For tips on 1v4 very hard, see my other thread named "Get EVERY SINGLE outmatched achievement w/o skill.". But this post here will show you how to best do 1v1, 1v2, and 1v3 (any difficulty) ai.
I discovered the easiest way in the world to win 1v3 insane / very hard comps (post 1.1 patch) to get achievements. UPDATE: Still works as of April 22, 2011. I think it took only 14 minutes and little skill. I made this video to help you get your outmatched achievements if you have been struggling with them.
Detailed instructions:
JUST GET TO 15,000 MINERALS BEFORE COMPS AND YOU WIN. Pick map: Burning Tide, custom settings Pick Protoss vs. 3 Zergs (Zergs seem to waste a lot of mins) Start building probes Build a pylon Never forget to chronoboost. The whole reason I picked Protoss is for chronoboost so don't forget to constantly chorono. Expand twice Dont get supply blocked, you will only need 6 pylons TOTAL Build 21 probes at each base The computer will never attack you.
Last but not least, run a probe around the map to pick up +100 mineral boosts. UPDATE: these mineral boosts should respawn after each raise and lowering of the lava tide! Keep picking them up after each tide, this could make the difference between winning and losing!
VIDEO IS VS. 3 INSANE ai ZERG.
THis works for 1v1, 1v2, and 1v3 medium, hard, very hard, and insane. Enjoy all the free easy acheivement points. That's all the outmatched achievements with 0 skill required! For tips on 1v4 very hard, see my other thread named "Get EVERY SINGLE outmatched achievement w/o skill."
Wait, im trying to do it right now but... I'm in lobby and I cant set the AI's to insane, theyre shaded out and set as Very Easy can someone help me? :T

Change game type to custom, then you will be able to change to insane computers. You will then add 3 insane comps. You may also have to drag yourself to the slots below and let the 3 comps take up 'team1'

Same. Looks like Blizzard caught wind and fixed it.
Edit: Ha-dur, didn't refresh so I missed the custom game setting fix. Nvm.
Double edit: I can confirm this also works for the insane 3v3 mix achievements. Just do protoss (you)/zerg/terran vs protoss/zerg/terran and double expand to two gold sides instead. You do have to pull up for lava surges but there were only two before I won, and leaving 21 probes at the main helped. Funnily enough the final counts were the two protoss top, two zerg middle, two terran bottom by a bit. They all made units and upgrades and stuff but didn't do anything with them
I just did the 1v4 Insane as zerg and won - however, I think there's a bug in the system as it incorrectly considered both me and the 4th AI (spawning on my side) to be part of the north team. Ultimately, I would have won in any case but I'm fairly certain the game ended when both me and the AI combined had 15k minerals.

I got all the achievements
Cantankerous, that is sick I just realized that to I will give you cred in my next video. Holy shit we're on to something.

Do exactly this.
Make sure you go first to multiplayer Create game pick burning tides change game setting to 'custom' move yourself down to say 'team 2' add 4 computers all to 'team 1' make sure they are all on same exact team adjust their skill difficulty (insane) make sure they are all on same exact difficulty start game.
they always seem to be like 300 ahead of me, i wouldn't say this requires NO skill because I don't play toss and it's pretty tight timing for expanding, finding the minerals, and making sure each expo has 21 probes..
do you guys change the handicap on the computers? does it count? X_x i tried 1v3 insane with 100% handicap for all of em..

Hmm, try making them very hard instead since there is no actual achievement for 1v3 insane (only for 1v2 insane. Also, try to be as lean and mean as you can 21 probes each base, chrono boost, send one probe out to get the mineral bonuses. Hope you do it!

When using this for the 3v3 insane spread achs (z/t/p v z/t/p, one game, two achs), I didn't notice the insane AIs getting their usual bonus (7 per trip instead of 5) on the counter, but the only real advantage you get trying 1v2 is that both AIs will train units and then just sit there and do nothing with them, allowing you to focus on pure probes and expand once or twice to win. Oddly enough the best option would be PvTT, as both the terrans were last by a mile on income, even with mules around.

Ah, you are using this for your 3v3 achievements? Good plan.. I'll investigate.

I just realized the achievements are for 250 wins, which would take 60 hours to do. I'm not doing this shit for 60 hours just to get cheesemints. Goddamn Blizzard, who is going to win 250 games against AI?
I can confirm 1v4 works as well. For the 4th AI who shares either the north or south with you (depending on where you are), the game counts its minerals as your team's so it's actually easier to beat than 1v3.

let's make all achievements easy and quick to get would that be fair?
Not sure I should admit it publicly but I can attest that it works even after patch 1.1.1, and I found it's easier as terran. Didn't try toss but watched the video.
10 supply, 12 rax, 15 orbital, and then you can build CC's in base around 16 and 20 or so (not sure on those numbers).
When CC's finish, load em up with 5 SCVs and fly them to nearby expos (don't have to worry about lava and maynerding), and make them orbitals asap as well.
I only used one mule in my main, and saved the rest for expos so my main wouldn't mine out.
I beat 2 Insane AI by about 7-8k minerals, and I beat 3 Insane AI by 2k minerals.

I tried this and I didn't get the achievement for it. Did I do something wrong?

Or, uh, let's make them fun to get. Fighting an AI this number of times is quite tedious.

you clearly have never seen any of the WoW achievements (mainly grinding rep ones) achievements are optional, if you don't like doing them, you don't have to

More like, make it so you don't have to win 800 FFAs to get all the achievements. Who in the fuck is going to play 3200 FFAs, assuming you win 1/4?
lol i did it with terran+mules way better... but still you need to expand twice, since expanding once with constant mules makes you lose by like 100 minerals

How? I only get the teams as 4v2 =\ can't do 3v3
I was able to use it for all of the Outmatched Achievements but I am also curious how you were able to do it for the 3v3 Achievements. When choosing custom the groups are split 4/2/1 and unfortunately if you do not do custom and instead do the regular 3v3 it sets the AI at much easier difficulties.
Choosing custom splits the groups into 4/2/1, yes, but you don't have to keep them that way. You can change the size of the groups using the interface.

ive tryed :S can u be more specific?
I'm not entirely certain how to do this myself...
Managed to do it. change game to custom and then its just about moving the comp into team 2 (i just got lucky and it randomly worked but it hadnt been working earlier.
Just poke at it till it works that's what I did. I can post detailed instructions when I have access to the client but the basic method was right click, left click, and click and drag everything and see what happens.
If you drag a player/AI and carefully center the cursor over the team name, not one of the players, and drop it will add them to the team and not switch them with another player/AI. If you've got it in the right place the box around the team will visibly light up.

How exactly do you pull off a cannon rush vs. 4 insane AI? I've been trying to do this and they magically detect any proxy within ~20 range of their vision, so the cannons have to start well outside their base or 30 probes will come swarm them. Even against 2 Insane AI, they push out around the third cannon and start spamming zealots, which could be held off except that a bunch of them skirt by and go rape my probes.
Of course this Burning Tide method works very easily, but I'm just interested in successfully cannon rushing Insane AI at this point.

When that was originally posted, it was possible to cannon rush insane AI. They've since improved the AI and it's much harder now.
I just tried it last night with 1.1.3 and it is indeed possible, I got all of the outmatched achievements, for 1 v 3 very hard I suggest using Terran and getting 3 Orbital Commands, I only built one supply depot and maxed out SCVs at 42, keep an even balance at all three bases. Hotkey all orbital commands and use mules the second they are available. I did not even have to go pick up Mineral Caches.
On January 08 2011 02:59 drjoe wrote: How come when I load burning tide, it wont let me change the difficulty setting from the AI? it stuck at very easy? Did something change?
It seems like they changed it, unfortunately. Don't think you can play against AI above 'very easy' difficulty anymore on this map.
EDIT: Never mind, you can still get the achievement on 'custom' settings.
Just play as terran and get ~8 OC then land one by the gold minerals and launch MULEs to easily win .
I have noticed that the AI never takes an expansion if you you have placed e.g. a pylon there. You can use this to force your opppent's expansions or completely deny any. I don't know if this always works with the natural, but in my experience it is a nice clean method to make games vs. AI much easier....
@QuoC change it to a melee or something maybe and u can change the difficulty
this isnt new people were doing this last october maybe. if anyone remembers or am i crazy cause my son and i did this back then cause we found it HERE on the forums

If you look at my first post on this thread, I originally posted this on September 28th, 2010. I'm pretty sure that's before October and I'm pretty sure it was this very thread that you read when you visited TL.net back then :X. The reason this thread appears 'new' on TL.net forums is because it's constantly bumped by people who actually appreciate the help and want to be nice and give me feedback and say thanks.
dude i was protecting your honor as the one who discovered this...thought someone was trying to steal your thunder dawg. trying to give credit where credit is do and apparently you are the guy who came up with this months ago.
does this still work? i didnt get the achievements
edit all the comps need to be on team 1 and put yourself on team two easier with terran and double expand mules than protoss. Just use two scv to run around and collect minerals, one for each half of the map
i just tried it (so under patch 1.3) and it worked great for the 1vs4 insane (already had the 1vs3 before)
go alone in one team and put 4 zergs in the other team. When the game will start, you'll be 2 vs 3 but just becarefull while expending your mineral allied isn't really your allied so he'll kill your probes.
Just get a good amount of workers at your main, then expend at the tird base on your side, i got around 40 probes total with one on the map chassing the +100 minerals.
just keep chronoboosting and you'll get it quickly
I'd rather raise this post from the dead then make a new one.
anyone have a new way to do this? The megaton way is *nearly* impossible!
Edit: I just got it after many many tries. The enemies must spawn on the bottom and your pylon/forge placement must be perfect. Everything else has to line up perfect too: the spawn location, the fact that they don't rush immortals, the fact that the later guys don't get collosus tech up quickly (this happened to me near the end, just rushed VRs (already had gateways and cyber).
