3 are so comfortable on the ball and that is why it is like that in our group games especially if you remove Belgium we are going to have 80% possession and Smalling and Cahill are irrelevant with the ball, more so Smalling as well.

Lallana and Wilshere's creativity will be much needed, I don't think Henderson/Dier do much in attack and Alli is basically a striker relying on others don't really see why Welbeck is needed in place of another CM.. Right except neither Lallana (who isnt really all that creative anyway and certainly not as a number 10) nor Wilshere have actually displayed enough creativity or been available consistently enough to prove they would merit a spot over the current English setup. England have fallen into that trap far to many times in the past. my lineup would be something like Butland? Stones Cahill Jones Walker Young Dier Sterling Ali Lingard ( I really like this kid) Kane
