So I have been playing a bit of the beta this past month or so and have been curious about how global play will be in HOTS. I looked around on forums here and on bnet and came to this http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/7826684/Global_Play_Coming_to_StarCraft_II-12_21_2012 This basically states that we will have access to all servers by choice. (I.E. you can switch from NA to KR by choice but they aren't united as one)
But I am curious how come there won't be a global server like there currently is in HOTS with all regions on one server? Does the beta lag for KR or EU players? I don't notice anything in terms of lag in the beta but I am in America on the East coast. However, in WOL if I switch to the KR server I'm instantly at like 200-250 ping making it very difficult to play.
I also find that a globalized server (if it doesn't lag for KR/EU players) like in the beta is beneficial to everyone as it raises the level of play across the board, for both casuals and pros. However, I can definitely see blizzard purposely separating all the servers in fear of KR players dominating and giving an inferiority complex to the casual player.
Poll: Globalized server as one or choice to choose which region to play in?Keep regional play on separate servers with a choice of which to play on. (50) 65% Globalized server with all regions on one server. (27) 35% 77 total votes Your vote: Globalized server as one or choice to choose which region to play in? (Vote): Globalized server with all regions on one server. (Vote): Keep regional play on separate servers with a choice of which to play on.

Isn't your server not enought for you to play? You got unranked play, so you can play without caring about wins and league icon.
I think it's better to have separate regions for each country, because only then there will be less lags for everyone, especially for players from other countries.

Mainly out of curiosity as I've had the opportunity to play EU and KR players in the beta with no complaints from them of lagging.

Or it's just self satisfaction?

I say give the option to pick which server you play, like how it used to be in oldschool battle.net. This way everyone can still have access to their own server to play on with the least amount of lag, but they can also play in other regions for tournaments or to play with friends that don't live in the same region as them.

True, current Global Play is enought for that. Not need for one server for everyone. And you already saw something like that in HOTS Beta, where many players had lags, when servers were located in US region

No but its just fun to see different strategies used vs you especially early on in a game's age. Usually you can tell KR builds from EU player builds from some NA player builds.

Separate servers just for the sake of reducing lag. I mean, if you can choose, it doesn't make a difference if you want to play against a certain group of people (koreans, for example), but the people that want to have the best gaming experience possible should have the option to play w/o lag in a server close to them.
I mean, unless you're in the very top of the ladder (GM), all the servers are equally hard anyway, so there's no point in playing in a different server than your own unless you're a pro/semi-pro player.

If they can find a way to make it not laggy for everyone, a global server would be the best. But, if it lags, I guess we will have to settle for split regions. I would love for a global server though, the quality of players feels much better, and I feel that it has greatly helped me improved.

Definitely separate servers. You can't play with that big of a lag constantly NA guys are going to answer "globalized!!", but please think about it please :D

I just want a unified version to switch between servers instead of having to install same files over and over u.u
|
Due to the lags through a worldwide system its better to have the regional with the choice of servers I think

Separate for sure. Despite what people want to think, cross continent internet still generally sucks.

Erm, this is already possible in the latest WoL Patch I'm pretty sure.

the problem with one global server is that if the server is located in the US and both players are from the EU, instead of having minimum ping they get US ping. for koreans the ping to the US isn't massive but its noticable, same for EU but if someone from KR/EU is playing someone from the US, the player in the US has a ping advantage.
The reason they keep them seperated is very simple, if ur in korea and want to play with low ping you connect to korea server. You don't want to be forced to play with higher pings and possibly be at a disadvantage to someone who is significantly closer to the server than you.
I play on KR from EU and get around 250-350 ping, its really noticeable when u first start playing. If i was forced to play with pings that high all the time, because they decided to locate the global server in korea, I'd never play again. When I choose to play on korea server, i go in to it knowing i will have to deal with higher pings.
Plus in the old battle net you still had regions seperated out, more than we have now. US had east and west servers for instance. Global play means you can connect to any server, not just play randomly with anyone around the world on any server, that would be stupid and cause many more problems.
There is no game ever made that used one unified server for global play, you have always and likely will always have to pick a server or region to play on. There are nearly always play regions (for RTS games) or local servers for your region available (for FPS games) so that you can play with the lowest pings possible.
Years ago, when we played via LAN/WAN we would often select a third party (who lived in the middle) to host the game if players were on opposite sides of the world so that both players would have roughly equal pings. People always talk about LAN as if its some mythical thing that reduces ping to 0, while that is true when you are on an actual LAN with people, using LAN capabilities over WAN always gave one person an advantage, hence why people often used a proxy player to host.

Yes, but remember that in sc1, the server was used only for the chat and game setup, once ingame the communication was peer to peer, so it really didnt matter where you connected. Of course every server would have more people from that region so in the end you could be playing with high latency if you connect to a foreign server
|
I really like the global play with 1 single server. if its possible to implement that with low latency i'd prefer this over seperate regions. its cool to play some GSL koreans from time to time on the ladder
|
you cant make it 1 server ... ebcause then it have to stand at ONE point, so in america, -> korea europe have lag, in europe -> korea usa have lag, etc etc
its not possible so make no sense to vote if you think different gio play on korea server and say you like the lag ^^

Yeah separate is better just because lag can be pretty bad in some locations. Would be cool to just have one global ladder but not practical I feel. Smooth gameplay must come first.

So then is lag caused by the server being taxed from too many people being on one server? Because currently all EU KR and NA players are all playing the beta with no lag and most top tier players are even streaming while playing.
