Lions, Vikings, 49ers or Raiders when its Bowl time? ATL Falcons made a superbowl appearance recently only to lose badly iirc but still i would want to see someone new dominate the NFL rather then boring brady and Gronk inc. I think generally paying people the most is not a receipt for success in the NFL. And you can say a lot of shit about Gronk, but if there is one thing he is not it is boring! But I too would love to see a changing of the guard.

The Pats are a special case because 1) Brady, arguably the best QB in football for many years, has been taking discounts, 2) Belichik has been the best coach in the league, and 3) the Pats have been in a really shitty division and largely shitty conference, making it pretty easy for them to routinely get to and through the playoffs. The Eagles and Seahawks were able to take advantage of rookie contract QBs and, combined with some uncommonly excellent drafting, stack the rest of the roster through free agency. I don't think that this is reliably repeatable (Niners came close to doing it during the Harbaugh years). But for the most part, the teams making and winning the Super Bowl over the past ten years have had marquis QBs on near-market deals. It's not going to guarantee a team a Super Bowl victory -- the team still has to draft well and otherwise assemble a good team (see Raiders, Lions, Redskins, etc) -- but it's generally a necessary precondition to be successful.

Can't believe I'm saying this (because Brady and the Patriots are the worst), but Stafford needs to be more like Brady and take some pay cuts. It's all well and good that the Lions have an awesome QB, but when they can't afford good Oline that doesn't mean much

Part of why Brady is rated so high is he almost always had a great team around him. Peyton, Stafford, basically anyone else you name has not. And as Daunt pointed out being in an awful division helped out as well.

As for the Patriots specifically, I don't know how talented that they have really been -- particularly over the last several years. The O line has always been reliably good (probably due to coaching more than anything else). But beyond that, they haven't had a lot of elite talent outside of Brady and Gronk. Their D-lines have been pedestrian recently. The linebacking corps has been solid, but nothing special. They have done well getting DBs, but that's the most that you can say for their personnel on defense. Frankly, I chalk up most of the Pats success to excellent coaching.

The 20 QBs in the Superbowl in the last 10 years: Tom Brady: 4x, submarket P. Manning 3x, submarket 2x, market 1x B. Roethlisberger 2x, market R. Wilson 2x, Rookie D. Brees 1x, Market K. Warner 1x, Submarket A. Rodgers 1x, Submarket E. Manning 1x, market J. Flacco 1x, rookie C. Kaepernick 1x, rookie C. Newton 1x, market M. Ryan 1x, market Foles/Wentz 1x, Submarket/Rookie Aside from a few really good, QBs, it seems as much about the entire team getting paid too much as it is just the QB. Sure guys like Flacco prolly never will make the SB at market price, but plenty of guys can, but probably only 1 time in your career with perfect conditions.

The AFC has had the most consistent teams since the patriots reign started. The Steelers and Colts had great teams they just couldn't beat the pats with any consistency

Last year was particularly lopsided, and this year looks to be similar.

In other news I’ve been hawking over Dalvin Cook’s ig story and Cousins is looking like a natural with the Vikings. I have a crazy feeling this will be Digg’s year.

There hasn't been many years I feel like the NFC has been favored but I can't check the history right now

He will certainly play this season, the question we're all asking is whether he'll be ready for week 1 or not
